I am a retired Navy nurse and I loved every minute of it, but am glad to have found your video, I have always wanted to have some idea of what the other branches of military nursing were all about. The AFNC sounds like more fun than the Navy. You are so upbeat as a person and make a great role model for Air Force nursing. Wish there were more videos of RNs joined the military in each branch! Not sure which branch to choose; I’m a travel ICU nurse who also loves challenge and travel and the military has always been in the back of my mind. I recently lived in a military town and loved how cultured and humble those in the military are and the people they have met in their experience. It brought back the itch to join. I feel like I can do more than civilian life.
I’m debating Air Force or Army.

Oh my goodness I am so excited that I found your channel!! I'm an AF brat about to graduate nursing school and I'm applying to critical care residencies and want to apply to flight nursing after I get experience!
Hey! So glad you enjoyed the video! If you do critical care you can commission as an ICU/ER nurse and then do CCATT. Which is basically like flight nursing but you take care of very sick patients with a Doctor, and respiratory therapist.

@@HollywoodWestern ccatt is a critical care team and they consist of a doc, nurse and respiratory therapist. They take care of really sick patients. Flight nurses take care of generally stable, medical surgical patients. The school for both is vastly different.

I truly enjoyed your video. I’ve been exploring all my options, I graduate with my BSN this December. I want to grow in nursing and explore and travel and see more than what’s just in my community at a hospital here. Do you recommend graduating and gaining experience first before joining the AF?
I think you can go either way. I know it’s very competitive to join right now regardless. I don’t regret working for a year at the civilian sector prior to joining. It was nice to see both sides of the spectrum. Hope this helps.

Hi Angel! Thank you so much for posting this! I am in the same spot you were as a new RN and feeling bored at my small community hospital here in Missouri. I am joining the USAF as a flight nurse and I am so excited to make a difference in the lives of our military service members. I did have a question though. Do you know anyone who is a USAF nurse and also has a spouse in the military? Also, I would be doing the Reserves, is there any differences that are substantial for those doing Reserves versus Active Duty? Thank you!
Oh I know plenty dual military. Like I mentioned you have to have a supportive spouse for sure. That is the key to success. The reserves is just one weekend a month. It can get overwhelming with civilian job on top of military duties butttt the bonus is like $35K a year for 6 years I think which is pretty amazing and compensates for time put in. Active duty is all day, errday! Haha so different but both have perks. Hope this helps.
What a great video I found! I really enjoyed watching your video and found there’s massive sources of information. I’ve been considering of joining the AF so bad lately, and still seeking out more info before making this decision. By watching your video, it really helped answer my questions a lot. I just currently got accepted into nursing and will start my first semester in the Fall. But at the same time, I would love to join the AF as well. Do you think it’s a good idea? Happy to help! It depends on what you’re looking for. The military isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but I am really happy in the Air Force and have had the opportunity to make a significant impact on my community. I hope this helps.
Great video Ms. Angel! It helps so much because I’m currently a LPN wanting to transition to my RN/BSN because I’ve always wanted to join the airforce. I love to travel and would like to know more. But one big question I did have is the retirement, did they go into detail about how to retire through the military and the pension/benefits. I know 20 years is usually the regular but can you retire in 15 years? Do they explain those options to you when you join?
Hi! Glad you enjoyed it. Yeah you have to do 20 years in order to retire with full benefits. I know the time line is different in the reserves and guard. Definitely ask your recruiter the requirements for retirement prior to joining. Good luck to you, I’ll be rooting for you.

Thank you so much! You're very welcome. No exams when doing direct commission, at least not for the Nurse Corps. Once you join you will have to do a Physical Fitness test though and pass it.

