When you dropped the solenoid, did gas still flow out of the bowl? Bowl was empty & Mine didn't flow? I cleaned my solenoid, & gas still didn't flow into carb. Is there a stuck needle valve up in there? Shouldn't gas flow out with solenoid off?
. The gas coming out after the solenoid was removed was minimal. I lucked out with mine, but it sounding like you may have a stuck needle. If you're up for doing it yourself, grab a can of carb & choke cleaner & blast a spray into the fuel inlet for the carb. I have a 22 horsepower Kohler Courage engine will turn over but won't start. Spark plugs dry not getting gas check solenoid, solenoid works. Check to see if choke would open when throttle was put into choke. Cable was not engaging choke to open all the way. Adjusted cable linkage with one small adjustment screw by putting throttle lever to slow, loosen cable housing clamp (1 screw) located under carb, then move black throttle cable housing back about a quarter of an inch, or however much you need, retighten cable housing down with the screw. Now choke opens all the way when pushed into choke. It starts first turn every single time now.

Sears repairman came to diagnose my Kohler-engine Craftsman Garden Tractor today, said the problem is the fuel solenoid. Said he can't replace just the solenoid, has to replace the whole carb for $600. I ordered the carb from him, but after seeing this vid I'm going to check the solenoid myself in the morning and see what's what. If it needs replacing, Amazon has the part for $29, delivered in two days. Great vid, well-explained.
Since when does a carb for a mower, or anything else the average person has around their house cost 600 bucks ? Saying you can't replace a solenoid and charging 600 bucks for a new carb , even with installation ( two screws a couple small cables reattached and a fuel line, total of 15 to 20 minutes ) are both crimes and he should have been reported to the police. Also, Sears should have been notified and the better business bureau as well. I got a replacement carb on line, brand new OEM for 30 bucks with shipping. That repairman was a thief and 400 dollars of that was going straight into his pocket….thats if it even cost 200 for travel, the part and time.
Thank you. This is a good place for me to start. I'll be checking out my Kohler 20 HP solenoid fuel shut off. I think this might be the problem I'm having because, although it's difficult to start, I can usually get it started, and it runs fine. However, when I shut it down, I am getting a bit of a latent backfire.
Saw your post down below. My engine will start, although somewhat difficult, so I believe my solenoid shut off valve is sticking, as opposed to being completely frozen.
Oh man. Thank you so much smallengineshop for posting this video on the solenoid. I took mine off and I forgot if it had a spring in it. This video shows that it, indeed, has a spring. I must have lost mine when taking it off. I'm trying to run a sweeper magnet to try to find it but it looks like I'll be buying a new one at $110 at Sears, which sucks.
Save your money. Get rid of that solenoid POS. Put a shut valve in where you control your gas supply. No more worries. Shut off valve on Amazon. CHEAP!! Save the $110.00.

Super presentation! In my case, I had a clogged hose (due to deterioration on the inside - bad gas - ethanol). It faked me out at first as gas pushed back after a air pressure test from the filter. However the telling sign was that gas wouldn't flow out with simple gravity test. I replaced all the lines and then had to bleed out a good part of the tank to rid the water accumulation.

