I really like the direction they took this line. There is a style for everyone. The non screw down crown is a plus for me because screw down crowns are just annoying, 100M is enough for swimming and if you dive you use a proper dive computer.
The non screw down crown is the main reason why I bought the 5KX over the SKX. I can quickly and easily set the time while it's on my wrist, not that I have to do that very often as the one I have is just -2sec/day. I have other screw down crown watches including a Rolex Datejust, which is also only rated 100m. I also have a Swatch Irony Scuba 200 Aluminum rated 200m without a screw down crown. As a retired oceanographer I will say this: a properly designed and made O-ring seal is all that's needed for subsea as the greater the pressure the better the seal. The screw down crown is just good security so the crown does not get hooked in something and pulled out while under water. So, the long and the short of it is screw down crowns are highly over emphasized for 200m or even deeper water resistance.
Completely agree with your take. It's better suited for real world/everyday needs.

I see many people in airports chose the new 5kx instead of other brands on display. Seiko hit a commercial success. Also, they look reaaaaallly good, and are introducing new people to the great hobby of mechanical watches
Everyone hated the 7s26 without a hand wind. Now they gave us one with nearly same water resistance and better dial and movement and people are pieced. This dude has a gmt master wall clock. A watch that can fetch 40 thousand for absolutely no reason at all. Sub par movement . A dead dog imo. These channels only exist to sell you 'entry level luxury pieces 'they may showcase on their pages. Lol. Lts of it is trash . They won't tell you an aqua racer will tell better time than his gmt master. Or that a these 5kx along with the srp777 will be worth 500 600 dollars in 20 years. Laugh now clowns.
@Ron Sisk Hi Ron, when it comes to my 5kx date change, am I okay to change just the date without changing the day when it comes to less than 31 day months ie April this month being a 30 day rather than a 31 day month. It shouldn't misalign the day/date complication if I just need to change the date without changing the day as long as I don't do it between about 10pm and 4am, right? I appreciate your reply Ron, thanks!
I LOVE MY SEIKO 5! Why? 👇 1) bought it on sale at a mom and pop's watch store for $160 with the Seiko warranty. Perfect price for it! 2) Its not a dive watch. We all know that. Most of the people complaining that it should have been a diver don't even dive. I personally can't swim so I don't care. I'm fine with with 10 bar. 3) No screw down crown? Who cares! How many watches are out there without a screw down crown? 1000s!! Again, it's not a dive watch. 4) Great Seiko lum, chapter ring is aligned perfectly on mine, updated automatic movement, exhibition case back, no playback bezel, applied indices, hacking, 40hr reserve, day/date, 10 bar. Does its job. Can't compare that with a random "fashion" watch. 5) The bracelet isn't great? Most Seikos in this price range have sucky bracelets/straps. I bought the watch and immediately bought and swapped in a new strap at the same watch shop. 6) Hardlex crystal? Same as the SKX. So I bought a domed shappire at Islander Watches. Same as the SKX so it fits perfectly. 7) I agree that the SKX should have just been updated. People complained about the SKX as much as they do about the new Seiko 5. Different complaints. No hacking, hardlex crystal, chapter ring, etc., etc. That's why most people mod them. Well, you can mod Seiko 5s too. 8) Retail price? Yes I will agree it's too high. But if you can get it for sale like I did, I personally recommend it as a nice beater... unless you're Jacques Cousteau.
@@shanewright2772 Thanks for asking! I got the orange dial one. That was a personal choice. My dad had given me an orange dial Seiko 5 sports watch years ago and somehow I lost it. I've been wanting to replace it for years so when these came out I figured I'll check them out. So I got one for myself and my dad too ( he also collects watches). Got a nice water resistant Hadley Roma kevlar strap for both. All black with orange stiching. Looks perfect on it. Love it! I recommend seeing these watches in person. Makes a difference.
Finally a comment with some common sense; I don't mean to bash anyones taste or opinions. The SKX is as much a "fashion" watch as the 5KX. Seiko ditched the Diver rating because it was unecessary, instead focused on giving the watch a better finish. I don't see how that is a bad thing. The price is too high, yes, that I agree. This is a prime example of a great grey market bargain. The SKX is worst value as it's hard to find under 350$ dollars (CAD), and it's got a Jurassic-era movement, unaligned parts and painted pips. Seiko is also a big corporate business; naturally they will ride their brands popularity. Wait for sales; I got a cheap. SNK809 with their highway-robbery MSRP of $299 for 84$, official channels and all.
Agree with all your points. Everyone worrying about it not being a true dive seems a but silly. How many people honestly dive? I once accidentally got in the shower with my 50m WR orient watch, and didnt realize until 15 minutes when I got out. It didnt take on any water at all, and it isn't even a 100m like this Seiko 5, so people worrying about water exposure with this watch are being over cautious I believe. Even without a screw down, it still has a gasket that keeps water out. All in all a Divers spec watch is only desirable for the "mental note" that its a true diving abilities
Can't agree more. They don't even market it as a dive watch. It's marketed as a durable casual watch made for practicality. I didn't know most of these people lived under water
Question : Why are watch enthusiasts so pissed off about the new 5s and Seiko discontinuing the SKX if you all already have an SKX? Congratulations , your skx is now a collector's item and can be sold on for a premium.
