The highlight (if you can call it that) of my rugby career was playing against Jonah in a high school sevens tournament back when I lived in NZ. He played forward at that time. He was not only the biggest guy on the field, but also by far the quickest. As a smaller built guy I was used to tackling many of the big Maori and Island boys who had a good 100 lbs on me when I was 17-18, but he was something else. Most bigger guys you could drop by grabbing their legs, but the problem with trying to do that with Jonah is that he was just so big and so tall that it was almost impossible to grab both legs at once. The game I played against him I think he scored 4-5 tries on his own. The one time I got close enough to even attempt to tackle him all I could grab was one leg. He must have dragged my skinny white ass about 40 yards down the field (without hardly slowing down) before he finally shook me off and went in to score. I managed to keep hold of his cleat though! As he jogged back after scoring I tossed it back to him with a comment "goddamn you're a big bugger." He just smiled and said "nice try bro." I felt a whole lot better about my effort when I saw him shrugging off seasoned international players while playing for the ABs the very next year. Many of his highlights involve him just steamrolling over his opponents, but the thing he doesn't seem to get enough credit for is his speed. He was RIDICULOUSLY fast, which made him even tougher to stop. Brace yourself to try to tackle him and he goes around you. Try to match him for speed and he'd catch you off balance and send you flying with the old Maori (or in his case, Tongan) sidestep. He was offered a NFL tryout contract at one point, but playing for the All Blacks was his dream, and even though he could have made a fortune by switching (rugby was largely an amateur sport at that time) he followed his heart and stuck with rugby. RIP big guy. Truly a legend in the world of rugby.
The amazing thing fans his pace from 10-30 metres. By his fourth step he is at full speed. His pace was so long that even a slight swerve is like a big sidestep. His legs were so powerful that it was almost impossible to hold him round the legs. Many of the tacklers look scared to tackle him, but some were just hesitating to try and avoid the fend.
I was sitting eating in a sushi spot in Auckland, NZ and he and his girlfriend asked if they could share my table. I was like 'uh yeah'!. He sat in the chair next to me and I could not believe the size of his thighs... he was a tall and very strong dude and the chair he sat on looked too small, so I can only imagine the terror of seeing him charging your way. However, he was the absolute sweetest guy and I had a wonderful conversation with him and his girlfriend about sailing of all things. RIP Jonah... we miss you.
Samoans,Tongans & fijians are pure heart when it comes to sport...passion & pride on their sleeves...big & tough on the field...gentle giants off it...there are so many playing league & union down under in Australia & New Zealand...assets to the sport in every way
Auzy nazis if that isn’t the gods honest truth I don’t know what is! I live in Chicago, and the All Blacks were here to play and shoot a commercial. I was walking down the street, minding my own business when I, quite literally, bounced off one of their players. I wasn’t looking where I was going, in my own little world, and suddenly I was on my ass. Granted, I’m only 5’7” 110 lbs, but it was like walking in to a brick wall 😂. Most people, let alone star athletes, would be all uppity about bumping in to them, but this guy just laughed, helped me up and then asked if I was ok. Now I’m not one to get easily star struck, but having been a fan of the All Blacks, I damn near lost my ever loving mind and went bright red. Dude even gave me a big old bear hug after I apologized profusely for bumping in to him. He was so sweet about the whole thing. Made this little gals day that’s for sure!
Awesome reaction guys, one thing you have forgotten is Jonah had incredible natural balance for his size as well, then incredible speed, dukes (Side Step) and strength added in makes him a once in a generation player. We may not see anyone like him ever again.
Great reaction, I got Lomu to shoulder barge your like button, and fended the face of subscribe and slam the try😁I think he had a thing for the French team, as France I believe is NZ nemesis😉👍
Truly a Legend. Admired and respected by players and fans all over the world. There will never be another like him. Loving your reaction videos to Rugby and Rugby League...especially the kiwi players you highlight. Total entertainment guys..keep it up
England lost the World Cup final to that man. He died of kidney problems in 2015 at 40 yrs old. Most commentators would say he could pull along several players, but mainly he pulled in the crowds.
Best rugby player all around the world. He's not just another rugby legend. He is the number one rugby legend in rugby history. He is a very gifted rugby player. He played rugby with one kidney.
Jason Taumalolo would look tiny next to prime JONAH 😂 Freak of nature….it was his speed that was truly AWE Inspiring to watch It was beautiful to see in full flight….
Kyoto Vaiau I’m Australian and of course the Wallabies are my team. But damn I love those Allblacks too, love seeing them win. I’ve been kiwi brainwashed you sneaky buggers lol
