My grandfather was a Mississippi state alum. I got to watch this game live with him. He died less than a year later. This game will always be close to my heart.
I was in a hospital waiting room in Starkville, MS, waiting for my nephew to be born, watching this game on a tiny TV. He finally made his arrival in the world right when OT started, and this continues to be one of the most memorable nights of my life.

I was in a hotel in New Orleans having an allergic reaction to an ingredient in a drink from Bourbon Street. My face was swollen and I could only breath through my mouth. It wasn't to the point that I was worried but my wife was definitely worried. But MSU was leading UConn and I wasn't going to leave as long as it was close. That shot dropped and it was awesome! I only wish I had been in a bar on Bourbon when it occurred. It is worth noting that this MSU victory over UConn changed the landscape of women's college basketball. @Money Mitch No one asked for it but it was still awesome! It's almost like being completely close minded limits your ability to experience new things!
Rampage Voider Actually I tweeted them to make this several times and commented it (and it got lots of traction) on their 2005 Bulls/Wizards rewind video. They couldn’t have done a better job than they did here. Really captured the magnitude of this moment.
I'm ecstatic that SB Nation finally did a video on something related to Mississippi State! You guys have GOT to make a Beef History or Rewinder to the end of the 2019 Egg Bowl. The hatred these two schools have for each other is extreme and dates back over a hundred years. Mississippi State, formerly known as Mississippi A&M, is located in Starkville, MS. Starkville is a city coated in Maroon and White, and is very much a lower/lower-middle-class area. Many of the residents are farmers and live on farmland. Fans of Mississippi State are predominantly blue-collar workers. If you've ever watched or attended a Mississippi State football game, there will be one thing you'll always remember about it. That thing would be the cowbells. The cowbell has become an iconic symbol for the Mississippi State program. The reason why is because of a particular urban legend told by many older residents of Starkville. As the story goes, during one game where Mississippi State (called Mississippi A&M at the time) was being beaten pretty badly, a cow escaped from a nearby farm and somehow wound up on the field in the middle of the game. The sound of the bell clanging around the cow's neck kept scaring the opposing team's players, and after the cow was removed from the game, Mississippi State went on to mount a comeback and win the game. And now, over a hundred years later, the cowbell is a huge part of MS State's identity. When you attend a Mississippi State game, you'll be overwhelmed by the passion from the thousands of diehard fans and the ringing of cowbells. Now, on to Ole Miss. Mississippi University, better known as Ole Miss, is the other main college in Mississippi. Ole Miss sports a classic color combo of Red and Blue. Located in Oxford, Mississippi, Ole Miss has always been seen as a more sophisticated and wealthy university. A strikingly huge number of students who attend Ole Miss can be described as young white trust fund kids. Many of the students there come from families who are extremely wealthy and affluent. Oxford is an upper-middle-class/high-class city. The Grove, which is the tailgating area at Ole Miss, is the most gorgeous area I've ever had the pleasure of tailgating at. Though I'm a Mississippi State alumni, it's hard to deny how beautiful it truly is. The Grove is a vibrant sea of grass and nearly entirely shaded by tall trees. But just as Mississippi State fans despise Ole Miss fans, Ole Miss fans hate Mississippi State fans. Ole Miss fans think that Mississippi State fans are low-class, gross slobs who are complete idiots. But at the end of the day, they couldn't exist without each other. Their mutual hate fuels the 10th oldest rivalry in college football. The Egg Bowl is the college football rivalry game that takes place between Mississippi State and Ole Miss. Every year it seems that something improbable and outrageous happens. The hatred the two universities share for each other started almost a hundred years ago. In 1926, Ole Miss finally snapped Mississippi State's 13-year win streak over them. To celebrate this victory, Ole Miss fans stormed Mississippi State's field and attempted to tear down the goalposts. Of course, Mississippi State fans didn't take very kindly to this. Mississippi State fans used wooden chairs to defend the goalposts, and Ole Miss fans fought back. This caused a giant brawl between fans, with some players jumping in. It was madness. According to one account: "Irate Mississippi State supporters took after the ambitious Ole Miss group with cane bottom chairs, and huge fights broke out. The mayhem continued until most of the chairs were splintered. Several injuries were reported." In an effort to make peace the following year, both colleges created a golden egg trophy that the winner each year would take for their college. Now, fast forward to 2018. During a play that should've been called dead due to the ball being hiked after the 3rd quarter ended, Ole Miss QB threw a touchdown pass to A.J. Brown. Players on each team then started shoving each other, which then escalated into punches. This caused the benches to clear, where an all-out brawl started. It was pure pandemonium, and it was beautiful. In the end, 4 players were ejected (the refs actually ended up ejecting the wrong players, so the refs somehow managed to mess up twice in one play). Mississippi State went on to win 35-3. Now, on to last year, 2019. This year's Egg Bowl is now known as The Piss and The Miss. Basically, Mississippi State was ahead 21-14 with around 3 minutes left in the game. Ole Miss was on their own 10-yard line. They snapped the ball, and threw an interception! Except it didn't count, because MS State had called a timeout right before the snap, so the play was called dead. Eventually, Ole Miss converted on 4th down and ended up driving down the field. After numerous attempts and flags, Ole Miss is FINALLY able to score a touchdown with a Matt Corral 2 yard throw to Elijah Moore with four seconds left. Then, Elijah Moore did his touchdown celebration, which was him getting on all fours, and then lifting his leg to mimic him pissing like a dog on MS State's endzone, poking fun at how MS State are the Bulldogs. Due to unsportsmanlike behavior, Ole Miss got a 15-yard penalty that would be enforced on the extra point. So there are 4 seconds left on the clock, it's 21-20, and Ole Miss just has to kick the extra point to push the game into overtime and potentially win it, right? Wrong. The extra point went from being a 20-yard attempt to being a 35-yard attempt, which still isn't too bad. The Ole Miss kicker steps up and kicks it. But he shanks it hard to the right. Game ends. Final Score: Mississippi State 21, Ole Miss 20. The greatest ending to an Egg Bowl I've ever seen.
