Fallout 4 - Next-Gen Update Is Broken on PS5 & Xbox Series - No HDR Support Either

- When I recorded the Video the Next-Gen Update for PS5 & Xbox was broken. I am very sure that it get fixed soon but it it still disappointing that it happened in the first place.
The game will likely never have HDR just like Starfield. The LUTs are in SDR, and it's not so clear cut to just add HDR. Also TAA is for SDR only. You can check out my RenoDX mod for PC since I had to rewrite the shaders to add HDR to the PC version.
The thing is the back compat on xbox series offered auto HDR. That now is gone.
The Auto HDR Support from the game was removed on Xbox when Xbox Auto HDR implementation is superior compared to how Playstation does it.
I think the patch messed with the xbox backwards compatability frame boost. The setting is still on even if you can't see anything
Never saw a reason to use frame boost when there is a 4k60 mode offered in one of the mods on xbox. The mod is also making it impossible to tell the difference between quality and performance mode since they're both 60fps lol.
For HDR just take the pc version with the latest patch and use RTX HDR. Works like a charm!
Remove / uninstall the game from ps5 and after that can you choose ps5 version from ps+
F is wrong with this company? Again leave it to modders for proper fix?

Honestly, I wasn't expecting much considering it's Bethesda. They have barebones support for HDR even in Starfield, expecting them to go back and add it to a 2015 game is... optimistic at best.
As a PS5 user that owns the game, I can confirm that the performance/quality modes do work there, but they aren't really that different. Shadow quality, textures, etc. all look pretty much exactly the same. Draw distances go out a bit further in quality mode (mostly noticeable when you get out of the Vault and look out in the distance) but that's pretty much the only difference that I have found. Loading times are also much shorter at maybe ~3-5 seconds compared to like 30+ on the old PS4 version.
The biggest bummer to me is that they have zero support for Dualsense triggers/rumble. It's just got the same basic controller vibrations as the PS4 version did. But then again Skyrim didn't support this either, so I guess that was to be expected.
this, basically no diff between quality and performance besides slight draw distance. I compared side by side screenshots on both modes on ps5 with my OLED. So im doing performance mode as I may as well just get higher frames.
@@kotic33 Yeah, sounds about right. I guess there could be some minor dynamic resolution at work, but if there is it’s so subtle that it’s almost impossible to notice with the naked eye.
I used to have auto hdr support for this game on Xbox now there is no hdr support at all.
I just downloaded the update on PC, the ultrawide "support" lacking as always, can't even get inside the vault at the beginning due to a bug
I tried the new native PS5 version with a 120Hz 4K monitor, the default mode is Quality mode, and you can "visually" clearly tell it's running at 40fps in the 120Hz container (monitor osd shows 120Hz as well), which is quite good switching from the (at the same time) updated PS4 build, which is still capped at 30fps! wtf. But one thing that sortof bugs me is that the PS5 version when running at 120Hz / 40fps mode, it doesn't look as "SMOOTH" compare to say, Spider-Man 2's 40fps "Smooth VRR" mode. SM2's 40fps implementation is probably one of the best 40fps/120Hz experience I've had so far, It's so GUUD. Wonder if it's some frame consistency / frame pacing issue since it's 1/3 of the 120 refresh, you se, even as old as the 60Hz standard, a 1/2, half-rate, 30fps game can still have these frame inconsistency problems, which is really really stupid... (I'm looking at you FromSoft... AC6 on PS4 still have frame-pacing issue... WUT DEAR IS IT!?)
The 1440p mode is real and you dont really need a 1440p display you can just change the output res on the ps5 to 1440p if your 4k display support the resolution and then you get the best mode for me because performance mode yeah got the 60 fps but shadows, vegetation and lod is really low for my taste so i did the output res thing and 1440p 60 fps mode with all the bells and whistles is a no brainer
In 2024 console players are still hoping and screaming for native 4k 60 fps and they are happy when they get 4k 40 fps for a 10 years old game. The situation is pathetic
They should stop licking the balls of Sony and Microsoft and stop buying their consoles.
Secondly, they should stop buying games running at 30 fps.
And finally they should stop playing on 4k display when their console are made for 1440p display.
Guys! Do you see PC players running a 6700xt or rtx4060 at 4k. NO ! Why ? Because it is 1440p gpus. and like consoles those Gpus get destroyed at 4k in most modern games.
30fps is not a gaming experience. Not at all. It is a torture for the eyes, the brain and the soul. It should be forbidden and avoided at all cost.
consoles are almost always played on TV's. It's been the culture since the literal beginning. There are no 2k TV's. AI upscaling exists now though so 1440p rendering upscaled can look really good. It does a better job anti-aliasing than traditional techniques, at least nvidia's dlss does. XESS is coming up very fast though, it just needs more detail, but it does great for jaggies and fsr is just garbage. :( 3.0 IDK yet.
The consoles just need nvidia gpu's and the graphics would improve significantly on similar hardware specs. I had to uninstall Ark Surivial Evolved on my series X. The character creation screen is unbelievably bad at upscaling. First screen you see after starting the game. It looks like 800x600 on my 65 inch TV. The pixelation and jaggies are truly next level bad. My TV also has good upscaling, it's just ridiculous. Gameplay itself looks "good", but the framerate turns it into a blur/jutter fest on my 65inch OLED.
Next gen consoles after this gen should honestly be quite good. 4k 60 locked and 4k 120 unlocked with games supporting frame generation for even higher framerates on demanding titles.

