  • As the title states, this is a fix for the relatively expensive relay module for the turn signals in a B5 A4 and other AUDI/VW turn signal parts as well.
    Edit 10-9-2020
This video was made when I was a kid. Obviously it has poor focus and the instructions were vague at times, the instructions were out of syntax. My apologies for that.
    Have fun and happy wrenching!

10 years later. My A2 had this problem and this simple method fixed it actually. Saved me 60 bucks.

10 years later...this video still saved me 50 bucks! Board and everything looked good but just had to adjust the fingers on the relay! 🤙🤙

I don't know how you figured out how to take this thing apart and renew the points but I am glad you did! It was an easy and rewarding project thanks to your video.

The emergency flasher relay looked like the one in the video but the turn signal relay was much smaller. I thought I'd have to buy the new part so started messing with the relay, maybe I could pull it out with a pair of pliers but instead the top of it popped off and wah lah, it exposed the contacts/points so I cleaned them with 300 wet/dry sandpaper. Works great now.

@@rickandbevfrancis4989 Awesome!! Glad it worked for you. Still no guarantee that it will last, as I am sure there is a coating on those points. However, it is a great temporary fix.

Great video, took me a ~15 min to remove housing bezel on dash, remove the hazard relay and then do what was outlined in this video. Turn signals went from not actuating at all to working without a hitch. Thanks, Adam!

This is still king!! Just fixed my hazards 10 years after this video was posted, hehe!
So for me it was not corrosion, it was something of a mechanical issue on the hazard side of relay. I took the thing apart? Then tested it in place and saw it was working when I pushed the relay for hazard side down at the top (copper colored). So just took a screwdriver and bent it down a mm or so, then it got better free moving. At first I did all the cleaning and so as well for the connector 👍🏻 huge thanks !!

👍 Yes, just did this right now and works saved me $80. One tip, is you'll see the contact point (s), you may notice they're not lined up perfect. If they arn't, follow the large flat copper arm it's attached too up to the top of the square box that it's bent over...take a pick of tiny flat head and pull up along that area..this with lift the contact point up 1mm or two so everything lines up. Mine was both issues, corrosion and the contact arm started to sag over time so the points wern't lined up well anymore.

Wow this actually worked! I didn't even see any corrosion on my relay, but I used a screwdriver and scraped a little all-over and it just went back to normal, thank you!

    Adam,
Great video. I couldn't find this relay in my Bentley workshop manual, so you saved me a bunch of money for sure.
I used emery cloth to clean the points but it still didn't work, so I pulled it out and took it apart again. With my test set I determined that the points were not touching, so I just bent the tab holding the point a little bit. Fixed!

Thank you so much for the data! I was able to fix mine following your instructions: only change is my relays were encased in plastic so no direct access to the contacts, however, using contact spray, I was able to repair them just by spraying some contact spray on the circuit board where the relays sit. !! Thanks again!

My lights blinkers, wipers weren’t working and my hazards I had to replace my BCM and fix this relay. Boom fixed but water was the cause there were entry points in the firewall for water to travel down the wires so fix that as well or it will just happen again. Cheers from Utah.

Awesome video!!! I wonder why Audi would make an $80 part that would fail and come back up after opening it! I just finished putting it back together- didn't find anything wrong (no signs of rust at all), so I was sad because there was nothing to fix, but after re-installing it, the turn signal lights started blinking normally!!!
Thank you very much for the video!!!!

thanks for the info, i fixed my relay, it didn't work the first time when i scratched the "contact point" i l opened a gap in between, i guess it was way too open, anyway i repeated the the process, and kind a fold the metal piece in a little bit and it worked out perfectly. i was about to buy a new one. thanks again.

Holy shit! It actually worked!! You are the MAN! $0! The lowest bill yet for this Audi owner! A new record! You are hired!

