This is so weird for me tbh. Maybe it depends on country and person. My prof who is a CPA Lawyer when talk about her job, although she said it's hard but had fun with messy legal issues of family xD
Objection! Their suits are perfect for the style of song they’re imitating; early 90’s r&b. New Edition, Jonny Gill, Boyz 2 men. I argue a fitted suit would detract from the show’s immersion.
VERY scary that the lawyer jobs that pay well are petty pharmaceutical companies and the ones that don't pay well are like... helping disadvantaged people
that's how it is with most noble professions at the start. Doctors (at the start), EMTs, Paramedics, Firefighters, Nurses, Police Officers, and some Lawyers, don't get paid that well and it sucks.
It's like nurses. I had a friend who was an RN but she got tired of the chaos, staff shortages, working 12hr shifts, getting shouted at, abused, spat on, kicked etc. She went to work with a plastic surgeon in private practice and started earning much more money. She loved being a nurse but earnt more working for someone doing boob jobs and facelifts. He did medically necessary reconstructive work too. He just found an area of medicine he liked that happened to make him a lot of money. We'd all like to save the world and be altruistic but that won't pay the bills.
though it's owrth noting that the line is said by a villain, and in Shakespeare's day Lawyer's were perceived as guardians of the truth. So rather interestingly, it's a joke that nowadays get's laughs for the wrong reasons.
@@benthomason3307 yeah, but it is also true that " The line has been interpreted in different ways: criticism of how lawyers maintain the privilege of the wealthy and powerful; implicit praise of how lawyers stand in the way of violent mobs; and criticism of bureaucracy and perversions of the rule of law" (wikipedia)
he knows, he wouldn't have followed it up with a joke about why killing all the lawyers is a bad idea if he didn't get it. he probably just wanted to plug first :v
"I had some very interesting interactions with the lawyers from CBS. That's a story for another day but, uh, let's just say...I'm not super sad that just happened to that CBS lawyer." Now you HAVE to elaborate with a setup like that.
When I tell people my dad's a lawyer: "Oh he must make a lot of money!" "He's an immigration lawyer, so..... no." He didn't choose it for the money, thats for sure, and has had times of financial struggle, especially after 2008. Also, I've worked with him and the show is totally right. A major bummer a lot of the time. But, when things do work out right, its an amazing feeling, and he loves the community he is a part of because of his job.
In case you all didn't know: Adam Schlesinger, of Fountains of Wayne fame, co-wrote this and many other CXG songs. He passed away of Covid-19 this week.
@Music & Whistle msk a month later, and this was news to me. What was not news? there is not a single place on the entirety of the internet safe from people just intentionally being assholes.
I was dead inside before law school. Then law school revived me, convincing me think that I was going to ZEALOUSLY ADVOCATE FOR INDIGENT CLIENTS AND SAVE THE WORLD! 7 years later as a public defender... insides have never been so dead.
And they are demons who give what actually happens but in the end somehow make everyone angry and they start dancing outside court because they used a lot of rules of constitution
"I'm going to get a few very strongly worded emails from Transactional Attorneys but, what are they going to do? Sue me?" LOL! ROASTED! DJ M STONE has left the building!
1) The song is a parody of 90's rap dance songs (think MC Hammer, Milli Vanilli, Fine Young Cannibals , Will Smith, etc.) hence the loose fit and crazy shiny colours. 2) The guy who is singing the song was a lawyer who quit lawyering and joined Rebecca (the main character) at her pretzels business. Two or three episodes later he decided being a lawyer is better than that and came back to practising law.
#2 - actually, he left his lawyer job first and opened the pretzel shop. When Rebecca found out, she got a job working for him. She then messed it up, got him in trouble with the corporate company who was going to shut him down, and he decided he didn't like managing other people anyway. That's when he went back to his lawyer job. Then Rebecca decided to buy out the shop and make her own pretzel shop.
@ShalakumX Simba Since he mistook the reasoning for it seems like there was a reason. Could just be a joke or could be a lack of knowledge. But since all we were provided with was the mistake; an explanation was offered.
