Thanks a ton buddy! I was scared when I found my indicators stopped working while I was driving. Came home, watched your video, took out the relay, tried to clean it, pushed it back- and it worked the first time. Thanks a lot- again!
Great video. I would make one small change. I'd install the relay and test it in the car -before- putting the cover back on the relay. That way, if you need to do a bit more sanding, or if it turns out a resistor or cap needs replacement inside the relay, you can get right to it without having to remove and replace the cover again (which also wears the cover with each removal/replacement).
Awesome video man! Everyone else just tells you to replace it, it's really good to see someone show us how to repair the part and keep it out of the landfill. I'm gonna go try it on my truck right now and hopefully it fixes my problem. Thanks for the info :)
I had a problem where the indicators/hazard lights were not blinking but staying solid, so knew it wasn't a bulb issue. Watched this video, did exactly what you did and it now works great. Thanks for the video, which no doubt saved me some money in buying a new relay!
Wow! Excellent information. This worked great for my 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24. My turn signal went from working when it felt like it to not working at all. The relay in my car is located under the dash beside the steering column. I had to remove one screw and a plastic cover that was blocking access to the relay. It was difficult getting sand paper in between the contacts but I did my best. I was pleasantly surprised when I plugged the relay back in and tested the signal. All is good now.
DAN! You are Da MAN! Just used this video to repair my 1999 BMW M Coupe hazard relay, which apparently also controls the turn signals. Poked my finger with the small knife opening the relay case, but no other problems. New relay would've been ~$37-$66 depending on where and how fast I could buy one. THANKS, I am back on the road!
Imagine my surprise when watching this video only to discover that you are repairing the exact relay that needs repair in MY 944! Pulled it, cleaned it, now works like new. Thanks!
So my headlights and hazards went out after a battery terminal connection went loose. Thought the turn signal (multi-function switch) had been fried by a power surge. Checked bulbs, fuses, and I was this close to tearing out half the steering column wiring to replace the switches. Saw this video just in time. Dude, you just saved me a whole lot of time, money, and hassle. I cannot believe that worked. Thank you!
Thanks for the video uncle Dan. My turn signals dont work, so i will try doing this also. And you're right it's the only video about "repairing a relay" that i found even 10 years later! haha! Hope you are still doing well. Thanks again.
Worked bootiful. Thanks from sunny Wales. Thought I'd try this before having to buy then wait for a new relay. Turns out the contact arm had actually slipped slightly so was staying on.
Just repaired my electronic flasher on my 97 Seville. I had a new one in stock, but always wanted to try to repair one of these. The only flashers that work on these 93+ Cadillac's is a genuine AC DELCO flasher. The ones they sell @ O'Relly's or Autozone seem to don't work (last time I tried). The AC DELCO 's are a bit expensive (~$50). My flasher went out during the holiday weekend, so I took it apart. I saw debris on the relay contact (like you mentioned). Cleaned the contacts. When the turn signals went out, I never heard the clicking, so I proceeded to check the board. I saw some contacts on board desoldered under the microscope. I resoldered the board & so far so good. I would suggest resoldering the board & checking the capacitor for leaking. Being a mechanic for 40+ years, I've repaired alot of modules & computers by resoldering the boards. Recently, I repaired obsolete displays on a '90 Deville by changing bad capacitors (had leaked out & shorted).
Blinkers used to be a couple of bucks. I was blown away when the blinker on my Ford Explorer was around 15 bucks. This is definitely worth a try. Thanks uploader.
Thank you for your advise ,i finally got my hands on the relay that was right under the brake release ,and i did exactly the way you showed and bingo it's working like new.You save me some money. Thank you. Good work.
This is what we call old-school wrenching, the only difference is back in the day the relays were all metal so it was easier to open but I’ve done is it 50 times or more I’m glad you posted this video thanks for sharing 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 keep wrenching.....
Hey Cousin Dan, Thank you for the instructions on the relay. In all the learning and experience in 30 years I never knew relays. Wow, it must be because old school cars had very few; ignition points. Still. I may have others about my wife's Caravan in the future. Keep doin the good work.
this is a classic youtube video of important information! my bike fired right up after sanding the contacts, no need to special order, pay big money and have to wait for shipping..........a vespa owner..............
Bought a new relay, guy didn’t know what was the right part (says flasher relay on the listing after googling make model turn signal relay, but then the details specified other uses). Anyways long story short it didn’t work, just turned the lights on solid, no hazards. That’s getting returned. So I followed ur vid. My corroded contact was impossible to reach… I tried to clean it with ifixit tools (no sandpaper) and isopropyl/compressed air. It did clean a bunch of gunk out but didn’t work. So I figured, well I have to buy a new one if this doesn’t work, so I’ll try once more without being gentle. I wedged a thin metal ifixit pry tool between both contact points and scraped around a bunch. And wahlah, it works!! Thanks man. Saved me 21 bucks but also helped me achieve another victory fixing stuff I didn’t think I could haha.