They couldve easily made the best skx ever and kept it going for ever too my just changing the movement .Even with hardlex and no sapphire it would fly off the shelves .
I agree with you all the way! I feel this is a bad move for Seiko, the diehard Seiko fans & collectors will turn their backs & look elsewhere, there are still better watches for the same or less money out there.
95% of the time I agree with your reviews, but I think you are wrong in this one, Jodi. Let's take it from this angle - most people don't scuba dive. And for those who like to think that 200m WR just makes their watch that much sturdier - go and swim for 100m in a pool and imagine you are going deeper as you swim. You're just not ever going to need a watch with that level of WR. And that's where the only imaginable issue with this watch lies. Compare the actual watches - the SKX has a dull blue dial with painted markers, and a cheap-looking aluminium bezel insert - while the 5KX has a gorgeous sunburst dial with a nice matt insert - and an improved movement that has hacking and hand-winding. It's a solid, weighty, sturdy watch that just looks gorgeous. It's not meant to be an upgrade on the SKX, it's a different watch altogether.
Bought one last week and I really love it. Happened to enter a watch shop for fun, fell in love with it on the spot, basically. Own an skx013 too, and I think this is improved overall, despite the lack of a screw down crown.
Bought one today, the SRPD57K. Looks great and I'm happy with it. Yeah it doesn't have a screw down crown but at 10 bar water resistance it's not a dive watch and therefore no need for a screw down crown. It does hack and has a good movement. If you want a dive watch go ahead and buy a dive watch. If you want a great looking mechanical watch at an affordable price you can't go wrong here.
To be honest I never got my hands on an SKX, and if I couldn't bring myself to pay $250 for a divers certified watch that was universaly loved I certainly didn't feel compelled to spend $300 on a downgraded blinged out version of it.
Wow..... the insert actually lines up! For a watch that looks exactly like the SKX, comes with a much better movement than the SKX and has an insert that actually lines up perfectly when they can't even get a more expensive diver's insert to line up, it's a no brainer IMO even if it lacks a screw down crown. I'm getting myself one!! LOL
Correction: ESPECIALLY because it lacks a screwdown crown. That's not a feature for 99% of people that buy drive watches cause they won't ever be in a situation that need it. So it just becomes annoying to loosen that when you want to change anything
the blackout looks kool, but shoulda still stuck with the screw-down crown. I mean it’s still 300$ for less features. they keep the price the same yet keep making the chocolate bar smaller. I guess this is what separates the watch guys from the guys with a watch
I think the Seiko 5 is a great gate way watch into watch collecting & watch nerdom. Many years ago I started with a Seiko 5, got the bug, started nerding out, and then progressed to buying more complicated mechanical watches. I'm glad I didn't jump straight into a Rolex purchase because I now know and appreciate so much more all the cool details and all the brands of watches.
I like em, I think they'll do well to rope more enthusiasts into our hobby, great starter watch for newbies I think, the range of styles means there's one for everyone
no fam, there 300 dollars for a lookalike of a real watch...... these watches should be 100 dollars if it aint iso certified, and only 30 meters of water resistant..... no fam..... dont forget, for 300 dollars you can get either a sumo, samuarai, or turtle...... way better watches for the money...... or a really quirky watch, the seiko monster series used to be only 200 dollars.....that was value for money back in the day, seiko monsters
@@michielroskam3877 Realistically the 100m water resistance is fine for any average consumer, my SARY055 has 100m and no screw down crown, been in and out of the pool/shower/beach with no issue hundreds of times at this point, I do see however why if you had the extra cash a Samurai might suit you better
Don’t think it’s that bad. Recently held one at a store and it felt really solid! The bezel action was waaaay better then my skx! Easier to grip and stuff too. If you like the color and don’t care about water resistance, go for it!
To be honest Seikos catalouge for divers is filled enough for everyone who is now pissed, that the 5kx aren't 20 bar anymore. I think Seiko kinda gave us an updated version of the SKX with the Mini-Turtle which is better in every aspect to the skx
Have both, heimdallr standards have really dropped. Had the 5kx first but bought my heimdallr later to learn modding but as i didn't have the heart to risk screwing up on a good piece. Turns out the heimdallr is no longer compatible with any seiko parts. My blue skx double domed sapphire coin edge bezel and faded inserts are useless now.. The new heimdallr crystal size is 32mm if you wanna know
This particular one was my first automatic watch and first seiko and I absolutely love it, sapphire and a screw down crown would be great but at least I've got somewhere to go with my collecting.
Me too! Got a "used" SRPD81K1 in mint condition for under 200 from "Amazon Warehouse Deals". Had to buy it because of the colours. Put a nice black rubber strap on it. Never left my wrist since then. Definitely worth the money, love it!
@@Arractic It's accurate to about + - 4 seconds per day most days, and no I've used it in the rain, on construction sites, on construction sites IN THE RAIN (pacific northwest), in the shower, camping, etc. It's been more than water resistant to all my needs.
