Zoe didn't want to sing a requiem because Connor bullied her throughout her life. She sees him as a monster. Their dad didn't want to sing because he felt like Connor and him aren't close because Connor wasn't open. Their mom, she refused to think that Connor is dead.
Zoe, Connor's sister, felt he was a monster but Evan's letters are challenging her memories of him Larry, their father, now feels like he failed his son Cynthia, felt Connor was misunderstood and the letters vindicate her feelings It's so heartbreaking, I love this song so much And Connor was just depressed and a drug user and killed himself after the final straw, when he signed Evan's cast (after Waving Through A Window) and thought Evan was nice to him, but then read Evan's letter-to-himself and found out about his crush on his Sister, he felt in that moment Evan was using him to get to Zoe (or that's my interpretation)
I appreciate that you said that Larry feels like he failed his son, instead of defining him as the indifferent father some people do. I feel that Larry really did care about Connor, but just didn't know how to help or where to start. He made mistakes, but he didn't know how else he could approach the situation than giving Connor space. With this song I feel that he sounds desperate. That he won't sing a requiem because his emotions are just so torn and confused. And then with the song "To Break in a Glove" at the bridge I feel that he truly misses his son, and regrets that he didn't try more. Larry is not the bad guy- no one in this musical is. It's just that he made mistakes and fell prey to human flaws, which is something we all do at times. I apologize for the long comment by the way :')
It's never clarified why Connor killed himself. He suffered from constant depression and had several unchecked mental health issues, so it's assumed it had to do with that.
Ik that this is really late, but it's also because of how many people bullied him, Evan's letter, which he misinterpreted, finally pushed him over the edge
Great reaction, I love these musical ones, just some insight to your Connor, Zoe, Evan, back story questions. No spoilers here btw. Connor was mad at Evan's letter because he found it after coming to apologise for being angry at Evan earlier (which is when he signed Evan's cast) He read it after that and Evan wrote about Zoe (Connor's sister, and Evan's one-sided crush) being the only person who could save him from himself and Connor assumed Evan deliberately wrote it in a creepy way to mess with Connor which is why he ran off, and he committed suicide later because of what was likely a huge number of reasons that had mounted up on him so much, not just because of the letter. As well as that Zoe and Connor didn't get on as teenagers because Connor had anger issues and they often yelled at each other and in the musical it's mentioned that while he was high he had threatened her once when she annoyed him and she never forgave him. Hope this helped you understand the characters and story so far more and can't wait for the next reaction
“If I could tell her” is next and I can’t wait. Also btw the reason Connor killed himself was because he was in a bad place and he mistook evan’s letter to himself as Evan making fun of Connor
What I love the most about this song is that it perfectly shows how each one of the family members are dealing with Connor's suicide, something I didn't noticed was the play of lyrics with each character sings the lines- Zoe: " (dad:why should I have a heavy heart) why should I say (mom:I'll keep you with me) and Zoe: "and lie saying that I miss you, and that (dad: my world has gone dark) without (mom:I can see) your light" Zoe is going through denial, feeling as if she can't truly miss her brother or her presence because she didn't really like him while he was alive and around. The dad resents Connor for committing suicide feeling like he threw his life away and now the dad feels hopeless and empty like a piece of him is forever gone. The mom feels hopeful and feels a sense of clarity because of Evan and the emails, for her a part of Connor lives through Evan hence why she take him under her wing as if he really is her real son. Call me slow but I didn't retalize all that after watching the musical for the first time, I only got it after listening to this song everyday for a week straight lol
And Connor already had many demons. After he read the letter was just the cherry on top to the mountain of issues he had. As sad as it is, Connor's suicide just seems so inevitable.
Connor, you saw a bit of this in the “Does Anybody have a Map?” Animatic you watched, but Connor had a lot of stuff going on and his family, or at least the majority of them, just assumed he wanted attention when he threatened to take his own life. Evan’s letter was the trigger but not the main reason he did it. Zoey isn’t completely wrong in thinking he’s a monster; he did bully her. But that’s what I love about this story: nobody’s free of blame, and nobody’s perfect.
