But honestly, if I lived in California, I would have absolutely voted for him because I can honestly say he is probably one of the most reasonable people I've ever seen run for any office. I grew up in the sticks in Mississippi. Got a full academic scholarship to college in Texas so I left and ended up with more economic opportunities over the last 35 years in Texas than I ever would have had if I’d stayed in Mississippi. I’m not anywhere near Vance’s level but I totally relate to the way he was raised (I had a Mamaw, too!) and I fully support him. If there is one thing I know for sure it’s that we need more people representing us that are from the middle of the country and not the out-of-touch coasts. He may have gone to Yale Law but I guarantee you he has midwestern common sense. #Trump2024

I also used the Vietnam era GI bill and bought my first home 1982 (40K) with zero down. Like JD I also grew up in a very poor neighborhood, in Cambridge Mass, it wasn't always a liberal bastion of socialism. It used to have a fair amount of slums.

GI Bill pays the same, whether you go to Yale (crazy expensive) or the local community college.
(I went to Berkeley on the GI Bill, 1978-85. Being a state university it was inexpensive, but inflation ate it up. It was fat city at the beginning, but by the time I graduated it didn't go very far. At Yale it might pay for your room and board....)

This video just popped up on my feed, but I gotta tell you I very much appreciate your objectivity and sincere approach in talking about Vance, as far as raising perfectly reasonable and uniquely insightful questions without coming off biased or pushing a particular side in a manipulative way . I have no idea where your politics are. This is just my first video, but it’s refreshing to just see some true objectivity and get credit where it’s due, and scrutinize the areas where there may be.

JD brings nothing different to the table. A VP is supposed to be chosen to strengthen a presidential candidate's weaknesses. He just signed up a mini-me.
@@ev25zvActually, according to Richard Baris and polling he has done on the issue of VP picks and how they impact election odds for Trump, JD helps Trump more than most of the other potential names that were floated around. Polls including Vance helped Trump with 2 critical areas of voters that Trump needs- apparently Vance has good relationships with the Teamsters and with Silicon Valley/ Tech startup who historically largely back Dems. Vance also made a strong and meaningful impact with voters around the midwest after the East Palestine, Ohio train derailment and subsequent EPA & Fed Govt. choice to explode and burn off the chemicals on the train, then provide little support after to those impacted. Vance had his own boots on the ground there before anyone from the Biden administration would even consider going, and assisted with distributing bottled water and immediately posting on his social media the true conditions of the waterways impacted by the Fed Govts. actions while then Fed Govt continued to claim “there’s nothing to worry about, we just can’t make time to come yet but we really wish we were there.” I don’t know if those voters will be swayed to Trump off just that but it gives the Trump campaign a real world example to use where Bidens administration massively dropped the ball and effectively wrote off those they claim Trump doesn’t care about. But I’d recommend listening to some of the streams done by Richard Baris or even asking him on social media to share his polling results regarding Vance, as he has done a lot of work surrounding how certain VP picks impact Trump as well as how Biden dropping out and other Dems getting the nomination and RFK running impact the outcome of the 2024 election and believes Vance to be one of the best choices Trump could have made based on those results.

@@stephaniegrow2001 The premises are incorrect. There was no insurrection. The Florida case was thrown out because it had no justification for being initiated in the first place (Jack Smith was unlawfully appointed). The statements about dictator were in jest. I'm not sure what "court capture" is.

Personal experience: I grew up extremely poor in Appalachia. I had no running water in my house aside from a hand pump well at our sink. We used an outhouse. We watched TV by hooking a truck up to a television with bunny ears and catching the free broadcast (like home improvement). My mom was able to go from a sales person at a makeup store to a decent job. By the time i was in elementary school, we had moved into a house and lived in it constantly under construction until I went to college on a full ride. Then grad school. A lot of what he says in his book is very accurate. People can get out of poverty, but it is hard and takes someone really telling you that you can.

The lawer I dated who graduated from Stanford often lamented the fact that she didn’t get into Yale. They are the #2 and #1 law schools in the country. Harvard is #3. To get into Stanford you need to at least be a top 1% scorer on the LSAT. At least that’s the way it was.

my family is from middletown, ohio and his description of middletown is on point, in todays terms. whenever he was growing up there, it was actual a great city that had a lot of money. middletown went down the drug-poverty spiral once the hospitals closed down.
my dad was a janitor for middletown schools for 25+ years.

I don't mind the pick of Vance, but I am a bit disappointed, because Trump stated that he wanted someone who will continue to follow Trump policies and I really thought Vivek would fit the VP perfectly and is extremely quick minded and extremely intelligent and would be the perfect person to follow him in the 2028 election!

Hillbilly elegy is pronounced "elejee" so not with a hard G. From google elegy means "a poem of serious reflection, typically a lament for the dead." And his book is very negative about the culture he comes from. But it is a complex book. I have issues I agree and disagree with him from a cultural perspective at least judging from his book. I also grew up in the rural south (alabama). I have more empathy for the poor south than he does but agree with him on many of the cultural issues causing its economic problems. I feel the problem is that he puts these in strictly moral terms rather than forward looking economic terms (don't blame people, show them the way to a better life). I read it back when it was on bill gates reading list. Then Peter Thiel is pronounced with a hard T.

Let's see if Vance still remembers the working class 7-10 years later from his Ted Talk. Trump doesn't remember because his father was a real estate developer so never struggled financially. Romney's father was the CEO of American motors, Biden comes from a mixed bag but his father worked his way up from humble beginnings. Obama didn't inherit much from his family monetarily, but definitely academically. RFK's father and immediate family was solidly middle class and created a fortune then providing trust funds to all his nine kids... General success in America is great. However being successful and pushing through the odds (health, poverty, discrimination) is so much more honorable and relatable then having your start way ahead with Daddy or Mommy's money. My 2 cents.