Seiko didn't downgrade anything and the new Seiko 5's aren't "ex-" anything. The "5" after "Seiko" should be a dead giveaway that they are not new SKX's. Seiko 5 has never been an ISO dive watch, that I'm aware of and the SKX was never a Seiko 5. Seiko 5 has copied features of their up-line watches in the past and that is what they are doing here. And doing a pretty good job of it, too. The new SRPD's wear like the SKX but give the practical benefits of a modern movement, myriad aesthetic choices and drilled lugs. They can be had for under $200usd and that's an attractive price point which will be even more common going forward. Outside of a relative handful of enthusiasts, the new Seiko 5 is a good option for people who don't want to spend $250+ for the privilege of owning a similar watch with an obsolete movement.
@@bmassche If it's there, it's probably on the sticker on the outer box. The tag on my Seiko 5s don't even say Seiko 5. Regardless, are you suggesting the SKX007/009/013 are Seiko 5s? If so, you might be correct, but I've never, ever heard of them referred to as such.
Nah i work as a tour guide in a tropical island. And used to dive a lot. I own SKX007, Ray II & Kamasu all do very well especially orient with their hacking movement & sapphire crystal (kamasu). Looking at this new 5KX more like a fashion dress watch than a tool watch.
@@wans5885 You want an indestructible watch? Get a G-Shock. 300 feet of water resistance is perfectly fine, and very much exceeds 99% of people who use these watches. It's better than an SKX in every other way, so why complain about something so meaningless?
@John Buckmaster That is a great question John, I think yes, as an hommage is made to honor the original design (or imitate) but even if the hommage is much better than the original it is still the imitation version.
Having no emotional connection to the SKX007 (and wearing a Turtle as I type) I don't really get the outrage. They're 5 Sports watches, with according specs, and from what I've heard from ADs, they're selling quite well. Perhaps in the coming years they'll even try varying the dial and bezel designs!
People think this is an skx replacement. It's not. If you want a dive watch you buy a dive watch. As you pointed out this is a Seiko 5 sport watch. I have one and think it looks great. And really all these people complaining about water resistance and screwed down crowns have probably never gone scuba diving. I own a dive watch and guess what. It's never been diving.
I think my approach was the best compromise. I bought an SKX007, and replaced the movement with an NH36 with black day and date wheels. I added a ceramic bezel and domed sapphire crystal, and ended up with the watch Seiko should have made in the first place.
Respect for the 5KX for calling me out on the fact that I am never REALLY going diving. Main complaint is is the minute hand: why does it suddenly narrow. The lettering for "Automatic" also doesn't seem serious enough. Finally why is the lume pip on the seconds on the wrong end??
Seiko is anything but confused. It's sad for enthusiasts, but they seem to have discovered marketing at Seiko HQ... More changes (price increases) ahead.
Sadly I think Seiko will do the same with their sister brand Orient & mess everything up. This latest Seiko trend has turned me off, I'm now looking at other better alternatives. Seiko SK5! I won't be waisting my money, not even at £150, I'd prefer spending my money on an Invicta Pro Diver, better watch for less money in my opinion. I own the SKX 007 & the Seiko 5s don't come close.
I pay 215 dollars in Amazon and I think this 5SK it’s perfect for me a Not diver who like diver design; you have the best of that desing without the heavy weight, the big buckle, etc. Since is cheap I’m planning to use it as a beater watch for bicycle rides, hikes and so on. Conclusion I like it 😎👍🏼
I bought one for Christmas. The all green “hulk”. Honestly ? It’s just as good as the SKX, if not better. I don’t use this watch as a diver, so I dint care about the 100m difference. They are better looking with a better movement. Who honestly needs 200m of WR these days. I love my 5kx
I.D. Kline , Because I like the look? And the dive time bezel is useful for other things... not just diving. I’m sure 99% of people who buy dive watches don’t dive with them. So there. Answer your silly question?
Got a SRPD51K2 (blue dial on blue nato strap) as my first Seiko. Couldn't live without hacking and hand winding. I am wearing it for a week already and pretty happy with the little thing.
I bought a 5kx and love it on the silver bracelet. I love this watch. Easy to set the time and better more accurate movement than the skx. Changing straps is easier too. If you are not a diver, then it is the better watch.
Basic scuba certification is done at about 9-18m, going below 18m is often considered "going deep", the majority of marine species exist above 18m. Nitrogen narcosis becomes an issue at 30 meters, hypoxic breathing gas is required below 60 meters. If you are going to routinely go below 100m, you are likely going to invest in state-of-the-art not dying instruments, especially a dive computer, that help you navigate your ascent so the gases don't boil your blood. The 5 is fine for most normal shallow recreational scuba, snorkling, and just wearing daily. I bought one because my phone kept malfunctioning in the west Texas heat and I needed something to collect times on soil samples; they don't have to be super accurate, just consecutive.
I never bought an SKX because of the movement. I bought one of these and I'm very pleased with it but then again I don't dive. Marc at LIW has a video showing that most of the aftermarket parts for the SKX, including the crystal, fit perfectly on this new offering.
I've watched a lot of different watch videos recently, and I don't understand why people care about the diving aspect of watches, who is taking expensive ass watches in the ocean, I'm sure they make a cheap specific diving timepeice instead of taking down your 10k dollar rolex lol
I like how it’s cool to wear an over-engineered diver “to the office” but it’s a shame normal people who choose the 5KX for how _they_ look are getting ripped off. The implication of value (or not) is not merely hilarious, but more than a little hurtful to the hobby.
