My mom just asked me why I never became an immigration lawyer when I interned for one in law school, and I just started laughing and made her watch this ("No money, plus it's a bummer.")
I found it telling that when Burl Moseley did the song onstage at Radio City, he left the dancing to his backup dancers. Nobody can do all those moves AND sing & dominate the stage, without benefit of pre-recording and multiple takes. (His 2 backup dancers, by the way, were Gabrielle Ruiz and choreographer Kat Burns.)

I had a wonderful high school history teacher. He was so miserable as a lawyer he quit to teach in a Chicago public high school. He was a very happy man when I was in school.
I died laughing when they started in on the "no money" lawyer jobs because it's true. I'm one of the lucky ones with an awesome well-paying job in public interest, but I have a ton of friends who either wound up in soul-sucking jobs (because it is really competitive to get those no-money jobs) or they're living in a closet with five roommates. If you want to go into public interest lawyering, make sure you go to a law school with good public interest connections and a public interest loan repayment assistance program (basically a retroactive free ride). And get some work experience BEFORE law school. Don't just walk in the door the first day of law school and think, yeah, saving the world sounds cool. Public Interest law can be an amazing field, but getting a good job in it takes hard work, advanced planning, and some luck!
There is so much competition to get a job that helps people. It makes me think that if you really want to make a difference, your best bet is to just get a high paying job and then donate a lot of money so that someone else can have a job helping people.
For ANYONE banking on getting their loans forgiven through the public interest loan repayment, you need to read this story. www.npr.org/2018/10/17/653853227/the-student-loan-whistleblower tl;dr the program is complete trash and doesn't even work properly. Many people are now screwed cause they actually don't qualify for loan forgiveness for some bullshit reason.
@@MionMikan Thanks for making this point, too! And I should clarify for folks that when I say "loan repayment assistance program," I'm not just talking about the highly problematic federal loan forgiveness program. There are some law schools that have public interest scholarships, post-grad fellowships, and loan repayment assistance (where the school will help you pay off the loans if you go into public interest). These programs are NOT the same across all schools and prospective students should really research them!

As someone who graduated law school, passed the bar exam, tried practicing soul-sucking family law for a bit, and still doesn't know what he wants to do with his life, this song is way too accurate. If you want to be an attorney, good for you. It can be a very noble profession where you really do help people in need. But: HAVE A PLAN for what you want to do after you graduate. And a backup plan if that one falls through.
I'm about to leave an international law firm and honestly, I've been listening to this as my job interview motivation to find any other job. DONT BE A LAWYER.
I've worked in the law industry with attorney's AND judges for 7 years and every single one has complained of money and the work load. Lawyers are customer service representatives, accountants and marketers (if they have their own firm), and personal therapist. 🤦🏻♀️ I've also been told that if I go to law school at LEAST one professor will warn you to quit before its too late. There are some fun parts to the job but weigh it out before its too late. Good luck all those headed to law school!!
I'm a lawyer and I totally agree with this. No truer words. Respectable profession, yes but it's all bummer eventually. The mental and psychological exertion is way too much The "you'll never be on the supreme court" line got me reeling.🤣
Different bar associations regularly have trips to DC so lawyers can get sworn in at the U.S. Supreme Court. It's silly because the vast majority of them will never even have a case that goes before the U.S. Supreme Court.
I was going into pre-law. My father, being a lawyer, told me that you either had to be an ass, or with asses. I instead went into engineering. Same deal.
How difficult was it to make the switch? I am a history major (which might as well be pre-law because the only viable options are law and teaching + historical writing skills mostly carry over) who intended to go to law school but I am becoming increasingly disillusioned and thinking about STEM. I've always had somewhat of an interest in the natural sciences, even if it took me a while to develop the study skills they need, and my math skills are meh but I still got an above-average score on the ACT math portion (although it would put me in roughly the 75-77 percentile iirc which is obviously above average but not great).
@@yep9462 In my case, the math was the 3 years of the 4 year program. By the time you reach the end you're so ingrained with it that it becomes second nature. Engineering in then just application of that math and understanding physics on your field. Its actually kind of easy at the end.
@@nbeck7762 Thanks for the insight - what field of engineering do you work in? This song added to the enormous list of reasons I had to decide to change career paths from law. The song gave me a glimpse into my future and just the line 'you'll never find a lawyer who's happy', hit me so hard. It forced me to look around my old workplace, at all the lawyers and paralegals etc, and I truly saw that not one of them was happy with their life choice to stay in law. They worked stupid hours, ate/drank crappy things which affected their health and were always stressed out about something. I think about them all a lot as I take the next steps in my bright future and wish them happiness. I'm so glad I got out when I did and truly have had no regrets since... x

