River bolo float fishing with stewed wheat

  • I recall a classic fishing bait - stewed wheat - while showing you how to prepare it and then proving it's still effective as ever, with a quick session on my local river Wey. I fish bolo float in a deep swim and catch roach, dace and even a surprise perch. One of the last warm afternoons of the year and then a nice final hour's fishing before dark.

Very enjoyable video, will be trying wheat next summer as I imagine works better in the warmer months.

    Great video, thanks for sharing.
I've tried wheat as bait once or twice and remember that my first fish caught on it were prussian carp (Carassio gibelio).

    Thanks for another great video.
I use stewed wheat all the time, but always as a change bait, never on it's own.
Which brings me to the question of feeding, I've always been hesitant when it comes to loose feeding stewed wheat, believing it to be quite filling for the fish.
I never feed more than a couple of grains every cast, even if I'm catching well on it.
How do you loose feed stewed wheat? After seeing the tub of wheat you took to the bank, you're clearly far more positive with the amount of feed than I would be. Thanks

Thanks and a pleasure. I agree on the filling nature of the bait. Usually start off feeding very lightly (5-10 grains a chuck) and only up the amount if or once the bites are coming more regularly. But starting with just 2-3 isn't a bad idea until you know there are a few fish interested. Little and often. It's also a dense grain and, much like hemp, sinks quickly, so can be good for keeping fish feeding near or on the deck. A pint is generally enough and that's another reason why it's so cost effective. I also know carpers who swear by it for pre-baiting, fishing in the margins or spodding out to create a carpet.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
I think I need to be a little more positive with my feeding. I should also try a few sessions with stewed wheat as my only bait.
It's amazing how this once popular bait has fallen out of favour when as your video shows it's very effective. Even as a change bait, it picks out the bigger stamp of fish in your swim.

Hi are you catching on the bottom with the wheat i have had the odd fish but normaly try to fsh off the bottom ,maybe i need to get out there and give it a serious go on my local river, and experiment by only taking wheat with me.

Hello, thanks for watching and commenting 👍🙏😎🎣 It’s a while since I made that video (well, a year perhaps), but I’ve just come home from the exact same swim, where I caught really well on hemp and casters (nothing massive but a good 10lb of roach and dace during a short evening session). I reckon wheat would have picked off the better fish but I didn’t have any with me. I tend to fish it just tripping bottom or maybe an inch or two off it. As deep as possible without the float regularly dragging under. In my experience it’s a bit like hemp and tares - meaning it can be deadly on its day but does need fishing without any other type of feed and it can take time to switch them onto it. Like an hour or two, even in a decent swim. Great to hear from another angler using a classic old bait 🎣🐟

What type of fishes does this bait works? How about mahseer?

Wow, I would love to try using any bait if I could fish for mahseer! A dream fish not available in the UK. However, I am lucky enough to be heading to Thailand soon, as a 50th birthday gift to myself, and hope to catch some exotic (for me) and monster-sized fish there...
