I still regret selling my '76 2002tii. I loved that car. The engine sounded so nice. I used to open the bonnet and just stare at it for hours.
I think you should buy it back.
I bought my truck before I was a full time mechanic.
And I’ll never let her go-
I agree! My first 2002 was a 70 and my second BMW was a 69 1600. Both slightly modded and gave me so many smile per gallon!
@@TexasRiverRat31254 what do they sell for now? (2002 and 1600) i really wamt one
When you weren't preening yourself in the mirror?
@@PaulLorenzini-ny2yw I've got to make sure I look good for your mother!🤣
The turbo manufacturer wins most unfortunate company name hands down.
Triple K turbos always had me questioning
I don't know...considering its BMW I think they go hand in hand.
It's 3 names: Kühnle, Kopp and Kausch
White Power suspension is a runner up.
WP suspension used to be “White Power” suspension, no joke. Big company too, KTM uses them
Engine produced a lot of power and lasted about 5 minutes... They've been applying this tech to their road cars ever since.
Minus the part about horsepower.
I'm transcribing a comment I made on another post about the M12/13 BMW engine:
"In 1997, when I was working with Gordon Murray at McLaren, developing the F1 GTR, I was one of the fortunate to be invited to a demonstration of the BT52s that run and won the 1983 championship. The demonstration was presented by the mechanics and also some of the engineers involved with the development of the car and engine at that time. I was one of the present who asked about the myth of using old engine block and the hp values and I was surprised when the Germans started laughing. They asked me why would they use old blocks if they could choose a much better quality cast to work with and that the myth of using old block was just it, a myth, that was no one really knows how it got started. Also, the engine never run more than 900HP during a race. Even in qualifying mode. They tried several times more than 4 or 4.5 bar of boost but it would break almost immediately. That myth started because one day there was a filming crew at the BMW facilities during on of the tests and they were running a lot of boost and the dyno was only scaled to 1000HP. During the run of the engine the pointer hit the top of the scale just before the engine exploded, but what was said by the reporters was something like the engine more than 1200HP! I'll always cherish very much those days and all the memories."
What is your identity to establish your credentials? I thought Paul Rosche himself claimed that they used old blocks with 100k miles. I believe he claimed this on his memoir.
I have read in Racecar Engineering that they tested stock block, but could not get it to hold more than 500hp.... And it was the marked department who come with the story of using stock used blocks laying in the rain to get the "stress" out of them... They probably couldn't see the difference anyway🤣🤣🤣
But then you must also remember that the test facility wasn't at BMW but actually at ALPINA in Buchloe right?
0:24 it’s a Decepticon 😈
Coolest engine name ever
Why a deception?
Paul Rosche war ein Genie des Motorenbaus - der Rumpfmotor wird heute noch im Motorsport gefahren
0:24 I didn’t know Megaton could transform into a F1 engine.
The reference taken was from "Megatrons cube" because as we know transformers wasn't a thing back then😂
@@Saito_Masa That makes no sense because its "metatrons cube"
@@uv77mc85sorry i meant metatron ✌️
This entire video was pure eye & ear candy for me !
Not instrumental music over the sweet, sweet sounds of the exhaust! I loved it!
The size of those turbos and how small the inductor and charge wheel are damn
Yeah it's mad looking at that compared to a modern turbo.
I just watched a video about one of the top builders of classic Minis. They have a top spec American dyno rated for 3,000 horsepower when most of their engines make maybe 100 in a rowdy tune. Hearing these old stories about “no dyno could ever measure this engine” always makes me chuckle.
5:51 You can even see the infrared glow. I bet that engine would light up the entire room on a camera with night vision.
Megatron - The coolest name for an engine ever 😂
thanks for the reupload
This video was very well done. I learned a lot. Thanks!
Thanks for a comprehensive and interesting documentary, it also reminded me of staying up late to watch Gerard Berger win the Mexican Grand Prix on TV when I was a youth, F1 was really something else then.
Again thank you.
This video is twice as long as the life span of the engine.
half expected a second Tatra video

I do believe the money they get from RUclips is real.