I have good spark and can keep it running if I continue to spary engine starter fluid in the carburator so I know it's a fuel problem. I can't wait to check this out because it sounds like my issue.
these solenoids are kind expensive, One thing I have done in the past is either remove the solenoid and put a plug in the bowl, or remove the plunger , just be sure to put a fuel cut off valve in the fuel line and turn fuel off when not in use
Really, explain this problem with briggs solenoid on float bowl mine just went up in white smoke burnt black plastic on solenoid glad I had fire extinguisher on fast hand, got it before trouble started, know replace dam solenoid
Thank you! Just what I suspected but this confirmed it and showed how to check it. There are two other wires connecting to a plug that the solenoid plugs into. Can you tell me where they run to? The ignition switch? Should there be voltage to the wire when you turn the key to run? Based on your explanation I would think so. Thank you.
Thank you!,I"ve been taking the air cleaner off and shooting gas in with a turkey baster for 10 years to cold start this thing, now I know why.Runs great once started Guess I"ve been lucky!I'll clean it and if that works, great!,if not, shooting gas in there only costs me about 2 minutes.
I honestly don't remember this solenoid, but if I remember correctly it should be replaced. I don't believe there is a connector for the wire on the solenoid.
I am having this same problem. starts with choke on then goes full throttle and dies, but will sometimes run for about thirty mins. kind of random. any suggestions? cleaned carb, fuel lines, spark plugs. could electrical in solenoid be surging?
Hey Big Guy ! Whats going on with a Craftsman GT3000 23Hp Kohler V twin , Whats going on when trying to Start and Gas will Spray out of the Carb and flood the carb front troff? Thanx!
if you have an audible click then the plunger is working properly right? wondered if there could still be an issue or does that click mean 💯 it’s moving?
My Troy Bilt XP 7000 has one of these solenoids but it works in the opposite direction. When I connect 12V to it the plunger extends. Wonder if this has any relation to why the gen only runs if the choke is at full close.
so if these are bad would your mower have a long crank time when you go to first start it after its been sitting . I occasionaly get the backfire symptom but also notices it takes like to minutes of cranking to start it
When I turn my key on . I get no click of any kind. Wont run & I know fuel is making it TO the carb. Yet when I spray carb cleaner in wheile turning key it fires until the carb cleaner burns off.
I might have fixed my problem by just removing the spring lol… My problem with my mower is when it would get hot after about 15 minutes of heavy mowing I would loose power and RPMS… it would still be running “smooth” but definitely down on power and when I would turn off the deck I can’t turn the deck back on. Been chasing the problem all summer and it’s not anything obvious to me (I’m not down a cylinder). Well I just removed that spring and mowed for a solid 30 minutes through heavy grass and my mower didn’t bog down at all
Actually now that I think about it more I don’t think the solenoid was ever my problem… the fuel bowl was full when I removed it. But ya my mower losses rpm’s (likes being governed) about about 15 minutes of mowing when it gets hot. It’s not the fuel venting as I leave my gas cap loose, got new plugs and new air filter in it this spring, the fuel is also fresh, I have spark on both cylinders…. At this point I’m kinda suspecting coils and maybe they just are getting weak spark when they get hot? If it is coils that would suck because coil replacement for my Koehler 26hp is a $200 conversion kit because they discontinued the original coils. But ya outside of spending $200 on coils for a mower I’m kinda stumped
I think this could be the issue with my toro 4225 zero turn lawn mower......... It is practically unused but I had it sitting under a tarp for a year or so..... It won't get gas for whatever reason, it just won't start ..... Thanks 👍
Nice Video, i'm gonna check this out on my mower. I just got a Cub LT2180 in really good condition 111 Hrs it has not run in a few years, I cleaned the carb, replaced fuel filter, and all the necessary steps to get it running and it runs but no fuel. I can see in the fuel filter no gas is pumping , I also cleaned the fuel pump so my guess is the pump or the solenoid ?
I have to deal with this once a year on my clients Kohler. Some say just cut the pintel off, have you tried that ? I dont want to grind it off only to find out I now need to replace the solenoid.
I followed your procedure to test my solenoid in my Honda GVS530. I found that when I turned the ignition, the piston didn't contract so I pushed it in manually. When I shut off ignition off the piston popped back out. Does this indicate that my solenoid is bad or could it be that one of the saftey sensors is faulty and keeping it from contracting? Thanks
do all fuel solenoids click with this test, or do they come on after the engine is cranking...i have a couple good riding mowers that work fine but the solenoids do not click so i`m very curious when i will know if the solenoid isnt working since i cant hear it click when i turn the key on
Thanks for this video! My engine cranks right up but then dies almost immediately. I can feed it gas through the carb and it will continue to run as long as I feed it.... I will check the solenoid and see what happens. Wish me luck!
I'm not receiving any voltage to the solenoid. I put my multi-meter on the connection, turned the key and the needle didn't move. I'm getting at least 10 volts to my lights as a control. I'm also getting a shock from the chassis more often than I believe that I should. The engine cranks, but does not start. There is gas in the carb in the lower portion where the float is. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
You can take the guts out of the solenoid and put it back and it'll run fine but I would suggest putting a fuel shut off in the line before your filter and that's exactly what I did with mine.

