Do you agree with my assessment? Not only are they going to sell a bucket load of these, but the movement is going to be in EVERYTHING, literally everything, assuming they pump them out of the Malaysian factory fast enough. The price is optimistic, but I actually really like the bezel insert and the jubilee. Now, roll on the Helm Vanuatu Titanium GMT..... Cheers, Jody

Go for the flat sapphire, Jody. That's where I think 90% of modders go wrong. Double-domed doesn't suit the profile of the skx and family, and it just makes the watch even thicker.
You can thank me later 🙏😉

      That's an astute comment.

I *love* a box domed crystal. But it is a particular style option not suited to many of this eras chunky case designs.

@@JustOneMoreWatch Still. Those will exist solely because people bought those Seiko.
I don’t understand the criticism on specs either. Seiko has taken the risks and has developed the movement, it just makes sense that they are going to charge more than a random micro brand that will just buy and case a NH34. R&D costs money.
And the great thing is with those SKX/SSK/SRPD we know we have plenty of mod parts to improve the watch ! Overall I think we should all thank Seiko because if it wasn’t for them and Citizen literally 90% of the micro brands wouldn’t exist !

Totally agree. Its Seiko. The heritage and history. Of course a micro-band or a chinese company can produce it a cheaper price with greater specs, but the feeling is totally different for me if you wear a Seiko as oppose to a lesser-known brand. Also, essentially its a Seiko 5, so i dont understand why people complain that it needs a sapphire, milled clasp etc.. because none of their Seiko 5 lineups have sapphires. Its different if its a Prospex line and you are paying at premium prices yet no sapphire. This is truly a great watch with an affordable GMT workhorse. Im getting +2 seconds/day with my Seiko 5 GMT. Loving it. Even if there is a microband using the same 4R34 movement next year, i would still love my Seiko 5 GMT because I simply just love it. So haters just deal with it. Haha

I myself think that the reason why seiko only has hardlex crystals on their watches is that they know that a sapphire crystal will shatter if it gets a big impact against a hard object. The hardlex crystal is a lot more durable than a sapphire one and could end up with scratches and not much else. However having said all that if the Chinese microbrand companies can supply us with sapphire crystals on their watches then why can't seiko?.

Good after market jubilee bracelets are not easy to find.
I currently wear my Champagne Alpinist (SPB123J) on a jubie from Parnis, not because it is good and not because it is cheap. But because its 'okay'; at ~ 3.2mm depth it suits the case perfectly asnd isn't overly weighty - pkus it tapers to just under 16mm.
There's probably something better available but after settling on jubilee #3, throwing more $ at a sub $1k watch is...inefficient.

You use a friction bezel because you’re setting a GMT bezel against an hour hand not a minute hand. It’s not a cost-cutting measure, it has a specific function. And it has to, or rather, should be bi-directional. Not sure why you’re complaining about it. It’s a very common practice with GMTs. GMTs that don’t have bi-directional friction bezels are not a proper implementation on the bezel.

    • @slyfondle1885

So the Rolex GMT Master II doesn't have a proper bezel implementation?

    • @stevenwymor1398
      @stevenwymor1398 2 года назад +1

@@slyfondle1885 no, they're just different implementations of the same thing. They both do what they need to do. Seiko implemented it by simply removing the staggered locking click spring under the bezel. Lots of people who mod Seikos with 12 hour dual time bezel inserts do the exact same thing. But the frictionless bezel actually lets you set the bezel more accurately since it doesn't have detents so you can more accurately position it. Watches with GMT movements that don't use bi-directional bezels are the ones that are not implemented correctly because the bezel should be able to go in either direction quickly without having to completely rotate it a full 360º+ to set it properly. BTW, I never mentioned a single thing about Rolex. Why so sensitive?

I just got my Orange GMT, and I have to say it is a fantastic watch, Seiko did an amazing job. I am wearing mine on a black and grey nato. The bezel has also that grey/black effect, looks better in real life than the pictures.
Thanks Jody for the video 🙏👍

You make a good point about NH34 movements for microbrands, but it will have competition with the new Miyota 9075(?) hi beat GMT movement already appearing in a few watches.

