Iqbals poet life can be split in phases. There was a good lecture that I heard a few years back. Basically his life/evolution is split in 3 parts 1) His pan-‘Hindu’ years 2) his philosophical years when he spent it abroad in uk and Germany 3) his Islamic years when he eventually returned back to India. I think all three phases of his poetry are valid and should be celebrated by whomever wants to.

I think Vande Mataram is the national song! I dont think Saare Jahan se achha, while fond and beloved by many of us, has any constitutional status. Iqbals poet life can be split in phases. There was a good lecture that I heard a few years back. Basically his life/evolution is split in 3 parts
1) His pan-‘Hindu’ years
2) his philosophical years when he spent it abroad in uk and Germany
3) his Islamic years when he eventually returned back to India.
I think all three phases of his poetry are valid and should be celebrated by whomever wants to.

I think Vande Mataram is the national song! I dont think Saare Jahan se achha, while fond and beloved by many of us, has any constitutional status. Despite that pan-Islamic turn that Iqbal took later, should we not celebrate the sentiment of the creation of this song, since it is a product of a society, and not just an individual? Or, should we rather attach to it the failings of its creator, who is after all human and vulnerable to ego, hubris and propaganda? I think this is an excellent example of why we should celebrate the art and not necessarily artist. Also, thank you for telling us about Sahir Ludhianvi's response to Iqbal.