Apparently this lawyer that's commenting on the crazy ex girlfriend episode doesn't realise the colourful suits are from back in the nineties.. he didn't do is research that much.
My mom, who is a judge right now but was a lawyer, was with me when I was watching this episode. She started dying when this came up! She HATEDDD being a lawyer and she said this was all true and listen to this.
My wife's family lives in Fallbrook, and I can say that two visits a year to the area is PLENTY for me... And *not* because of the in-laws, lol! My first time in the area, we stopped at In-N-Out for lunch; there was a homeless guy trying to get anyone coming out with a bag to trade their food for his meth. Someone was nice enough to just give him a burger, and he threw it in their face because it wasn't vegan. SoCal: where even the hobos have entitlement issues.
I went to UCR because there was 100% placement if you got a teaching credential. What they didn’t say was that it would be in Moreno Valley. I quit the program immediately and vowed to move as far away from the Inland Empire as I possible. I HAVE NEVER GONE BACK. No college reunions, no nothing! But I do regret not going to law school (just a little bit). I had an internship out of high school for the corporate department of a San Diego law firm (early to mid eighties). I enjoyed the research and prep aspect of the legal profession. And I didn’t mind that we were often defending the “bad” guys. One of the name partners even said that I’d have a guaranteed job there if I passed the bar. Alas! I broke those lawyers’ hearts when I admitted that paralegal work was more appealing to me than appearing in court. So I majored in English and I ended up in contracts management for a university foundation for several years. I loved that job. And I really loved that my student debt was only a few thousand dollars instead of a few *hundred* thousand dollars.

I can't read what you said that Devin says. Why use something other than the standard 26 letters on your keyboard, when Latin mostly sticks to those letters anyway? It's not called the Latin Alphabet for nothing.
My mother works in family court and whenever my mom’s coworkers would ask me if I was going to be a lawyer like her, I would say “no, she taught me better”
Omg, I'm not a lawyer but I know that family court can get so, so ugly. We have a case of a hugely famous person in Brazil who died very tragically last year. Now the family of the deceased and the mother of the kids are in a huge fight and the press got involved and... Things are BAD.
My cousin use to work in family court. She was there for a year. Then went into property as her specialist. She said family court is hard. Emotional & physical.
jess0099 yep my mom got roped in early on in her career and it’s been so long since she’s practiced anything else that it’s hard to change. Upside is that she does enjoy doing the adoptions for loving families.
Objection! You have misrepresented my client's background. She was a lawyer in NEW YORK, not in Boston. There is a whole song about her being from Westchester and being close to her family just north of the city.
Oh, fun fact... I was just reading about Racheal Bloom, co-pretty much everything for Crazy Ex Girlfriend and lead. Her father Alan Bloom, was a healthcare lawyer. So that explains a lot, and how so much in the song/show was accurate. Her mother was a musician, father a lawyer, and she graduated with a BFA. I especially love this show, because I have a couple of music degrees, and now I'm going to law school! So backwards, but very relatable and enjoyable! I still live for the stage, but covid and all. Plus, I love law school!
XthegreatwhyX me too bud...me too. In all actuality, I may do this as a joke on my girl. She likes to randomly flip her arm over my face; payback may be in store.
"Come at me West Covina." Technically, depending on where you are at any given time, West Covina might actually be getting closer thanks to plate tectonics.
I practiced law for 5 years. Miserable experience. When I left the profession I think I was a week away from being in a bell tower with a rifle. Nothing is worse that working with lawyers....I became a terrible person when I was a lawyer. But I will say law school was an amazing 3 years. I loved it. It was stressful, exhausting, and amazing. I excelled at it. Graduated fourth in my class. Had an article published in the law review. Had a job right out of law school with a downtown firm. I thought I had it all figured out. Then after I passed the bar, I lived the 5 worst years of my life. At least I didn't become a alcoholic like most of the partners of the firm. One of the senior partners had to retire because he got so sick due to liver damage. He looked jaundiced all the time. Don't be a lawyer!!
wow that’s crazy!! good on you for working so hard but i applaud your ability to take a step back and do what’s best for you! if you don’t mind, could you elaborate on the “i became a terrible person when i was a lawyer” thing? i’ve heard this before but i’m wondering what it actually entails?
