April 17, 2024, Peel Regional Police and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) announced details and arrests made concerning the theft of gold and cash from Toronto's Pearson International Airport. Detective Sergeant Mike Mavity, major case manager for "Project 24K" summarized the investigation.

    The fact that a gold shipment goes to a normal cargo hanger is basically poor procedure. Most gold and large amounts of money should right away go to a facility operated by bricks or other security company.

      @@spicybeak69 I wouldn't call a place that you can get in with a invoice and wearing a safety vest as secure. Secure is the place where the US dispose of their old money. Where everyone is wear ID tags, and had background checks to get a job or be anywhere near the location. Where even getting into the shipping or cargo lot you need someone like a security guard to buzz you in. Where the security guard to double check pick up and drop off appointments with their own to match up. Someone that even with an invoice you need to hack into their database to get a legitmate copy.

      Two of the suspects are or were air Canada employees. I have no love for air Canada, but I don't think it makes sense to assume much of anything involving that shipment was done according to procedure

    I worked for AC at YYC and one day I had to unload 6 gold bars from the hold and Securitas was not only on the gate before the plane arrived but one of the guys came over the belt and I had to wait until he gave me the ok. He stood at bottem and watched me as he put each bar into a dedicated cart.

    It’s difficult to understand how a shipment that was delivered under a specific Airwaybill the day prior would be delivered a second time using the same AWB. Normally these shipments are guarded and picked up airside. Surely there’s much more to this story.

    You know it was within the employees of that airport cargo warehouse. They knew what was delivered called someone, sent or gave a paper to someone and said pull up at this location and the other person drove the forklift to that spot got the gold and put it in the truck they hugged it in the video. They need to take all employees phones and investigate. That’s my opinion.

      Dude there’s 9 guys directly involved in stealing and distributing (there’s prolly more) also selling that much gold would not get you $20Ms (you have to sell at a discount and find the right buyers).
      There’s also legacy (on top of the cut each of the main guys who did the theft), legacy cost is for hush money.