Unless there is a deep price cut at some point, this one will have to be a pass for me. Seiko really should have made it cheaper, or given it sapphire, maybe a better clasp, plus lumed the bezel (huge missed opportunity on that last one). That said, I can't wait until the NH34 hits the market, as I'm sure there will be MANY good price/great spec'ed watches coming out in the next few years.

I think the fun factor with the SKX was it was under $300 when I got one, and some street cred being certified and showing up in media, and there seemed to be this customization culture that was going on with it. It was like young guys buying Honda Civics back in the day and mod-ing them and tuning them. It gave people a chance to tap into something watch related, without buying a luxury watch.

While I'm definitely waiting for microbrands to get this and put out better/more affordable offerings, this is definitely a very nice looking piece. For those willing to pay extra to mod it, why not replace the gmt bezel with a timing/dive style one? You already have the 24 hour chapter ring.... That would give you loads of functionality! That's what I'm hoping someone does (Long Island Watch? Zelos??) when Seiko starts selling the movement.

I've probably seen 5 Seiko NH movements for every Miyota 9000 over the years, so I'd expect similar penetration on the gmt variants. I'll definitely need to organise a head to head soon!

The Long Island Watch GMTs that Marc has foreshadowed are very appealing. It will be interesting to see what they will look like. I also think that a Phoibos Eagle Ray GMT containing the NH 34 movement would have great appeal to affordable watch collectors - the question is will the current Eagle Ray GMT / Eagle Ray cases be easily adaptable to the NH34? If so, I very much look forward to seeing those offerings from Phoibos.

So I guess if you are after a GMT and you can live with hardlex glass pressed clasps and a visually identical design to the standard Seiko 5 this must be the one? Think your comments about the movement getting into other brands might in the end be the really exciting outcome for us watch nerds. Because I’m certainly not sellling my skx to get this one becaue the GMT hand isn’t enough reason to as there is no other real advantage or progress made with the rest of the watch. Let’s see what other creations come out with this movement! Nice review Mr M!

      Yup.
Enthusiasts need to realise this is an option and then embrace it, particularly for on the fly adjustment.
Hey, I like folded end links and pressed clasps. If made well, they *can* be *extremely* comfortable. But I also prefer acrylic and aluminium inserts... But that doesn't matter. If it bothers you, fix it, exactly like you say, exactly like (and why) we are all comfortable exchanging straps.
I'm getting sick of the amount of whining in this hobby. If it bothers you, either fix it or buy something else! Don't just complain about every watch that isn't tailor made to your tastes and budget.

I’ve never really liked Seiko styling and couldn’t justify the price vs. a high spec micro or even a highly modded Orient mako/ray II. Thanks in part to your reviews, my collection of affordable watches has grown considerably in the last few months. I have a couple Steeldives, 4 or 5 different Pagani homages that I genuinely enjoy and I went on an Orient kick a while back and ended up with 5 of those, all with crystal, bezel/insert and bracelet/strap mods that kept me occupied while recovering from an injury. My latest horological itch has come in the form of type-B fliegers after getting beaten on an eBay auction on a San Martin SN030. I know I should have waited for the sale but I had to scratch the itch so I ended up buying a Steeldive SD1940 on the upgraded bracelet that was on sale right then that still has not arrived. After doing a little more research I decided that one wouldn’t be enough and I needed ‘just one more flieger’ so I have an Escapement Time PT5000 (last one available on AliExpress Black Friday sale) on the way and I can’t wait to get it on wrist to see if I like it as much in real life as I did in pictures and video reviews. I may gift or return the Steeldive but I have a really hard time letting go of watches, even ones I don’t wear because I MIGHT want to wear it one day. It’s a sickness, Dr. Jody, do you know a cure? 😂 Thanks for the great reviews!

Not a Seiko fan in general, and the 5 series in particular. Not a fan of a push/pull crown with "100m" WR... if you do more than get it wet in the rain, getting it wet while washing your car, or accidently falling in the pool you're pushing your luck.