I remember being in a bar, watching this to the side while my friends all talked. Saw her hit the shot. Gasped. Turned to a friend who adores UConn and said "UConn women just lost."
Yes I adore UConn women too. My other friends all hate sports so there was no worry of public tarring. I also got to see Kemba play the year before they won the NCAA Tournament.
@@aespa690 Umm, plenty of people. It might shock you but the NCAA women and WNBA have supporters that watch games in bars. Besides that, I went to the bar with friends as part of a theatre after party and the game just happened to be on.
This is like that final moment taken from an 80's sports movie where the underdog has one last shot to defy the odds and win it all. Great rewind of a moment in history I otherwise would never have known happened since I'm not from the U.S. Keep up the good work!
Victoria Vivians was also elected Homecoming Queen at Mississippi State and looked stunning!! The lady Bulldogs also received an Espy Award for this game as well.
I was working my part time as a server when this shot happened. I was so enthralled with this game I switched sections to get off work earlier so I could watch the rest of the second half. And boy was it worth the extra $50 dollars in tips I missed out on.
Watching this game at home was more intense than some of the events I’ve seen live, including the Red Sox 2004 playoff comebacks and a Super Bowl. It’s stuff like this that makes sports awesome.
That was another amazing game that deserves a rewind! I remember watching with my best friend in his form and shouting down the Griffis hallway afterwards! Unfortunate for your sister but it was one of the best experiences for me until the UConn game!
It does suck that the best woman basketball player I've seen doesn't get to play out her senior season. Sabrina Ionescu was bringing some great attention to woman's basketball. However next year UConn will be back on top an woman's basketball will lack entertainment.
@@matthewdaley746 I'm trying to be positive because Oregon has recruited well. I just don't see Oregon ever getting a player like Sabrina again. While UConn got all the top players. The one year woman's basketball would have been exciting and it got cancelled. I'd almost guarantee UConn wins next year and the year after that and the year after that.
I am a Mississippi State alum and can tell you that I've never seen any Mississippi State women's basketball team play like this. Ever since coach Schaefer came to town, he's turned the whole mindset around for how good they can be. He's done extremely well at recruiting and he's taught them how to play. We may not have the greatest shooters, but we can play defense. I didn't think they had a chance vs. UConn that year but what a ride it was. Seeing Dak up in the house was also a thrill and a testament to how our athletes support each other in all sports. One of these days, one of our teams will win a national title and I'll put money on our women's basketball team before football or baseball. Praise the Lord and Go Dogs!
Hey Seth! Great video as always! For the next Rewinder how about Zidane at the 2006 World Cup final? Or the final corner drama of the 2008 Brazilian GP in F1?
As a Mississippi State fan, I still get chills when I hear Dave O'Brien call. I remember vivid where I was for the 2016 match up with State and UConn. I was laying in my hospital bed recovering from surgery and I knew the girls were going to lose, but I had to at least watch as UConn dismantled my university. I wasn't angry, sad, or apathetic. Fast forward to 2017, I watched almost all of State's games and I figured the team was good to make a solid run, but not a Final Four run. This game probably took a few years from my life, but the ups and downs were definitely worth it. Whatever you do SB Nation, please let's not talk about Notre Dame in 2018...
This happened pretty late on the east coast, like 11 pm-ish. My wife was already asleep. Morgan William hit that shot and I jumped up off my couch and yelled “AHHHHH!” I scared the hell out of my wife, she was super pissed, and I’ll never forget it.