All blacks = the most winning sports team in history....any sport. Lomu was 6ft 5", 120kg and ran the 100m in 10.8 seconds. Plus he was agile and could hit like a train. A total gentleman off the field as well. I got to see him play for Auckland vs Queensland in a pre-season game at Ballymore in the late 90's. Watching them warm up, Jonah looked enormous on the wing, training with the backs. Then he went over and stood beside the forwards and he was taller than almost all of them too.... That night he was up against Ben Tune - a very good, 100kg test winger for Australia. Tune was just a speed bump all night long. Jonah terrorised him....not for the first or last time. People say he was the first rugby global superstar...but has there ever really been another? Maybe Dan Carter or Richie McCaw rank higher in history. But before Jonah, wingers were always small, zippy players...he changed the game. Coming up against someone that big, that agile, that fast, you have to change or you are going to lose by 50. NFL teams were lining up for this guy early in his career, but every NZ kid wants to be an All Black...probably why they have been so good for so long.
Great reaction vid fellas :) The one thing nobody ever talks about when it comes to Jonah Lomu was his balance. His ability to absorb the hits because of his awesome upper body strength, but then stay on his feet after bouncing off several tacklers without losing his power and pace was tremendously underrated. The only athlete I've ever seen that he could be compared to is Bo Jackson. Similar size, speed and power. Both were transcendent sportsmen.
2:01 Best and Fairest player for Hong Kong Sevens (one of the most iconic rounds in the Sevens series). 2:30 Yes. Imagine Alonzo Mourning and Sean Elliott averaging double-doubles in the NBA Playoffs.
The difference between most Polynesian juggernauts and Jonah Lomu is Jonah has mythic level speed and balance... doing weights standing on a Swiss ball at 6’5” 260-270lbs.
Before Jonah appeared on the scene the general rule was that forwards were big but slow, the backs were small and fast. Jonah's position was wing (a back position). So being big and fast broke the rules. Now most backs (especially the outer backs) are in the Jonah mould and the forwards are now much faster (but still big).
Craig McCullough ...still not many wings at 120 with his speed...even today..Nadolo is an absolute monster though..easily bigger than Lomu and just as effectivd...just not the athletic freak that lomu was...lomu had speed..but was sick from the very beginning..so we disnt see him at his best ever...he would collapse after training back in 95.
Craig McCullough lmao I cant think of one back who is in the jonah lomu mold. For christ sakes maa nonu looks like a tank out there and hes only 6ft and 210 lbs. Lomu is 6ft5 and 270!!! and is much faster. He would still truck the fk out of the guys today.
Awesome video guys! In rugby they kick for goal after a try (5 points) for a extra 2 points, & if the opposing team commits a foul they can kick a "penalty" for 3 points. This is a video tribute to All Black Dan Carter who retired from International rugby in 2015. He played flyhalf or first five which is the closest thing to quarterback in rugby. He would often decide the plays or make it up as he went along & he was also a phenomenal goalkicker. ruclips.net/video/ejYBz1iA7EU/видео.html
Jonah lived with failing kidneys and ended up needing a transplant. Eventually, that kidney failed as well and he passed away waiting for another. Most of his career he only played at about 75%. He's compared to Bo Jackson.
thank you for this.... great to hear an american reaction......his opposite number once famously asked his coach how do you tackle l him?..answer was bend down behind yourself pick up sum shit and throw it in his face.....what if there is no shit to throw? coach said if he running at you dont worry there will be shit lol
Lomu died of kidney failure. It plagued him basically his whole life. He knew he was dying, and decided to play as long as he could. Being hooked up to a kidney machine in a wheelchair was not his idea of life. He went out on his terms, something few of us may ever know.
jonah lomu was the biggest freak at 260 pounds or 118kgs dudes way to explosive for his size can move his huge frame around like a lightweight and can move faster still super fast twitch
Just gona say if you guys are going to do another lomu reaction you should do the 'lomu big hits' video. It's got some rare footage because most of his other highlights are the same old recycled shit. The big hits one is my favorite one it shows his power
It must be remembered that Rugby is often played between nations. The United Kingdom (UK)/Great Britain is comprised of several nations which all Hate England. ruclips.net/video/NbvbQPq4LXk/видео.html England v France always relives Agincourt where the two Nations fought one another in 1415. The advert is from Shakespeare’s “Henry 5th”. ruclips.net/video/nD6gN5aeLcg/видео.html and when England play Argentina it is difficult to forget the Falklands war of 1981. Just so you know why rugby can be so violent when they are fighting for their Country.
1.2 something (Bolt ran a 9.58). Don't get me wrong, he is fast. But he could not win an all state 100m. Those high school males at State level run low 10's with the record being 10.00 flat.
@@TheInfinityzeN you're right. 1 second is a lot of time in a 100m sprint - but if Lomu had the exposure to state level sprint coaching and culture, then he would have adapted his body to be more lean. He was a tank so it's stupid to compare. 10.8 is serious wheels for his frame.
Hey fanatics! Shifty76 really great to read your recollection of playing against him, thank you for taking the time to post it.
Awesome story

