That's the whole point of this journey actually. Frieren retracing her steps and then learning and realising the moments and chances she had missed with Himmel. The ending will definitely be her standing before Himmel again in Heaven, this time fully realising he loved her and that she loved him too. And at that time, they can finally confess to each other. This is a bittersweet anime, and probably has no happy ending for anyone, aside from Stark and Fern getting together at the end.
@@xorngoh7303 I don't read the manga or anything, but this might be a spoiler: didn't freiren say that elves has a hard time having romantic feelings and thats why the elves were going to extinct?
A great thing to add is Himmel, the Hero, and being the star of the time, refused to marry anyone because he considered Frieren his one love. It’s really sad looking back
@@Jack_Slate I would argue common deduction. Heiter didn’t marry because he was a priest, Himmel didn’t marry anyone because the series has showcased to us his only one true love was Frieren. Naturally speaking it would be weird in that time for a well reknown man like Himmel to not be married without heirs.
Himmel: has a favorite flower. Know the scientific name of said favorite flower. One of his promises is to show this flower to Frieren. He also knows how to make a flower crown by hand. Frieren: I doubt that he knows the language of flowers.
It might just be that Himmel just doesn't want to force a relationship with an elf, knowing his own lifespan is but a fleeting thing for Frieren. Like he's been doing all of that for Frieren without expecting anything from her. He loved her. And that was enough for him. It's honestly admirable if you think about it that way.
Himmel also purposely left statues of himself behind for Frieren. He purposefully left statues with different poses behind, to serve as mementos that Frieren can remember him and their journey by. He KNEW she would be sad and lonely when her friends all dies out before her. Both Flamme and Himmel knew Frieren better than she knew herself. That she will regret not treasuring the people around her more. Himmel also knew that his life is fleeting compared to Frieren, which is why he chose not to profess his love in words and also to not intentionally point it out for Frieren. He didn't want her to suffer and hurt for losing someone she love, but to have happy and fun memories that she can look back to in the future.
@@xorngoh7303 Himmel is just the best person! 😭 He helped so many people and wants to continue helping and showing his love to Frieren even after he passed away 😭
This series did relationship sooooo good. Both Fern and Stark felt like real teenagers and their interactions were genuine, it didn't feel forced at all
It's also genuine when two people don't quite understand each other yet but slowly overtime develop understanding of each other. Unlike the 'modern' concept of a love story when the perfect girl meets the perfect guy, and they just perfectly do everything together.
Also when you look at both frieren and fern mirror lotus design, you can see it a little bit different. Fern bracelet had a design that the flower is in full bloom maybe symbolize the love between fern and stark started to bloom while frieren ring had flower that are still in bud symbolize that the love between himmel and frieren never bloomed... This episode was an assault on my emotions 😭. And this was released on Val's day too. How timely can y'all be? 💓 Hope you all had a lovely one. 😘 -im gonna say imo, Frieren probably an inkling what Himmel's actions meant. Her expression there was not her usual oblivious one. She looked taken aback. Ughhh my heart.
When this episode dropped there was a video that went viral on twitter with a bunch of Frieren and Himmel cosplayers lined up recreating the Ring scene. It was so amazing and heartwarming bcoz some of them (cosplayers) if not all are a bunch of strangers to each other. Fans say that it should now be mandatory to get down on one knee if a Himmel cosplayer saw a Frieren cosplayer. ♥️
Wow, thanks for explaining that. It’s lovely. I rarely reply to an older post, but I’m new to the Frieren story and really appreciated what you shared. Hopefully cosplayers really will do the proposal re-enactment.
let me tell you, after watching this episode, if you ever decide to rewatch episode 1 again, himmel's monologue on the journey hits so much harder. i cry MORE now when I watch episode 1, not less.
I’m in full agreement with you ladies, this and the next brought warm joy to my heart. The bonds between Stark x Fern and Frieren x Himmel are so beautifully executed, it’s so natural, sweet and lovely. It is big major highlight of this series, at least it is for me. And Sein is an excellent addition to the party, he is definitely the big bro of it.
I don't know if you guys noticed but Stark and Fern mirror Frieren and Himmel so much. We have seen Stark look up to Himmel quiet a few times now and Fern is almost like Frieren. Fern knows that she has feelings for Stark but our boy is very dense and has no idea. She was also only mad that Stark didn't get her a gift and couldn't care what Frieren and Sein got her.
Its my favourite moment of the series so far when the music swells when the spell detects the ring. Frieren's little smile at the flashback realising Himmel always knew what the ring meant and why he was giving it to her.
A few things about the ring: It was shown on the very first episode, right after Frieren cried, the bell rang. It reminded her of the ring and what Himmel did. It's a bud of a mirrored lotus, it could signify that their love never came to fruit. Himmel also lived alone all this time and kept talking about Frieren (ep 3) till his old age.
The scene with Himmel and Frieren is heart-wrenching, but also so good. The clock is juxtaposed between them, representing the unbridgable gulf of time between them. Himmel deeply loved Frieren and stayed "true" to her until he died. She is only now understanding everything that he said and did that showed his love for her. She just could not understand it then and, sadly, is only coming to understand his love for her now.
