SOLVING THE PUZZLE - Dry fly Fishing New Zealand.

- This clip that was shot last season, is a continuation of the trip from the 'Getting High on Dry' video on my channel. We (myself Hans and Blair) head into the hills on the last day of the season to chase a few fish (mainly rainbows) in a remote high country setting. It's a small stream and its in low water condition, meaning we have to be careful in our presentations and 'match the hatch' more as the day goes on and the trout shift from one prey item to another. A great finish to our season.

Si hai un cielo para los pescadores ese es Nueva Zelanda !!! Un gran video, un saludo desde España !!
Hands down you are absolutely the best NZ fly fishing content producer. The depth of your videos are exceptional
Some tricky times here, Along with some frustration but what a wonderful river, great fish caught, the scenery you take us through is always breath taking and the video never fails to deliver, great to watch back to back uploads of yours and this one was right up there, great vid, hope your staying safe up your way Mike
Highcountry Flylife cheers buddy for your kind thoughts and glad as always you liked it. All good here with time to edit and fill the fly boxes so win win
Great looking Rainbows. You would love fishing the Black Canyon of the Gunnison in Colorado.
Hannahcode1 on the big salmon flies as well!
Top notch.
justin smith thanks mate
It was a real treat to see your post this morning Mike all my fishing cancelled in Dorset like you were taking 3 friends for 4 days on the Mayfly I wish the fish were like yours you certainly have stunning wild fish, you may done this before but would be very interested in a film on your rigs and setups i.e. Tippett material Breaking strain fly lines forward taper double taper don't see you degrease do you use fluoropolymer tipped .as always great film .stay safe .
Yeah thanks mate, it's not quite the purpose of what I make to weigh the whole thing done with what can be a little boring instruction and gear tips if it's not handled well... but yeah I get what you're saying and I'll see what I can come up with in that regard
Absolutely amazing video Mike- Incredible clarity, content and excitement ! Hans is becoming a familiar face and is a certainly a skilful fly fisherman. Loved the small stream, great fish and challenges they set you ! Thanks again.
Chris Rance Thanks! He’s a good angler, bloke and mate indeed
As ever...great footage Mike. Clips like this are helping us through this lockdown period, keep 'em coming! P
Paul Procter cheers P. I have some Stella stuff but that will be for a bigger project down the track
gotta love that baggy shorts 'n' tights look...main reason I got into trout fishing...only kidding, I just wear shorts and repellent, quick dry long trousers or my patagonia breathable wading trou.
This was text book instruction Mike!! Awesome video. All the books and videos suggest exactly what you guys did when the fish are rejecting your dries. Switch to emerger or downsize. Was great to see it put into practice. Thank you for another video and look forward to the next one.
Anthony Gregorio Yeah thanks, that was the point of the video, to show us going through the process to gain success. Cheers!
Nothing better than seeing a classic dry take. Well fished and well filmed.
Hard to believe you have only 15.5K subscribers. You provide the best narration, scenery, music, editing etc. of any fishing videos on RUclips. Actually, your video's are superior in every way possible. Thanks from the USA.
Steve D yeah thanks for some very kind and positive words! I don’t really chase subscribers, feeling like a beggar of sorts... I probably should though. Some of the footage I have on big fish is mind blowing. Might have to do a ‘pay per view’ on that to recoup some money... cheers again!
What's you rod wt, leader and tippet size please. Thx!
Jeff Plummer we were using 5wts with mine being a Scott Radian which is my favourite rod. Leaders were 18-20ft and generally 5x 5lb flourocarbon tippet.
@@mikefsher thx Mike long leader = stealth....
The video is great, the scenes of the trout taking the flies are fantastic. Which film camera do you usually use? Thanks for sharing
PescataMinuta cheers! I used my Sony NX80 for this movie
2 videos???!! Mike you must be bored. But how lucky are the rest of us?
Colin Dunn I wish I could be lucky too... 😐
@@mikefsher I hear you there Mike. I hope this all blows over soon!
Beautiful video! Simply beautiful nature! So clear water!
Montenegro Spinning thank you it is indeed
Watching that rainbow taking Hans big dry fly was fantastic.
John Van Vliet yeah pretty cool seeing them come up on a dry
Yeah that was brilliant at 19:20
Top video dreaming back the to trips i had in 2004 and 2009 . Just love NZ.
Jimmi Haurholm cheers for that. There are some gems to be found here, that’s for sure
That's still bearable. Here in Europe we have rivers where the rainbows can be real bastards. No chance in hell to catch them casting upstream-they seem to see perfectly fine 6x fluoro tippet. How they do this I will never know. Also don't rise to anything larger than 20-22 midges sometimes. Absolute nightmare. And grayling are even worse.
Sounds like it’s a good thing I live in NZ then! 🤔
@@mikefsher You are lucky mate, without a shadow of a doubt :)
I love the artistry of your videography, the teamwork you boys demonstrate and, best of all, the camaraderie. The 'bows outnumbered the brownies on a S Is stream? They deserve their day every now and again. 😊 Last season meaning 2019? (Have seem some big mouse browns this year. I got "after" the friend who went without telling me. Now he's stranded by Covid quarantine in a small house on the Tasman sea...some guys have all the luck!). Cheers, Mike. And thank you for the serenity. Hope to fish you with you one day if I don't get too old to travel south.
Jethro Felton thanks sooo much for heartfelt and kind comments. You'd be more than welcome to come out with me and have a crack at some of our wonderful South Island fish.
Great video work. Great clarity, Thanks for using a tripod. Thanks for taking the extra effort in setting up and spotting the fish prior to the cast. Most of all, thanks for showing your skills and making accurate casts instead of using a bobber (something that's becoming the norm in American fly fishing).
No worries and glad you enjoyed the clip, appreciate the kind words.
Awesome fishing guys and awesome film work 👍👍🇺🇸
Keep it up thank you
The Vermonter
Lambert Saldi thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!
Mike, another super video. I saw your short vid on the GS 885 and the Radian 905. Have you or your mates fished the GS 906 and how did it compare if so? Thx
Cheers! the GS 9' 6wt is another lovely stick, it's obviously a presentation style blank so not as fast as the Radian blank but i think it's a great rod.
@@mikefsher Thanks!
P.S. you think size 18 is small? Haha clearly never had to deal with 24 winter midges in Colorado
Colin Dunn true that. These fish have big tough mouths and so often the hook just pops out...
Very nice river and nice fish in good condition, great stuff:)
MrKveite1 cheers mate!
Wonderful to watch ... enjoy your content and editing etc. Real quality and inspiring fly fishing ... Thx !!
Phil Wratt glad you liked it - cheers!
One of your best mate! Thanks for putting this up today. Excellent narration, storytelling, laughs and BEAUTIFUL fish! Wowy and happy isolating.

New camera is working great. Did this vid take a lot of colour grading?
Matt de Torres this was shot with my older camera but not too much serious colour grading although I always do a little.
mikefsher great work as usual.
Great production Mike and some lovely looking water. Well done boys, really enjoyed watching while drinking my morning coffee.

David Gifford-Moore glad it filled a gap for ya!
Another beautiful production, Mike. Many Thanks. Was also great to see Blair in this one - I had a brilliant lesson from him on the Motueka a few years ago. I hope you are all well.
Cheers buddy! All good here, can't wait to get our overseas anglers back on the river!
Absolutely beautiful. River, technique, fish handling.. All on point. Perfect start of the day with a cup of coffee. Thanks
Cheers and glad you liked it!