cool story Toko(bro in Tongan)
Size and power, and speed and agility and skills, what a freak. R.I.P.
once-in-a-generation freak athlete! RIP

1:40 When he played in the 7-men rugby, he was in the 7's sides that won 3 series titles in a row then.

Goat!!!!
You guys have great logical insight.. Nice reaction
Greatest ever! No pad or helmet protection lololol 🤣
Its not just his speed or strength that were an issue. His agility was amazing too, you can see it in how his body leans when he makes a new run.
Far and away the best thing to ever happen to Rugby.
Should do a video on his funeral Haka, an amazing scene
6'5", 260lbs, 100m in 10.7s.
And a fantastic sportsman.
RIP
loved your reactions dudes, jonah was an awesome all black, pacific hard!
Lomu and Cullen my two favorite ball runners of all time.
Best rugby player all around the world. He's not just another rugby legend. He is the number one rugby legend in rugby history. He is a very gifted rugby player. He played rugby with one kidney.
Great reaction guys!!!!!
As I've always thought, he had a wicked right arm which alone could overthrow any player trying to tackle him;.....
It's a brave man who stood in front of Jonah. RIP
Brave Men!
Jason Taumalolo would look tiny next to prime JONAH 😂

RIP Lomu, I'm a diehard AFL fan but respect where it's due. NRL has some incredible athletes, Greg Inglis is brilliant to watch
The best thing about watching him wasn’t his form but rather the aftermath he left behind him..

The highlight of the scene just has to be at 07:50 when Jonah simply barrels over poor old Mike Catt before slapping down for a try.

Best of Jonah Lomu part 1 and there's also a part 2
🐐
Fun fact-I sometimes spotted Jonah at the gym...
What you call a "Fend" rugby calls a "Hand-Off" it must be an extended arm and an open hand.
it was a fend back in the day.
Jonah lived with failing kidneys and ended up needing a transplant. Eventually, that kidney failed as well and he passed away waiting for another. Most of his career he only played at about 75%. He's compared to Bo Jackson.