Hi! Of course. My pleasure. So you should start running a 5K once a week. Then start a push up and sit up program. If you google Air Force PT test it will tell you what you have to get in order to score above a 90 which is the goal. You got it! But definitely incorporating more running into your workouts will help

Hi! I loved this video it gave me some great insight compared to other videos I have watched. I was debating on joining the ROTC program and my end goal in all of this is to be a flight nurse for the AF. How stressful is it being a flight nurse? And how big of an adjustment was it for you, going from working in the field that you were in and then switching to being a flight nurse? Sorry to bombard you i'm just really curious and could use the help!
Hi! Glad you enjoyed the video! It isn’t stressful being a flight nurse but you are gone a lot. If you have a family it can be stressful on family life. It wasn’t a big adjustment for me because I love to travel and it’s just me and my dog. I left the medical surgical inpatient floor to flight nursing and honestly I love flight nursing so much more. I plan on doing a flight nursing question and answer I just haven’t gone into it this new year.

I’m not biased at all 😉 butttt I was deployed with the Navy last year. Made amazing relationships with some of the Navy nurses and even they would say Air Force has better quality of life than Navy. They do get killer locations though. I can’t point out differences because I’m not a navy nurse but if you don’t mind being on a ship for extended periods of time the navy is for you. I always advocate for people to join the Air Force because it’s just awesome and you’re on LAND! Haha. The navy is cool too. Like I said in the video it was my first choice initially. hope this helps.

How has patient care been with med-surg and clinic nursing in the AF? Is it similar to the hospital setting in the civilian world? When you first started working, was it in a clinic or a hospital setting on base?
It’s comparable. Patient acuities are lower than the civilian sector. I talk about it more in the video. I worked in a clinic, then inpatient ortho then flight nursing. Good luck to you!

So my process took about 12 months for the start of the application process to actually commissioning. I would keep in constant contact with your recruiter. Hope this helps.

Thank you for all the great info! I am considering it and I do have a question about air force deployment. Are nurses allowed to bring their spouses with them to any of the overseas bases? Do some allow, some don't? Or not at all? Thank you!
My pleasure! Yes when you get stationed overseas, you most definitely can bring your spouse. There are some exceptions like Korea. If you are deployed however you won’t be able to bring your spouse but those are usually only 6 months. Hope this helps.
My question is: Do graduate nurses have to go through the same rigorous, tough, and scary process of Basic Training??
Commissioned officer training is not nearly as bad as basic training. I think the key is to keep an open mind, listen to instructions, and prep for the physical training aspect of the program. You will do amazing!
The military was my dream career for many years since middle school. I’m 20 now and going to college to become an RN. I do enjoy the CNA class I’m taking right now but it never filled me up with passion like the Air Force. Till my boyfriend mentioned this. And I started to cry because it’s like finally. I can combine what I’m doing now with my dream career. And honestly. This is doesn’t feel real. Bc after many years I can finally do what I love along with my nursing skills. Although I just started college at Ivy Tech majoring in Pre-Nursing. This is my dream. And immediately my boyfriend saw a change in my mood. Been in a rut for a bit so this news definitely changed my life!

Hello! I know quite a few CRNAs. I'm rooting for you. I'd get one or two years as a civilian, join the AF ICU then put in for AFIT CRNA program. It is competitive but the AF will pay for your entire program and pay you your salary while you're going to school. It's amazing! Good luck to you and thank you for your support.

Yes! You can use tuition assistance (free money) to help pay for classes. My master’s was essential free using tuition assistance. There are also different programs (AFIT etc) where you can get your NP, CRNA, MPH on the Air Force’s dime. You will incur a time commitment. Hope this helps. :)

Are you going through a health professions recruiter? Whatever you do, DO NOT join as enlisted when you have your bachelors degree. Some not so great recruiters will tell you anything to get you to enlist. Don’t fall for it.

