Wally's theme in Pokemon Ruby is just a trainer battle theme... but in gen 6... OH BOY HIS THEME IS SO GOOD!!!

Tho Willy's theme sounds good yeah, but when playing it just doesn't feel like it fits Pokémon really well, it sounds more of a fighting game than a jrpg

In Gen 2, technically the Champion theme is also a rival theme. Silver uses it in his last battle at Victory Road.
I’m mad disappointed that the elite battle themes for Marnie and Bede got left out of this. They’re so good and were unjustly left out of this video.
I guess that's because those themes were meant to be for when they became elite 4

I mean technically Marnie took Piers’ place as Gym Leader, so that would’ve been her Gym Leader theme instead of a Rival theme.

Never played Let’s Go Evee, probably never will but good lord Trace’s theme goes so hard, it’s like the original rival battle theme but orchestral
But with Let’s Go Eevee/Pikachu you can get a Mew in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl
I like that some games give you multiple rivals (5,6,8,and9), gives more themes

The thing I like about the Kanto and Johto rival themes is that they make it feel like the battle has stakes. That your rival is a threat to you and your goals. Many of the other themes make the rival battles seem like a fun little challenge and nothing more.
In the end that's exactly what they are haha, I will say N's theme is also an outlier, I love the drums in that theme

Arven and Penny aren't rivals. N is. So i'm not sure why Arven is here but not Penny it really makes no sense. I also dont get why we have both versions of Nemona's theme but not both versions of Marniw's theme and stuff
Arven is here, but he shouldn't be considered a rival. He is just someone who you both lean on each other for emotional support.
If you look on the bulbapedia page on rivals it shows Wally and May/Brendan as rivals in the Hoenn games, N, Cheren and Bianca as the rivals in BW, Hugh as the only rival in B2W2, but Nemona as the only rival in SV
