Sue Bird's famous Big East Tournament buzzer-beater needs a deep rewind | 2001 UConn vs. Notre Dame
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 3 окт 2024
- In 2001, the previously one-sided rivalry between Connecticut and Notre Dame finally turned in the Irish's favor as injuries weakened a typically unbeatable UConn team. But in the middle of that season's shift, the Big East Tournament Final stands on its own as a back and forth battle that wasn't settled until the very last moment.

Sue Bird is a legend. Her resume is about as impressive as it gets.
Five-time Olympic gold medalist
Four-time WNBA Champion
Two-time NCAA Champion
Won a national high-school championship at Christ the King High School, a Euroleague title, and Russian Superleague title
Four-time FIBA World Championship gold medalist
College Player of the Year
2-time All American
Eleven-time WNBA All-Star
WNBA All-Decade Team
All-time WNBA assist leader
Edited: She won another WNBA title.
Edited Again: She won another gold medal
5x Eurolegue champ, 5x Russian National League title, 2x Euro SuperCup winner. 3x winner of the Nancy Lieberman award (best point guard in the nation while she was at UConn) and she is going for more!!
😳...Woah that resume stacks up against anybody who has ever played pro basketball.
Yea but who is she
Those 4 Olympic gold medals are insane
5 medals 😂 now
Swin Cash, Shea Ralph, Diana Tarausi, Sue Bird, Abrosimova and Ashja Jones on one team is absolutely insane man
He I has said many times that this 2001 team was his most talented team ever. Even over the undefeated teams he’s had
I know a lot of people are probably going to be like "Woman's basketball, who cares" but this was a really good video. I did not know that Sue Bird played of for UCONN or hit a shot of this magnitude but damn this video is really something.
DarkChocolate33 that 2001 team must've been ridiculous to watch with Taurasi, Bird and Cash
Same, I had no idea this even happened. But I'm glad I learned about it.
I've enjoyed this video series and to be honest with all the NBA stars talking about the WNBA I've started paying more attention to women's sports. I still don't personally find it as exciting as the NBA but I have to admit I definitely failed to give women's athletics the fair chance it deserved!
@@JonEffinZoidberg I just don't find watching most womens sports interesting. The level of athleticism between top-level male athletes and top-level female athletes is a huge gap. I find watching women's sports at the highest level similar to watching male high school sports.
Kyle Gardner play
drinking game, every time you hear the word "torn acl" take a shot
Drunk
I love the fact women’s college basketball getting its love here. And the UCONN/ND was deep
These videos always give me chills, “Welcome to a moment in history” 😩
Anyone else get goosebumps during the actual clip of the rewind during each of these?
This one in particular, that bounce off the rim just adds that perfect bit of extra tension.
Not really. I'm a huge Uconn fan but I was almost 13 at the time so my fond memories of the program were in the later years.
The ACL injury part got me too though. That was a just devastating, and her scream made it even worse.
Those ACL tears. I cringe every time
Poor Shea Ralph alone, according to her Wiki, has had 5 ACL surgeries!! Yes, FIVE!! And as a wrestling fan, I thought someone like Stephanie Newell had awful luck with ACL injuries (she's had 3 torn ACLs in 3 years), but this is taking the piss honestly!!
Female athletes are 5 times more likely to tear an ACL than male athletes. It's a gruesome right of passage
Nobody:
Every other player: so anyways, I tore my ACL
I had avoided watching the replay of Shea's scream all these years, but saw it in this video and immediately choked up. It was so awful. She was down, wailing, for a long time before they got her off the court. Gampel's never been quieter.
@@philipdawson7800 and to add on to the story of Nixon Newell, she'd already torn her ACL prior to even becoming a wrestler when she was playing soccer back in her high school years. She's so tough to keep fighting threw injuries
crazy how much talent was on these two teams. Some of the greatest basketballers of all time.
I actually bought the book. Really good read. Bird is a legend and is still making shots like that till this day.
Jeez that Uconnteam was stacked!
not that's it's any important but the fact Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi were on the same college team and are both the GOATs of the WNBA is one of the most underrated sports storylines.
Please do the Jose Bautista game 5 7th inning home run against the rangers
+
W
Literally came here to make this comment.
If it hasn't been done, someone needs to make a MLB logo silhouette of a Jose Bautista's bat flip from that moment.
