Summary from Wikipedia:
A Shaggy defense is a legal strategy in which the defendant denies that they were the one witnessed or recorded committing an alleged act. The strategy's name is derived from reggae musician Shaggy's 2000 single "It Wasn't Me", which is based around the concept; it was coined by Slate writer Josh Levin in 2008 to describe the defense used by singer R. Kelly while he was on trial.
"It Wasn't Me" by reggae musician Shaggy was released in September 2000 as the first single from his fifth album Hot Shot, eventually reaching #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and other countries. The lyrics of the song depict one man asking his friend what to do after his girlfriend catches him with another woman. His friend's advice is to deny everything, despite clear evidence to the contrary, with the phrase "It wasn't me". As the narrator describes all the evidence his girlfriend has against him, from a video recording to witnessing the cheating herself, his friend adamantly repeats "it wasn't me". Ultimately, the narrator says that the advice "makes no sense at all".

I get asked a lot about whether being a practicing attorney is like being a lawyer on TV. I love watching legal movies and courtroom dramas. It's one of the reasons I decided to become a lawyer. But sometimes they make me want to pull my hair out because they are ridiculous. Today I'm taking a break from representing clients and teaching law students how to kick ass in law school to take on lawyers in the movies and on TV. While all legal movies and shows take dramatic license to make things more interesting (nobody wants to see hundreds of hours of brief writing), many of them have a grain of truth. This is part of a continuing series of "Lawyer Reaction" videos. Got a legal movie or TV show you'd like me to critique? Let me know in the comments!

The default assumption is that the worst result of cheating is breaking up which doesn't require the law to step in unless you're married. Which cheating can be used as a reason to convince the court to grant a divorce.

Uncivil Law Yet your pinned video is literally called “Legal Eagle is WRONG about Captain Marvel!”
I hear rumors that it's possible for human beings to disagree on something and not be mortal enemies.
You can like someone and disagree with some of their views. I'm a big fan of the RUclipsr Logicked. He makes quite a lot of solid points and he knows how to argue and dismantle someone else's argument. But he's said several things I disagree with. That just comes with exercising your own critical thinking skills. Nobody's views match up exactly. Although not enough people realize this fact. Case in point (but working in the opposite direction), I recently figured out why my ex is so passionate about her support for Trump. She hates "bleeding heart liberal SJWs" so she decided to align herself with the complete polar opposite, effectively attempting to offset extremist views with opposing extremist views. Whereas my political alignment is closer to centrist. But I digress.
Extremes should really be avoided. Just because you like someone, doesn't mean you have to go all in on sharing their views. And just because you don't like someone, doesn't mean you should automatically join the opposing side.
Don't just follow blindly. Form your own opinions. Sorry for the wall of text. I just hate it when people pull this crap. It shows a complete lack of critical thinking. And that's why the world is so messed up right now. Too many parrots and sheep.

Oh, this got claimed 5 minutes after uploading. Already disputed.
Jamaican artist aren't like that. They would see this as free publicity and exposure. If you dont take their beats and verses and use it as your own like many American artists do they are okay with it.
@@Alucard632 It's not the singer, it's the record company. They're like vultures, but with a legal team.