Okay but I love that this has nothing to do with Paula. She was truly happy studying law and then practicing it and no one ever gave her advice to give up on that dream. "you've never met a lawyer who's happy" - yeah, but then Paula passed the bar exam and she was happier because of it. I'm glad the show had multiple points of view on this. For Rebecca and for Jim, being a lawyer wasn't what made them happy, it wasn't what they wanted. But for Paula, it was a dream come true and I love that.
I get Paula though. She's cynical and already worked for years in the firm and gets how stupid the cases get. Her passing the bar exam was an easier transfer into beeing an established & competent lawyer. She already did the work, she just needed the acquire.
You should feel good! I was a lawyer for 5 years and I've just quit. It literally almost sucked the life out of me, I'd go as far as saying that most lawyers suffer from mental health issues/depression because of the INSANE hours you're required to do, and the extreme pressure/stress, all for something you HATE doing or, at best, mildly enjoy. Every lawyer I know is miserable, and we'd often gather in one of our colleagues' offices at 3am in the morning, while we were still working, and talk about how we wanted to quit and how much we hated our lives. But I'm the only one who had the balls to actually walk away. The money is good so people get mortgages, send their kids to private school etc. and then they have to keep working there to pay for their lifestyle. It's SO easy to get stuck and your whole life flashes and you have hated almost every second of it. So yeah, it's better to get out before even starting. And just know that if you pursue your dreams/passions and it all goes to shit, you can always go back to law school. It will always be there. (I don't recommend ever going back). Sorry for the rant.
Lia no I appreciate you kind of confirming what I was most hesitant about. I pursued law for the prestige and concept of power but I quickly began to realize those were the wrong reasons. I also began to realize what I really wanted for my life was a balance. Law would have given me for little life/work balance and I was scared of that. I regret losing out on the money and status, but I know my heart wasn’t in it and it’s not what I really would enjoy spending my time doing. Good for you for making the decision to get out when many others stay because they are afraid to take control of their life.
@@alexanderaroneo6975 Good for you too! I went in for those same reasons. Status (people think you're "better" because you're a lawyer, and respect your opinion). And having done it, it's not worth it even for status and money. What's the point of other people thinking you're cool when you hate what you do, have no work/life balance, etc. I'm not living my life for other people's opinions. There's no point having loads of money when you have no time to spend it and it doesn't increase the quality of your life because you are constantly in the office working. We only have one shot at this life thing, we have to do what we're excited about and find a way to make good money doing it. Anyway, I hope you have found happiness in what you're doing now! I had a wonderful high school history teacher. He was so miserable as a lawyer he quit to teach in a Chicago public high school. He was a very happy man when I was in school.
I love how every character in this show has a moment to sing an absolute banger, even the minor ones. It's so great.
Alternatively, one could do what I did and focus on company law; it doesn't "save the world" but it does help one's bank balance!
For ANYONE banking on getting their loans forgiven through the public interest loan repayment, you need to read this story.
www.npr.org/2018/10/17/653853227/the-student-loan-whistleblower
tl;dr the program is complete trash and doesn't even work properly. Many people are now screwed cause they actually don't qualify for loan forgiveness for some bullshit reason.
Please give me some of that well-paying public interest job luck. Pleas.e

How difficult was it to make the switch? I've always had somewhat of an interest in the natural sciences, even if it took me a while to develop the study skills they need, and my math skills are meh but I still got an above-average score on the ACT math portion (although it would put me in roughly the 75-77 percentile iirc which is obviously above average but not great).
@@yep9462 In my case, the math was the 3 years of the 4 year program. By the time you reach the end you're so ingrained with it that it becomes second nature. Engineering in then just application of that math and understanding physics on your field. Its actually kind of easy at the end.

@@milu3779 The official opinion of most lawyers is that this is because Shakespeare knew lawyers were really important to prevent coups.

I dropped out of law school on the day of my orientation and been feeling shitty since. This song kind of makes me feel better about my decision.