If you can watch "Did you fall or let go" by blueberrybun920. I think it's after "Only us" (I think it's called that) or after "You will be found". It gives a bit of extra insight
I'm happy you're enjoying this play! DEH was the first one I listened to (Wicked being one I saw in person and I recommend that one too). But this is just setting you down the emotional rollercoaster. Welcome to the fandom, please enjoy your tears.
I love this song so much, it's so sad and beautiful at the same time and the art fits so well with it. I agree with you that this entire thing is very sad, it is very sad
Connor commented suicide because he had bad depression and most likely had a disorder of which I forgot the name of, aka why he’s really defensive n stuff because he feels as though he’s all alone. He feels like everyone’s just out to hurt him so he’s really defensive about it. Like in the bootleg after his death his mom and dad were arguing and the mom yelled at the dad how before the dad said he was being depressed for “attention” so even though Connor probably tried to get help, it didn’t and his family weren’t that surprising
hey just to answer your question they never specifically say why he killed himself but they make it seem like he was a troubled kid. the scene with evan and the letter hints that he's extremely paranoid because he goes as far to accuse evan of writing the letter in front of him on purpose just to piss him off. the way that he is a loner and the way that he seems to carry himself are all just hints to the idea that he was probably depressed. they mentioned once in the musical that he had even attempted to kill himself before but the father thought he was just seeking attention. thats not a spoiler or anything im just telling you that because they never mention it in the songs.
Not even kidding, I listen to this song a TON, but still, to this day, if I sing along to it I WILL cry. I have three sisters, and I usually do this when I loose something (block off pain so that I don’t have to feel it) and this song hits me so hard everytime, bc I can imagine how it must feel in that situation, and ouch
See what I love about this song is that it really makes you think about relationships similar to Zoe and Connor’s. In a way, Zoe is right. When someone who acts terribly dies, all of the awful things they did don’t suddenly get forgiven. It’s easy to forget, but Connor did physically and emotionally hurt Zoe because of his anger issues. I’m by no means saying that he was a completely terrible person, but the things he did to her cannot be easily forgiven. And yet, after his death, all she sees are people singing his praises (hence the “what a great son and wonderful friend”). She is torn by the idea that he was a good person and can’t believe it, and, I mean, with what she had seen she had no reason to. In her frustration she sings about how she would not mourn him because that would be like admitting to herself that he could be forgiven. Of course, when she remembers how things were back when they were happily siblings she feels emotion, but this isn’t her missing Connor. No, this is her missing the person he used to be, back when they were both children. Connor’s mother, Cynthia, although faced with similar experiences, has a different way of expressing her feelings. She may know how Connor acted and how he had changed, but she wanted that hope that maybe he was actually good. When she got the fake email it was leverage for her to hold on to that image, because she wanted to believe it was so. She thought she finally had her son back (the same son who would play happily with his sister). And with Connor’s dad, he has the tendency to ignore his problems and hope that they go away. He never addressed any of Connor’s psychological issues, usually dismissing it and hoping it will pass. We can see this in the first song of the musical “Anybody have a map” when He seems to not care about Connor being high and just reads his newspaper. He always treated Connor like his actions was normal (which would probably upset Connor since he could not get help but that’s just my speculation so ignore it), and refused to mourn as if this problem could go away if he ignored it too. Just a reminder that this is all how I view it so if any of this is incorrect I apologize.
I always perceived it as being the reason Connor killed himself was because he was being, in a sense, bullied at school because everyone talked about him plus the really strained relationships in his family. Connor's dad kind of jumped on him a lot and it was obvious that they had a lot of fights and same with Zoe. Connor was just severely misunderstood, he had bad anger issues and depression that was never really confronted properly and so he smoked pot to escape it all. That doesn't mean he was completely innocent, he did threaten Zoe on multiple occasions and scare her with his anger problems but he just needed some help even it was the minimalist. That's what I got from the musical when I listen to the songs and watch the musical itself but it could be something else.
It isnt specifically stated /why/ connor killed himself. It's known that Connor did threaten suicide before and the family blew it off, so it could be simply that he was depressed and no one understood him as a person. (This isnt to condone anything Connor did, he was a very mean and borderline abusive person, but just to give some understanding to it.)
