@ John Delynn Yes, seasoned rusted passenger car blocks were piled up outside the F1 engine facility. The blocks were deburred, machined, etc.I noticed they knife-edged the block webbing.I'm guessing they didn't want oil collecting inside the block as well as reducing the chance of a crack in the block webbing..

I've seen loads of different horsepower numbers given for this motor but I believe it said 1,430 hp. when I saw it in the BMW museum in Munich. They couldn't measure it at the BMW factory because the dyno only went up to 1,280 hp. The thing was that it was simply a case of a tweak or two in the electronics to increase the turbo boost and the only limiting factors were how long you wanted the motor before it exploded. It all ended when the pop-off (or blow-off) valve was introduced to limit the turbo boost.
There was a great story about the electronics. As anyone knows who has worked with automotive electronics, and especially back in those days, every board was a prototype and slightly different, with wires and solder all over the place. When BMW started producing finished boards, they couldn't get them to work like the originals. From what I remember it took them ages to discover what the problems were and so until then they had to manually rewire and solder every board like on the prototypes to make them work.

Absolutely amazing figures whichever way you look at it but 1500hp in qualifying trim for 3 or 4 laps and the engine was done.. not surprising really when it was running 11500rpm and 80psi of boost. Apparently they couldn’t accurately test more than just over 1000bhp on a dynamometer so it was a calculation made by engineers. But they were some of the quickest cars ever in terms of top speed.

After the beautiful sound of the normally aspirated Cosworth V8s and the Ferrari and Alfa V12s, the trubo engined cars were terrible to listen to. Instead of the howl and scream of the V8s and V12s, they made a "murrrrrrrrgh" sound, despite the incredible power of the engines. The really shocking thing about the turbo cars - after they introduced a turbo boost limit - was when the drivers put their foot down when exiting a corner. There was the typical turbo lag and then a sound which I can only describe as a huge box of fireworks going off in a thunderstorm, with pops and bangs and crashing noises as the limiter valve opened and closed.

No it is not really 1500hp, it's more in the range of 600. Not even half of what they say it is.

Nice clickbait title :-) This car never even had 1000HP, various sources claim 800HP in qualifying trim. The most powerful iteration of the BMW engine was used in the Benetton B186 with an estimated power of 1300HP during a couple of qualifying sessions.

ferrarikingdom You're the one that need some knowledge. The dynos "only" went to 1000 hp back then, yes, so they calculated the rest and estimated 1350 hp. The original target was 1500 hp, 1000 per liter, but they never hit that. Pat Symonds who worked on the engine (and coded its ECU) said the estimate was 1350 hp at full boost for qualifying. Another engine with smaller turbos was used in the races, power were down to somewhere between 800-900 hp.
A few years ago, a BMW M12/13 engine got rebuild and dynoed, the result was just above 1200 hp on full boost using normal fuel. Add to that they used toulene in the fuel back then and 1350 hp sounds reasonable.