Great video. No AI. Enjoyed it!
my 2002tii makes 170hp on the k'fischer system still. lovely engine.
M10 and M30, legendary old school engines.
Pretty sure that they were using funky special fuel blends too, back then, cause you ain't running 80 psi on pump gas!😮😅😊
Yes I heard fuel cost 1000 dollars per gallon ,,must be good gear hey cheers 👍
If I’m remembering correctly, it was like 85% Toluene, a splash of diesel and the rest additives. I know they definitely used toluene and diesel mixed, just not the exact ratios or additives. Crazy fuel though!
Love that engine....its so choking and fascinating that this engine could output so many horses....😎💪💪
The best RUclips channel 🤘💯
I love these engines of this period in F1
Always fascinated me how the throttle was on the turbo intake, like a draw through carburetor setup.
Good times bmw
Fantastic footage.
Very interesting and exciting video! Thanks so much! 😃
This engine is the embodiment of "Here for a good time, Not a long time."
Reupload?
Seems like it. If I understand the disclamer correct it was some issue with copyright for some of the original video fotages in the other videos. He had to shorten some of the fotages. While i were writing this i heard a clear cut of this narrating 😂
Ludwig Apfelbeck designed the radial valve design. It was in fact used on some of the racing engines. The twin intake ports enabled the cylinder head to "breathe" better with less turbulences. It was found that single or "combined" port designs were more restrictive.
Yes, something Lancia with the Triflux engine experimented with years later in rally
Very good video.
Someone needs to do culture a favor and take the 1982 turbo F1 to an airfield vs a modern v6 and do a rolling start. Also give the driver a little bit of seat time to get familiar with the old car.
No need to hold the "good old times" a vague memory. Bring the beast to a track! 💀
with modern injection and tech it must be a rocket
Why not build one from scratch will be way more powerful
Not sure if it was the Beyond The Grid pod cast or a vid on youtube, but an engineer from that time said that with modern engine management and fuel systems they could easily get double the power they were making in the 80's.
The interviewer asked "You mean you could make over 2000hp?!" A: "Oh ya for sure, easily. And using the same boost."
The Hart engine manufacturer learned how to cast an entire engine block and head as one piece. This way they didn't have to worry about stretching head studs lol 🤯 I didn't even know that was possible, with all the machining you'd need to do to a new engine...
@@bassmunk power yes but the car wouldn’t have space for enough cooling under the same conditions make more power yes but not double
@@user-wn3ww5lw5j They're already doing it right now, in effect. Making the same power with half the fuel, with just the ICE not the power unit as a whole.
Engineering Explained has a great vid going through the insane lean mixtures they're accomplishing.
@@bassmunk the ice in modern f1 doesn’t even produce 1000hp but yes has a insane efficiency. The old ones used so much fuel because it was not normal pump gas and needed it for cooling
Swap it in a Miata immediately
It would even fit without issues
Lol one would hope
I'm American muscle car thru and thru but, German engineer's perfected engine's. Would I run out and buy a new BMW or Mercedes? No. I would run out a buy a 2002 and m5 it with the v8 or w124 with the v8 or 12 in a New York minute. Can't deny Japan either.
3:36 Sounds like an air cooled Kawasaki KZ1000.👌😎👍
Is this a reupload?
I could swear I watched this already
1:10 The small stroke cranks were such a small stroke and never revved high enough that they didn’t need counterweights
Edit: and only the early crankshafts were forged. Some time near the 80s they went cast
I dont know any engine that has power ratio of nearly 1 hp/cc besides this. Anyone got some other example ?
There's some highly modified drag RB26's, making like 3000hp. That's likely bored and stroked, but i don't think they're much more than 3.0L . There's some K series and 2JZ's modified to that same point too (not same power, but about the same hp/L), and also top fuel dragsters
I do know that top fuel dragster making 10-11k of horsepower, but it looks like its engine is huge even though i dont know its displacement but i assume it has more than 10 or 11 liters of displacement. CMIIW ✌️✌️
@@fausanhabibie7515 they're 8.19L (500ci)
A rocket engine.
@@fausanhabibie7515 It uses a 500 cubic inch Hemi.
That's a lot of displacement, but when you compare it to other engines that make 10Khp, its tiny.
Nothing boring about that amount of boost!
How much boost should we pump into it?
Yes.
@@mickeynismocat until ze enjine blowz up

Nitrogen hard casing!
What wristwatch is he wearing during the engine assembly? Starting at 05:10 min mark.
Looks like a nice chronograph, would like to know more about it. Thank you.
It's BMW branded in the video and a recognisable model with a V line in the transition between watch case and metal band.
Some Googling led to eBay Germany where one is on offer for € 349. Seller says it's a 2001 BMW-Williams Formula 1 model and the battery is flat. So it will be a quartz watch. And the question is if will run after you succeed to replace the battery. Omega taught me that the motors in e-watches over the years increasingly get a harder resistance due to wear and hardening of lubrication. At some point the tiny battery doesn't cut through that any mode. (In other words, spring-loaded mechanical watches have more torque and you of course know that x HP is the ability to apply y torque x times per minute.)
I wish F1 gets interesting again. I watched from kid. Born in 84. So basicly i watched every GP what we have to watch to year~2000 (as FIN, dad didnt pay anything) and when i work at restaurant i tried to to find sport bar to see things. Restaurants of my wasnt "sport"bars. Too "Fancy" but i did lost around 2 years for BAR dominance. After that got small spark but Hamilton stuff was so boring :/
Another crybaby whining about Hamilton. Bet you were fine with Schumacher and Vettel winning everything and bet you’re fine with Verstappen’s dominance.
A massive turbo on a 1.5L 4 cylinder that uses air, water, and fuel to stay cool enough that it does not melt itself to death... yeah that is going to have some major performance implications regarding throttle response and turbo lag.
Great !. Just the sound sometimes cuts the narrator off.
Why minutes 4.41 crankshaft doesn't look like pure 180 degrees? Secret odd firing inline 4?
It is a 180° flatplane piece
It's a shame modern BMWs aren't as robust as this engine was. Imagine if they had used 2 smaller sequential turbos, like Mazda did for the FD RX7 - they might have killed off the lag and had maybe not as powerful an engine, but one that could reliably finish.
Sequential turbos aren't needed anymore for those use cases as turbo technology has just made leaps since the late 90s. Single turbos make more power, faster and with way less complexity in the engine bay. Most of it is advances in fluid dynamics.
B58/ S58 are making over 1,000hp on the stock engine with just boost and fuel. 👨🏫
M10 engine was the best engine ever made.
Interesting, the Volvo Red Block turbo has similar specs and ultimate power.
I peed on a BMW and it’s not any faster…. Weird
I peed on my ex girlfriend s ,it took off really fast!
I bet the owner was p-ssed off though. 😅

That's a spicy 🔥 4
It always is, mes amis, most enjoyable to see a Bratwurst Buggy come to grief.
5 minutes? That's 55 minutes less than a BMW M62 V8 🤣
I’ve never heard of asking your employees to urinate on your engine 4:19
They believe that the minerals contained in urine can be used as additional reinforcement
I have a co-worker with a new BMW. I pee on it every morning. Help me convince him that I’m just helping him maximize performance.

Yes yes... engines were high in horsepower, but on what kinda fuel?
Kerosene or pure methane mostly

Something that should be mentioned is that these engines in F1 cars were SUPPPER unreliable. If this was in a road car it would blow up in a week lol