Warning: the second half of songs in these shows are rly rly sad!!! Also, Zoe who is Connor’s sister in the song as u know, is also Evans crush and has been for years. Just wanted to remind u :)
Evan wrote about how he loved Zoe(Connor's sister) and Connor misinterpreted it as in quote" some sorta sex letter about my sister" because he "knew he'd read it". Then later that night he goes home and kills him self it is never explicitly stated why but I assume it's because everyone makes fun of him and that letter(found on his dead body) was the last straw.
It's never said outright in canon why Connor did what he did but it's very obvious that he was going through very bad anxiety/depression, possibly bpd. And his mom tried to get him therapy, which was working. But his dad thought he was being overdramatic and pulled him out. Connor had violent tendencies but he definitely tried at least once to be good.
No spoilers here :) It’s never specified in the play WHY Connor committed suicide. All we really know is that he had some anger problems, which he often took out on his sister Zoe. His character is super ambiguous in that we only really see him at the start of the play before he dies, and we don’t actually see him much at all after that, but his role throughout it kinda the devil/angel on Evan’s shoulder (more will be explained in Disappear) Connor also did some drugs and his relationship with his father (Larry) was messed up because he wouldn’t really want to help Connor. The mom mentions that last time Connor said he wanted to kill himself, Larry just dismissed him, he never really took his son seriously. Hope this helps x
The cause of his death is left unclear. It did happen just after he has a breakdown over Evan’s letter. He still has the letter on him; that’s how soon he kills himself. On the other hand, it’s pretty clear he was unstable way before this; Zoey remembers him pounding on her door at night threatening to kill her for literally nothing, for example. So ultimately we really don’t know why he did it.
evan's letter that he wrote to him self mentioned zoe and connor was really upset by this (kinda forgot why) so he committed suicide and he had evan's letter in his pocket so the family thought it was a suicide not assuming evan and connor were close
Great reaction! I’m going to comment again that when you get to Good for You you watch the one by Ros Mo because it includes the added audio from the show!!
(Not a spoiler just wanted to clarify this) Zoe never liked her brother he used to bully her and pound on her door threatening to kill her so she isn't singing about missing him but asking why she should be sad when he did all of this horrible things to her
Connor had several very severe and unchecked mental health issues (including at least depression) which is assumed to have contributed to why he committed suicide. It is never outright said in the show the exact reason that tipped him over the edge however.
Honestly, the only person i can understand here is Zoe (and maybe the mother a little bit). Connor was horrible to Zoe and the mother did push for therapy (for Connor) for a little while, but then took him out of it bc the dad said it “wasn’t worth the money”. That’s why I get so mad when he says “I gave you the world, you threw it away”, like, he just saw Connor as a disappointment and I don’t think he even cares his son is dead.
late, but evan and connor had one semi-friendly exchange in the library, in which connor signed evan's cast this was the letter he found "Dear Evan Hansen, Turns out this wasn't an amazing day, after all. This isn't going to be an amazing week, or an amazing year because... why would it be? Oh, I know, I know: because there's Zoe, and all of my hope is pinned on Zoe who I don't even know, and who doesn't know me. But, maybe if I just talk to her, nothing would be different at all. I wish everything was different. I wish I was part of something, I wish that anything I said mattered to anyone. I mean, face it: would anyone notice if I just disappeared tomorrow? Sincerely, your best and most dearest friend, me." TL;DR: Connor thought Evan wrote something about his sister so he could find it and freak out. Connor had a short temper, and everyone thought he was crazy. I think the letter was just the straw that broke the camel's back. -also probably depression or something but i'm just explaining everything the show told us-
If anyone is new to the fandom and already knows the storyline, here's the basics! (Including actor/actress, age, and full name) I hope this helps!!!! Marc Evan Hansen (Ben Platt) 17 yrs old Heidi Hansen (Rachel Bay Jones) forties Zoe Murphy (Laura Dreyfuss) 16 yrs old Connor Murphy (Mike Faist) 17 yrs old Cynthia Murphy (Jennifer Laura Thompson) forties Larry Murphy (Michael Park) forties Jared Kleinman (Will Roland) 17 yrs old Alana Beck (Alexis Molnar) 17 yrs old
Why Conner OD'd isn't clear it could have been on purpose but it could also have been accidentally taking too much. Same for why Evan "fell" and broke his arm
I believe Connor killed himself because he was devastated that his old friend Miguel (that he had a crush on) never responded to his message. Hence the “we can both pretend we have friends” and the CONNOR was his suicide letter or whatever.