Agreed it's thinner than the Turtle and the Samurai, which in my honest opinion makes it a better desk diver. Meaning that as a desk diver I'm not going to take it scuba diving in sea water now am I? I'll wait for one of them to hit 150 US. And they have for some models, in my corner of the World.
I got a srpd91 and personally glad I did I love it, just got some nice natos but it was my first auto and my first non fashion watch so i love the thing.
I think some watch enthusiasts are taking this release too hardly. I don't particularly care for it. O think that, on balance, it's an improvement over the SKX and will do better for Seiko than the SKX would have, had nothing changed. The compromises made sense. What was given up ultimately weren't valuable to the mass market, and what was gained is far more practical.
Personally. Im new to the watch game. I find the new 5KX fine, Im still saving for one. I dont find them inferior at all. They are just catering the a different. Its just different times.
I was in the latter camp thinking how dare Seiko replace the beloved Skx with this! But I think I was looking at it the wrong way around it's not an skx replacement but a Seiko 5 upgrade. That's the way I see it now. So yes I did buy one and it arrived yesterday Wed 12th Feb. And and I love it I got the sports sunburst green the SRPD63K1. I did not pay anything like the mrrp.No it's not an skx it's a seiko 5 and I have not heard a word of complaint about the old seiko 5 being deleted. Great Vid .
Actually I like it, as a diver I rarely went below 30 to 40 meters anyway. It's a great travel watch as it won't break your heart if it gets stolen and can be worn in a bus or jeepney without making you a target and it still looks good. I got the SRPG47K with white dial and quite happy with it for the price.
G'day Jody. I brought the SRPD79K, I just love the all black. Due to your Videos, I had already gotten a SKX009K and a SKX007J, so I didn't need a dive watch. I do love the look of it. Due to the addiction of watching your videos, I too have become 'Just One More Watch', I also have collection of Casio watches that I love.
Are people who consider the new Seiko 5's to be the "new" SKX/ the (ridiculously nicknamed) "5KX" just setting themselves up for disappointment? The new line of Seiko 5's are just that - the new line of Seiko 5's. … and nothing else. Furthermore, they are a spectacular evolution of the Seiko 5 line!
I'm with you on this one Jody. I welcome the improved movement and the applied indices but not at the cost of the dive credentials. It's as if Seiko have seen the SKX modding scene and tried to take it out of our hands! Surely they could have kept the SKX but with the afore mentioned upgrades and even offered some different dial/strap options.
@@oldfashionedsportsmanchave4590 Maybe you could, just maybe, explain what you mean instead of relying on our mind reading abilities. You're still wrong though, no $100 watch can compete with the standard SKX. None.
I bought the Pepsi for 215€ on sale and am quite happy with it. Not as expensive as the SKX at that point, new movement, nice lume, and overall good look and feel to it. Maybe not liked by everybody, but I think it's great. Especially with the new Superman-like S, or rather 5, on it. Have a good one!
I loved it coz of all of these reasons! never seen a Seiko with this much coverage apart form the skx 🤣 worth talking about just for being so hated but being so unobjectionable looking. The one I got had no alignment defects and cost 220 usd
Very late to this party but I just bought the exact same model in the video for $220 aud on a father's day special. Never owned a SKX but I appreciated the look so I'm happy with the purchase at that price
Heeellooooooooooooouuuu!! Hi I’ve got one of the Macys Black Friday deals in nato....I embraced it very well...and still rejecting it as well....🤔🤔🤔...so now I’m confused. 🤗
I got this from an AD in Downtown Miami for less then 200 usd as a birthday gift from my wife back in 2020. It was my first automatic and opened the food gate to the more expensive ones, and a plethora of bought and sold watches. The one big deception was the spring bar on the clasp did not hold while I tried to save a falling box. I`ve put it on a G10 Perlon nato and I love it. The comfort and weight went significantly down and it made it way more playful. So I love it, but it`s not a blind love. I see the flaws, still I will keep it forever.
I got the ”sea urchin”. Really like black and applied indices. Always looked at the SKX. Was not a fan of the painted indices but liked the case and crown position. Don’t really care about water resistance, if it can handle a quick splash I’m good. Hence I jumped on the SRPD55 and I am thruly enjoyning it. Ticks the boxes for me.
I've just picked up a burgundy Oriënt Kamasu for €219.- the other week and I couldn't be happier. I'm afraid that the Seiko 5KX will become the flop of the decade since I have yet to find one single watch enthusiast within my circle who actually likes this downgraded (ex)diver. I can't get my head around why they didn't just upgraded the SKX with a 4R36 and a sapphire crystal.
@@poulwinther The King Turtle is a good alternative (albeit limited to 3 variants only, at least the ones I saw). It has Sapphire, ceramic bezel and 4R36 and still has the screw-down with 200M WR.
@@mark1nyc Thanks - except for some small details: $600!!! Still only the pip lumed. 45mm!!! No mod parts! There's just an endless string of divers I'd rather throw 600 after.
@@poulwinther yeah im waiting for it to cool off. Idk but Seiko pricing has gone up recently. For 600 it should have the very least 6R15 or (6R35 w/c will never happen😂) They are made in japan so thats prob why price is that much.
@@dibtojyoti10 Fair enough and time will tell. I have no problems with the launch of this new Seiko 5 line if it was an addition to the existing range of watches and not passed off as a replacement for the SKX. It's like Rolex discontinuing the Submariner and replacing it for a 100 m. diver without a screw down crown, with about the same price tag.