The only problem I've had on PS5 is game crash when I go to Far Harbor. There is some flickering issues, but the game plays fine. My mods are working. The performance mode works great.
I gotta say I’m playing on PS5 and the update is very good..yes no HDR but the ps5 ‘always on’ mode works wonders here as it makes it looks so good and buttery smooth 60fps..yeh enjoying this game again..

@@camcooolback4115 In the PS5 system settings there is an option to have HDR always on, even if it's not natively supported by the game.
For pc is even worse.

Delete Fallout 4 PS4 version than buy and downloa free PS5 upgrade. What I do not undestand on my LG C2 when I open game optimiser menu performance mode off 120fps, performance mode on 60fps. You have to set PS5 HDR always on for HDR.
With the old version you could still preset FPS Boost and Auto HDR on the Xbox series X and it looked better than it does now after the (next gen update) 😂

Quality mode: 30 FPS*, 4k resolution, ultra settings, should not require dynamic resolution scaling.
*When connected to a 120Hz display, Quality mode will target 40 FPS.
*When connected to a 1440p display, the title will run at 1440p resolution at 60 FPS w/ ultra settings regardless of rendering mode
the lack of HDR support is a shame. Fallout 76 supports it
Currently playing on PS5 with an LG G4 65" and both modes seem to work as intended and although theres no native HDR support unfortunately, it looks better than before to me and actuality looks pretty good imo. Only problem I'm having is occasional crashes.
I had no issue downloading the next gen update this morning. And I only have the ps+ version. So I’m assuming it has been corrected on Sony’s end. But there is definitely NO HDR still. And I highly doubt it will be patched in. With that being said, I am still pleased with the performance option. Playing on a LG C1 with VRR enabled FO4 runs like a dream on PS5. However the PC version post next gen update somehow has gotten worse🤷🤷
My fallout 4 won’t even load anymore on Xbox x no mods and even redownloaded it. Bethesda strikes again

What do you mean you don’t need a 30fps mode? You do if the quality mode is attached. I don’t choose performance over quality ever so Quality 30fps is needed.

The 40fps (120hz) quality mode does work on my PS5, it was the default setting out of the box. I switched to the performance mode that runs with 60fps. No issues on the PS5 so far.
Unfortunately no HDR support which is a bummer.

@@GamingTech-RUclips It wasn't possible to get the free PS5 upgrade with the PS+ version for me. Fortunately I have a physical copy of the Game of the Year edition for the PS4. I was able to get the free PS5 update this way and also the DLC content.

Just says performance mode on or off on ps5. Resolution looks great with performance mode off.

Played on PS5. Performance mode was smoother. Played a bit. But I deleted it. Not good enough for a PS5 game.

This is what I got from dabbling & observations. I don't have data & calibration tools so just going off what I can see and motion of feels.
On Lgc2
Xbox Series X, No native HDR, Auto HDR is no longer checkable.
-Performance mode feels 60fps, visuals look sharp but not at sharp/crisp as quality mode. Panning besides the motion blur is very smooth, no choppiness.
-Quality mode feels 40-50 fps, very slight input lag on controller, very minorly. Not something many will notice if they aren't sensitive to game motion differences of 30/60/120.
-Visuals look slightly even sharper & clear over performance mode but not by much. Panning smoothness is choppier but playable.
PS5 (soo was hoping for haptics and adaptive triggers but none there in update)
No native HDR but...
If you go in console settings menu for display and turn on HDR always it will trigger Auto HDR in game. There's that at least, I guess.
Performance mode - feels 60fps and smooth, visually looks crisp in interiors and buildings but not so much outside areas, by no means bad but on par with visuals before patch. Outside seems blurrier that what I've seen on the Xbox series x, swapping back and forth. Looks to me like not much of a visual upgrade just more of a 60fps smoother patch in performance mode. Still, very smooth and helps with aiming.
-Quality mode, visual upgrade. Interiors and outside look crisp in foreground and in distance. Feels more like a 40fps and definitely not 30fps. Still smoother as opposed to prior version. Visually appears upgraded especially with auto hdr on and minor fps bump. Panning slightly choppy just the same as Xbox series x in quality mode. Still playable.
Since I have both consoles and fallout 4 versions for each console.
As of now, I'd recommend on -
Xbox series X, quality mode at a 40-50fps feel, unfortunately no hdr native or auto hdr.
PS5 - I'd recommend performance mode with less quality visuals but overall smoothness in feel and with the auto hdr always on so it kicks on in game.
Personally if I'm going to do a play through I'm going to play on Xbox series X in Quality mode. Just wish it still had at least the auto hdr but still fine without it.
And that concludes this book, hope it helps.