I'd rather see Cain's 1st to home
This was a great video, the star power on those early '00s UCONN teams was incredible
Geez!! The amount of torn acls that were announced during this video lol omg.
Sadly, it's a reality of the women's game. They're something like 5x more common in women than men, and basketball's pretty much the worst sport for them.
Poor Shea Ralph had the worst ACL issues of any player, and it wound up keeping her from playing pro even though she was a phenomenal player.
You should do David Freese’s walk off home run in game 6 of 2011 World Series or Joe Carter’s World Series winning home run in game 6 of 1993 World Series
Eli Sotirakos agreed
That walk off made me emotional and im a dodger fan. Just reminded me why i love baseball.
I want joe carters soooo bad
I remember that Joe Carter homer. That was huge in Canada.
Saw David Freese walk off live. My friend is from Dallas and she started crying as soon as it happened. I felt so bad for her.
Do mario chalmers cluth shot in the ncaa tournament
How To SAVAGE 968 yes I remember watching that live
*clutch
I’m a Rangers fan and I want this
Omg yes that was the greatest day of my life. Rock Chalk Jayhawk
I enjoy basically every episode of rewinder but this one is by far the best
This made me curious about WNBA stats, which lead me to finding that the Uconn starting 5 consists of 3 members of the top 20 scorers ever in the WNBA, including the all-time scoring leader.
2005 champions league final please!!! Such a great story to be told
Queue the 1999 champions league final too. What a crazy ending of a match
PussyKiller69 Chelsea vs Barcelona 2012 semifinals
Makes me sick just thinking about it
99 Works better for this series because they can use solskjaer's goal. Idk what moment they would use for 2005 because it was 3 goals rather than one single moment.
poopisnotpoop the last penalty maybe?
Since College Football is here soon do Vince Young’s TD against USC to win the National Championship
As a Trojan fan that was devastated about that game which was on my birthday, I would love to see that video because it was such a memorable moment
erok7007 YES im a longhorns fans
Probably the Greatest National Championship of all-time.
Yes
There’s already a good 30 for 30 on it.
Incredible! Never seen this before. I've just watched the ending 5 straight times! The 1st two times I watched Bird's reaction as the buzzer went off! Phenomenal! The next 2 I watched Genos reaction! Incredible! Then I watched the fans!! Awesome!
So Swin Cash, DT, and Sue Bird ALL went to UConn??? 3 of the most dominant WNBA players ever from the same school, at the same time! That's impressive.
The 2001-2002 team was hands down THE best team ever to play in the women's college game. Went 39-0, had four top ten draft picks (Bird, Cash, Asjha Jones, Tamika Williams), had the greatest women's player ever (Taurasi), two other drafted players (Jessica Moore and Ashley Battle), etc. And all but one of team members is still in the sports world as of 2022.
One of the best basketball games ever played, and I watched every second of it.
Do Damien Lillard’s buzzer beater against the Rockets in the playoffs! That’d be very nice
Times two
Yeah and his buzzer beater against the Thunders.
Done!
How about an episode on Luis Gonzalez’s game winning hit in game 7 of the 2001 World Series? That would be a great episode
Yes this please
As a Red Sox fan this would make me so happy.
Do Ray Allen's game winner vs Iverson's Georgetown in the big east tourny.
Came here from the video they just made of that lol
@@ritoion5120 I did too!
2008 Brazilian GP... we need it NOW
Holy crap I would pay for this.
I would absolutely love this but I also don't wanna go through the heartbreak of Felipe losing that title again
Oh wow...I forgot that was Massa's year. I think it was the last time Kubica was in a driver's seat...also back when BMW was still in F1.
Seattle loves Sue Bird!
sue is a legend
This is an awesome series with a great premise. Many of us have seen these plays out of context and they’re not that special. Giving the clips context makes them so much better.
I'm a huge Seattle Storm fan loved Sue Bird, Swin Cash & Lauren Jackson. Didn't know Cash, Bird & suprisingly Taurasi were on the same UConn squad at one time. Kinda sad because I know all the schools NBA players went too and their teammates. WNBA should get more of like an NBATV type station too.
How about Devils vs Rangers Game 7 in '94? Anyone think that deserves a rewind?
Definitely does. There at so many great sports moments he could keep this series going forever
So proud of the Yukon Territory and all their hard work 🥲
This was awesome - thanks for the in-depth analysis!! GO BIRDDD
Diana Tirazzi (sp) was an absolute machine, and probably was my favorite women's ball player of the 2000's.