This worked for my 2001 Audi A4 Quattro. My specific symptom was when I engaged either turn signal it would blink once then stop. I had to continue to flip the switch multiple times so I could fake it at traffic turns. I scratched around on the contact leads with a scribe. You could probably use the tip of a sewing needle or something to scratch it clean. I didn't see any corrosion btw but still followed the directions. I did a quick connect test before I fully reinstalled it in the dash. It worked like a charm so I patched everything back together. Very nice fix video!
I imagine this would also work on just about any Volkswagen or Audi with a similar hazard / turn signal module like this. A telltale sign that this is the issue is that all hazard lights lit up but the turn signal was goofy. Obviously the lights/circuits/wires are ok. It had to be the relay that modulates the turn signals. Wow. Thanks again!

Thanks for the vid. Although I mashed virtually all the plastic pieces and clips etc. in both the trim and the relay itself, I did manage to get it out of the dash. I couldn't make out any of the contacts that were mentioned inside the thing, so I just doused the whole item in GT85, plus the male & female connector contacts on the connector. If i can't fix something with a mixture of GT85 and swearing then it won't get fixed. It seems to be working now somehow, so job done. However, there is not a snowball in hell's chance of me ever getting those metal side clips back where they should be, so hopefully this won't matter. Also, i had to jam a mini screwdriver up through the panel beneath the connectors in order to hold it there whilst I shoved the relay back onto its connector - otherwise if just wouldn't have happened as the cables are stupidly short and will not be held in place with mini pliers. Good result all round though, bravo!

As i took this out, I quickly plugged it in again and the turn signals after months of not working suddenly have..Deerrr!! WTF!! it used to Buzz and 1 day caused a fire in the Indicator stalk, which inturn lead to a big fire, I put it out ( why? ) i wish i'd let it burn and claimed, but no I put it out, and the amount of work of replacement ive done steering, and air bag, asnd so on has been a nightmare...This I now know is where the problem is/was...So at least if the problem re happens, this video is the answer.. THANKS!!! Audi A3 TDi 2001....Nightmare Hazzard Relay..by the way £50.00 cheapest ive seen, (non Ebay)...but looking in scrap yards at many an audi, this looks the same, A4, S3, Skoda, VW Golf, Passat, the list goes on...

    Hey,
First of all, great video. This worked amazingly. Now I'm not blaming this on you because I've grown to blame every problem my Audi has on my girlfriends parents that sold me the piece of shit (i think its a gorgeous car). So i put the relay back into the dashboard and then all of a sudden my driver back window opens..........I put it up it fights me and goes back down. If I keep my windows locked it stays up. I'm not pushing any buttons on my keys either. Thanks for your help.

IF YOU ARE HAVING THE NOTORIOUS VW VOLKSWAGEN TURN SIGNAL ISSUE WHEN YOU TURN IT OFF AND IT KEEPS CLICKING IN THE DASH BOARD RIGHT BY THE STUPID HAZARD LIGHTS SWITCH , GET SOME ELECTRICAL CLEANER SPRAY OR I USED MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR CLEANER AND FLIP YOUR TURN SIGNAL SWITCH DOWN FOR LEFT SIGNAL AND SPRAY THE BASE OF THE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH WHERE IT GOES INTO THE STEERING COLUMN AND THE FLIP THE SWITCH UP AND SPRAY LIKE HELL INTO THE SAME AREA AT THE BASE OF THE SWITCH. THIS IS WHAT I DID AND IT FIXED THE PROBLEM !!!! I WAS QUOTED $365.00 TO REPLACE THE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH AND GUESS WHAT I FIXED IT WITH 3 PENNIES OF ELECTRICAL CLEANER SPRAY !!!! GOOD LUCK !!!! TRY IT !!! I BET IT WILL FIX THE PROBLEM !!!!

Susan Miller This is actually the correct way of fixing the relay. Scratching up the relay contacts is a good temporary fix, however contact cleaner will ensure longevity.

You don't need to remove the springs on the sides or the bar at the end to open it. Just undo the clips as you do around 2:30 minutes into the film, and you open it.