@@Zoe-tg4dl Aggressive. Mean. I was doing a deposition of a sweet elderly nurse and I made her cry. I realized...I'm not a good person anymore. Certainly not a kind person anymore. I can't list everything, but to sum up, everything about the profession is about conflict..it takes it's toll. When I decided not to be so hardcore in my application of the law, the partners quickly lost their ardor for me and my chances of becoming a partner faded away. Despite no meaningful drop in the income I was generating for the firm. And several guys I graduated with had already left law because they hated it. I decided they had the right idea.
Kevin H wow that’s actually kinda heartbreaking, like i can’t imagine having the time of my life for three years learning about law, and then practising it and hating the person it’d turn me into. so devastating. but for what it’s worth, i think your experience and how you decided to deal with it shows you were and are good person with a lot of integrity.
Super old comment, and super late reply, but I hope you're in a profession that you're happy in! It's a massive accomplishment graduating Law school, but an even bigger one to not be too proud to step back and go 'this isn't working out'. I know so many people working themselves to death because they refuse to 'Quit'. I hope you're doing good!
@@SallyBerry9 I have a job at a small size auto supplier. I have multiple roles, IT director, drafting and reviewing contracts with suppliers and vendors, and payroll. I plan to stay a couple years to establish some resume experience outside of law firm practice.
in case you don't know the background of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: She was working hard at a New York job making dough but it made her blue. One day she was crying a lot and so she decided to move to West Covina, California - brand new pals and a new career. It happened to be where Josh was but that wasn't why she was there
Dr. Kuhn, my objection is based on the fact there’s no such thing as “bird law” and that it only exists as a meme due to _It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s_ influence. So thus, there’s no money to be made from it.
On "Inside the Actor's Studio, " each interviewee is asked what profession they would never wish to attempt. Tom Hanks' answer to the question was, "Lawyer. It's like doing homework for a living."
@@misspriss2482 Software developer is another good one for that. A lot of your time is spent doing the equivalent of reading textbooks and going through practice assignments to learn the tools in question, then going through and refining/altering it in the form of "tickets" or "issues" which could be seen as similar to homework. It's not for everyone, just like lawyering isn't for everyone - and nothing is, for that matter. But if you love doing homework I think it might be worth looking into! (Not to mention demand could be generously described as "damned enormous" right now and the chance of that changing soon is minimal.)
@@superlukey3 Add statistician to that, because we got to do the same damn thing. We got to read books, read research papers because some of this shit ain't in the books yet. You got to go back and review past topics, its fun stuff.
Not gonna lie, you're making being a lawyer sound *waaay* more appealing than it ever did when I was a kid. The thought of arguing in front of people terrified me, but sitting a desk, doing paperwork? Hell yeah, 16 year-old me would've absolutely wanted to go to law school!
"Only the top 10% of graduates get a good well paying job" In Finland, we've dealt with this problem by just... not training those 90% in law to begin with. Seriously, the fewest lawyers per capita in any developed country, with about 10 times fewer lawyers than the US. Result: nearly 100% employment rates. Oh, plus law school's free. The flipside is that it's *really* hard to get into - only 5% of applicants are accepted each year, and only a minority of successful applicants was applying for the first time. Right now on a year long grind to try and squeeze myself into those five per cent!
@@JukaDominator the arbitrary rationing is not a cost saving measure. It's because of a century of lobbying by the legal profession :D. Every time anyone proposes or demands the intake be increased, everyone gets up in arms about it. Other university fields are substantially less "rationed". As to the freeness - obviously you are right over all. I am not pretending we don't pay for it in high income taxes, and I actually recognise that in the current US political climate this may be an important thing to remind people of. The effective tax rate can reach 2/3rds of your income, which is pretty brutal. A large welfare state absolutely has its perks and I broadly support it, but in the clamour to establish one in the United States it is sometimes forgotten or understated that it does, in fact, cost money - not just to some abstract group of ultra rich people, but to you. It may be worth it, but it isn't free or even cheap. What I meant by it, more, is that by not having a 300k cost attached, law school isn't more expensive to you than other options, so this is not a consideration when applying.