I have the SRPD93 and love it. I'm not a diver, so 100 meters of water resistance is more than enough for what I use a watch for. The lume is fantastic, and the silicone strap is very comfortable. While not all the colour variants appeal to me, I think Seiko did a great job by giving us options.
my thoughts on these have always been: drilled lugs finally, 4R finally, lots of options finally! but: rebranded as a sports/fashion watch and no longer a diver? booooo
I appreciate all the knowledge that you bring to the watch community. Because of you I have made many informed decisions. Please keep up the good work.
I have the Islander and there are a few things about it that leave much to be desired. I had to return the first one I received. The bezel could be turned both ways and was very sticky on both watches I received. The first one had a movement that randomly stopped. The second one had minute and seconds hands that had a lot of play in them. It really makes me question the quality of assembly. The chapter ring and indices are also a bit off on the second watch. The main reason I kept the second one was because it ran accurately out of the box. Bottom line, I went for the islander because of turnaround time, the fully lumed bezel, and the availability of SKX009 colours. If I didn't care about how long the Heimdallr would take to clear customs and liked their choice of colours better, I would have gone with them instead.
I am not sure why there is so much fuss regarding the 100m rating and a screw down crown on this sports watch. I am a PADI open water diver and my maximum allowable dive depth is 18m. When I dive I use my Dive Computer and a Ball Hydrocarbon Engineer NEDU which is rated to 600m. I have recently purchased a SRPD 63K, not for diving but as a watch enthusiasts I think that it is a beautiful looking sports watch. It is an everyday watch for me to wear, so no need for a screw down crown and anything more than 100m.if you want to dive with a reasonably priced Dive watch then maybe you should be considering a Seiko PADI or a Citizen aqualand.
I couldn’t agree with you more! I don’t get this watch! The Brain May special edition especially! Brian May wears a Seiko 7584 and has apparently for the last 40 years or so. You’d think if a living legend wears your watch for 40 years you’d do something special! Really special, I don’t know, off the top of my head a skx style case with a 7c46 movement...
Nice review as always, and as usual it's down to whatever rocks your boxers. Maybe given time people will accept this Seiko variant, and if it makes them happy then all is good. 👍 Tam.
Seriously, if I need a watch for diving I'd go for my baby Tuna, Samurai or G-Shock, but i don't dive. I just love watches, and i set them to NIST time when I put them on in the morning while I drink my coffee, with an skx that could never be done due to lack of hacking, so I never bought one. However I just bought a 5kx
Believe it or not, it's important to some of us that a DIVE WATCH has diving capability. Sure, I haven't used my PADI license in close to a decade, but when I do go on my next dive I want to know that my watch is rated for it haha
Great review! You did the right thing to reject it. I have been pushed away from this collection the moment I saw the specs!!!! Can’t beat my SKX in any means!!!
I was 50/50 recently with the sbdc061 and the ocean crawler core diver, I went with the ocean crawler, it might just have been the best watch I have worn in 20 years and its individually tested and regulated.
I'm guessing it'll be the same as the new Timex M79, looks like something you probably want, but when you look into it a bit more you lose interest based on a spec sheet, especially if you're into divers. Not sure if anyone who's previously owned a SKX will go for one, but no doubt they'll sell being a classic looking Seiko.
I think you hit it spot on, I think this watch is for the people who value the looks, I bought the SRPD61K1 here in manila for around 223usd (11,400php) I love it, it goes well for a lot of casual looks :)
I personally like the 5kx's a lot. I bought a used one in like new condition for $165 USD. I thought at that price, why not give it a try? I'm really happy with it. The movement is infinitely better than my SKX. I love the fact that it doesn't have a screw down crown. It can easily be wound by just, well, winding it -- no crown to unscrew first. I never had a need to dive 200 meters with my SKX, so the fact that I can't do it with the 5KX doesn't bother me in the least. Overall, I think Seiko did a great job with these.
I like to take it for what it is, you know? These are watches that you can walk into any Seiko authorized dealer and find, and they look cool, and people like them. Then you can talk to that person and go "hey you like that? What about this?" And then show them something even better like a Kamasu
I bought one during Christmas with a sale and an additional 30% off coupon I picked up one for $175 USD. I like it. Although I do understand the non screw down crown being an issue. I just started collecting watches in 2019, so the SKX had already started to be disconnected.
Yep. I'm with you on this one. It's a step up from a Chinese copy, really. Not a watch for a collector, but maybe a first automatic watch for a teenage son or daughter...
I've gone for the Islander#01, baught an original prosplex dial for $30 (the blue to black dial, goes well with black chapter ring and black ceramic bezel), replaced the Islander dial.... stunning watch. And the included strapcode super O is just what we all want. The Islander vanilla is already a beauty tho.
I bought one around the same time as you (small chance you may remember). Paid $300, wore it once and sold it at a loss at $250. It's good, but it's lost a bit of that SKX charm. Its bad when the watch loses out to a $17 Casio f91w for a spot in my collection.
Hey Jody, highly disheartened to read your video thumb nail. Just last month I have bought two of them. One blue and black one, I was very impressed with them. BTW I never owned SKX.
