    I always wanted to purchase the SKX diver watch but never got around to getting one. In my opinion it would have been better to issue a new version of it with the modified hacking and hand winding movement and keeping the original water resistance. The Seiko 5 watches are really good watches however if you are not worried about having 100 metres water resistance so only use it for normal swimming. There are so many variants to choose with different colour dials now and I personally own the varient with the green dial which I enjoy wearing. I also own a dress KX with the two tone rose gold bracelet and dial which is a wonderful watch and perfect for casual wear or dressier with a suit or smart casual use. All in all good watches. Thanks for posting your review.

    It's nice to hear someone review the 5KX without using it as an excuse to kick the cr4p out of it for not being an SKX. Sure, it isn't an SKX. It doesn't mean it's a bad watch.

    The only thing I don’t like about the new 5KX line is they think they threw us a bone with the upgraded movement, but took away the function of the dive watch and then charging %40 more for a lesser capable piece. It’s pretty insulting if you think about it too much.

    • @BruceWilliams

      They didn't make it for "us". They made it for "them". They made it for the mall shoppers who enjoy bright colors or the blacked out look. I was at kohl's the other and saw 4 of them in the case. Definitely caught my eye, which was Seiko's purpose of these new offerings.

People looking for a ‘real’ dive watch will realise Seiko now make better dive watches for the money. Originally, the SKX evolved directly from the 7002 series, which came from the 2nd gen. 6309 Turtle of the mid 80s. That design was sold alongside the original 1st gen. Turtle until its demise in 1988.

    I bought a Seiko Sea Urchin back in 2017. And meant to get qn SKX but assumed they'd always be around. No rush, missed it. I picked up a Brown 5KX 2 days ago. And I'm not gonna lie. It's a handsome comparable watch. There are downgrades and things we wish we had, but with inflation considered. It's still a fantastic budget watch. Grabbed mine for $189 on Amazon. To me that's a steal compared to the original $350 suggested price. Seiko 5's really are wonderful for what they strive for and exceed at the price point.

      I’ve got an SKX007 as well as a 4R36 Orange Monster, and there’s no real difference in winding the 4R36 for a few turns, or doin the ‘Seiko Shuffle’. If you feel self conscious, do it in the bathroom, or the car or something!
      I’m not a fan of the 5KX, it doesn’t offer enough for me to want to try one. My Orange Monster has got drilled lugs and the better movement, and cost a lot less too!
      Interestingly Bruce, Chrono24 reports that my SKX007K2 has increased in value by 87% over the last year. Not a $500 watch, but £242, which is impressive.

    The upgraded movement, hacking, winding, display case, build quality. All better on the new one. Should it be 200m....? Probably. But that would compete with their higher end divers then. So I can see why they did it.

  • @Lee_K_5555
    @Lee_K_5555 4 года назад +1

    I've always thought the magic of the SKX was in part the result of the 46 mm lug-to-lug length of the case. It fits really well on both smaller and larger wrists without appearing too large or too small, respectively. Add in the low price, the ISO certification, and an automatic movement that is known to run a decade or more without servicing, and you have the makings of a minor legend. I've owned both the 007 and the 009 (got the former on my wrist right now as I type this) and I much prefer the black dial variant. It has a inky quality to it, with very high contrast with the white Lumibrite indices and hands. Watch enthusiasts throw around the term "iconic" way too often, and I've never thought that it properly applied to the SXK. They are good value watches for the money, very versatile to be sure, but icons? I think that nomenclature is best reserved for more influential designs like the Tank, or the Fifty Fathoms, or the Reverso, or the Royal Oak. Still, it's a nifty little watch and it deserves to be highly regarded in the watch community.
    Good comparison video, Bruce. I think when all the fuss dies down about the lack of screw-down crown, the modding world is going to go nuts for these watches and we'll see endless and interesting variations. I also see the street price coming down on these 5KXes pretty rapidly to something close to the $200 level. And we'll all move on to the next outrage...

    While I have no problem with the 5KX I'm still partial to the SKX. I do love the drilled lugs, but am unmoved buy the movement change (hacking and hand winding are not that big a deal on the SKX). Being a belt and suspenders type guy the screw down crown is the issue with me. I'm sure the push/pull crown will be secure but that extra security does it for me.

