The story mode in this game is actually based on the F-Zero anime (which is also called “F-Zero GP Legend”). This game is essentially the Pokémon Yellow of the F-Zero series.
Great review as always. This game reminds me (1) how awesome the Game Boy Advance was and (2) how much I miss my Gamecube and Game Boy Player adapter :(
Damn 11 years ago already that this review came out, time does fly. It’s crazy there was a anime of F-Zero but yet Nintendo hasn’t made anything for the series in ages and no F-zero 99 isn’t one of them.
Nice review, Mark. Never played this one, but maybe I will some day. The first F-Zero game I bought was GX, although I played the first F-Zero when it came out. FYI, a lot of people get this wrong in F-Zero GX reviews, so if you are reading this here it is: You CAN unlock all the AX content (except 3 Japan arcade-only machine parts) without an AX arcade machine, and the content is REALLY good, BUT it is VERY VERY hard to do so. Worth it for me, but you probably don't have the time.
I have been a fan of the F-Zero games since the first one on SNES. This game reminds me of F-Zero (SNES). What a great game. A game series that Nintendo should bring back on the Wii U!
If Mark likes GP Legend, he'll love F-Zero Climax. Someone needs to donate a copy as it's easily better than GP Legend in every way. Track Editor, even more crazy tracks, refined gameplay and it even looks a little bit better.
I have two copies. YEAH! I have the Japanese version which had the e-reader support which had the best feature of playing extra courses. I should really make a video about those features.
Games like this really make you realise the GBA is so much more powerful than the SNES. The GBA might be over 10 years old but I still find that an amazing fact.
It actually took me 3 days to beat the Big Blue story race on the hardest setting. So if you're awesome, unlocking all the AX stuff is a breeze and will only take a couple of hours I think. But most people have to claw their way to victory at the highest difficulty levels.
I think it would work if done right. the races would be the same, just you could drive around the cities the racetracks are in when not racing. Maybe even do street races or chase people as the police. The cities would be modeled much like the racetracks (though not quite as crazy) except that they would have much more roots to take. They would be designed for really fast driving - mostly highways with a few windy back roads. Free roam wouldn't replace the tradition gameplay just supplement it.
7 years late, but uhh... No. It's not a bug. It is a flickering sprite, which isn't captured completely at the frame rate it was recorded in. PS: I respect you, Bomb Jack.
That's the problem, the wonderful Amusement Vision studios was closed after Sega merged with Sammy. The only studio inside Sega capable to do the job is Sumo Digital. And give F-Zero to Sumo Digital looks like an amazing idea ;)
F-Zero GX is easily one of the best racing games ever made. It's too bad on the GameCube it didn't do well. The game is just balls to the walls awesome.
With the upcoming Virtual Console release on the Wii U (march i think it was), and the addition of GBA games, this is one i really want them to release on it!
F-Zero GP Legend is a much better game than Maximum Velocity cuz the tracks and handling are a lot better and tolerable. Hated the handling in Maximum Velocity.
"Track memorization is a must.." That's actually my one issue with the F-Zero games. And some other racing games. I don't want to have to memorize a track to do good at it. I want to just be able to race. I understand there's supposed to be some difficulty, but why does that difficulty require failing a race multiple times in order to memorize the track?
Track memorisation is one of the fundamental points of racing, you don’t think Formula One drivers jump on a track without knowing every straight and corner. It’s the same with racing video games.
It's like real life lol, in order for real life racers to do good is to memorize the track, it's not even exclusive to this game any track in a game or real life that isn't just a plain oval you're gonna have to memorize it to do even better. First you memorize the track then you find out which line to take in order to achieve the fastest lap on that track
The only thing that ever really bothered me about the GBA, is how many games tried to use pre-rendered graphics for stuff. I dunno if this game uses it or not, but it uses something that LOOKS like it, for the vehicles. To me, it never looks as good as it would have looked if it was all hand-drawn and pixeled. For example, the vehicles in the SNES F-Zero games looked way better than the vehicles in the GBA games. And I don't just mean with F-Zero though. They did it with tons of games for some reason. And it almost always looked like crap. Pre-rendered 3D models, and realistic textures, do not work on a GBA. Very few games actually made it look decent(Tekken Advance being one of them). I know this is off topic to F-Zero, but one game I always wished they brought to the GBA, was Top Gear 3000. I loved that game on SNES, and think it would have been great on GBA.
I think the problem is that Nintendo can't find the correct developer to work on a game that will be better than F-Zero AX/GX in the Wii/DS days. Now it's possible they're secretly working on it... Retro Studios is working on a secret Wii U project... I bet it's a new StarFox game but... who knows :)
@@TKnightcrawler I feel you man. I am sure it wouldn't need to be made by SEGA specifically to be good, just people who know the ins and outs of F-Zero.
We so need a new F-zero game. One with free roam and police chases, not to mention the awesome races! I'd even consider buying a Wii U just to play it! Still probably wouldn't though, got my sights set on a PS3 ones the price drop comes with the release of the PS4
Well, in all fairness, Star Fox is still around. However, once Starfox Adventures came out, the series took a huge spiral downwards. Actually, that game marked two significant failures for two very popular things: starfox and rareware.
I can always count on CGR to make my day more awesome.
What ever became of your F-Zero GX review?
This game was based around the F-Zero anime that was on FoxBox/4Kids in the early to mid 2000's

