I danced until 18 and started figure skating at 20. There are so many commonalities! The inner monologues, keeping the old shoes/skates, the infamous "last time," and the need to stretch your toes after training. Please keep making these videos!
OMG SAME HERE
Katherine Healy was like you. Ice skating and ballet. She eventually chose ballet but she was also in a movie called 6 Weeks (sooo good) and featured in a children's book - A Very Young Skater, both when she was young. So amazing
Then add spring board diving, then synchro into that. You have to be ridiculously fit for Synchro and ballet training seriously helps for obvs reasons. I’d never been so fit - you do like a ballet warm up, plus floor work/gym work/stretching forever before u get near the pool. Then endless lengths upright with arms up out of the water, just using legs to go up and down the lengths.
Then and only then do you start doing figures in the water… it’s exhausting! (I also did ice dance prior to the diving & the synchro. I loved skating so much…still have my boots too!) x
You can't make pre work stretching mandatory (I'm a corporate safety director) BUT it is highly encouraged by OSHA to have optional pre work stretching and ergonomics....
Pre start stretches are a big thing here in Australia. Particularly on mine sites. There are trainers employed specifically for this purpose... that's my job
@gofreely the only real reason OSHA says they can't be made mandatory is the fact that if someone get hurts stretching it becomes workman's comp, or if you make it mandatory it could violate ADA if someone can't do it and is the only one sitting out because that in a way forces them to disclose private medical info
I think in Japan they do mandatory corporate morning calisthenics. But maybe that was only in the '80s. Not sure if they still do that.
@@LoyaFrostwindthey do 😊
It’s mandatory in Japan for those in construction trades to do stretches/exercises before they start work each day! My dad worked on a special installation for Universal Studios Tokyo and that was the first thing they did on the job!
That’s really awesome, not only better or your body but I bet it was great for team bonding too!
what happens between being a dancer and a teacher?
the desire to share the pain grows, "I had to go through this, no way you guys are getting off scot free!"
Okay but the worst dancer math (it's across all dancing and actually even music performance) is when the instructor tells you the counts to a passage but then tells you the counts aren't important and you should just feel it. Then you go ahead and "feel it" and get yelled at for not being on the counts. Then you do it by the counts and get yelled at for looking like you're counting!!!!!
think I just had a flashback. lol
I AM GETTING MY POINTE SHOES TODAYYYYY
AHHHH CGGGGGGG
(idk who u are but still CGGGGGGG)
Edit : I’m not en point but I am going on point this year!!
Congratulations!!!
OMG! Congratulations! I hope you enjoy every second of your pointe journey! I’m getting mine tmr!!! 🎉🎉🎉
You got yours one day before me:) congrats!
The last time isn’t just for dance. My trainer in riding always says’ one more jump!’ And we all know he means like 5-10 more 😂
Opera, too.
Marching band, DCA, and DCI too. Ours was "one more 'gain." 😂
The “what ballet dancers really think when dancing pas de deux” had me rolling lol.
I was brushing my teeth while watching and nearly spit out my toothpaste when I started laughing at that part 😂
I had a choir teacher that would sing the lyrics like that last part. 😂 she would be like “ok people with conviction! And …. ‘In sleep 👏he sannnngg tooo meeeee-uh’ more phantom!!” 😂
I remember when we did Bolero and the costume was bright, shiny blue tank UNITARD!!! That was the most unflattering, unforgiving piece of dance wear on even the slimmest, fittest of us!!!
The construction picture is a morning "Stretch and Flex". A lot of general contractors and insurance companies require this on their jobs as it's been shown to help prevent strains, sprains, and other soft tissue injuries. It's a pain at first, but the guys like it after awhile as it really helps to loosen up and warm up before work. It also improves flexibility.
Why did i get so excited and happy when I saw all those construction workers warming up. I love this. Doing this could honestly help alot of people possibly not get injuries. Also this is the "last time" im making a comment.
Morning Stretch and Flex has been mandatory on every job I’ve been on and with every company I’ve worked for in construction 💪🏼🙆🏻♀️😁
Cheer coach - one more time means one more IF its perfect 😂
But it is never perfect...50 more times!
My pilates instructor always says "Do this 10 times... properly." idk how many that is!
Even in bellydance classes, last time NEVER means last time. As a teacher myself I am GUILTY of this.
I have always “one last time”d myself while practicing piano. It’s because saying “one last time” is not a promise I’m making to myself… it’s me trying to will it into existence. Because it will only actually be the last time if it’s the time when I accomplish whatever I set out to do.
my dance teacher is always like "yeahh guys i designed your costumes myself 😊" like gurl. we can tell-
I used to work for an airplane parts company and around 2pm there would be an announcement that everyone had to do stretches because a lot of people sat down for most of their day. It was really nice to get up and do some light stretching, just to relax the body
Pre start stretches are a big thing here in Australia. Particularly on mine sites. There are trainers employed specifically for this purpose... that's my job ❤
Sequin burn from costumes is something I have nightmares about. lmao
When your teacher says last time. It never means last time. No turer words spoken.😂
Watching this with my hubs in the background... He works in the fire alarm industry, but often walks construction sites. He said that at large job sites the workers do stretches. He said they're called "stretch and flex!"