Funny that I have a 1987 924s and the wiper motor relay is going crazy, trying to fix it and i searched for relay repair... and the first video that pops up turns out someone repairing a relay on a 944! nice car man, these things take a beating and whenever something breaks down, its usually something that needs cleaning! german engineering!!!
damn thanks man saved me from buying one every 6 months. I live in an extremely wet climate and the aftermarket corrode damn fast compared to the original part! cheers!
So I'm a girl , lowly engineer by trade , don't know much about mechanics or electronics but engineering has given me a good understanding of the way things work , my awesome mechanic was having trouble getting a replacement relay , I somehow knew you could bypass a relay and wondered if I could fix it, i thought if it was done in ,then i couldnt hurt to try,was fairly different inside the casing but knew what a contact point was , super tiny space and the mechanic and I were both surprised, it worked ,kudos champ ,just made my day xx
Helpful video. All LEFT turn signal lights on my '90 miata were not working, pulled the flasher relay and tried the sandpaper fix but didn't fix the issue. Swapped the relay with another sourced from kijiji and everything working great now :)!
Very handy advice , so thank you Daniel . Incidentally , this is how to fix an electric fuel pump also , same trick twin emery paper, slide it to and fro , blow it all clean , and it works
Hi Dan, Just a quick note to say thanks!! Your fix and instructional worked like a charm on my 95 suzuki samurai..Appreciate you making this video..Cheers from the caribbean
Me too! I resolve my turn signal relay on my motorcycle after seing this video. I also spray some WD40 on the contact point and let it dry, then walaa! works like magic! Thank you so much!
Hey Daniel thanks for posting, I tried to repair mine because I was in a pinch. I run the mail for the usps and mine went out on a Saturday didn’t get to work on it till Sunday and would you know all the local parts houses didn’t have it lol. So I was needing a quick fix for Monday morning but mine was to tight to get into the connections ( Jeep Wrangler) but props for sharing....
Yeah we need more guys like you to help us out the more that we learn the more that we can save money especially when you got four five kids and you're in on in the whole you need to be a little kind of you can get thank you very much you're very much helpful I appreciate it
I took my flasher relay out of my MB W123 and opened it up. It looked pristine. I cleaned the tips of the contacts anyway and BEHOLD! Worked like a charm. Thanks!
I just moved to a really humid area, my flasher relay started corroding and I lost my signal ability. I think this might happen to other relays in the car, thanks for the video!
@dornier2828 Another problem I have seen in the past is when the thin control arm that the contact point is mounted to developes a crack in it. This means that when the electro magnet pulls it in to make contact the actual point doesn't have nearly the pressure it did without a crack in the arm. You can try putting a drop of solder over the crack to try and firm it up (I would rough up the surface first) or you can try putting a drop of Gorrilla(Rhino) glue over it. Hope that works for you!
I need help my Gmc Yukon 02 Both driver side front and back turn signals dont work but blinks fine on the inside like its suppose to what could be the problem??
@sweetXricerockets That is a problem within the axis of the steering column. There are little pins in there that catch a shut-off-clip every time the wheel turns a rotation in the opposite direction of the illuminated turn signal. One of those two components may be broken or missing.
other great video man I fix the one in my big rig one time they had that 72 hour DOT inspection going on wasn't too bad at all I didn't get to use sandpaper I just use the edge of my knife and it worked out pretty much the same way as you showed this one big thumbs up like always man I see your subscribers you're getting up there man congratulations on that
+Daniel Engling I think you're doing great man keep up all the good work I want to ask you a question are you making money with RUclips because they sent me a request for they had all the right tools to make my RUclips channel grow and I turned it down because of me living on disability I didn't want to take a chance of that interacting with what I make but it's a good thing some of my friends are actually doing it
Yeah, it's not a lot, but they do pay you over time. They pay each time you accumulate over $100. That may take months to achieve, but then for some other people that have millions of subscribers, it takes weeks.
i was able to fi my combo relay for the flasher. thanks for your video. i made to grounding strap closer. all fixed. nobody had that problem lol. plus I had a bunch of corrosion in my combo switch haha, mixture of a buncha stuff lol
Cool Quick question I have a 2003 express Chevy 1500 van when I use my blinkers they stay late and do not click ! If I keep the blinker or the hazards on for 10 to 15 minutes they will work normal . And if I don’t use it for 10 minutes he goes back to not working what do you think the problem is ?
Hey Dan is it possible to open a turn signal SWITCH and re solder a broken joint or something? highbeams & wipers work just no left or right signal (94 ranger)
@YeaKevin That sounds like a switch problem. Do you headlights turn on with the same control arm that you switch the turn signals with? After the relay it should be a direct line to the headlight or the turn signals respectively so the problem should be before that. Really you just need to do some diagnostic stuff. You're the man! Followed your orders and now my 2002 ford explorer is fully working again.
Thank you.
Hey thanks for the video, fixed my relay. Also used brake cleaner to stay the residue in the contacts! Looks brand new!