Am I the only one who wants to know how Connor feels about most of his family not missing him? Connor didn’t deserve what he got me, and he got a sister who says that she refuses to feel bad, and a father who doesn’t care. It’s not right
Ummmm this is really late but Connor was addicted to drugs, had anger issues, hated himself, abused his little sister, and had fallen into serious depression. He had no friends and was alone his whole life.
evan didn't really admit to being connors friend before connor read the letter and got mad he asked if he could sign evans cast, and so he did. he wrote his name and it took up almost the whole part of the cast,, and said 'now we could pretend we both have friends' so when evan got sent up to the principals office and had his first encounter with connor's parents evan tried telling them that connor didn't write the letter (they thought connor wrote it and it was directed towards evan since it read, 'dear evan hansen' as the greeting) and it was in his pocket after he committed,, but the parents wouldn't listen and just said that 'he is in shock' (because they thought evan was just really surprised about the news and that's why he said that connor didn't write it) and after almost completely convincing the parents that he didn't write the letter the mom pointed out connor's name on evans cast, and that's when evan kinda just freaked out and went along with it (and then he got invited to the murphy's house,, where evan talked about how him and connor were the bestest of friends
The reason Zoe doesn't want to sing a requiem is because Connor was abusive to her when the drugs started. Larry (Dad) doesn't want to because he and Connor never connected. Cynthia (Mom) doesn't because she finds Connor and who he was in the letters from Evan. She doesn't really acknowledge that he's dead.
NO SPOILERS Connor was depressed to begin with. He dealt with anger issues so people treated him like a freak and bullied him which is also why he had no friends. Connor and his sister Zoe developed a bad relationship as they got older because of this. They would argue a lot and when he turned to drugs in order to deal with the pain, he would often threaten and abuse her while high. When Connor found one of Evan's letters at the printer in the computer lab, he saw that Evan wrote about his sister and thought that Evan deliberately wrote something creepy so that he would get angry so he could tell everyone that Connor was a freak. This is what pushed Connor over the edge to commit suicide. He ran off with the letter and his parents found it on him when they found his body and thought it was a suicide note written for Evan. Which is why his parents thought they were friends.
This song reminds me of my dad who left me 8 years ago and I know he does drugs and I'm scared he will die and I wont know but also I dont think I would be really upset
Zoe didn't want to sing a requiem because Connor bullied her throughout her life. She sees him as a monster.
Their dad didn't want to sing because he felt like Connor and him aren't close because Connor wasn't open.
Their mom, she refused to think that Connor is dead.
She didn't refuse to think he's dead she found peace in the thought that she got to finally understand her son and that he had a friend
The audio differences are because this blended the cast recording with a live bootleg so you could understand more and have a bigger emotional impact
Zoe, Connor's sister, felt he was a monster but Evan's letters are challenging her memories of him
Larry, their father, now feels like he failed his son
Cynthia, felt Connor was misunderstood and the letters vindicate her feelings
It's so heartbreaking, I love this song so much
And Connor was just depressed and a drug user and killed himself after the final straw, when he signed Evan's cast (after Waving Through A Window) and thought Evan was nice to him, but then read Evan's letter-to-himself and found out about his crush on his Sister, he felt in that moment Evan was using him to get to Zoe (or that's my interpretation)
Jimmy Wise I thought he was mad at him because the letters said to Evan and he thought Evan was trying to make him look like a creep.