We all learned this today! 🤣
I used to go to waltz dance practices and our dance teacher always told us, when we failed "that was a beautiful warm up, now lets do it again" also we heard like 5 "okay last times" before we ended a movement practice 😅
My teacher sung and sounded like this “DaAaAA DooOOooOo” or “ShAkE iT OfF “
As a construction worker, stretch and flex every morning is honestly the best thing ever, helps us not be sore throughout the day
I think dancing ballet so many years ago is helping my recovery from major foot surgery! Josephine you are just gorgeous!!
Good advice re strengthening the food muscles. I work in social care and we do foot exercises as part of falls prevention in elderly people. So a little ballet is good for everyone.
With what you said on the last one, one of my dances doesn't have lyrics, but it is SO hard to count! Even my teacher agrees 😭 It's contemporary, and everyone keeps counting at different tempo's.
1:16 my dad works construction and they have to do this for all of their “big company name” job sites. It’s my favorite 😂
I have Ehlers-Danlos and was genuinely confused about the freakout at the first TikTok 😂🤦. When you're hypermobile, you tend not to question hypermobility because those "unnatural" positions feel more comfortable (hence, why ballet caused me permanent damage).
FYI: Even if it doesn't cause pain/injury early on, with time and age, it adds up and creates future issues. The culture around "pretty" bendy feet and hyperextension needs to change, it's unsafe and increases risk.
they feel better than a regular standing or chair sitting posture? 😮
Hey somebody’s have flat feet, mine could never bend like that
2 years, 5 pairs of pointe shoes. We have to buy our own shoes. Dancing on dead shoes is SO fun.
I've been on pointe for 2 years and I've gone through 13 pairs
I’ve been en pointe for 1 year (this years my second year) I only have one pair of semi-dead shoes, and one current pair lol, which surprises me because my feet are so strong, but I guess it’s because we got strong shanks too
The amazon my husband worked in here in TN did this every shift until the pandemic hit and then it never came back
Cause they stopped caring went to more money do streches on own time mind set 😢
@@guppy0536 yeah probably.
It’s mandatory!! My wife is an electrician and they start their day like this
I have a last time trauma as well, but from orchestra. It really is a universal experience😂
It's called Stretch and Flex and my mom used to run it on the construction sites she was the site manager on. EVERYONE hated it because it was mandatory and you'd get written up if you didn't do it. The guys on site staged a walk out and the company cancelled it 🤣
I’m sooo excited for your baby!❤
1st: I was on point 6yrs as a teenager & still have all my shoes (for context I’m 44yo, danced at a very small studio, once a week classes, one performance a year = only 12 pairs but I love them and they make me happy).
2nd: My oldest (aka Kid#1) was an amazing tap dancer. They spent a couple of years learned under the academy’s owner who choreographed to the beat, but the rest of the time (including summer intensives & competitions) was under a national & world tap champion who choreographed to the lyrics & flow of a song which Kid#1 absolutely 100% definitely preferred.
The last time thing carries over into so many things. My band director was famous for saying last time and doing it like 20 more times.
i literally love your energy queen 🫶
I’m OSHA trained and they highly recommend a daily run down, a safety briefing, and a stretch to reduce injuries so a lot of construction companies do those 3 at the beginning of the day :)
When I was training in Hapkido, Master Rick had his own special way of counting. "Hapkido Math."
I would like her to react to what its like wearing rock climbing shoes . Also love the ballet videos!!
I haven’t danced in a zillion years but I still do piano toes every time I take my shoes off 😂
I so want to take up ballet as an adult - even just barre aerobics would do - but theres just nothing in my area 😢
So cute.... both the vids AND Josephine's reactions 😊❤
YESSSS a new tik tok reaction! I love these so much
Josephine always makes my day better
5:49 both my ballet and my jazz/contemp teachers do this lol. its so fun
I have another video suggestion for you. Just watched Darlene Gilbert en pointe while ice skating!! Crazy insane.
4:12 though I might not be in ballet, as a cheerleader and long practices I feel like this. Then I remind myself of my goals it really cheers me up 😊
I can relate to the lyrics teacher. I don’t normally count when I dance. I remember the music, which part should we dance this or that. In class, my teacher uses instrumental versions of songs so I sing in my head.😅
I’ve been dancing en pointe since august and I’m still on my first pair of pointe shoes!!
How often do you dance? What kind of shoe do you wear? Just curious.
@@KN_builds 1-2 times a week! On Bloch stretch pointe shoes not sure the exact name but that’s my best guess lol
@@emmaabb13 that’s great!
Teacher:last time
2 seconds later:ok now 192823738828173636373774times
Once I wore a costume and it was wayyyyyyyyyyyyy too small but the next size up was “too big” and it was basically choking me and I hated the look too
I love you Josephine you do such a gorgeous job
about 9 months en pointe and 2 pairs of pointe shoes ( i got the second pair a few months in because i had to keep regluing the first because my feet are sooo bendy that the shoes break in quicker
my favorite tiktok was the girl talking about ballet math...so real.