Great game and great review! Looking forward to the F Zero GX review, probably my favorite game for the cube.
Yay on F-Zero GX review coming. One of the greatest (racing or otherwise) games of all time.
I have this one. It's a great game. Gamecube+Game boy player = best library of games ever!
F-Zero for just the Gamecube was SO damn neat
I have been a fan of the F-Zero games since the first one on SNES. This game reminds me of F-Zero (SNES). What a great game. A game series that Nintendo should bring back on the Wii U!
I played that game so much back in the day
F-Zero GX is an unbelievably good game, still one of the best games out there, look forward to your review of it.
Mark should have a Guiness World Record for all the amazing reviews he does.
If Mark likes GP Legend, he'll love F-Zero Climax. Someone needs to donate a copy as it's easily better than GP Legend in every way. Track Editor, even more crazy tracks, refined gameplay and it even looks a little bit better.
One extra note about the game is that the character designs are basically taken from the F-Zero anime.
Mark, Where are those Wii U reviews that you mentioned a while back?
i bought this games after i saw the review and i absolutly love it! it is excellent, thank you Classic game room and thank you Lord Karnage
I have two copies. YEAH! I have the Japanese version which had the e-reader support which had the best feature of playing extra courses. I should really make a video about those features.
i´m still waiting for a new f-zero to come out O.O that would be my system seller...
Games like this really make you realise the GBA is so much more powerful than the SNES. The GBA might be over 10 years old but I still find that an amazing fact.
MarK... You're my Hero!
of course we are watching it in the future, we couldn't watch it while you were recording it
Did Mohammad from Qatar die or something?
It feels odd that mark doesnt say the game is from him anymore.
So much good memories with this game!
Classic Game Room SD time, yes !
wow I had forgot about this game completely....... incoming childhood memories .....
How much space crack is normally available at the Intergalactic Space Arcade?
It actually took me 3 days to beat the Big Blue story race on the hardest setting. So if you're awesome, unlocking all the AX stuff is a breeze and will only take a couple of hours I think. But most people have to claw their way to victory at the highest difficulty levels.
snes f-zero is still my favorite game sound track of all time.
F-Zero? More like F-YEAH!