I bought this mainly because it looks lovely, but the bezel is an incredibly useful tool for timing when i’m cooking and i have stuff on my hands and therefore cannot touch my phone. Even with dough covering my hands, i can use the bezel
as someone who was neither here nor there about the SKX I can honestly say I came at this one with a totally open mind (sort of) and my verdict is that I'm neither here nor there about the 5KX. they say the opposite of love isn't hate, it's indifference so make of that what you will...…. if you can be arsed, it's not all that important.
Minority opinion: Happy to sacrifice a screw down crown and iso dive cert. for a dramatically improved watch face with no "Sports" and applied markers, great color choices and hacking and hand-winding. I am probably the only one but I vastly prefer this one to the old. Would make those trade off all day every day and twice on Sundays. 10bar is enough for me. & the rotor action on these cheap Seikos are such that the lack of hand-winding is a HUGE bummer to me. My Seiko SNZH53J1 drives me bonkers. I could wear it 12 hours a day and still some days I wake up and it dead. That's significant dial and movement upgrade for a little water resistance most of us will never use. I am more than okay with that.
It might be a minority opinion but it's also one of the most rational ones that I've read about both watches, on social media. I agree with every word of it.
Exactly! The SKX had honestly been falling short of the Orient divers for a few years anyway in terms of bang for buck. The lack of hacking and hand winding was just inexcusable, even at the SKX price point. Also, the watch enthusiast is not the target market for the 5 sport. It is the early 20 something who is looking for something trendy and fashionable and not a timeless piece. However, the Seiko 5 Sport will serve as an introduction to horology for those consumers, which is a good thing for the future of the watch market. Yes it sucks that the SKX isn’t available anymore, but Seiko still makes some great watches at slightly more of a premium price. I think we will eventually see the SKX come back, it’s too iconic and timeless to be gone for long, but when we do see it again we all should be ready to pay more.
Always wanted an SKX007 -- didn't pull the trigger then they announced it being discontinued and the prices went silly (for a watch sold in millions of units). I watched the 5KX review and at the time thought... nope... I want a real certified diver for AUD $499+ shipping Roll forward all that time plus 9 months of ISO in Melbourne and it occurred to me: 1. I'm not a diver, I just like dive style watches 2. I haven't been able to swim for 9+ months! 3. I think hand winding, hacking and drilled lugs are all more useful to me than a watch I can wear scuba diving (which I've never done) 4. It's Black Friday, so I'll check if the 5KX is being discounted now One quick search and watchdirect.com.au had them at $329 less a 15% Black Friday discount, making the watch $279... at that price (less than half what SKX007 is going for right now) I couldn't resist. I bought the black dial with bracelet (SRPD55) compared with the SKX It has a superior movement with hacking/ hand winding, applied indices, and drilled lugs for simple strap changes, and comes with solid end links/ superior bracelet. It will also put up with all the punishment I will ever give it in the water. Not one for the purists and I'd still love an SKX (I already have a modded 150M rated 7002), but I think I'll be very happy with this as mechanical desk diver/ swimmer for $279. If anyone reads this today, Starbuy have them for Cyber Monday at $275... I think they should always be
My favourite part about my hulk green 5KX is how it repels watch snobs with a 100% accuracy rate. Snob resistance > water resistance
Great comment. Watch snob resistance ratings should be on the dial of all watches. Except quartz watches. They just get the Infinity symbol.
I have a Vostok Amphibia just for that purpose.
LOL
@@varanid9 I have a komandirske to repel everyone
@@joem5140 I so want to get an oysterquartz just to annoy rolex fanboys, lmao
I really like the direction they took this line. There is a style for everyone. The non screw down crown is a plus for me because screw down crowns are just annoying, 100M is enough for swimming and if you dive you use a proper dive computer.
I think they'd stand up to most divers needs. I used to dive with a 50m Casio and did get it down to 50m at least twice with no issues.
I think it's the main point of this watch, with the easy winding movement and display caseback.
Why? 👇
1) bought it on sale at a mom and pop's watch store for $160 with the Seiko warranty.
What colour did you get?
David Wilson as a society being angry at something draws us together
Yes and that means if you want an skx you’ll also pay a premium because scalpers will milk every opportunity for a quick flip.
Been asking myself this the two years I've owned an 5KX. No watch is perfect but I really like the look and feel of it and I wear it 75% of the time.
They couldve easily made the best skx ever and kept it going for ever too my just changing the movement .Even with hardlex and no sapphire it would fly off the shelves .
Indeed. But they didn't. 😭
@@JustOneMoreWatch Nope that would've been way too easy and this is Seiko after all lol
They should've just made it the cheapest watch in the Prospex line, instead of the MOST expensive Seiko 5 ever.
They did, lol :) 5 is better then skx
100% It isn't in the top 5 Seiko 'dive style' watches under $400.
“Guys who wears 2-3-4-500m dive rated watches to the office” LOL 😂 that’s most of us watching this 🖖🏼
I have a Tudor Pelagos a dive watch, with a helium release valve. It has never touched water and never will.
It has been raining pretty hard though.....sooo 😂😂
Just in case the water cooler breaks and I get 5 gallons of water on my hand holding the cup... you never know.
I know folks who wear dive watches who can't swim.
Eastern Cowboy I know people who buy pilot watches and their only flying high experience is when they smoke weed.
Wow..... the insert actually lines up!