@@johannesmajamaki2626 which, in turn, means you have arbitrary ratonings instead of a proper distribution. In your case, they're shrinking the lawyers to raise their own salaries (this also happens where I live, which isn't the US), something doctors also do in the US.
When I was a fresh faced grad, I was thinking of going back and doing my law degree. I met a friend of my dad's at a bqq my dad was hosting, and he was a lawyer, specifically criminal defence. There’s an episode of Criminal Minds called “Tabula Rasa” where they try to convict a three-time murderer who has lost his memory of the crimes. Maybe you’ll find it interesting/infuriating?
I'm a huge fan of criminal minds and when I watched this episode, I was morally at an impasse. I found it difficult to want him convicted when he had zero recollection about anything he had done, but I wanted him to pay for the murders he committed. I asked myself if you could convict someone who wasn't at all like the person who murdered them. Would it be like convicting someone who didn't commit the crime? Would it be justifiable? But when he remembers what he did and he goes to his first body, I kinda felt bad for the guy. But it wasn't like it horrified him so I still don't know how to feel
@@kenziebritton3580 it's like that castle episode where there was a guy who pretty much framed for murder but he totally lost his memory. They thought the case was closed but they still investigated and found the true killer
@Kenzie Britton I've never tought about this. I am not a lawyer, but I'm gonna tell you what I think about punishment: it should be made very clear for the person who is being punished that they did something wrong and because of that they are subject to imprisonment or solitary confinement or ... well whatever the penalty is. Now that I read about this I am thinking that maybe, just maybe, terrible criminals should not receive death penalties. Or at least, they should be taken out of jail when they are mentally uncapable of undertanding their situation. The thing is I don't know if I would be ok with a rapist or a child murderer being well taken care of when they get old with the money that I pay in taxes.
This episode features an epic hotch scene where he takes down the lawyer in cross because the guy made the mistake of asking a rhetorical open ended question and hotch simultaneously lawyers and profiles the hell out of him. Love that scene even if it is unrealistic and would like to see LEs reaction to it
When he dissed the suits to plug his sponsor, I was like, "Just for that I'm not going to subscribe." When he trolled transactional lawyers all fearlessly I was like, "Lol Fine, I'll subscribe."
I need to watch Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. This video was a lot of fun and I love how you discuss the legal profession. L.A. Law, Law and Order. These were some of my fave shows growing up. Never wanted to be a lawyer but these shows really let us know that the profession was tough and soul-crushing. But you had a job to do and people need representation in court. Love them for it.
There's not a whole lot of lawyering in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, just a warning. If I recall correctly, the main character goes to trial as a lawyer only once (representing an apartment building after the landlord cut off the hot water). She's a real estate lawyer, so it makes sense there's not a lot of courtroom stuff happening, but even when they're in the law offices there's not a lot of law stuff happening. I mean it's a great show, but it's more about deconstructing romcoms and mental health than it is about law.
It's very depressing that the most critical jobs in our world today are incredibly underpaid. We need people fighting for the rights of other humans, for the environment, for the voices that go unheard. People fighting for those important things should be paid fairly. Corporations shouldn't be able to have the upper hand all the time just because they can afford to shell out more money for a more experienced legal team. It's completely unfair.
My two favorite things: Crazy Ex Girlfriend and Devin in a well fitted suit with a banger of a tie. When you smiled and said "it hurts my heart"...it kinda hurt my heart.
Pretty much every song in Crazy-Ex Girlfriend is effectively a parody of an existing musical reference, from "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" to Shirley Temple classics to a Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dance number to Fosse...the list goes on. It's a show full of great parodies and is endlessly entertaining and thought provoking at the same time.

Probably similar to "Don't be a Teacher" Which is to say, hard, mostly thankless, people think they can do your job, and, in the case of teachers, pays shit.