Mark, any word on when the F-Zero GX review will be out?
Not really sure if that would fit with the general theme/gameplay conventions set by the previous titles in the franchise.
what do u think of f-zero x for the n64?
The map in the bottom left keeps disappearing - is that a bug with the Game Boy Player?
7 years late, but uhh... No. It's not a bug. It is a flickering sprite, which isn't captured completely at the frame rate it was recorded in.
PS: I respect you, Bomb Jack.
Whao! A Choco Island track. 3:23
That's the problem, the wonderful Amusement Vision studios was closed after Sega merged with Sammy. The only studio inside Sega capable to do the job is Sumo Digital. And give F-Zero to Sumo Digital looks like an amazing idea ;)
My copy won't save. I opened it up and it doesn't have a battery that needs replacing. Can anyone help me? :(
we need a new f zero game
I´m posting this from the year 2014 when you already released the F Zero GX review
He opened a twitter account a couple weeks ago. When Mark plays more Klonoa games, we're sure to hear his name.
F-Zero GX is easily one of the best racing games ever made. It's too bad on the GameCube it didn't do well. The game is just balls to the walls awesome.
I actually say that this is the best F-Zero game of all time and a must have for GBA owners.
The anime they aired for this on 'Fox Box' was kinda interesting, would be much more interesting if they license the anime & release them 'Uncut.
With the upcoming Virtual Console release on the Wii U (march i think it was), and the addition of GBA games, this is one i really want them to release on it!
Every F-Zero game is great... I really like this one, even if the story isn't needed... Climax is even better.. but Japan only.
and f-zero x don't forget the amazingness that is f-zero x
I mean if you had F-Zero on Wii U it would be hi-def and you could finally see that captain falcons birth mark is actually a giant panda tattoo.
lol @ 4:37 Goalllllll "explosion" Wonderfull!! XD
are they any good?
Never understood how ice tracks could affect hover cars.
Pro-tip, tap gas repeatedly on sharp turns to improve friction and slide less.
also my parents are dead. :
Played the hell out of this, got it from the bargain bin near the end of the life of the GBA.
F-Zero GP Legend is a much better game than Maximum Velocity cuz the tracks and handling are a lot better and tolerable. Hated the handling in Maximum Velocity.
GP Legend Legendary handling and tolerability
@@Sd46o Yeah. It's like playing the original F-Zero.
I have the original and this is so like it.... I want. And the music IS awesome
It's my favorite racing game of all time.
why don`t you just order one off ebey?
YES AN F-ZERO GX REVIEW
More F-Zero love pls ;_;

it's called getting good
Actually you press "down" to tilt your machine up
I will never get why Jody and James aren't just Samus and Fox (in name, not necessarily a literal apparition)
Actually the Japanese exclusive F-Zero Climax was the last F-Zero game.
Do F-Zero GX!!!
i have this game still in box factory sealed. bought it at half price books for 3 bucks
you should do "f-zero CLIMAX" for game boy

5:02 Yeah! Someone pass the space crack!
5:02
I swear you mention people watching you in the future every episode.
Considering that hardly anyone purchased F-Zero GX on Gamecube. I'd argue that the people abandoned the F-Zero games first.
To not get damaged after a jump, just press up.
I was half expecting you to stick it in a Atari 2600.
4:38 HAHA
Yeah! Someone pass the space crack!! Lol
YEAH! someone pass the space crack!! LMAO
Is it just me or the map of the track suddenly dissapears.
i hate people who say say first....great video thought
Only in some aspects such as sprite scaling/rotation and CPU speed, in other aspects such as resolution and sound the SNES is superior.
Oh sorry, not Big Blue. The championship race, wherever that is (Mute City?).
True that, but they could just team up with Sega again. But then, can Sega do it again?
Sorry for the 7 year late reply, but the problem is that Amusement Vision is long gone, and they were the ones who developed GX.
@@DavidBunnyan Sad to hear, but it's been forever.

no, wait it's just Fizz Wizz not space crack.
Be a hero not a zero!
Kinda sad we never got the sequel of this game :(
Why do I have a feeling this game is based on some series which has the infamous FALCON PUNCH clip?
sonictheimmeenpootis I'm pretty sure they were released alongside each other
We want a new F-ZERO game
his name is captain falcon? So his surname is captain

304! Oh and yeah Wii U needs an F-zero.
Giant Pandas ftw!
F ZERO GX REVIEW :D Possibly my favourite game of all time
They need to re-release this on Wii U and 3ds Virtual Console! :D
Hi. I’m from the future and they already have 4 years ago. You’re welcome
OMG F ZERO GZ SO GOOD :DDDDDDDDDD
Honestly, I feel like there doesn't need to be a new F-Zero game, since GX is so good.
Leave it to grumpy cat to piss someone off.
review F-Zero X, the 2nd best F-zero game ever
It was but only 13 episodes out of the 51 got played before they canceled it
GP means Grand Prix bud.