I don't get the complaints. The watch is gorgeous and barely anyone dives. If someone needs a watch for diving there are plenty of other options.
the blackout looks kool, but shoulda still stuck with the screw-down crown.

Marc at LIW said in a video the 5s are selling well , maybe , like you say new watch folk in the making as an introduction to mechanical watches.
How is this supposed to be the replacement of the SKX if it doesn't have a screw down crown? That's fkn ludicrous
I'm looking forward to the comparison between Heimdallr's Chinese homage and this Chinese homage...
David Holland I think we can guess which one might win!
The new heimdallr crystal size is 32mm if you wanna know
@@davechuasoup didnt know that! Thanks for warning
I love my Heimdallr bronze 62MAS. I was thinking I would mod it but no real reason to. At lease it has a screw down crown.

Holy smokes that is a nice watch! I really love the color you chose. The applied indices really make it look like a way more expensive watch.
"No back-play no bounce on it", says Jody, discreetly turning the bezel 3 cm backwards.😜
Might need to check the size of 3mm 😉 I think a tiny amount of backplay within the bounds of 120th of the circle is fairly acceptable anyway.
I bought one in December and really love it.
Me too! Got a "used" SRPD81K1 in mint condition for under 200 from "Amazon Warehouse Deals". Had to buy it because of the colours. Put a nice black rubber strap on it. Never left my wrist since then. Definitely worth the money, love it!

I would rather buy an Islander or any kind of SKX hommage than that new 5KX, definitely made for brick and mortar shops
Islander all the way
@John Buckmaster That is a great question John, I think yes, as an hommage is made to honor the original design (or imitate) but even if the hommage is much better than the original it is still the imitation version.
A deep blue is better value as well.
Islander is horrible stop being a fanboy.
Islander is nice ,but no ISO rating,so no thanks
Deep blue are ISO rated and offer the same specs
Having no emotional connection to the SKX007 (and wearing a Turtle as I type) I don't really get the outrage. They're 5 Sports watches, with according specs, and from what I've heard from ADs, they're selling quite well.
Perhaps in the coming years they'll even try varying the dial and bezel designs!
people mostly hate the retail price of 300. however most shops are selling them at 200 USD range at which these are fine
Kind of wish I could still find an SKX at a reasonable enough price to do the same thing. I can swap a movement in about 20 minutes.
Seiko's decision 5ucks. 😡

If the SKX was a “strap monster” than the 5KX is a mod monster. Less money spent on the watch means more money can be spent on the mod.
Respect for the 5KX for calling me out on the fact that I am never REALLY going diving. Main complaint is is the minute hand: why does it suddenly narrow. The lettering for "Automatic" also doesn't seem serious enough. Finally why is the lume pip on the seconds on the wrong end??
REJECTED!! Seiko is confused. Orient and Citizen aren’t!
I bought one for Christmas. The all green “hulk”. Honestly ? It’s just as good as the SKX, if not better. I don’t use this watch as a diver, so I dint care about the 100m difference. They are better looking with a better movement. Who honestly needs 200m of WR these days.

William Couch - quite right!

Got a SRPD51K2 (blue dial on blue nato strap) as my first Seiko. Couldn't live without hacking and hand winding. I am wearing it for a week already and pretty happy with the little thing.
The five logo looks hella cool compared to the prospex x
Now that is how to make a valid comment!
I never bought an SKX because of the movement. I bought one of these and I'm very pleased with it but then again I don't dive. Marc at LIW has a video
showing that most of the aftermarket parts for the SKX, including the crystal, fit perfectly on this new offering.
I've watched a lot of different watch videos recently, and I don't understand why people care about the diving aspect of watches, who is taking expensive ass watches in the ocean, I'm sure they make a cheap specific diving timepeice instead of taking down your 10k dollar rolex lol
The Seiko 5 Sports “Street Style” Blackout Ref. SBSA025 looks amazing. Probably the only model I'd pick up.
Finally someone who isn't a dumbass.
Even the skx sucks but you can't say it loud 🤫😂
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhh! We all kinda loved it anyway though. Cheers mate!
@@JustOneMoreWatch You're in the ny00xx camp though lad. You can say it 😌
It didnt suck. But it was always a $100 watch.
@@oldfashionedsportsmanchave4590 "But it was always a $100 watch."
That's just not true, the SKX used to be as expensive as the SK5 is now.
I'm w/ you, Seiko really screwed up w/ this move.
I think they know what they are doing. It means we will all end up paying more for Prospex!
@@JustOneMoreWatch Still have my SKX Pepsi on the Jubilee and a SARX055 so I'm good on Seiko front.
@@JustOneMoreWatch it'll stay in the display case then!
I love the small details though - like the chapter ring being a bit off on your watch. If that's not an SKX then I don't know what is!
Helloooooooo Jody, Seiko SKX is Iconic, the new one Meh!
I can't get my head around why they didn't just upgraded the SKX with a 4R36 and a sapphire crystal.
.....and a ceramic insert.
For 600 it should have the very least 6R15 or (6R35 w/c will never happen😂)
They are made in japan so thats prob why price is that much.
Review the islander watch! It's long island's watch store interpretation of an skx successor, a bargain too at 300 dollars.
Agreed. I have 2 of them already (Pepsi and white dial with blue sapphire bezel). It's the modern SKX that never was.