Hehe alright Shady. Maybe he's right Grady. But think about the baby, before you get all crazy
Hahaha hilarious
There was a guy that used this defense on the Murray Show. Said he tripped into a woman's vagina.
What? It happens.
An ex once told me that a threesome she was involved in "just happened"... :P
@@notthere83 lol reminds me of seinfeld's yadda yadda sex.
That was amazing. So I believe I can ask for a consultation about my client, a woman called Carrie, who is accused of having trashed her boyfriend's car so thoroughly he was better off sending it to the scrapyard. She didn't even just admit to it, she bragged about it and wrote her own name into the car. Do I have the grounds to go with a temporary insanity defense due to rage about perceiving herself to be cheated on, even though that turned out to be incorrect?
I heard she allegedly "took an aluminum slugger to both headlights".
Sometimes, when I have a particularly rough day at work, I get back to this video to bring a smile to my face
This is such a stupid video idea and I love it. It's so fun, I love how professionally you argue. It's gold. Have a nice vacation!
Also: I was like 9 when this song came out and I'm German, so I didn't understand a word they sing, but I sang it out loud whenever I could. When I got older, I was ashamed of myself, but it's still an amusing thought.
it's ok native English speakers can't understand Shaggy either
I've probably done the same thing with German songs before, so don't feel bad.
For me, this was 1981's "Centerfold" - I was six at the time. When I asked my mom, she just said it was a photo spread in the middle of a magazine. So I thought it was about a girl that the singer liked who got a modeling job and got famous or something.
ruclips.net/video/BqDjMZKf-wg/видео.html
Very, very catchy tune for a 6-7 year old.
Wow, I wondered what language that was, I guess he's speaking german! That's... not how others speak in german though, though given how much they go Nein and Achtung, I'm guessing those dont know proper german... ;)
I do that with rammstein songs. At 14 I had no idea what they were singing but just knew I liked the music ^_^
Not gonna lie, I've always suspected it really was him. I have been waiting for this forever.
I always thought an important lyric in the song was "she heard the words that I told her". This sounds like he admitted everything to her when confronted, which wouldn't be good if you're trying to deny culpability.
I always interpreted it as “[girlfriend] heard the words that I told [girl next door]”, as in she heard all the dirty talk and/or proclamations of “feelings” he was saying to the girl during the deed.
I love how Shaggy's advice to someone caught cheating is to gaslight his girlfriend. "Oh, you were a terrible person? Only one way to fix it: Be an even more terrible person!"
I'm eating right now and nearly choked to death on "did she enter during regular business hours" :'D
Legal Eagle: goes on vacation
Trump impeachment trial: i'm gonna end this man's whole career
@Anzu Wyliei i know, i just meant that as he's on vacation he may fall behind on the whole circus.
A 'defendant' (Trump) who has publicly admitted the illegal activity and a lead 'juror' (Mitch McConnell) who has admitted that he is not impartial - I for one would like Legal Eagle's commentary on this.
@@Grim_Beard He seems very left leaning so I foresee alot o bias. Because in his house Impeachment video he never once brought up the majority abuse of power and the laws they broke when illegally obtaining e-mails from journalists and citizen.
@ Anyone with respect for the law can see Trump is a criminal. So maybe your trump propaganda is showing.
@@Grim_Beard He did have a video up about...2 weeks ago? Possibly 3? talking about the impeachment proceedings in the Senate.
I've been watching this channel for years and I can't believe I'm only just now seeing this video. 😂 A gem!
"We are going to analyse it in excruciating detail" that's the kind of content I'm here for! I love the attempts to create a legal defence out of this music video, which was both hilarious and informative. I love this lighthearted look at the law. Well done!
OBJECTION!!!
Shaggy isn't giving legal advice, he's giving relationship advice.
"Gonna tell her I'm sorry for the things that I've done"
Immediately wags finger "no no"
Question: is instructing a client to lie (e.g. saying "it wasn't me" when it in fact was) not itself a crime? Something like conspiracy to commit perjury.
Is the defendant really expected to be truthful? I'm asking because I'm not sure how that works in American law.
In Swedish law, only witnesses can be charged with perjury since neither the plaintiff nor the defendant are ever heard under oath.
@@enemixius The crime with which Bill Clinton was ultimately charged in his impeachment proceedings was perjury, for stating under oath that he "did not have sexual relations with that woman." Any claim you make under oath must be truthful.
However, the 5th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States guarantees the right not to be compelled to incriminate oneself- so a defendant can refuse to answer a question by "pleading the 5th." Of course, a person can always voluntarily confess, waiving their 5th Amendment rights.
Maybe technically, but to quote a defense lawyer on reddit, "the lawyer never goes to jail." The real reason most defense attorneys wouldn't advise lying is because the defendant has a right to not testify against themselves. Saying nothing is better than getting caught in a lie.
Feasibly a crime, but definitely a violation of the lawyer's code of professional responsibility. A violation that jeopardizes their license and livelihood. Considering how often clients are total strangers to a lawyer and have absolutely zero reciprocal loyalty and will throw the lawyer under the bus in a heartbeat... How much do you think lawyers want to risk their livelihood for that?
@@freddybenelli9100 Exactly. Bill Clinton lied under oath. He was under oath because he was called as a witness. The defendant is not under oath, only witnesses. It's incredibly rare in real life trials for a defendant to be called as a witness themselves. If they were, they'd be under oath. But it hardly ever happens.
"We have Patrick Willems, who is the director of this video..."
WHAT I HAD NO IDEA HE- oh..... this youtube video....
The amount of times I've made a "Shaggy Defense" joke makes me feel like I've been waiting for this video for years.
Your honor.... it wasn't me. Everything the prosecution has brought up is purely circumstantial evidence, and the video recording mentioned in previous testimony is inadmissible.

Just because he’s married doesn’t mean he’s into being bitten and scratched.
His reference to certain kinks neither implies nor discredits his relationship status or level of sexual activity.

Objection - He doesn't need to be an attorney to give relationship advice
plus the whole song is a joke. It is not exactly clear that it is so from the various narrative techniques plus the genre sometimes makes hard to understand what people actually mean and what is a joke but in this case it was made deliberately so it would look ridiculous. The contrast between the damning evidence and the defence "it wasn't me" is so stark that it makes the defence look ridiculous and this is why it ends with a resolution, that it is better to just admit your wrongdoings. But they aren't at a court of course.
