    I like Mallory's "innocence" playing the part, giving her age, she seems a little bit softer throughout the song but I still prefer Laura's approach 'cause she just seems more angry with Conor and the whole situation, I feel like it really fits the character and the story

    I think Laura’s version of Zoey just seems more angry with Connor than Mallory’s.
    That’s why I gravitate more towards the original.

      I like both versions but also prefer Lauras. Lauras version seems more angry and a little more mature while Mallorys version sounds more innocent and younger. Both are good but I think I just prefer the angrier version for the character in general.

    Mallory definitely sounds younger, like a standard 16-year-old, but Laura really gets across the character of a teenager that’s been traumatized by her brother. Also the harmonies in the official version of this song with her parents are BEAUTIFUL

    I prefer Laura's version. Aside from it being the OG version, it was performed with more vulnerability (?). Especially on that last part of the song. The song through most of its entirety showed her anger and defiance of showing grief for her brother who i guess terrorized her at times but the last part was sung by Laura in a way that showed that despite that, she still felt his loss in the end.

    I like Mallory because she adds the young quality to Zoe, it fits the age more as opposed to Laura’s more jaded feel.

    I like Mallory's version better, I don't know what you all think but is like: in the song, at least in my interpretation, Zoey is feeling bad because she does not miss ou mourn Connor, so in Mallory's version she really gives me that vibe "Oh my god, my brother is dead and I don't feel anything. Am I a monster for it?". While in Laura's version, Zoey's angrier, she sings like "yeah I will not mourn you brother because you were the monster and I am completely guilt-free".

    Mallory has a beautiful voice and what an honor to have them write a version just for her to perform alone...that being said...she just doesn’t sound like an abuse victim. It’s too sweet, and clean, and simple. Not at all what feelings for an abuser are like. Especially when it’s someone you you both loved and hated.

  • @carr0760

    Mallory played the role in 2018 when she was 19. Laura was 27 when she was in the role. That alone is going to have a huge impact on their interpretation. Especially given that the character is 16ish.
    I think this is lovely.
    Laura....wrecks me.
    I'm going to re-listen to both right now and edit with my thoughts on why hers hits me harder.
    I'm back..put my musical theatre teacher hat on, and I would say the difference is two-fold. First, simply the age difference as I mentioned above... Mallory's voice doesn't have the maturity/depth of Laura's (obviously) so that changes the tone of things.
    Also, Laura's performance has more emotional layers. With Mallory, I mainly get hurt...her brother hurt her...and confused.
    With Laura I feel her wrestling with her emotions. She's hurt, she's angry, she's confused...she's saying that she won't pretend to be sad because Connor was a monster to her...she hated him, she's relieved that her villain is gone, but she's also sad and grieving, despite maintaining that she isn't. And she's surprised by that.
    There's just so much more in Laura's.
    This is really lovely though, and she has the potential to go so much deeper as she gains experience and maturity.

      i find the age thing so funny though cause to me it's the complete opposite with the Evans. My favorite Broadway Evan is always gonna be Taylor Trensch, who I am pretty sure was the oldest actor to play Evan but somehow managed to completely fool me into thinking he's a high schooler which I really didnt get from any of the other actors (apart from Andrew ofc), so yeah I find the impact of age in a certain role very interesting :D

    • @carr0760
      @carr0760 3 года назад +2

      @@lara_bejes7890 That's not the opposite at all. LoL
      I said that the older actress does a better job because of the depth she was able to bring to the performance.
      There are a lot of factors at play when it comes to the playable age of an actor. For example, Ben Platt was convincing as a high schooler in The Politician in 2019, but based on the trailer for the DEH movie, he is not even slightly passable just a couple of years later. Why? Because of the age of everyone around him. In The Politician, all of the actors are playing significantly younger, so you can suspend disbelief. In the new movie he is quite a bit older than the other actors, so he sticks out like a sore thumb. They also made is so much worse with the hair and styling choices.
      We all know he's way too old at this point, but it can work if done right (as The Politician showed).
      Sometimes being older helps because life experience adds depth. Sometimes being younger helps because it brings a level of innocence. Age can definitely impact interpretation.
      (And of course, all of this is also dependent on whether or not the character has a clearly defined age)

    Requiem is a song that had to grow on me (like "glove". I didn't GET that song until after I'd listened to it a number of times).
    I think I slightly prefer Laura's version. There is an anger mixed in with the hurt and pain in her version, and I kinda dig it like that. Mallory's is all sweetness and light and sadness and it's just gorgeous. Both are pretty amazing.