Just bypass it, remove that valve put the selenoid back with out it and it will work fine, mine has 3 years working perfectly fine with out it
Thank you. Excellent explanation.
these solenoids are kind expensive, One thing I have done in the past is either remove the solenoid and put a plug in the bowl, or remove the plunger , just be sure to put a fuel cut off valve in the fuel line and turn fuel off when not in use
Thanks I was thinking the same thing so I can put a plug in the place of the fuel solenoid on correct??
Really, explain this problem with briggs solenoid on float bowl mine just went up in white smoke burnt black plastic on solenoid glad I had fire extinguisher on fast hand, got it before trouble started, know replace dam solenoid
Thanks Much, clean, smart, great tone of voice; you are a gifted teacher.
i have a 2009 20 horse kohlar v-twin was running really great till the other day i would stall so i get running but playing with the choke
Thank you! Just what I suspected but this confirmed it and showed how to check it. There are two other wires connecting to a plug that the solenoid plugs into. Can you tell me where they run to? The ignition switch? Should there be voltage to the wire when you turn the key to run? Based on your explanation I would think so. Thank you.
GREAT VIDEO! THANKS! I LEARNED SOMETHING TODAY!!
Thanks so much. This helped me with my riding mower. Well done.
Great informative straight forward video. Thanks a million!!
TKANK YOU FOR YPUR HELP
Good video, just what the doctor ordered ..thanks
Thank you!,I"ve been taking the air cleaner off and shooting gas in with a turkey baster for 10 years to cold start this thing, now I know why.Runs great once started Guess I"ve been lucky!I'll clean it and if that works, great!,if not, shooting gas in there only costs me about 2 minutes.
you just saved me so much trouble thankyou
Excellent explanation....
Thanks for this video. The wire came off the bottom of the solenoid. Can it be reattached or do we need a new one?
I honestly don't remember this solenoid, but if I remember correctly it should be replaced. I don't believe there is a connector for the wire on the solenoid.
Great video. Just what I needed to see.
Thanks
I am having this same problem. starts with choke on then goes full throttle and dies, but will sometimes run for about thirty mins. kind of random. any suggestions? cleaned carb, fuel lines, spark plugs. could electrical in solenoid be surging?
Hi,thx for demo video, where can i classify fuel sollenoid in (HSC)
,harmonised system code.Thank you
Hey Big Guy !
It likely is or is moving partially.
I occasionaly get the backfire symptom but also notices it takes like to minutes of cranking to start it
Mine seems to work but still am not getting fuel. Any ideas?
Good video. You explained it very well. I will be checking mine tomorrow. Thanks.
When I turn my key on . I get no click of any kind. Wont run & I know fuel is making it TO the carb. Yet when I spray carb cleaner in wheile turning key it fires until the carb cleaner burns off.

Did this fix your problem
I might have fixed my problem by just removing the spring lol…
My problem with my mower is when it would get hot after about 15 minutes of heavy mowing I would loose power and RPMS… it would still be running “smooth” but definitely down on power and when I would turn off the deck I can’t turn the deck back on.
Thanks 👍
Great video.
Check the fuel lines, fuel pump, gas tank, etc.
Would this solenoid have anything to do with the engine sputtering out when the PTO is engaged and the blades start turning?
I have to deal with this once a year on my clients Kohler. Some say just cut the pintel off, have you tried that ? I dont want to grind it off only to find out I now need to replace the solenoid.
I haven't tried that.
Great vid!
Checking mine tomorrow
Hammerx Thanks for watching!
Thanks
Thanks for that!
How does this work if you have no battery? I have a champion generator with a carb solenoid but there is no battery on the generator.
do all fuel solenoids click with this test, or do they come on after the engine is cranking...i have a couple good riding mowers that work fine but the solenoids do not click so i`m very curious when i will know if the solenoid isnt working since i cant hear it click when i turn the key on
do you have a pic of the spring that's inside this unit? the machine shop lost it when in for service....no shit. do you know the length/width of it?
That solenoid wire may be shorting to the frame before it reaches carb area.
Can you put a regular carburetor on and disconnect that Silaniod
You can take the guts out of the solenoid and put it back and it'll run fine but I would suggest putting a fuel shut off in the line before your filter and that's exactly what I did with mine.
