Salt the ice up.
It actually makes it colder, and lasts longer.
IT DOES NOT MELT ICE. IT MAKES SALT WATER AND THAT DOESNT FREEZE AS WELL, so it looks like it melts faster. It actually brings it well down below freezing. Bout 10 degrees C depending on the container
Exactly!!!!!!!!!!!
Is this why people were screwing then selves up when they did the ice salt challenge
The reason salt appears to melt ice and is used on roads is because it lowers the effective freezing temperature of water. Normally this is at 0c, but because salt water freezes at a temp lower than 0c, it reverts to a liquid state until it hits that negative c temp - and is why pouring salt on ice won't work if winter temperatures are too cold.
Edit: It's about -20c for standard sodium chloride.
Crashish is actually right, salt in water brings down the melting point temperature.

Yeah but corrosion. And it would probably ruin the blocks and pump

Technically even these guys like Jay, Steve, Linus or Paul don't really count cuz they get all the hardware for free, so even if they screw something up, it's not coming out of their own pockets, so they can take much bigger risks with the hardware.

I don't remember if you have mentioned this, but one advantage of blowing cooled air from the air conditioner on the components (instead of normal fans) is that there is very little moisture left to condensate on the components. Because much of the moisture in the air condensates on the air conditioner's cooling radiator and so the cooled air coming out is quite dry.

Hello Jay.
Just in case you don't know.
Air-conditioned air is very dry, as the AC process takes the moisture out of the air.

Regarding condensation. The A/C not only chills the air it also "conditions" the air (hence the name) meaning that it de-humidifies it. Basically it dries the air by making more of the water condensate on the chiller rather than on the cards.

Q (heat) = 500 x flow (gallons per minute) x delta T (temperature difference). The amount of heat that can flow is proportionate to the temperature between the card and the loop temp. It looks like you're Currently piped out of one card and into the next (piped in series) so your second card is seeing warmer water. Look up "reverse return piping configuration" to achieve a parallel piping configuration. This will ensure you're sending the coldest water to each block, and it's self balancing so each card will get the same flow. No idea if you'll ever see this, but I'm an engineer who designs hydronic systems for buildings.

I for one am loving these videos between jay/paul/steve and seeing the different methods used to cool their cards
For the love of the overclocking gods, salt the water so it can drop below 0C and chill the rad more.
And disintegrate and clog the radiator? They would have already done it. They use freon in some rigs. But its been known to damage hardware.
@@jjs6568 He is immersing a rad inside the cooler filled with water and ice. The rad is also painted or anodized to the entire exterior so that should protect from corrosion. That's a heat exchanger, but we're not talking about adding salt or ice directly to the loop.
Salting the ice water would allow the temperature of the water the rad is submersed in to drop below 0C. The fluid in the loop (which does not connect to the ice water in the cooler in any way) should have an anti corrosive, anti microbial etc additive that should allow the temperature of it to drop to below 0C too.
@@Producer_Steve You're right, the rad will be fine. The pump, maybe not. But since they go LN2 and such, there's not really a reason to go with salted water. It's just one step on the way.
@@kaldo_kaldo Once he solves the RAM and VRM cooling issues, getting the fluid even colder is going to be the only non extreme cooling way to get lower temps. For $1 or significantly less of a table condiment he could be gaining more overclocking headroom through lower temps and that could push him over the edge.
Speaking of the VRMs and RAM. Even a little bit of extra thermal mass and surface area would help a lot with temps. It's probably worth it to use 3m thermal adhesive transfer tape to affix 3mm tall heatsinks or even copper shims again just for thermal mass. That could also be the little edge Jay needs to top Phil and Steve.
Ideally he'd be able to use thermal cement like what ships with Arctic Acellero Coolers, but that stuff is nigh impossible to remove. Taller heatsinks would also be helpful but it looks like the bodged block is in the way of that.
So salting the water, making sure the loop fluid can stay liquid at below 0C and giving a tiny bit more thermal mass and/or surface area to the RAM is probably the best and cheapest thing he can do without going LN2, dry ice, immersion cooling or other extreme methods.
@@Producer_Steve My main argument was that running salt water through the pump will be very bad for it - he could get a salt water pump but it would necessitate that.
I look forward to this on EVERY top end vid card launch, from now on.
I Love the friendly competition.

