THANK YOU for this video! I am a new grad nurse, currently working at a level II trauma hospital on a Neurosurgery unit. I still have a long way to go, but like yourself, my love for the field of flight nursing started when I worked as an ED tech and went up to the heli pad to help transport a patient down to our ED. This by far is the most inspiring/helpful video I have come across for this nursing field.
Love this!! I have many years experience in trauma ICU and CVICU, and a CCRN and do CCT on the side. I am taking an entry flight nurse exam tomorrow and they tell me I’m a prime candidate. I hope so! I’ve always wanted to do this job. Thank you so much for sharing
@@angelsometimes1678 they did a zoom interview where I had to do skills but had to imagine what the patient looked like. It was hard not having an actual patient or mannequin so I didn’t meet their minimum score. They said to get certified as an EMT and come back to interview in a few months.
@@happyjohal4011 Hi! I’m in AB so I can’t speak for all of Canada but after you complete the RN program there is usually a minimum requirement for years spent in ICU or ER. For example, for STARS, it’s minimum 5 years in either setting. Then the following certifications are an asset: ACLS, ITLS, PALS, NALS/NRP, TNATC. There may be additional courses too. It’s a long journey from what I gather. I’m a paramedic now but hoping to do flight nursing later in life. 😁 Best of luck!
Great overview. 36 years in as an RN. No critical care background love hearing the great things RNs are doing and the interdisciplinary contribution they are making
Great video, I just had my first week in the er as a brand new RN, flight nursing is my ultimate goal this video not only inspired me but educated me on how to get there
I want to fly so bad... always wanted to do something like this. I dive and swim so I'm already into extreme environments and wildlife. I'm only an LPN right now tho... I now have a future goal.

Great video! I have been looking into flight nursing for quite some time. I have my concerns like anyone else, mainly getting acclimated to stressful environments again(as I have been in a clinical setting for most of my LPN career) (current RN student). thanks for the informative video.
I am a cna right now. i was thinking of becoming a flight nurse . i find it interesting. And always felt like i always wanted to help people for some reason.
Like seeing how other nations do this, I'm in England so our helimed (and the ambulance service trauma cars) generally run with either two critical care paramedics or one and a trauma doctor though doctor's who have specialized in pre hospital emergency medicine are becoming more common, there's a series on RUclips "helicopter er" that's been going for years and is good for showing how helimed has developed into taking the emergency room to the patient rather than the patient to the emergency room
@@careersteer6497 hi i want to become a flight nurse i am in canada working as a LPN( RN student), would you please let me know what are the intial steps ?
Hi Allison! I just ran across your video today. Glad you are still in the flight world. I do love the Reno area. Barb V was trying to get me to come over years ago while at Mercy Air, but I stopped flying after Riggs. Nice informative video. Take care and be safe.
Awesome video, really a very clear picture answering a lot of questions. I am a former woodland firefighter (12 years) with two seasons as a helicopter crew member. I have been considering this path as it looks really fun and rewarding. I am currently in nursing school, due to finish my BSN end of 2024. Does my helicopter experience count for anything? Will I still need 3 years as an RN in ICU or similar critical care?
Hi Behr, very likely, your helo experience would count a lot. Remember that employers are often dealing with risk management, and if they have a potential nurse who already has plenty of helo time, that will help you.
That's cool. For me the dream job is yaht or cruise ship travel nurse. However, I think you really need exceptional communication skills there, which i do not possess, unfortunately. Low tone and accent would probably be bad for the radio haha
this video was very informative thank you! For ICU reqs would the Picu- pediatrics qualify? I know it's icu but is the peds part too specialized? this is where I'm about to move to.
Hi Hamy, I would have to defer to the experts on that. What I would recommend you try is contacting either REMSA or Care Flight or another awesome Med-Evac company and specifically ask what their requirements are. My assumption is that they would be happy to tell you. Please don't forget to subscribe to the channel!
I can answer this if you’d like. It can get very loud. You typically will get a flight physical each year including an audiogram. If you might have noticed, she has ear plugs hanging around her neck. The flight helmet offers some hearing protection as well. I’ve been a flight nurse for 14 years and have “normal hearing” for someone in my age group. Good luck to you if you choose this path!
Protect your ears, exercise plenty, stay hydrated, and eat healthy meals. The better you care for yourself, the more you can focus on your patients. That truth holds up in all parts of healthcare.
“If you declare with your mouth “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). Now is the time to accept Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior. Obey His commands and repent of your sins because Jesus is coming back soon. Tomorrow isn’t promised.