Please do JR Smith's headscratching decision against the Warriors in Game 1 of 2018 NBA Finals.
Thanks for doing this video! I've only followed the WNBA for a couple of years and had no idea about Bird or Taurasi's college careers.
Oh we doing female basketball now?
Teresa Wetherspoon 3 pointer
You know the one.
September 4, 1999, Compaq Center (formerly The Summit, now known as Lakewood Church Central Campus), Houston, Texas.
I don’t know the one idgaf about women’s basketball
@@jamesshaw4021 care enough to comment that
The one that didn’t win the Liberty the championship? 😎 Yes I was and still is a Comets fan.
@@bjnt92281 yoo sshhhhhhhhhh we dont talk about that
that blurry close-up @5:15 killed me
Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi on the same team? Holy crap!
I read the book and it's amazing. I love women's basketball and the stories in the book are so well described, from the start of the amazing season till that buzzer beater, everything is connected.
I love basketball and Sue Bird a basketball legend
The shot this year from Notre Dame against UConn and then in the finals is worthy of this series maybe in a few years
Two of arguably the greatest wnba players of all time on the same tram in college jeez. Uconn share your talent
I think the 2005 Capital One Bowl could warrant a Rewinder. The panic of the final play along with that being Holloway's only touchdown catch of his career would make for a fantastic ending. The weird scoreline, LSU's QB situation and how both teams ended up there would be some interesting storylines to get in as well.
Sue Bird is an AMAZING basketball player! I became a fan of the Seattle Storm, when they drafted Lauren Jackson, but it was during the next season when I came to love this team, as much as loved the Supes'. She and Lauren Jackson were such a great duo on the court... Winning the Finals in a short amount of time, then doing it again in 2010 (it helped having Cash money come over from the Shock, in 2008...), and this last season she broke a few more records, like total career games played. Sue Bird, you f***ing KICK ARSE!!!
Best draft the Storm ever made, 2002 1st round, 1st Pick!
Sue Bird = Legend
Do Lemond winning the tour by 8 seconds over fignon in 1989
Tiger Wood's put on the 18th hole of the final round of the 2008 US Open to force a playoff with Rocco Mediate deserves a deep rewind.
What a stacked UConn team
Do the Malcolm butler interception
Rewind: WHY TF DIDNT THEY RUN THE BALL
@@crayolapencils247 They didn't think that INT would happen tho. How many INTs at the goal line happen.
The amount of ACL injuries though...
Wowwwww I truly forgot how deep this UConn women squad was, Diana, Bird, Cash and the other guard that blew out her knee this game...
Yo that UConn team is insane half that team are hall of famers
This is amazing!
Jesus Christ, Connecticut was stacked. Abrosimova, DT, Swin, AND Sue Bird? GOTDAMN.
The Shot (Laettner), Jose Bautista's bat flip against the Rangers, the GB@ARI where A-Rod converted 4th-&-20 and a hail mary before Fitz got 80 yards, and/or Malcolm Butler.
Nova vs North Carolina ending!!!!!
I was JUST ABOUT to suggest this. I remember the Living Room Reaction / Celebration with my dad. For nostalgia reasons this one is huge for me.
Ive never been as interested in womens basketball then i am right now
This reminds me, rewind Arike Ogunbowale's TWO!!!!! buzzer beating threes against UCONN and MS State to advance and win the NCAA championship respectively. (UCONN one wasnt a three, but still, damn close to one and is still crazy)
You should do Kirby Pucketts game 6 home run in the 1991 World Series
Game 1 of 1995 NBA finals would be a great one, lots of stories. Even just the Anderson free throws.
Do the Steelers v. Cardinals Super Bowl!
Show these kids Joe Carters homerun in the World Series.
This is by far my favorite thing to watch on RUclips. Great job! Keep it up! I hope you do Patrick Kane’s clutch goal to win 2010’s Stanley Cup.
2007 Fiesta Bowl sometime? Hook-and-lateral on 4th and 18, then a running back throws a TD in overtime, and then the Statue of Liberty to get the 2-pointer. Crazy game.
Little known fact. Derek Rose visited UCONN as a middle school baller during this team's run. Unknown to the UCONN team, Rose had touched the door handle leading into their gym. Thereby transferring his voodoo curse to the Husky's for 10 years until Swin Cash, who is from Pennsylvania, shook Rose's hand before his game against the 76ers in the 2012 playoffs.