This is a great little competition! On LN2 your going to bypass Kingpin!
You could try getting a fish tanke and fill it with mineral oil. then place the radiator inside the mineral oil and have pumps push the fluid through the fins. to cool the liquid you should just toss some dry ice into the oil and good to go. the tems should be the same as water but have a bit more consistency
Why not use dry ice in the water bath? you could use some alcohol to lower the water's freezing point.
Any chance we could get some tests running World of Tanks and World of Warships? I'd be very interested to see 3080 or 3090 performance in 1080, 1440 and 4k. Thanks!

RipGN and ripjay(and now rippaul) is one of the best series. I enjoyed it last time and enjoying even more now that I have more knowledge about the whole process
Come out to Minnesota in the winter and try testing it to see if you can get higher score. We get some cold dry winters here in Minnesota.
Jay, I know u used to always say you don't need card radiator card loop, but maybe the 3090 is weird and this loop setup will matter in this case. You can try doing that and get same temps on both and also use same thermal paste, preferably Grizzly Cryo. As for air conditioning part, you can try to make additional box that would go all over the cards and add one or two 140mm fans at the end to increase airflow all over the cards equally. Additionally you can add salt to water to bring the temps even lower on GPU.
I love watching a person that is as big a klutz as I am. Keep fighting the good fight and who knows, you just might get to #1. It could happen.
You should try using a CoolBot with your AC to get colder temps out of it, their made for turning any room into a walk in fridge with any basic AC unit.
He should have a mains line voltage regulator and noise filter with a very short EMI proof Lead to the PSU. Then have the rig in a chassis to act as a faraday cage.

Man, the review for future GPUs are REALLY coming out early this generation! Can't wait to get that card when it launches in 2022
Some stick on heatsinks on memory would give it better temps, because of the added thermal mass and surface area for cold air.
If you want to prevent condensation, purge a sealed case with nitrogen gas keeping it at positive pressure. Then you can cool it down as much as you want
Despite the cold air blowing over the memory, you really need to place some fans for directed airflow... the A/C will just make that directed airflow colder.
The washers don't increase the spring tension. Regardless of
spring preload the tension stays the same. Same thing people are wrong about their cars. But great content, i like you.
Pull the bios from the higher boost table card and flash 2nd card with it. For pascal, the maxwell bios tweaker still somewhat worked, you could also use that to increase power limits and maybe try disabling gpu boost and going with static frequencies.
interesting matches for better results.
i have a couple of ideas i can't test myself
1. Use a Faraday cage to get rid of electromagnetic interference from the surrounding air
2. I know you tested how much pressure the threads of the water circuit can withstand.
and this should test the water circuit with a braided water circuit, what is better with negative pressure in the pipes or with positive pressure. water boils faster at negative pressure and has higher energy conductivity at positive pressure
ps. first test without computer components.
3. light is a source of radiation and spreads charged futons into an electrical circuit. (Reflectors are very strong) attempts to run tests in the dark. this will also help you with heat absorption in the room and maybe it will also cool the components more.
good luck with frequency calibration.
I am actually really enjoying these videos, the competition between you guys is amazing
I'm enjoying this a lot XD love the competition and humor between you guys
Regarding the the lack of VRAM heatsinks. One *big* reason just (chilled) air blowing over it doesn't work so well for heavy overclocking, is GDDR6(X) is flip-chip.
And on the 3090 it's tightly stacked in a serious hot-core sandwich, and the airflow can't get to the hot core. Those GDDR6X puppies run seriously hot as is. You either need some heatsinks on those modules to way more efficiently "draw out" that heatload and spread it out over much bigger surface area (air is a poor direct heat exchange medium for high thermal density) - or LN2. With LN2 the thermal delta is so high, it heavily chills the large bus and ground planes of the GPU PCB, which in turn "draws heat" away from the memory modules at the source (underside of the chip facing the substrate) through the traces. It does the same for the VRMs.
Also regarding the VRMs - you gotta remember that with the 3090s, you're pretty much _starting out_ with them pumping 400++ watts at stock boost. These cards _need_ those huge (and expensive) coolers on them for a reason, just to run @ stock. In comparison to ie. Touring, for this OC context you gotta treat them as if they were already shunt or bios modded and running a +60% power draw pretty much right out of the box.
Even with full cover blocks I would keep the ac pointed at the cards since that would probably help with the condensation.
You really should make an ac loop out of it with some r134a, just use the water blocks as the evaps.
i love this series and i look forward to this everytime a new gpu is released.
