Candace Parker's historic dunk deserves a deep rewind | 2006 NCAA Tournament

  • Опубликовано: 18 мар 2020
  • It's the 2006 Women's NCAA Tournament, and Candace Parker is dribbling toward the basket with a head of steam. It ... kind of looks like she's about to dunk. What if she does?
Well, this is where it's worth reflecting on some history, both long- and short-term. Broadly speaking, dunking isn't a big deal. In the past, dunking has been controversial and even forbidden, but these days, it's a common part of the game. Efficient, exciting, and celebrated.
What about for women? That history is a bit more complex. It starts with gifted female athletes being driven away from the game of basketball, and it continues with complex and sometimes patronizing critiques of women bold enough to dunk.
Parker hopes to make dunking as ordinary for the women's game as it is for her, but that's in the future. For now, we have to understand the complex past of this basketball skill.

I think women's basketball's desire to prove they "could do what the men do" inadvertently led to how professional women's basketball is suffering financially. Dunking is still a rare feat in women's games and the games suffer from lack of entertainment at times.
As a man I don't believe I'll ever understand the frustration some of these women must have felt, but I think the rim should be lowered to increase interest and revenue for the sport. Women dunking on 9 foot hoops with smaller balls could be equivalent to men currently dunking on 10.
It doesn't matter that the women "can't do what the men do" because their bodies are different. But the best female bball players in the world deserve to be entertaining and make more money

    • @EvilDickism

Agreed, the same happens in football, the pitch is too big for them, and the goalkeepers are too small for the dimension of the goal. This is why long passes and shots, sprints, and attemps at clearing a good shot are so dull in Women soccer. The pitch and the goals need to be smaller in proportions of their bodies so they are more intense games, more competitive and more fun to watch

    • @CardsNHorns04
      @CardsNHorns04 4 года назад +21

100% agree. That’s why I support the NBA taking over the WNBA. A lot of people say “the WNBA should be gone, it loses money!” While that is true, the NBA wasn’t the juggernaut it is now 25 years into its existence. That would have been 1971, which the NBA was fighting the ABA for players and attendance. Add in that women, to this day, are not considered “feminine” if they play sports. That hurts development of the game because young women see that in middle and high school and do more “girly” things to attract the boys. It’s gonna be a while before women’s professional leagues take off, and they may never be as successful as men. Doesn’t mean they shouldn’t exist.

25 years in the nba could fund itself. The fact that you mention a competing league proves the health of basketball far more.

See, the thing about Candace was that she was hugely popular in Knoxville and still is. I was a kid at the time the Lady Vols won back to back nattys and they were just as respected as Fulmer's football team was. Some may find that unlikely, but having a legend like Pat Summitt at the helm makes it happen.

Beat egg white until foamy; brush over crust. Sprinkle with sugar. Cover edges loosely with foil.

Think about it, if women’s basketball was as advocated for as much as femininity was on them, then we’d have greater talent and see these things more often than not because like men’s basketball, it would have examples and evolutions for generations. Women’s basketball players my age and younger are just now doing some of the things nba players have long since been doing because of that as well. When you actively deter and discourage a target group away from something like this, it takes longer for that talent and skill to develop. That’s the point that this video makes. so many soccer momments need rewinds. 2012 UCL final, 2002 UCL final (Zidane), 2006 WC final, watford x Leicester championship playoff game (almunia's save, deeney's goal), 2005 UCL final (schevchenko's final penalty), 2006 UCL final (belletti goal).
and that's only the finals, you can go on with other key games

You have to do a rewind on Zach Levine’s legendary performance in either 2015 or 16 dunk contest if you guys are doing a rewind on a simple dunk that probably happens multiple times per game in the ncaa and the nba

Hey great job on this video. The context and narrative were very solid. Getting a guy to do vo will help and I hope the comments don't get too messy. I'm glad you have the lady balls to do this sort of stuff sb. Now you've proved you're brave enough for this, take it a step further and try showing your audience cricket.
