      @@3rdDegree_ Because of the drag coefficient of your skin relative to the suit. I don't think anyone wore briefs in Olympic competition after 2004. The last major meet they did so was 1996, still to a degree in 2000. The jammer has been in place the past three Olympics (2012, 2016, 2020/21) and seems like it might last awhile.

      DannyProductions nah they’re made. If he doesn’t choose to put in the work .... never would happen. You just don’t show up!
      However, he has advantageous natural traits that others do not.
      His long body, perfect build for a swimmer, tall, freakishly big hands and feet and is doubled jointed in the shoulders and elbows. Then his V02Max is also off the charts. So in some ways he was probably born for greatness but he had to put in the work.

      @@sammu101 Lane 1 is also harder because the fastest swimmers are in the middle of the pool and get to see on both sides and push each other. Lane 1 doesn't have as much visibility and they can't ride the wake of the faster swimmers in the middle of the pool. The concept riding the wake in swimming is similar to Formula 1 cars drafting behind the car in front of them before passing them.

    What strikes me now is how different breaststroke was 15 years ago. That wide frog kick they still did. You wouldn't be caught dead doing that today.

      tenningale ... In the 400im this is still relatively common, Chase for example uses it quite frequently. It’s important to remember your essentially swimming the pace of a 400 Breast, which obviously demands a slower tempo- kicking from the knees has only really become essential in the 100, it simply isn’t sustainable for most swimmers even in a 200.

      @@juke7618 Yeah, they changed the rule in late-2005 I think. Phelps improved by about 8 seconds between here and Beijing, about two seconds per stroke, which is incredible.

      um if it was a 200 breast you need to go out fast but conserve energy which is why a wide kick is better
      unless you know how to use a narrow kick like kitajima

    He is a master at getting distance per stroke. Just wow! The freestyle length was amazing. Also, this was before they allowed a single butterfly kick in the breaststroke pulldown. Does he still have the record?