Definitely start looking at colleges with reputable nursing programs. From what people are telling me it is very competitive to join through direct commissioning so next option would be ROTC. Apply to colleges, get accepted into a nursing program with ROTC and go from there. Wishing you the best of luck!
Hey I am in nursing school now and will graduate in July with ADN. I’m going to start working on the RN BSN as soon as I pass the Nclex. I spoke with a recruiter last week, so I have to lose weight like 50lbs because of my height is 5’2. I’m 46 now and he said I have to in OTS by 49. My question is do you think my age is too old to join as a nurse? I have federal time that consists of 14yrs of federal time. My husband was in the military and retired and I had a federal job. Thanks for the support! Awesome you got it! Keep pushing. I think it may be difficult to adapt to military life at that age, especially because you will be coming in as a 2Lt and will have people half your age out rank you/give you orders. This is just my opinion. I don’t know your personality and you could excel at military life. I just know it’s not easy coming in at that age but if you have a strong desire to serve then the Air Force would be happy to have you.
@@AirForceNurseAngel Thanks for your honesty. My husband said that about age and adjusting to the environment because of my age, doing PT, and training and possible deployment. Right now I’m the oldest along with couple people in the class. My classmates are shocked when I tell them how old I am but don’t look the age. If I wanted to do the CRNA route I’d work in ICU for 2 years as a civilian then join and apply to their schooling? What is a nursing officers starting salary? And how high does the pay get within the first 4 years? Thank you.
Take a look at military pay charts here. We all get paid the same depending on our rank. If you join after 2 years of service you may be able to come in as a 1st Lt. You can apply to CRNA school through the Air Force but it is Extremely competitive. After 4 years you get promoted to Capt (2 if you come in as a 1st Lt) Pay chart below will show you how much you get paid base pay. You also get money for housing allowance that is not taxed. What is the difference for reserve nurses, I got flight nurse (I get nauseous on planes some times) or clinical nurse reserve options. From what I heard clinical nurse is just office work? Or do we get to get patient care stuff in.
Hello. I apologize for the late response. I can’t speak to reserve nursing but if you are a clinical nurse more than likely you will be working in a clinic and answering telephone consults while assisting your provider as needed. Patient care in the clinic is not as extensive for nurses and medical technicians. Good luck to you.
Hello, I just found out I was accepted into the Nurse Transition Program right after passing the NCLEX. I am excited but nervous about the journey, but I like to believe that I am making a good decision in my life as a 22 year old male. If I may, could I ask you questions about your experience with fellow airmen who went through the NTP?
Wow congrats! Proud of you. My experience with NTP nurses have been good. Many are eager to learn and offer a helping hand. My advice is always to remain humble, keep an open mind and absorb as much knowledge as you can. Nursing practice is advancing every day and with you being fresh out of school you have a fresh perspective. Don’t be afraid to speak up and let your ideas/suggestions/areas for improvement be known. Hi! I'm currently a junior in high school and already plan to join ROTC and probably pursue a career in the medical field. So you said you do have to work at a "ground" hospital setting before transitioning into being a flight nurse?
Congrats! You got this. If you join the reserves/guard I know you can commission directly as a flight nurse. Active duty, I think there are only a couple spots as a direct commissioning flight nurse. Otherwise you will have to work as a med sure nurse first and then branch out to flight nursing after a few years. I am not the subject matter expert on ROTC however. Hope this helps.
How fast do you rank up, or how easy do you rank up, what does it take to rank up?
So usually 0-1 to 0-3 (2Lt - Capt) is pretty easy as a nurse to get as a nurse. Usually you commission, wear 2lt for 2 years, 1lt for another 2 years and capt for 4-6 years. As long as you dont do anything crazy (kill a patient, get a DUI) you should make it up to Capt. after that 0-4 to 0-6 its based on your record and merit.
I hate that people forget that once you sign that line, you’re government property. And as you said it at 15:50 you don’t get that luxury of doing whatever, whenever and saying anything you feel.

Have you looked into RN Specilty areas like CRNA? Will the Air Force help you getting into these specilty programs?
So sorry for the late response. So there is a CRNA program the Air Force will pay for. It is highly competitive to get selected and you have to already be commissioned and working as an Air Force RN and have critical care experience. Good luck to you!