The curse returned to its host where it still currently sits.
Please do a rewind on either Paul Henderson’s goal in Game 8 of the 1972 Summit Series, or Gretzky to Lemieux in the 1987 Canada Cup.
Joe Carter’s Walk off Homerun. That needs a rewinder. Being from Canada, it was a HUGE deal.
We need a 2011 kemba big east run with the shot against Pitt video
Bobby Thompson's Shot Heard Round The World, or Willie Mays' Catch in the 1954 World Series (I feel like people think its overrated without knowing how deep he had to run to make that grab in the Polo Grounds, nevermind cut off both baserunners)
Very well produced
PLEASE do Liverpool's 2005 Champion's League Final win (soccer). 3-0 down at halftime to the best time in the world with a completely average squad, and Liverpool manage to win on Penalty Kicks. It's immense I promise
Please do Raúl Tamudo's goal against Granada to save Rayo Vallecano from relegation in 2012,that was a historic goal for the small team that I love
Excellent video! I was familiar with Sue Bird’s name, but I didn’t know anything about her until I saw a RUclips replay of her recent Jimmy Fallon appearance. That led me to look for more info on this Sue Bird magic moment, which I might have ignored had it not been for my recent interest in women’s college basketball. Yes, Caitlin Clark’s phenomenal year was part of my increased interest, but my interest went from almost zero (except when the Lady Longhorns were in the mix, as they are this year) to very interested in UConn women’s basketball when Paige Bueckers joined UConn. I discovered Paige’s phenomenal talent when she was a sophomore in high school. I was so wowed by Paige’s gifts that I probably watched most, if not all, of her high school games the first year a video highlighting Paige’s talents popped up on my RUclips feed. My interest in the WNBA is still almost zero, but when Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers join the WNBA, along with so many college players that I’ve become familiar with this year because of Caitlin Clark’s and Iowa Hawkeye’s exciting style of basketball, plus watching the exciting talents of Longhorns like Madison Booker, Shaylee Gonzales and Rori Harmon, to name a few, I may actually start watching the WNBA. And for those Caitlin Clark naysayers, make sure you get the facts before you throw any shade her way and have to backtrack (like Ms. Swoops). Anyway, I am glad your video provided so much background info before this Sue Bird last second shot so that I could appreciate it that much more.
He’s back
WE LIKE SPORTS AND WE DON'T CARE WHO KNOWS
This series is great!!!
Sue Bird still plays in the WNBA, she's had a strong career and is considered one of the best WNBA players with 2 championships and 10 all star appearances.
Make that 3 championships now.
Villanova’s buzzer-beater for the National Championship in 2016 needs a rewind as well. What a game that was.
Hearing that Shea Ralph girl’s voice frightened me. That’s so sad
That’s a hell of a lot of ACL tears
Vince young’s 2005 TD vs USC
As a USC fan, please no
i think they did it
Do a Rewinder of Joe Carter's World Series winning home run. It's been 25 years so it deserves its due
That UConn team was STACKED.
Alec Martinez Stanley Cup winning goal in 2014, who also scored the series winning goal against the Blackhawks, who knocked them out of the playoffs in 2013 on the way to their second cup in four years. I think that would be a great rewind.
Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi and Swin Cash? This team was loaded
For college football please do Iowa’s Hail Mary against LSU or Appalachian states blocked field goal to win against Michigan
Chuck Boris I vote for the app state upset
No App St please, I was there, don't want to relive that moment, it was too painful ..
I vote for iowa...
As a Michigan fan, you better not do the App state game.
Judging by their WNBA careers, that UCONN team was stacked.
David Freese game 6 heroics deserves a deep rewind
Good vid... Please consider rewinding the Liverpool vs AC Milan 2005 Champions League Final!
Drinking game: Take a shot every time he says, "torn acl". You will dead before the video is done.
The next one should be the ending in the 2013 Iron Bowl between Alabama at Auburn with that amazing return
Name this video “Torn ACL rewind”
Basketball is my favorite sport.
Need to make a Rewinder on Chris Davis' returned field goal
Two things I’d love to see
Bautista bat flip or the punch the season after
Fleury’s series winning save on Lidstrom
Tayshaun Prince block on Reggie Miller in the Eastern Conference Finals.
This is the first time I've cared about women's basketball, which is really a testament as to how awesome this video is.
Ouch