The Rambling Bard That sounds about right, but now I kinda what to hear an opposite song on a career that while it may seem questionable and society wise might seem dirty or seen as disgraceful, it actually yields fair enough benefits and pay
You either get intimately familiar with people's boldily functions and the gross, smelly, gag-inducing ways they can go wrong. Or you get to watch people die and grapple with the thought that if you had done something different you might have saved them until you're cold and dead inside. And then you get sued for prescribing drugs, or for not prescribing drugs, so you just huddle up and hope your lawsuit insurance rates don't go too high.
"It's not my favorite place in the world...I'm gonna get some hate for that one." To be fair, that West Covina isn't a super great place is one of the first jokes in the show. The first song is her insisting she moved because of how great the city is with it's pretzels and anime wigs while the middle school band kids get their instruments taken from them because the music program was cut. So I don't think any of the fans of the show are going to get mad at that.
4:10 "I'm really good at arguing, I'm really good on my feet" Meanwhile I'm over here looking at the 5000-word policy submission I've spent the last two weeks chained to my desk meticulously editing and footnoting.

But I do regret not going to law school (just a little bit). I had an internship out of high school for the corporate department of a San Diego law firm (early to mid eighties). I enjoyed the research and prep aspect of the legal profession. And I didn’t mind that we were often defending the “bad” guys.

Love that scene even if it is unrealistic and would like to see LEs reaction to it
I love that humming and moving his head to the rhythm of song the entire time.
When he dissed the suits to plug his sponsor, I was like, "Just for that I'm not going to subscribe."
When he trolled transactional lawyers all fearlessly I was like, "Lol Fine, I'll subscribe."
The Ally McBeal episode where she rear ends a guy on purpose to meet him, his laugh is awful so she breaks up with him, then he sues her.
Technically there is a LOT of law stuff happening: LAW BREAKING, especially in the first season.
"We try to avoid legalese because it's really not persuasive to a LAYPERSON." Dope, dude.
That sweet indochino suit is so blue I swear I was waiting for him to yell "Objection!" at some point.
My two favorite things: Crazy Ex Girlfriend and Devin in a well fitted suit with a banger of a tie. When you smiled and said "it hurts my heart"...it kinda hurt my heart.
Good to see someone appreciating Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
I finally figured it out. The song is basically Bobby Brown's, "EVERY LITTLE STEP."
Haha!
😂😂😂😂
Pretty much every song in Crazy-Ex Girlfriend is effectively a parody of an existing musical reference, from "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" to Shirley Temple classics to a Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dance number to Fosse...the list goes on. It's a show full of great parodies and is endlessly entertaining and thought provoking at the same time.

So how would the “Don’t be a doctor” song go?
Probably similar to "Don't be a Teacher"
Which is to say, hard, mostly thankless, people think they can do your job, and, in the case of teachers, pays shit.
The Rambling Bard That sounds about right, but now I kinda what to hear an opposite song on a career that while it may seem questionable and society wise might seem dirty or seen as disgraceful, it actually yields fair enough benefits and pay
@@TheKpa11 It'll probably "please do HVAC. You have no loans and make way more than you'd think."

"It's not my favorite place in the world...I'm gonna get some hate for that one."
To be fair, that West Covina isn't a super great place is one of the first jokes in the show. The first song is her insisting she moved because of how great the city is with it's pretzels and anime wigs while the middle school band kids get their instruments taken from them because the music program was cut. So I don't think any of the fans of the show are going to get mad at that.
I was thinking he'd get hate from people who live there. not from fans of the show.

They actually really glossed over one of the biggest drawbacks of being a lawyer--DEBT. Even if you really have your heart set on being a public interest lawyer and don't care about the low pay, good luck paying your student loans without the big bucks.
No, they mentioned student loan debt-but it was just one problem of many they listed, and they didn't really concentrate on it.

Surprisingly, The O.C. (a teen drama from the 2000's) got right the "no, no money" part right too. The father was a public defender and made very little, while the mother was a real estate tycoon in Orange County, CA. A story arc in the show was the husband struggling with the wife being "the breadwinner" of the family.