“It’s March 11, 2020, we’re in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, as the OKC Thunder host the Utah Jazz on what would be a typical matchup in a tight western conference playoff race in the final quarter of the season.”
Morgan William in that NCAA tournament had some SERIOUS Damian Lillard vibes going on. Even when she wasn't making shots, you thought every shot was going in. That Mississippi State team would get run off the floor by South Carolina in the championship game. This upset is the women's basketball version of Duke vs undefeated UNLV in 1991.
Everytime the story was told and tv shuts off, I get this moment back in history feeling like back in '98 NBA Finals MJ game winning shot kinda feeling. Great job guys
As a huge U Conn fan, ouch. Beat Miss St by 60 a yr earlier. Couldn't believe it when Itty Bitty hit the shot over my Gabby. Miss St played great defense. One knock against U Conn is they don't like when teams play physical against them. I remember Dak going nuts in the stands.
@@zeaferjones1404 oh yeah I feel awful for y'all. As a Duke fan, we're losing some great seniors who could've had one more tourny, but... yeah. I'm really sorry for y'all.
@@matadler2378 Thank you, yeah Oregon will never have another Sabrina Ionescu. Its sad how much we supported the Oregon Woman's team in Eugene just for it to end this way. Other Oregon fans have pointed out that we have a great recruiting class coming but I think its the end of Oregon being a contender to win the NCAA tourney. I wish you guys luck Duke has had some great woman's basketball teams.
@@jadqn_ They won in 2019 and I give them credit for that. This year was Oregon's year. Be glad that your team's year didn't have a virus destroy the season. Although I'll admit even after the Iowa St loss I'm still more worried about Oregon playing Baylor than South Carolina.
@@jadqn_ A lot of fans overestimate their team after losing a superstar. Baylor is still great but losing Brown does hurt them. Just like Stanford losing Alana Smith really hurt them this year against Oregon. However, now Oregon is losing Sabrina and you won't see us as contenders for a while. So I'm claiming the virus year as our year.
And even more fitting, given the David and Goliath theme, that THE MOST David player on the court, heck, on either team, was the one that hit the game winning, streak-busting, dagger of a shot. Kudos, Morgan William, for never giving up!!!
Continuing my campaign for in the future y’all to cover D Rose’s 50 point game culminating with the block of the game tying shot. That single moment and post game interview never fails to make me cry and while recent deserves a rewind
2008 National Championship between Kansas and Memphis deserves a deep rewind. And The University of Kansas and South Carolina deserve to be the 2020 Men's and Women's National Champions respectively. The NCAA Basketball season is now over with the March Madness tournaments canceled and these are the top two ranked teams in the nation at the end of the season. Not the best way to win it, but in crowning champs at least the season wasn't a complete waste.
Can you please do a rewinder on the 2008 men's basketball championship game. Kansas vs. Memphis, aka Mario's Miracle. Please (also really good video as always Seth)

I'll take that bet if it's still available. Got my money on baseball 😏
At least Baylor would end up beating them in 2019.
This happened pretty late on the east coast, like 11 pm-ish. My wife was already asleep. Morgan William hit that shot and I jumped up off my couch and yelled “AHHHHH!” I scared the hell out of my wife, she was super pissed, and I’ll never forget it.
y'all did Lobo dirty with that still behind the desk
This upset still warms my heart till this day 😁 god I hate UConn
There are 50 states, 44 of them really hate UConn.
@clehooda northside They dominated their sport even more than the patriots did.
@clehooda northside UConn's been to 11 Championship Games, and, won them all.
@clehooda northside Plus, they had to win more than two games, too.
Matthew Daley yall hate Uconn because they’ve been dominant? doesn’t seem like a good reason
In 10 years we will have a Corona Virus rewind. 😉
We can have that in 2 years like some of these rewinds
lol check out the Worst NBA playoff series
If we make it (;
“It’s March 11, 2020, we’re in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, as the OKC Thunder host the Utah Jazz on what would be a typical matchup in a tight western conference playoff race in the final quarter of the season.”

SB Nation might be the best sports RUclips tbh
Call me Clutch Definetly better then the joke that is TPS lol
Morgan William in that NCAA tournament had some SERIOUS Damian Lillard vibes going on. Even when she wasn't making shots, you thought every shot was going in. That Mississippi State team would get run off the floor by South Carolina in the championship game. This upset is the women's basketball version of Duke vs undefeated UNLV in 1991.
Everytime the story was told and tv shuts off, I get this moment back in history feeling like back in '98 NBA Finals MJ game winning shot kinda feeling. Great job guys
Finally? A RUclips women’s basketball video where the comments section is actually RESPECTFUL?! HALLELUJAH!
UConn hasn’t been the same since. HailState!
You make Goliath collapsing somehow look like a bad thing.