    Seiko and Orient offers pretty good watches in the entry level category (for scuba or desc) diver watches. But now the new replacement Seiko is rated close to 300 or more (in my country are more expensive than the US prices) with the Orients to be a little cheaper something less than 300 euros. Both of them suffer from some smaller or bigger issues misaligned bezels cheap bracelets and straps etc.. So i wonder why should we bother, there are several micro brands that offer the same movement or better (eta's sw200's) with better cases and bracelets at the same price or better... I hoped that the new 5's would be free from issues... But i believe that Seiko drop the ball with the new line, when you raise the price you raise and the quality.

    • @BruceWilliams

      @@BruceWilliams Don't get me wrong i like Seiko my first watch was a Seiko 5 and is working 45 yrs after my father give it to me. And that's why i think that Seiko drop the ball. They do not pay attention to detail as they used, not to the entry level watches. Micro brands do pay attention to detail and they offer spectacular value for the price we pay. At least for the below 500 d entry level sport watches.

    I don't understand why everyone hates the seiko 5kx. The movement and bezel in the new watch are fare superior to the old watch. They gave customers the hacking and hand winding they were asking for. As someone who owns both watch, the new watch is far easier to live with. As long as you're not going diving the new watch is superior. If you are a diver, don't be cheap and buy a real dive watch. The seiko 5s are beaters that you pick up at macy's for under 200 dollars. Honestly I think the samurai, turtle, monster, are all far superior to the skx and the first two can be found on sale at roughly the same price point as the overpriced skx with 20 year old tech.

    Good review. There are too many others out there with knee-jerk negative reactions to the 5XK, underplaying very nice upgrade to a hacking/winding movement -- how many of those folks really 200m ISO certification for depth diving with their Seiko SXK? The one thing that I don't like are the new index markers on the dial -- I liked the the look of the SKX's painted-on markers better. I think the painted on indexes gave the dial a subtle but more distinctly Japanese character. If some charm goes missing with the 5KX, it's in that respect perhaps.

    New watches seem to be focused on the young, at least that's my perspective. I personally think the SKX has a more refined vibe and is better suited to a broader demographic and is in my view more wearable in a variety of situations. I would for example wear the SKX at home and work but not so sure about that black watch. To me looks more like a weekender or night out item. Of course others may have a different opinion.

      I want a total blacked out skx but they do this in a 5kx cheaper than modding, I also want to do a full white mod so a modded skx would probably be the best way to go.
      Regardless I think it depends on what you need from a watch, you can't deny the 5kx is a solid watch with a place in today's market.

    No screw-down crown = no buy

    • @Leec_1972
      @Leec_1972 4 года назад

      With those big crown guards having a screw down crown might even be superfluous ITO the possibility of the crown getting pulled out accidentally. The way the O-ring sits around the stem ensures the watch remains waterproof even if the crown is pulled out, the screw-down feature doesn't really contribute to the WR at all anyway.
      The case-back is most likely the feature that really limits the WR rating and could simply be changed for an SKX one but I wouldn't bother TBH. It would be interesting to see what the actual WR limit for this case is. I'd bet that just like the SKX it will be far far more than the stated rating of 100m.

    • @Robosan4000
      @Robosan4000 4 года назад

      The screw section in-and-of-itself doesn't provide the water resistance. Its the clamping force provided by the screw against an o-ring in the cap of the crown that provides the water resistance. Think of how a screw top bottle works. You don't get this with a regular push-pull crown. If you did, they wouldn't have invented and continued to use a screw down crown for 100 years.

    • @Leec_1972
      @Leec_1972 4 года назад

      @@Robosan4000 You're 100% right of course in terms of a conventional crown sealing system but did you know that the SKX series does not have an O-Ring seal in the crown? the O-Ring in the SKX is actually situated on the stem and seals against the case tube which is somewhat different to systems using an O-Ring inside the crown itself.
      Thus the SKX O-ring (and I guess bu extension this new derivative of it without the screw-down function) seals inside the case tube whether the crown is pushed in, pulled out or screwed in or out.
      I'd also hasten to add that the screw-down function is not intended to provide a clamping force it is meant to provide security against the crown being accidentally pulled out in a conventional crown system separating the crown seal from the case tube. (you are advised in most manuals to not screw the crown in too hard for fear of wrecking the seal).
      The watches the very first SCUBA pioneers like Cousteau etc started with watches that has 100 meters or less WR and no screw-down function. The drawback is less security not less WR. people will argue that screw-down watches have more WR however that's a function of the overall design and not one feature.