PalyTyla something like that, I get different meanings at different times I listen to it
I was legit about to write the same thing you did😂 it’s sums the whole Connor suicide up
Sam Hynes thanks :D
I apologize for the long comment by the way :')

evan's letter that he wrote to him self mentioned zoe and connor was really upset by this (kinda forgot why) so he committed suicide and he had evan's letter in his pocket so the family thought it was a suicide not assuming evan and connor were close
The next song is "If I Could Tell Her". I recommend Link Too's animatic of the song. The art is really good and it has a funny bit at the end

Connor had several very severe and unchecked mental health issues (including at least depression) which is assumed to have contributed to why he committed suicide. It is never outright said in the show the exact reason that tipped him over the edge however.
Next is ''If I Could Tell Her'' grab your tissues because let me say this is sad but amazing
I still love this animatic, but ego else really wishes she reacted to mushie's animatic of this song?
This is one of my favorite musical songs
Honestly, the only person i can understand here is Zoe (and maybe the mother a little bit). Connor was horrible to Zoe and the mother did push for therapy (for Connor) for a little while, but then took him out of it bc the dad said it “wasn’t worth the money”. That’s why I get so mad when he says “I gave you the world, you threw it away”, like, he just saw Connor as a disappointment and I don’t think he even cares his son is dead.
late, but evan and connor had one semi-friendly exchange in the library, in which connor signed evan's cast
this was the letter he found
"Dear Evan Hansen,
Turns out this wasn't an amazing day, after all.
Sincerely, your best and most dearest friend, me."
TL;DR: Connor thought Evan wrote something about his sister so he could find it and freak out.
Marc Evan Hansen (Ben Platt) 17 yrs old
Heidi Hansen (Rachel Bay Jones) forties
Zoe Murphy (Laura Dreyfuss) 16 yrs old
Connor Murphy (Mike Faist) 17 yrs old
Cynthia Murphy (Jennifer Laura Thompson) forties
Larry Murphy (Michael Park) forties
Jared Kleinman (Will Roland) 17 yrs old
Alana Beck (Alexis Molnar) 17 yrs old
A great musical is wicked plz do that
I dunnno. Wicked is a classic. I'm sure she's listened to the songs already
Angie maybe not to
Why Conner OD'd isn't clear it could have been on purpose but it could also have been accidentally taking too much. Same for why Evan "fell" and broke his arm
Pls upvote so she can see this
I believe Connor killed himself because he was devastated that his old friend Miguel (that he had a crush on) never responded to his message. Hence the “we can both pretend we have friends” and the CONNOR was his suicide letter or whatever.
Connor committed suicide because of him doing too many drugs and slitting his wrists until he bled out and died (he had depression)
I lost it after they added the initial dialogue
I'm too early but... I can't wait for her reaction to So Big/So Small ;)
Am I the only one who wants to know how Connor feels about most of his family not missing him? Connor didn’t deserve what he got me, and he got a sister who says that she refuses to feel bad, and a father who doesn’t care. It’s not right
Please listen to "if I could tell her"! From DEH!
Her brother would abuse her but she would get in trouble
Ummmm this is really late but Connor was addicted to drugs, had anger issues, hated himself, abused his little sister, and had fallen into serious depression. He had no friends and was alone his whole life.
My poor baby zoeeee
Connor was abusive and so his sister Zoe didn't feel any sorrow when he died and like, I can't exactly blame her
evan didn't really admit to being connors friend
before connor read the letter and got mad he asked if he could sign evans cast, and so he did. he wrote his name and it took up almost the whole part of the cast,, and said 'now we could pretend we both have friends'
so when evan got sent up to the principals office and had his first encounter with connor's parents evan tried telling them that connor didn't write the letter (they thought connor wrote it and it was directed towards evan since it read, 'dear evan hansen' as the greeting) and it was in his pocket after he committed,, but the parents wouldn't listen and just said that 'he is in shock' (because they thought evan was just really surprised about the news and that's why he said that connor didn't write it) and after almost completely convincing the parents that he didn't write the letter the mom pointed out connor's name on evans cast, and that's when evan kinda just freaked out and went along with it (and then he got invited to the murphy's house,, where evan talked about how him and connor were the bestest of friends
The next is If I Could Tell Her!
NO SPOILERS
Connor was depressed to begin with.
I love this song so much ;-; and also I figured it out. Kliemen (last name) is hangin out with Evan so his parents will keep paying for his 🚗
