It's going to happen, much like the electric car revolution is happening and WILL keep happening -- but it's going to happen slower than people are expecting. Can you buy into the hype right now? Yes. But it won't be shaping the industry for another decade or so. Let that temper your enthusiasm. It's a long term play.

Well said. “It’s going to happen slower than people are expecting” that same thing can be said of machining. Back when CNC was coming out it was going to be the future and do away with manual machines. CNC are costly and only worth the investment if you know you have the work to keep it going. Manual still has a place in manufacturing. The place is smaller than what it was 15 years ago but they are still around.

Yeah.. it's the future.. but I don't think it will replace current manufacturing in 2 to 3 years. Cause as an investor in stocks. It doesn't make sense to place money in a stock in hope for revenue in 3 years.

Hi Kevin, as a laser physicist I can tell you that there are some fundamental problems with 3D printing and nano technology. Currently computer chips are made with a technology called XUV which uses ultraviolet light to create structures in the range of 6 to 12 nanometers. If you use 3D printing you are limited by the size of your printing nozzle. Wearable sensors with a low complexity can be printed with that because they are not really size limited. If you want to build something like a processor or an apple watch, then the amount of transistors per cm^2 are important (or in this case per cm^3) if the 3D printing is limited to structures with the size of 1 micron then this is still a hundred times larger than current technology and therefore can not compete in the complex chip manufacturing. It is quite likely that this technology remains limited by the size of the smallest structure they can build.
Isn’t this why their trying to develop quantum mechanics or technology? To overcome this issue? Thus making this 3 d printed circuitry obsolete?

@@rdrdrd7777 if you are referring to quantum computing, then no. Quantum computers are made for other purposes and their technology doesn't make sense to be used in a desktop pc. Also it's technically not feasible to minimize it below a certain size because you need either superconducting currents that have to be cooled down to below 93 K (-180°C).

I remember seeing videos/demos of the dragonfly printer last year. Very cool tech. I totally agree with Kevin's friend though: 3D printing, as it stands, is really for prototyping or creating fixtures/jigs for other machines to do the actual manufacturing. I follow a lot of new tech, I have a hobbyist level 3D printer, I've seen what the industrial printers can do (it's pretty incredible), and I think as far as additive manufacturing goes: laser sintering has a much better shot at being even more widely adopted right now and over the next 3-5 years. I like this tech and I wish Nano Dimensions the best, BUT I have to say that for this particular use to get decently adopted it will take another 5 years and it will be a slog for any companies involved in trying to bring that revolution about. I'd give it 8 for it to become widely adopted and 10 for it to become mainstream, maybe 13. That sounds like a long time but it needs to be understood that that is actually incredibly fast, particularly in manufacturing (especially considering the level of infrastructure already in place and how difficult it would be to roll that back after adopting a new technology in parallel).
Just as a simple comparison: 3D printers have been around since the 80s. Yes it's a nearly 40 year old technology now and it took about 30 years for it to get to the point where machines that could do a decent job were finally hitting the 10,000$ price point. 5 years later we could get the equivalent of those machines in our garage for about 1-2,000$. Now we can get machines on par with the decade old 10k$ machines for 600-1,000$ and a nice hobbyist machine with all sorts of bells and whistles for 600 or less. Technology does snowball and grow rapidly, but it needs focus to do so. Something I'm glad Kevin highlighted in his video is that this tech still lacks focus. There may even be entrepreneurs right now with dedicated plans trying to start a company creating wearables using this tech but that's a 2 year process to begin with and they have to afford the machines on top of that. Nano has to survive and if they don't then their machines are going to go somewhere and probably get reverse engineered and another company will pick up where they left off and it will all grow slowly. 3D printing is an amazing technology and I'm really excited for the future of it (because I will be involved one way or another for sure) but a common misconception is that these machines are replicators from star trek: they are definitely not. They are sensitive, fiddly, pains in the butt that specialize in what they do. And they do it slowly. Hours and hours, sometimes days at a time. The really high end ones are much faster and nicer but they can still take a full day or two running nonstop to knock out one complex part that still needs post processing.
As mentioned in the first few sentences: 3D printing is best suited for prototyping and small quantities, and better yet (what I use mine for) creating a master for casting/mold making processes so that the finished product can be mass produced much more efficiently. I've seen people use 3D prints to make intricate jaws for CNC machines that would have been impossible or incredibly difficult to machine out of aluminum. Jaws that then went on to assist in making a couple hundred parts in a day or two. I 3D printed a set of 8 plastic sliders that are used to mount a couch in an RV. It took 15 hours (longer actually because my prints failed several times due to the thermistor going bad intermittently and the prints failing in the middle of the night multiple times) and I sold them for 20$ a piece. Now I'm going to print 4 more on a block, make a silicone mold, and cast them in Polyurethane which will be much much faster, sturdier, cost me about the same in material, and I can still sell them for 20$ a piece (each couch needs 4). 3D printing is a support technology and I think it's going to stay that way, it will have more and more uses and yield wonderful results as time goes on but I still don't think it's going to be a mass production technology unless something REALLY radical happens, printing is going to make leaps and bounds in the medical field (already has started to) and sintering is going to be aerospace, automotive (though only prototyping in automotive most likely) boat/ship work, laboratory/specialization work, and I think has much more promise in a manufacturing capacity. I'm going to hold off on Nano, I'll keep an eye on it and if it's still around in 2 years I might buy in depending on where it's at unless something big happens before then. Thanks for the great video Kevin, it's my first one of yours that I've seen (thank the RUclips algorithm) cool stuff, I'll watch more. I hope they find a way to use this technology to create some nice high end wearables and create some very practical/realistic haptic suits for VR - I could see an application of this tech for that. As well as haptic feedback and inexpensive body tracking for teleoperated robots being controlled from the safety of FOBs and trucks by troops overseas or responders in emergency situations. 21st century is an exciting time, wish I could see the 22nd too.

And it’s “Nano Dimension”, not “...Dimensions”. Their Dragonfly 2020 printer also uses conductive silver ink for the circuits it prints. A couple of months ago I also read that the Dragonfly is used for making the 5G antenna for another company I hold shares in.
A customer of NNDM recently ordered a PCB from both NNDM and a traditional chip maker. The traditional took 4 months. NNDM delivered the product in 10 days! That is efficiency, and one reason this company is so exciting. I doubt Cathy Wood falls for a company with fancy marketing!!

3d printing can be simply downloaded and printed, this eliminates international shipping costs as well as getting products to areas where shipping is a problem.

Imagine using this same technology, in the mass production in the real estate field. If they can bring cost down. I don’t see why more homes can’t be made with 3D printers.