Great, thanks. Worked for me on a Honda 125 indicator relay. I was amazed, when I opened it up, that there were old fashioned moving parts.

Fantastic tips. Thanks. Wonder if the newer relays are trying to adapt for LEDs -- with the assumption that people are upgrading to LEDs?

Thanks Daniel --- you saved me $27 for a new relay and probably four times that for a Mechanic!
Yeah, I learned that back in the 70's in class, but your right, I never saw anyone speak of it online till now, good job!
All the same tech!
what a good advice! let me try it on my camry, and then i'll let you know what happens. Greetings from Venezuela, and thanks a lot!

And the music of course.
Very good! Glad I could be of assistance.
Just pulled from my 2003 Santa Fe. Opened and cleaned contacts as suggested. Worked like a charm. Thanks for the video.

I don't care about the piss, you just saved me $100 and a lot dangerous driving. Thank you!
Excellent video man: I followed your method and my dodgy Isuzu Bighorn Flasher is now working again perfectly. Much appreciated.
Very useful video, thank you so much

Yeah that's really cool brother they offered it to me about a year ago butt I haven't done anything with it maybe one day I might
amazing stuff just fixed mines 👌👍 saved money as well thank you
I have a 2010 Honda Civic when the main headlights are on it will not flash not blink at all but the turn signal light is on , what could it be?
@thegreatecb Try tracing the wires in the harness and use a test light to find out where the short is.
I can't wait to try this out. Excellent video with straightforward instructions. Thank you...
Thank you for this. I was able to repair mine.
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
awesome, worked like a charm
i was able to fi my combo relay for the flasher. thanks for your video. i made to grounding strap closer. all fixed. nobody had that problem lol. plus I had a bunch of corrosion in my combo switch haha, mixture of a buncha stuff lol
Thanks, totally worked! 2007 Triumph Bonneville
thanks man! I was able to fix mine using your vid!
Awesome
good video on how to clean the contacts in a relay. or any electrical contacts for that matter.
Thank you thats exactly what i though the problem could be with mine ill try this tomorrow
Good job, thanks a lot for the nice tip 👏👏👏
Thanks for watching!
I need to wee.
Good video!
Thanks. Also a gun book on the shelf. Two thumbs up. Regardless of why.
Good job bruv. Thanku 😁
Thanks dude. You da man!👍
@YeaKevin That sounds like a switch problem. Do you headlights turn on with the same control arm that you switch the turn signals with? After the relay it should be a direct line to the headlight or the turn signals respectively so the problem should be before that. Really you just need to do some diagnostic stuff. I hate to say that, but I really can't help you more without being there with a voltage meter.
thanks man.... ya you are the only one online.
I have a Suzuki Carry, with problems in the regulating box. I insisted on driving the car with that condition, and, at some point the tension increased to more than 12 volts, burning the radio, some lamps and ... the turn signal relay. My fault. Watching your video I think I can handle the repair: I open the relay box and see that the relay itself is melted. I replace it with another similar and recover the relay function. Thanks for the ideas.
+retrogamescl Awesome! Glad I could inspire you
Saved 16$ you da dan man
thanks, I appreciate that. glad I could help
It's a reaction between atmospheric gasses and the metals in the contact point. The reaction takes place because the added energy of the current creates an ideal environment for corrosion. It will happen over time and use on every connection like this...This one went first because the turn signal inherently opens and closes more often than any relay on the car.
Very helpful, thanks so much 🤘