Hail State! #Gulfport
@@92alpha13 Their quest fell short, but, it shall never be forgotten.
Sir, I have to agree with you
@@jondough7777777 Thanks, I think most of the country probably does, too.
Simple equation :
Rewinder + Basketball + Seth = Masterpiece
I'm a Uconn fan so I'm gonna sit this one out, but I'm a big fan of your videos.
I am from CT I did not want to be reminded of this thanks......
Getting ready for that rewind on Rudy Gobert touching all the microphones.
NCAAW is amazing and you're amazing for this video!
Its not so amazing for Oregon fans. We support our team and then our best chance at winning the title is canceled by a virus.
The greatest basketball game I’ve ever watched.
And now both tournaments are cancelled sad 😭
Let’s hear it for the short folks!!!! Thanks for the history lesson on the U of CT’s women’s team-didn’t know Geno A went that far back.
As someone who lives in Mississippi it’s really nice to be recognized by a sports network for not being garbage or mediocre
Just warms my heart!
Tha is for reminding me that there won't be any March Madness to watch this year.
Good thing we still have RUclips
The shot still give me chillz no cap
RIP March Madness for this year 😭
2020 National Champions Oregon Woman's Basketball!!!!!!
Zeafer Jones You spelled Baylor wrong lmao
Zeafer Jones Facts. I’m just kinda sad for March madness in general
Greatest underdog story in woman's sports HISTORY !
Greatest underdog story regardless of gender, not, very much question.
@@matthewdaley746 no , woman's sports , get your panties out of a bunch , its my opinion and obvi SB Nation liked it 🙏❤
@@dutchpackdior2178 Nice try, men never dominated like UConn dominated their sport.
@Michael Harvey If we lose to Finland, tiebreakers would mean no Medals.
@Michael Harvey Too many people forget that Russia wasn't the final game.
And even more fitting, given the David and Goliath theme, that THE MOST David player on the court, heck, on either team, was the one that hit the game winning, streak-busting, dagger of a shot. Kudos, Morgan William, for never giving up!!!
The shot by Arike Ogunbawlae should get a rewind too.
This was like legit the only women’s basketball game I ever enjoyed and it was crazy
I’m so happy you made a video about this game
Continuing my campaign for in the future y’all to cover D Rose’s 50 point game culminating with the block of the game tying shot. That single moment and post game interview never fails to make me cry and while recent deserves a rewind
Say what you will about women's sports but this was most certainly one of the most memorable games I have watched in a long time.
:(
i remember where i was when i watched this
stay safe, y'all
Coolquip43 you’re acting like this is the apocalypse lol
Loved this game
Still holding hope for a rewinder on the 2015-16 AFC title game. That'd be a great episode
I absolutely love rewinder!!!
Best Rewinder I’ve seen
Crazy how the day I watched this video back in March of 2020 that the pandemic would hit hard and the world would never be the same.
Michigan states punt block vs Michigan deserves a deep rewind PLEASE!!!!!
Hail State! I watched it live at American Airlines Center....it was remarkable
Hands down best women b-ball game I’ve watched
SB Nation, you did it again!!! Great video!!!
GOOSEBUMPS !!!!!!!
As a bigtime Uconn bandwagon who is in love with Katie Lou Samuelson, this moment killed me. The loss to Notre Dame in the Final four was bad too :(
My grandparents were at that game cheering for msu
Unparalleled greatness (2:46) "oh my godddddd"
this will be good because I dont actually know what will happen unlike most of the rewind videos
It's front-page news whenever UConn loses, glad your coma's over.
Matthew Daley I don’t watch women’s basketball
@@quinm Neither did I, until UConn finally stopped being completely invincible.
Please do a rewind for the 1983 NC State championship run. Quite literally the perfect story for this format
Great episode
You should do a rewinder on the 1985 Villanova wildcats and a beef history on Buddy Ryan vs Norman Braman
Money Mitch for what?
2008 National Championship between Kansas and Memphis deserves a deep rewind.
And The University of Kansas and South Carolina deserve to be the 2020 Men's and Women's National Champions respectively. The NCAA Basketball season is now over with the March Madness tournaments canceled and these are the top two ranked teams in the nation at the end of the season. Not the best way to win it, but in crowning champs at least the season wasn't a complete waste.
I 🤬 love this channel!
You guys gotta do a rewind on Dame Lillard's 2014 buzzer-beater against Houston to win the blazers their first playoff series in 14 years.
Can you please do a rewinder on the 2008 men's basketball championship game. Kansas vs. Memphis, aka Mario's Miracle. Please (also really good video as always Seth)
More like Calipari's Choke, with an assist from Derrick Rose.
I love the fact that this was released the day the actual tournaments were canceled.
2014 World Cup Final deserves a rewind.
Legendary!
HI SETH!!!!! You and will are my favs