    I like this cover more because it reminds me of my relationship with my mom and it really incapsulates that.. 'I'm a hurting little girl' feel and it makes me emotional. it's less of a rage and more of an emotional numbness. like a 'why would you hurt me like this when I tried to love you' it just hits so close to home
    I always replace the 'son' at the beginning with 'mom' and imagine that my mom has already passed and it hurts so peacefully

  • @zoe_moth
    @zoe_moth 3 года назад +6

    To me, Mallory's Zoe fits what Zoe was written as better. She's a girl who watched her best friend become someone completely different and likely grieved the good part of Connor before being expected to grieve the negative part of him, which should cause anger, but doesn't because of Evan's lies. The letters make Zoe feel she's in the wrong because Evan's practically said Connor was nice, but needed a friend. So in turn she's questioning if she's the one in the wrong while still having the knowledge of Connor being a bad person.
    And there are a few other details from the book that make Zoe feel more like Mallory's portrayal.
    Zoe ran away in an attempt to receive attention, when this fails she's sad and moves on. Laura's Zoe would have probably lashed out, and Gabby's Zoe would probably have guilted her parents.
    She's never actually mad at Evan. She's just saddened. Laura has a bit of anger in her voice, and Gabby's is just flat out mad, while Mallory's is confused and hurt. Which is how Zoe was written.

    • @zoe_moth
      @zoe_moth 3 года назад

      @@SongsFromASuitcase they did amazing with the book. Some people say they ruined it by making Evan not as likable, but they forget that the story is being told from the perspective of a lying teenager.
      We just get these amazing details to the story though, Evan's relationship with his dad, his relationship with his mother is fleshed out much more. Connor gets his own chapters and we get to learn his story. Evan explains his relationship with Jared. And we get this extra side of Zoe that really helps to flesh her out. Sadly Alana doesn't get much more development, but hopefully she gets it in the movie (I think so as they are adding a solo in for her)
      But the book is amazing and I do recommend it, if you don't have time or money though there is a audiobook on youtube read by one of the Evan's (I can't remember which one right now, but I think it was Trevor) and Mike Faist does the reading for Connor's chapters. And Mallory actually sang a bit of Requiem and Only Us for it as well (it's actually nice that they didn't actually edit Mallory's voice at all in the audiobook and you just get the sort of image of Zoe alone singing to herself)
      But yeah, the book is great, you should check it out and if you can't it's real quick and easy to find the audiobook on here

    Though I adore both Laura and Mallory's portrayal of Zoe, I personally prefer the innocence that Mallory brings into play. Laura played Zoe very angry and withdrawn, where Mallory seemed to play her with a strong sense of that naiveness that comes from being so innocent, which really adds to the hurt tone of her voice when singing songs such as this one. It leads her listeners to, in a way, see how Zoe longed for love and affection, and that is why she was so gullible when it came to Evan's influence over her. I think the way she sang this song really shows that she was jealous of all of the attention Connor was getting, even after his death, and that she was also hurt that despite being the only child her parents have left, she was still being pushed aside. I hope that explanation makes sense lol

    I'm on the fence with this. I can see both sides. Having lost my own brother to suicide, there's a whole host of emotions to grapple with. There's intense guilt- I didn't do enough, I didn't love hard enough, I wasn't there enough, guilt over feeling numb or feeling angry. There's anger- he could have gotten help, he could have kept going, look at what he put us through. There's crippling grief. It's a lot to handle as an adult, so I can only imagine the challenge of walking that through as a teenager.
    In terms of how they sang it- adult me relates more to the angry version. Probably because I'm much more aware of the nuances of those emotions. Teenage me- I'd probably relate more to this version. I'd be curious to see how she did this on stage, I feel like it will be different than here.

    I know that you are a soft, mushy kind of person so may I suggest "Only Us" from Dear Evan Hansen, but sung by two actors who played Evan and are now a couple. Ben Levi Ross and Taylor Trensch. She and Laura both sing this song beautifully. However, I feel like the lyrics call for the anger in Laura’s version. She’s literally singing about how horrible he treated her and their parents and I’m sure she also angry at him for killing himself(and making her feel like she should mourn when she can’t). I just feel like if fits the situation a bit better.
