Not enough of these very specific for Fuji’s autofocus strategies are on RUclips. Perhaps Fuji’s autofocus has suffered all this time because they take such pride in their customers’ ability to customize the camera that they believe the autofocus efficacy should also be in our hands… Great great job Pete!
Getting my X-T5 on Friday, along with the Fujifilm 150-600mm lens, and the 18-55mm which comes with it. Have to say I've found your videos so much easier to understand than many I've watched. Roll on Friday so I can get tweaking and snapping
Awesome, Chris! I'm so happy to hear that my videos helped you out. You're gonna love the camera and those lenses too! I'm going to see if I can get a 150-600 for review at some point.
Thanks! I'm sure your suggestions will help in taking better photos of my electric kids...😂 Lots of different settings but till now I have big problems about focus
Now I've ditched the Sony for an XH2s and an XH2 one issue I'm having, well a few but one that stands out from your video is the eye af and the orientation difference I'm finding in the sensitivity of the camera finding the eye, in view orientation eye seems quite sticky whether in large zone or tracking and can switch the eye ok when use your setting however when i orient the camera to portrait then the eye AF seems a lot less sticky, at times does not pick up the eye just the green box for the face then it may find it but loose it, switch back to view and more reliable. Used all your settings from this video but on assigned to a custom dial C1. there then seems to be another issue, I have called C1 studio so all the settings are as yours on this video but added a WB, ISO, SS and Ap for a base setup along with all the EYE af and Af-c etc, hold all the settings great apart from the one that you need for studio is to turn off preview exposure and that does not allow to be assigned in a custom setup. I do love coming full on with Fuji but they still are lacking features and functionality the likes of S, C and N give us and then it works. For a flagship pro spec body I would expect them to have ironed out these little niggles. We are on the 5th firmware now and still wanting. COME on Fuji, time to step up to the plate. Cheers for the Videos Pete...
Hey Karl thanks for the comment! I agree with your sentiment - I love my Fuji gear but they still have a ways to go. The exposure preview is a nuisance I've dealt with too, so I assigned a custom button to it. But it still is a hassle because I when I turn it on/off with the custom button it sometimes I think it's in one mode when it's in another. Very strange.
@@PeteCocoPhoto and let's not mention the new 56mm 1.2 on the Xh2, in eye af and af-c as to your settings its pretty rubbish, 33mm 1.4 is a lot better so why the hell did they not make an actual portrait lens have a LM and stop making stupid choices, at times I think monkeys control Fuji decision making. Almost every other brand is getting it right, sadly not fuji, unless your a fuji fanboy then they can do no wrong. 56mm is a little better on the Xh2s but still has issues...
@@karlbratby4349 I have no idea why they released the new 56mm and didn't give it a proper fast LM af system. I 100% agree with you here. It would have been the perfect lens if the AF system was good.
Pete, let me ask a question. I am doing a volume shoot this weekend. Would you still use the af-c setting because I won’t be shooting multiple photos of each pose? Thank you sir! Hope maybe you do a workshop some time……
Hey Robb! I wouldn't change the way you are doing things before an important shoot without testing it out first. Stick to what you know works for you. I use AFC pretty much all of the time now but I never experiment with new settings at a client shoot. Try out my AFC settings in a zero pressure environment so you can work the bugs out and feel comfortable with it. Hope this helps!
Thanks! I like the Sandisk Extreme Pro cards like this: amzn.to/3xU7fju The CF Express cards are more expensive but are very fast for video recording and writing.
Thanks, Pete. This is very helpful for a new Fuji user like me. I have a question, though. I have set custom buttons to face detection on/off and another one to right/left eye switch. The face detection button works, but the left/right eye switch does not work at all (and I've tried setting it on a few different buttons). I tried setting the face detection with right eye priority, too, so that the switch button would only be changing left or right, but it still doesn't work (and I'm making sure that to hit the face detection button first, so it's definitely on before trying to switch eyes). Any ideas? Thanks again.
Thanks! Glad you are enjoying the vids. Did you try shutting off/on the face detection? I noticed it wouldn't pick the eye for me, the other day, so I toggled off/on the face detection and then the eye selection button worked. Not sure if this was a coincidence or if I had it face detection off but give it a try and see what happens. Fuji definitely needs to tweak the way this whole thing works, it should be more seamless.
@@PeteCocoPhoto Yes, I tried that. I originally had one custom button set to face detection on/off and the other on eye switch, but then I figured that the first button should have an eye selected (like you suggest in your video), so I tried that. I figured the switch would work, but it still didn't. I tried every combo I could think of, but still can't get it to work. I installed the new firmware that came out today, which didn't work either. Maybe it's just my camera or maybe my other settings are somehow incompatible, I'm not sure. All of that said, just having the quick option to turn face detection (auto eye) on and off is awesome! Thanks for getting back to me!
@@jim-iq4ep Very strange. I would try it with a clean custom mode that you haven't set up yet and see what happens. Maybe it is being prevented by a different setting.
I hear you on the stick not working as intuitive as before. The thing is it wouldn’t take Fuji much to make this change in their camera code. I just don’t understand why they can’t add a menu item that selects between the xt4 way of using the stick versus using the new way, as default. You realize they already have what they need in the code base of the xt4, and just need to migrate that piece of code to the xt5 code base. It wouldn’t take much to add the menu part to select which code to execute when the stick is activated. Honestly I wouldn’t expect this change to take more than a day or so worth of one coder plus a few hours of hardware testing in their lab, and some code regression tests to make sure all is working. The manual can be easily updated and placed in their website to cover this new feature. They can roll this update along with other firmware updates improving their AF.
Hello! On both my x-h2s and x-5, the LCD screen and evf become much darker when focusing when the camera is set to af-c and the aperture is set to, for example, 11. This applies when there are dark areas such as indoors in low lighting . Is there a setting like on the Sony for focus so that these can be set up in aperture priority at focus so the camera does not change the aperture down but uses the largest possible aperture during focusing or is there another setting that I have missed?
Hey Thomas! This is a very interesting question. I have searched the menu and so far can't find a remedy to this. It happens whether I have exposure simulation on or off, which is strange. I thought that with exposure simulation off, it would not change the screen but it still gets slightly darker when depressing the shutter half way. Wish I could be more help but let me know if you find a remedy.

Thank you! I think knowing how to use the system is a big part of it, but they definitely lag behind other brands in terms of speed and accuracy.
This is just what I’ve been looking for! Thank you so much!

@@PeteCocoPhoto Did the firmware updates made some change to the settings mentioned in here or is this still valid ? Thanks :)
This is great. I didn’t know we could customize the R/L eye button. So helpful.
Glad you liked it!
Very useful as I've just got the X-T5 and first shoot had AF running all over the place! Thanks Pete!

I find your tutorial on Auto Focus so helpful especially assigning a command dial and the L/R Eye focusing. Thank you, Sir! 👏🏿👍🏿

New to Fujifilm and this has been a very good tutorial.

Thanks - great, clear tutorial. I have been struggling with my X-H2 autofocus and I will try these settings today in a photoshoot. Best wishes.

How about subject detection do you have a custom setting for this

well - its better then T4... but still far from Sony level. Unfortunately because the T5 is a much nicer camera than Sony's A6xx series.