Go take a look at fallout 76 and you’ll be glad there’s no hdr mode 😂. FYI I think you need to actually own the game to get the next gen updates on ps5, not just the plus version. It was the same with Final Fantasy 7
For me on my 65” OLED with XSX it looks awesome. But performance and quality look too similar to me

should of bought it a week ago. season pass was 70 percent off and the full game was 3.99 and that version upgraded with no problems other than mods are mostly broken

All of these „improvements“ are a joke. On PC we don‘t even get any noteworthy improvements, no upscaled textures or anything and still it took them years to finally release it after the announcement?!
Thanks to the Next Gen update, I can no longer play it! When I entered the game, I started experiencing visual glitches where geometric shapes cover the screen, rendering it unplayable. The issue occurs both on the lowest settings with all features turned off and on the highest settings with all features enabled. My Nvidia drivers are up to date. Thanks for the “free” gift that you didn’t even ask if I wanted! I just ninstalled.
Thanks a lot, it's so sad though. "Next-gen" can be anything you want, it doesn't follow any standards. "Next-gen" could mean 8-bit graphics for some... :D We definitely lack industry standards for what "next-gen" games should be. First of all, I'd probably remove this "next-gen" wording altogether as it doesn't carry any useful information.
Use the 60 fps .ini mod for XSX. Higher fov, draw distance, most setting cranked up to ultra etc. And yes, you can still earn achievements with the mod enabled if that's your thing.
I can play at 30 fps but I have a Nintendo switch on my wall and would like to point out the obvious lol
Unfortunately the update was about as barebones as I expected it to be, including their “widescreen” support on PC.
This game has never had HDR, please do games that do..like the new Sea Of Thieves PS5 version.
I couldn’t see much difference when switching between performance and resolution except the framerate (PS5)

On my ps5 i played for 3 hours and had 0 bugs, all modes working as intented 30fps and 60fps, turning 120hz makes the 40fps mode quite playable! I wasnt also expecting HDR cause no elders scrolls, no fallout had it.... but it would help in this game since sun and sky blows out too much during the day... but it is what it is
But the thing is… on xbox, we have auto hdr before. Plus in the mods section we already have 60fps 90 fov mod… so I only see downgrades on my platform… so please understand that not everyone win with this update!

Just a wild guess: Wasn't this on the Xbox already 60 FPS with that 30 FPS to 60 FPS mode for some games? Maybe that kicks in when switching to 30 FPS? I don't own a Xbox, so maybe this is completely nonsense.

Unfortunately, bo issues with trying to upgrade the psplus free version. Sony do not allow you to upgrade the free version of any game that releases a ps5 update. You have to actually own the code

I tried on SX and yes, broken. Only 60fps performance mode. PS5 has both modes and I gotta say I love quality/40fps mode. Looks much cleaner. No HDR isn’t a surprise since the regular game doesn’t have HDR either. PS5 forces HDR if you turn the setting to ‘always on’ in the display settings on the PS5 itself.

Very surprised the consoles cant do native 4k 60 with this 9 year old game, Its so easy to run on pc.
Lol it's literally showing 4k60fps. Also the new PC version runs like shit can't hit 60 fps even with PCs that are 3-5 times more expensive than console

Ps5 however does still have auto hdr if you force hdr on at all times in ps5 menu for display settings.

@@camcooolback4115 I'd say not. Not accurate, no sliders, but hey brighter picture for those who it's an absolute must. I don't have calibration tools like gamingtech has to dial things in or get accuracy readings. On ps5 fallout 4 with hgig and auto/fake hdr I didn't notice any cloud/sky blow out.
A friend of mine won't play non-hdr games anymore. It's either gotta be fake or native. To each their own, not playing a game just because hdr isn't involved. In my opinion you'd miss out on a lot of great games if you play or don't play something based solely on that criteria.

Didn’t even give everyone the upgrade that got the game free from the PlayStation plus collection when the PS5 first came out.
I tested it yesterday evening (Vienna time). I was able to switch between the quality mode 4K40FPS and the performance mode 4K60FPS. I was really impressed by the sharpness and smoothness that the quality mode offered me.
The performance mode feels like 120FPS to me and the quality mode like 60FPS.
I use a Xbox series X with a LG C3 55”.
The lack of proper hdr is a downside for sure.

Thats not right. You probably got a Series S. On Series X you can go to Settings and choose the graph-mode.
I tested the game on the X. There are several reports that the quality mode is currently not working (at least on the Xbox)
Maybe its random. I got the GOTY Edition and can choose between 2 graph-mode. One seems Like 60fps and the other is 30 fps

@@mvp4lithuanialmaooooo yes I watched the video and he's wrong period 💯 fallout 4 never had HDR it was using auto HDR and FPS boost in BC and the two graphics modes are working fine lol if you have a 4k 120hz TV connected it automatically does 4k 40fps in performance off aka quality mode and 4k 60 with performance on if you don't it does 4k 30 in performance off aka quality mode also if you use 1440p set you get 60fps ultra settings 💯 you'd think a tech channel would be able to figure this out 🤷