Hello! So sorry for the late response. I'm glad you got something from the video. I know nurses and enlisted that have joined in their late 30s. I'd recommend the med sure track. AF doesn't really have hospice nursing but there are many other routes and opportunities. Hopefully your recruiter was helpful. Good luck to you.

Hi im enlisted trying to go through the soar program to get my BSN and then hopefully get a medical job as a 2ndLT which afsc's do you think i can be allowed to get ? i think aerospace medical service is only for enlisted. thank you
Hmmm I am not familiar with the soar program. If you get your BSN, you can join the nurse corps. You can also be a flight nurse but need to apply for it. Good luck to you.

I am currently in my first month as a NICU nurse. I have decided to not go through with the NTP but rather as a civilian nurse with my year of experience. Should I still start the process now?
Lakenheath is my dream duty station! Did you meet many NICU nurses there or know much about that?
How strict are they on the weight and height requirement? Especially if ones BMI is great but muscle mass places them above the maximum weight for their height.
So are you trying to be a NICU nurse in the Air Force? I wouldn’t recommend that as the Air Force is getting away from such specialized specialties. They are focusing on broader nursing field that make people easily deployable (ER, ICU, Med surg, flight nursing). I would start the process about 6 months in. Contact a recruiter for the most up to date info. There weren’t any nicu nurses to my knowledge at Lakenheath.
BMI is used in the air force. Just pass your PT test and you’re good to go.
As a new grad nurse, would you suggest working civilian first in your preferred specialty to avoid doing 3-4 years in med-surg or every nurse coming in is required to work either OB or Med Surg? Because I want to work in the ER then apply for flight nursing as well
Hmm the issue is critical care in the Air Force is severely undermanned. If you come in as an ER or ICU nurse the likelihood of them releasing you to flight nursing is in my opinion low (just my 2cents, can’t say for sure). If you want to do ER, my suggestion is to do this on the civilian side for however long (1-3 years) then ask your recruiter to commission into flight nursing. Flight nurses are now undermanned so I think you are more likely to direct commission as a flight nurse now than before when it was extremely rare. Hope this helps.

What is the PT like for commissioned officers? What was the PT like in the 5.5 weeks? Is it just to get in? Is it quarterly, annually after the fact? Thanks!
So PT standards are the same across the board. If you get a 90% or greater you test once a year. Anything below twice a year.

I am a PCU for 3 year with psych experience as well.I am considering NP school for the fall 2022.I was considering Air Force réservé . I am help with tuitions and loan repayments. I want to complete NP first then complete my military service because I was wanted to military nurse but I wanted to get my BSN.not sure if active duties is for me because of school. What do you advice?
I personally would complete school first and then commission as an NP. There are options for loan forgiveness and NPs get bonuses you can put towards your loans. Just my opinion. Good luck to you!

Is it a good idea to join the air force straight after graduation and passing the NCLEX? Or get some experience first for a year then apply?
My opinion is just to join straight after passing your boards but I don't know your life or any specific circumstances. I do however have not regrets that I worked for a year then joined. It kinda gave me that civilian perspective and helps me appreciate both avenues. Hope this helps.

Hi! If you are going to join the Air Force as enlisted or an officer you will have to do basic training or commissioned officer training. I cannot speak on the army basic training but Air Force involves physical training and some leadership/military history courses. Hope this helps.

Hello! You have to pay first, graduate with your BSN then you can apply to join. They have sign on bonuses and loan repayment programs that can help pay off your school loans though.

Hello! I think that’s a great course of action. You can collect time in service, a bit of money while working to become a nurse. You can transition into active duty once you graduate and commission as an officer. Good luck to you!

I am graduating high school in two weeks and just recently changed my mind to become a military nurse. Is a Bachelors of Science degree with a major in Nursing the same as a BSN? Or do I need to go through the college of nursing where I am enrolled? If I do have to go through the college of nursing, is it okay if I applied for the spring instead of the fall?