Ugh, my heart 😭This is a new level of hurt with all these flashbacks with Himmel and Frieren finally learning what he meant to her. At least we can enjoy all the Fern and Stark moments 💕
Aside from elves not being all that great with emotion and attachments to start people don't take into consideration Frieren lived alone for prob over a 1000 years. Can you imagine what that would do to a persons mental state on how to build bonds and connections with others. People who are shut ins in life for just a couple months begin to develop all kinds of detachment & social issues. Imagine 1000 years of solitude
I genuinely hope she never moves on after realizing Himmel and her feelings, and confessing to each other when they reach heaven. Keeping their eternal love for each other so pure and beautiful, and the way this story is being told it just feels wrong with her moving on in that way. 🥺🤧
The implication is that Himmel never said anything to Frieren because he understood her. He knew that if he told her he loved her she wouldn't have been in a position to reciprocate his feelings, or even deal with that confession, given her headspace at that point in her life and it was pointless. He knew he loved her and he knew their relationship had no chance of happening, and he made his peace with that and never expected anything from Frieren. If you look back at all the flashbacks, he always just laughs off Frieren's words or actions whenever she acts like a robot who can't understand people's feelings and he usually humors her and plays along, like back in the first episode when she said she'd take all of them to watch the next meteor shower to this cool place she knows in fifty years and they just chuckle at how oblivious she is of the fact that 50 years is a lot to them and when she asks what's funny about it he says nothing and agrees that they'll go with her in 50 years. He knew his whole life would be just a little fraction of hers.
The Eisen falling headfirst thing is most likely a direct DnD joke lmao. There are certain types of characters in the game where, when they're reached certain levels and got just a liiiittle bit lucky with their health upgrades, it's mathematically impossible for them to die from a fall. No matter what height.
Makes perfect sense. Terminal velocity. Doesn't really matter if you fall from three hundred feet or three thousand, at least in terms of impact. And someone like Eisen, who can shrug off lethal force like it's nothing, surely couldn't die from a fall, or even get injured. I doubt Stark would either. He already plummeted from several hundred feet while killing the dragon and was fine. He's just being a baby.
Yo I'm a grown ass man but the part where she finds the ring and it shows himmel put it on her finger fucked me up. The music in this show is perfect in every sense of the word
My friend and I watched this together and we're like, "Pretty sure he knew what that ring meant" and then Himmel does THAT, and we looked at each other like, "Oh yeah, he DEFINITELY knew"
I feel like Himmel died the way he did basically unrecognizable being slowly poisoned over the years. Keeping the cursed black dragon toenail safe for her over the years took it toll on his body.
Himmel chose not to say anything because he knew it was doomed. He seemed content with his choices in the end, even if he couldn't have everything he wanted. Telling her would just burden her with something she couldn't even understand at that point in time.
You girls will understand better why Himmel never properly confess to Frieren in the ep 16. When Himmel himself will understand why he shouldn't do it.

thats eternal love, people back in the day loved for life. just look at oldman vol, he didn't just go and find an another women just because her wife died, he still keeps his promise to her. himmel didn't ever voiced his feeling because he knew their time is completely different. Also himmel ain't gonna look for any other girl when his heart belongs to someone else.
It makes me extra sad how Himmel probably didn’t confess to Frieren nor didn’t ask her to stay after their mission because he knows it’s going to harder for Frieren once he dies
There's a reason Himmel is the number one on the Frieren popularity poll consistently. He is that much of a GOAT, even though he is already long dead in the story. He is up there on the same tier as Severus Snape as a GOAT character of self sacrifice and also unrequited love. Also, I have some good news for Frieren fans but this might come as a spoiler so be warned. SPOILER: In the latest arcs in the manga, Frieren is starting to realise that she does in fact love Himmel. She was just too slow and oblivious and couldn't make sense of her feelings due to her long age and how she was so emotionally immature and stunted. When she is trapped in an illusion by a demon that shows what her heart desires the most: She desired to get married with Himmel.
It would be weird if Himmel had confessed to Frieren. I guess that in his mind: At best she doesn't understands, she leaves, then she forgets about him. At worst, they get together one elf-day and the next elf-day he dies of old age (in ep.1, during these 50 years, she didn't really do much, she kinda returned to living apathetically (her own words) like he did before the group recruited her). What does Frieren do next? Live in sorrow for the next 5,000 years? Stop eating and die from depression?
Just Frieren should ask herself why she was so dedicated to find that ring. I think that her feelings just lie like a seed of sunflower under a deep layer of snow. Eventually that seed will blossom
Episode 16 is probably the main reason why Himmel never voiced his true feelings for Frieren. Only saying that much for those who still haven't watched yet.
That's like half of it. The other half being that she would have no idea what he's talking about. She could barely conceptualize ordinary relationships back then. Her idea of a friend is someone you visit every 50 years or so.
Ok he does have a point, guys dont care that much about birthdays and stuff, at least as much as ladies do, we do care, but more as like a oh cool its my birthday, especially when its between friends
Himmel never confesses his feelings to Frieren because he knows she's immortal. If she really fell in love with him, then she would be in eternal grief after he died.
I'm surprised I didn't fall in love with this show at this episode. I still only liked it here. For me it was 15 that made me finally fall for the hype. Maybe since I'm a guy.

I love Himmel so much 😢