But is it worth double that of a Heimdallr? I have the islander (as per my profile photo) but if I'd known of the Heimdallr first...
Heimdallr bro......
Heimdallr is the shiz
👍 Tam.
But on the other side of the coin, how many of those that are complaining are actually using it as a "dive watch"?
Seriously, if I need a watch for diving I'd go for my baby Tuna, Samurai or G-Shock, but i don't dive. I just love watches, and i set them to NIST time when I put them on in the morning while I drink my coffee, with an skx that could never be done due to lack of hacking, so I never bought one. However I just bought a 5kx
Believe it or not, it's important to some of us that a DIVE WATCH has diving capability. Sure, I haven't used my PADI license in close to a decade, but when I do go on my next dive I want to know that my watch is rated for it haha
100% fallacious point
I've got the Suits Style - Olive Green and I like it. Try the "Islander" from Long Island Watch ... everything the SKX should of/could of been.
It's a downgraded upgrade. lol
Oh come on, they’ve upgraded $29 movement with $30 movement, that’s a heck of an upgrade.
@@vwlukas LMAO
People crying about a missing screw down crown for the 200m they will never use. Lol
Great review! You did the right thing to reject it. I have been pushed away from this collection the moment I saw the specs!!!! Can’t beat my SKX in any means!!!
Except in movement , dial and colour choice.....
Higher end Prospex is still where the bargains are. Sub 1K for the SBDC061 and SBDC051 are great divers
I was 50/50 recently with the sbdc061 and the ocean crawler core diver, I went with the ocean crawler, it might just have been the best watch I have worn in 20 years and its individually tested and regulated.
Anthony Smithyman Glad you’re happy with your purchase, mate!
A lot of competition at that price point
What a fresh trim my guy. Great review.
I own two SKXs and recently bought the 5KX sports Pepsi - and I much prefer it.
I think you hit it spot on, I think this watch is for the people who value the looks, I bought the SRPD61K1 here in manila for around 223usd (11,400php) I love it, it goes well for a lot of casual looks :)
I paid the same price in Cebu City.
* discontinued
Yep. I'm with you on this one. It's a step up from a Chinese copy, really. Not a watch for a collector, but maybe a first automatic watch for a teenage son or daughter...
At this point, just got to go for an Islander.
not everybody is from murica, shipping will kill us
@@michielroskam3877 The Heimllr Sharkey is another copy that'salso moddable with skx parts and much cheaper
I've gone for the Islander#01, baught an original prosplex dial for $30 (the blue to black dial, goes well with black chapter ring and black ceramic bezel), replaced the Islander dial.... stunning watch. And the included strapcode super O is just what we all want.

Glad to see your channel doing so well. Your reviews are always excellent.
I bought one around the same time as you (small chance you may remember). Paid $300, wore it once and sold it at a loss at $250.
It's good, but it's lost a bit of that SKX charm. Its bad when the watch loses out to a $17 Casio f91w for a spot in my collection.
Yes mate, I can't see the charm. Maybe one of those mesh ones, but they are even more money, so even less worthwhile. Cheers mate!
You're not a very good salesman.
Great attractive tough option. 4R36 movt is underated awesome.
Hey Jody, highly disheartened to read your video thumb nail. Just last month I have bought two of them. One blue and black one, I was very impressed with them. BTW I never owned SKX.
How has your experience been so far? Many purists demand too much from some watches.
I bought this mainly because it looks lovely, but the bezel is an incredibly useful tool for timing when i’m cooking and i have stuff on my hands and therefore cannot touch my phone. Even with dough covering my hands, i can use the bezel
An upgraded SKX certified 200m diver with a 4R36 movement & a sapphire crystal.
WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN SO DAMN HARD ABOUT THAT, SEIKO???
I love mine. I got the green dial and green bezel with gold hands and indeses. Its gorgeous and so far works wonerfully.
5KX is a hard no from me. I'll gladly give up hacking and hand winding for ISO certification.
as someone who was neither here nor there about the SKX I can honestly say I came at this one with a totally open mind (sort of) and my verdict is that I'm neither here nor there about the 5KX. they say the opposite of love isn't hate, it's indifference so make of that what you will...…. if you can be arsed, it's not all that important.
The Devil mixes his improvements with cut corners. Get thee behind me, Seiko!
Stop being so sensible 🤣 agree with all you say 👍
The Orients are looking like the future of cheap divers
Value not cheap.. my Blue Ray 2 is a watch I will wear to death, then immediately buy another. It’s a great beater that’s far too good to be a beater.
Always wanted an SKX007 -- didn't pull the trigger then they announced it being discontinued and the prices went silly (for a watch sold in millions of units). I watched the 5KX review and at the time thought... nope... I want a real certified diver for AUD $499+ shipping
Roll forward all that time plus 9 months of ISO in Melbourne and it occurred to me:
1. I'm not a diver, I just like dive style watches
2. I haven't been able to swim for 9+ months!
3. I think hand winding, hacking and drilled lugs are all more useful to me than a watch I can wear scuba diving (which I've never done)
4. It's Black Friday, so I'll check if the 5KX is being discounted now
One quick search and watchdirect.com.au had them at $329 less a 15% Black Friday discount, making the watch $279... at that price (less than half what SKX007 is going for right now) I couldn't resist.
