    It doesn't take long to see why he didn't make the transition if you watch this video carefully. He's not a great skater even for the AHL. NO SURPRISE he couldnt' transition to the big league.

    I attended a coaching clinic about 9 years ago and Kevin Constantine was one of the guest speakers. One of the stats given during that 3 day period was that only 37 kids from North America for each birth year play more than 20 NHL games with meaningful playing time in their career. I think it's over 8 minutes a game. There are plenty of 1st and 2nd rounders that don't even play 100 games in the AHL in their career and are stuck in the ECHL. It's always amazing when some high round draftee can barely cut it in the AHL, but there are guys who don't get drafted and grind their way to the NHL. Getting noticed in the easy part, it's working hard and constantly improving is the challenge.

    Dallas had a defenseman sometime ago they thought was going the same route. One of the coaches had a talk with him. Asked him why he doesn’t practice at full speed. The player responded “I don’t like hitting my teammates!”. He eventually got his chance to play, needless to say he didn’t mind hitting the other team!

    The problem with Scott Glennie had nothing to do with injuries or commitment to getting better or anything and everything to do with he just stopped developing altogether. Simply put he just doesn't have an NHL type of skill set. Never did I look at Glennie, Schenn and Calvert and think that Scott was ever the better player of the 3... Some players just stop developing and that's why we need either a 19 or 20 year draft

    Well it looks like conditioning fucked him up the most. I get that injuries can mess up your conditioning up a bit, but you can still at least stay active to maintain good health and nutrition. Too bad he had concussion problems. Highly touted players who have failed to make an impact in the NHL shows you how serious and high level the NHL is. If he can manage to still improve his conditioning along with keeping his injuries a bit under control he would make a solid top-6 or 3rd liner right now. It's never too late, but that's up to him to do something about it. It looks like he's accepting that he will never play another game in the NHL again.

    It's a pretty long way for guys to jump from the jr's to the pro's. Some guys do make it look pretty easy though. In recent there's been a huge push from very young guys. I dont think i ever remember such a rush of huge talent flooding into the league, within such a short period of time. Still not uncommon to find a bust or two within the top 10-15 draft picks.

    • @j.nybergh7003
      @j.nybergh7003 6 лет назад

      Big reason for this "rush of huge talent flooding into the league" is that it has become faster and cleaner. Therefore speedy, talented players are needed while slower and perhaps stronger vets are not.

    • @QuarterMan88
      @QuarterMan88 6 лет назад

      Sort of... There's always been swings from smaller, and speedy'er then back to larger and stronger. Seems to be an eb n flow. na i think there's truly more talent coming from this younger generation.

    • @j.nybergh7003
      @j.nybergh7003 6 лет назад

      Clearly they are more professional coming out of juniors than they have been in the past. I mean they have a mindset of a pro.

    • @nicholasbenoite5847
      @nicholasbenoite5847 6 лет назад

      J. Nybergh two main reasons actually. The NHL is becoming a faster more skilled league, but also the cap situation makes teams rely on younger players. Not all rookies are a Connor McDavid or Austin Matthews, but not all of them are going to turn out like Yakapov. I thought the Oilers ruined him, but the truth is, he is a KHL player at best.

    • @j.nybergh7003
      @j.nybergh7003 6 лет назад

      You're right, there's the cap situation to look at. Although teams seem to overlook players past their prime (cheaper vets) in favor of younger players on their entry-level contract.

    Bro, what? Every single CHL team has good/great/amazing players. Alot of the time, a player putting up 80+ doesn't mean they will be a for sure NHL star.
    The amazing thing about professional hockey is the player drafted in the fifth round has the same exact opportunity as the player drafted in the first round. Every team is looking for something different and in hockey the most development for players is between the ages of 16-21.
    That being said, there a fuck ton of 1-4 round draft picks who never played a single NHL game. The great thing about hockey (unlike football and somewhat like baseball) is if you don't make the NHL, there are so many other options for professional, even semi pro, leagues to make a living in.
    Also, this player you're showing never had the hype. *A better example would be Nail Yakupov*, a guy everyone believed to be the next Kovalchuk. He was a useless bust. My close friends brother was drafted in the first round (like Nail) and got to see the 'aura' Nail had around him in the green room post draft. He thought he was a great before he even stepped foot in Edmonton, he failed miserably.

    Hard to judge a player but from this single clip, his skating doesn’t look very strong.

    What a bust!! all because he loved the image of the high profile of being hockey player but not the work ethic guess he was destined too fail.

    Dude looks kinda wonky on his skates, can he skate?! Is it just the replays? He looks awkward.

      yeah i noticed that too. looks like his strides are too short and his ankles are angled in oddly. i'm sure he skates way better than me but doesn't look like nhl level skating imo

      Yeah, Yakupov is so bad no one even comes close. Whether it be lack of points, or # of games played before he was out of the league as a 1st overall pick. He set a new standard for busts.
