I stopped drinking like I used to in October. I'm 42 now. I drank 2 nights in the past 3 months and it just wasn't worth it. I went from drinking once or twice a week to not at all. He's so right, it took me so much longer to recover as I got older, I wasted at least one day following the night of drinking, I made awful decisions when I drank, I wasn't the best mom I could be. I don't wake up with anxiety anymore. I am productive on the weekend. I'm a better example for my kids. I feel amazing. The sleep thing is key for me.

The piece about finding yourself and understanding relationship with alcohol is key. It's the "why" behind why you started drinking/depending so much and it'll relate to why you want to stop. It is undoubtedly hard to stay sober when the temptations start coming but if you circle back to the "why," it'll be easier to ward off the temptations. Find the high level "why" and it can be quite easier.

I'm almost at 3 months. Like you I was not a heavy drinker (at this phase of my life at least!). Also like you my reason for quitting was the Andrew Huberman video :). I gave myself a 6 month target, but at this point, I don't think I will go back. For me it's easier to just not have to debate in my head whether or not I will drink at this particular event or not, the answer is just 100% no drinking and then I move on.
I have social anxiety and would use it as a crutch for that. But I've replaced it with taking an edible, so I think I will try to stop that as well to officially work on my anxiety without any crutches.
In terms of sleep and energy and mood, I haven't noticed massive changes because I wasn't a heavy drinker, however I would say I am just very consistently feeling well rested and calm. I used to be tired and cranky the next day or two after drinking and that is gone.
But more than anything, I just feel better knowing that I am taking care of my future older self by not damning them with an alcohol soaked, diseased body.

I agree that it's hard to be aware of the benefits of stopping drinking alcohol, it soon becomes the new normal. I have often done 40 days off alcohol and never before considered totally giving up, I think if you don't have a serious problem it's harder to reach that solution. It was the 19 March 2022 that I decided I really shouldn't do this anymore, why concern myself with eating a healthy diet, getting fresh air and exercise only to drink such a toxic product, it just didn't make sense anymore.
The main problem for me was that I have no homing instinct when I'm out, I also have no idea I'm drunk!
Like you I listened to Huberman and really thought about what he said. Until Christmas Day 2022 I didn't make the definite decision to 100% quit alcohol but I had gone 281 days with only 5 glitches. Now I feel confident I won't do it again. Apart from all the usual benefits I have noticed I have rather a strong sugar craving, hope that soon wears off!
    Thanks for your videos 😊

Thank you for this video. I've noticed that I have already started the process of quitting alcohol in much the same way that you recommended in this video. I'll try to summarize my story. Last September 2017 I quit smoking. And like you reference about vices alcohol replaced smoking because I ate the whole elephant instead of taking little portions. I had gone from drinking once or twice every week to drinking once every day. Between 2017 and now I have gone through breast cancer and been declared cancer free as of last year March. This past year I decided to take the first steps in quitting alcohol, but instead of eating that elephant, I educated myself. Then I did a 3-day challenge. After processing my experience of what I've learned from having no alcohol for 3 days I did a 7-day challenge. About 2 weeks ago I did go see my oncologist and told him about my process and what I've done to try and eliminate alcohol by replacing the better habits he gave me the okay to go alcohol-free for a full month. Since my journey, I have been filling the void of alcohol with artistic hobbies and reading more. I'm trying journalling but It's hard for me to process my feelings and I sit there staring at a blank page until I start doodling.
