Michael Jordan's life-saving dunk from Space Jam gets a deep rewind
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 3 апр 2019
- Everyone remembers Michael Jordan's arm-stretching dunk from the end of Space Jam. How could you not? It was the most important play of his career, since it saved him and the characters of Looney Tunes from lifetime imprisonment on Moron Mountain.
But do you remember everything behind that moment? Do you remember how Jordan's opponents, the Monstars, built their team? Do you remember how Jordan ended up in Tune World in the first place? Do you remember the unsung clutch hero of this event: Bill Murray?
This literally incredible play needs a deep rewind to be fully appreciated.

MESSAGE ON BEHALF OF SB NATION: we do not view Michael Jordan’s accomplishments as something to fool about. Other than his choice of jeans, we find nothing about him to goof on. This is a serious look at an event that changed the world - nay - the universe as we know it.
Also our actual April Fool's goof was when Seth pantsed Will in front of everyone and it absolutely killed. Y'all should've seen it. Ok love you bye!

Why are people claiming this is an April Fools Joke? This is the moment MJ became the GOAT. He lead the greatest comeback in Sports History.

That last shot by MJ should've been worth 3 points and resulted in The Tune Squad winning by 2. I don't think you can blame aliens for not having a solid grasp of NBA level talent. I think as far as the team goes the build was pretty decent for the era. You're looking at it from todays pace and space style of play which is just ridiculous.
In the mid 90s having Bradley fill the center spot and sliding Ewing and Barkley down to PF and SF respectively is a legit plan. With Jordan having a near 100% usage rate for this game, clogging the lane with tough bigs seems like a good strategy; MJ has never been the greatest 3pt shooter and it only really failed because Bugs got on a hot streak in the 2nd half, which they could've never have predicted.
Also they didn't scout Bill Murray because he wasn't included in the original roster and at the age of 44 with no track record of athletic talent, nobody knew he was an NBA ready distributor with exceptional court vision and handles. The Monstars just couldn't have planned for that.
Let's be honest as well, the refereeing in this game was so biased. Jordan literally crushes an opponents skull to make this dunk. In the replay you can clearly hear the cranium shattering as he stamps on his forehead... Different era I suppose though, things were tougher back then.
Ultimately, this game will forever be marred in controversy for the 'secret stuff' scandal. In all honesty, the Toon Squad lucked out being sandwiched in between the WWE steroid trials and the high point of the MLB steroid era in the late 90s. Fans had just had too much of it at this point and were apathetic to the whole process. Say what you will about David Stern but how he managed to sweep this under the rug, I will never know.
This comment needs more likes.

Yeah, except that the Monstars chose their targets before they knew that MJ was going to be involved on the game. So, their plan working on some level was just random chance more than good planning.
Brilliant.
This is the comment I needed.
@@LuckyBird551 Exactly, the aliens didn't even NEED elite NBA talent to beat the Toons, since this was before they recruited (kidnapped) MJ onto their side, so any NBA talent should have been enough. I.............just realized we are both taking this video way too seriously. lmao

The 62-18 lead the monstarz gave up should be a “collapse” episode or a “the worst” episode
Jokes aside, Collapse is for teams who fall down over a period of several years (and usually have yet to fully recover). The Worst implies something fundamentally awful about the event, and while those who reject Space Jam's cult-classic status might believe it qualifies, that is a matter of debate. This is a choke, and Rewinder is probably the format best suited for such an event.
The 9 points given up in zero game time elapsed flies under the radar
The Monstars went from almost winning it all to fading into obscurity all in one game. Sounds like a pretty massive collapse.
I'd love to see a COLLAPSE on Spanish soccer team Alavés. A team that went from a Europa League final appearance to dropping to 2nd, coming back to the 1st division, then dropping to 2nd and even 2nd B in less than 10 years. They needed 6 years to come back but they're on 1st division once again.
Also, they almost won that freaking Europa League final, they lost against Liverpool because of an unlucky own goal in extra time. From the 2nd biggest match in European club soccer to playing a regional league (2ª B in Spain is divided into 4 individual groups, with teams only playing against their "neighbors") dominated by stadiums with less than 10k seats, some with under 4k.
The monstars blew a kinda one sided it isn't-18 lead

"The Monstars got cocky"
...That's all you had to say. _Y'all know how MJ takes things personal._
“That’s all he needed.”
“Yosemite Sam exploited Tune World’s archaic stand your ground laws...”
I’m extremely happy they touched upon this part. Tune World has never had a mass shooting nor had anyone technically “die” from a gunshot, so that’s why their gun laws are equivalent to the Wild West’s. If this game took place on the Earth’s surface, there’s no doubt that Sam would have been immediately arrested and that the Tunes Squad would have been disqualified. Excellent research!

To be fair the monstars didn't have great scouting because they weren't from this world
True I was thinking they probably just went for the easy pickings.
It was actually a brilliant little detail that they didn't scout Jordan because he was technically a baseball player at the time. All they did was scout the current players.
You thought NBA analysts were clueless? Wrong! They're paid to disseminate the wildest predictions based on one game performances so any aliens watching pick the most dysfunctional squad and the loonies preserve their freedom again.
They asked Mel Kiper who to pick

Stand your ground seems pretty reasonable. If a man pulls a gun on you and your daughter and you decide to pull your gun and kill him first. You should not be held responsible, you should be given a medal. If stand your ground is used on unarmed people (no sharp tool or gun) then yes its overused, but that's not what it is about.
I remember seeing this game live. I had chills.
According to Basketball-Reference. The Nuggets and Jazz played a game three days after the Suns/Knicks game. The nerdlucks really missed out here since they could have stolen the talents of Malone, Stockton, and Mutombo at once. Mutombo was at his peak in 1995.