I’m a very young ballerina and my first photo shoot is next weekend! I’m so excited!
Wish we got a hour long reaction video at some point in the future. 😂
😎 security guard. 🎉 construction workers for warming up. 😅 ballerina math .
amazing video as always! would love if you did anything related to figure skating!!
Purple leotard= the hottest Dragonfly on Halloween lol
THIS GIVESS❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much for this video. It really brightened my day. 😊
I love these!❤❤❤
Last year my pre inter and inter jazz group got a neon pink with weird neon sequinned side strips. Also it was a unitard and very ill fitting.
I performed in a full body shine purple leotard last year! Literally life long trauma 😂
I love that you mention manual labor needs a warm up.
I wish I could move my toes. That looked nice.
almost a half year, 1 pair of pointe shoes :) i dance on them 15 minutes a week since i dont dance at a prof ballet school.
I used to be a wildland firefighter. My fire crew would do warmup exercises before we went out in the morning. Although, for us it was also a way to kill time while we waited for Incident Command to give us deployment location.
I was in a production of the wizard of oz my dance studio was doing (mostly ballerinas) and since I was like 8 I was a munchkin. However, I was in the lollipop guild. The other munchkins had pretty tutus, but I was in an ugly white and red polka dot dress with a matching bow. I looked like Minnie Mouse and I hated it!
My teacher was straight counting, I learned the counts incase I had to take over and teach but I danced to the feel of the music. Lol.
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS 😂😂😂😮😮😮😮😮❤❤
Yes I liked my own comment
0:53 My assumption is that the "security guard" is actually the choreographer.
I figured something like that
I saw a video awhile back of a dad, or security guard who had seen the cheer leaders so often that he could do the moves.
I did ballet when I was liiiiitle. My costume was shiny emerald green with a mix of emerald green and hot pink chiffon “petals”, that fell down and looked sad. It was hideuugh 😫
A lot of physical labour jobs encourage a group morning stretch to reduce injury rate!
But wont actually do it cause company thinks waste of their time and money so suggesting do it before you start day
@@guppy0536 depends on the job site and industry. I've seen it on lots of job sites before. Might be more common with some unionized jobs.
I don’t dance but I play water polo and while warming up when we are doing our sprints coach always says “last time so dl it your hardest” like five bazillion times
I've only been en pointe for one year, so my current shoe count is 1. I only have one 30 minute class per week for pointe
1, I just got my first pair of pointe shoes
2:38 I do musical theater and oh my….we have to wear bright pink suits. Like a regular suit, but bright pink…
I just started doing point and its been 7 months and i can now do the exercises without the bar
Would love a reaction to Le Bien Qui Fait Mal from Mozart L'Opera Rock! It's a French rock opera about Mozart but they specifically hire ballerinas for the dance ensemble!
Thanks needed these gighles an belly laugh's....
Finally I'm early once!
one time, i was preforming at a crappy theatre and to get to the other side to where my enterance was, you had to go under these bleachers in the dark and it was all dusty, and (this was right before the show started) i was getting to my spot to start and i stepped on a piece of glass, and it was in the dark and litterally everything went wrong. i had to get my tweezers and pull them out in the bathroom and i was late for my enterance.
The 'last time' also happens in horse riding lol
As a current assistant dance teacher.. I keep trying so hard to have my "one more time" and "last time" actually be the last time. But we've gotta do it until you at least get close to doing it right! (I teach 5-8 yr olds)
When I choreographed for my show dance group I often did it on the lyrics because it feels more natural to me. But most of the group just didn't understand what I asked of them. So I had to adjust my dancing which often felt so wrong...
this is my 3rd year on pointe and i just got my 3rd pair haha
"last time never means last time" yeah, every musician knows that too
It’s the toe ring finger that’s bruised for me Josephine
Last time is never last time, band kids know this too xD
What’s the protocol for nails and polish? During shows I’m assuming you can’t do fun colors but what about practice/ class and can you do long nails or do they need to be short?
My choir teacher wouldn't allow us to use lyric sheets because he hated the wall of quivering books instead of faces. So he would make us say them over and over. Sometimes he would do funny things to help us remember. He was my favorite teacher in elementary school.
I miss dance, I'm trying to get back in to it, and i need new pointe shoes!!! Do you buy chance know where to go for less expensive gaynors? I am poor, living in a motel 🤷
That black toe nail reminded me of that one episode of Bunheads where they were taking photos of their disgusting ballerina feet to win a competition with other ballet academies on which school had the best dancers. They thought that disgusting feet = hard working dancers = better dancers.
Does anyone else remember Bunheads? Sutton Foster did a great job in that. Too bad there was only one season.
bro the singing when marking it is literally one of my teachers 💀
ive been on pointe for four years and used 18 pairs of pointe shoes 👀
They do warm ups in Japan for construction workers.
