the fact we knew luis was going to hit it just a matter of where makes it even funnier how good he was that season....no one thought rivera was going to get him out with a strike....this is prime mariano and yankees at their peak and the d backs didn't even sneeze at them...because they were so much better that year and their dominance in their 3 wins proved how they easily could of won all 7 games
Fun fact: All four of Phoenix' pro sports teams were playing on November 4, 2001, the only time four pro teams from the same city were active on the same day. (The D-Backs were the only team that won; the Suns lost to Houston, the Cardinals lost to the Eagles, and the Coyotes lost to Carolina.)
Crazy stat, especially since it could only be possible in October-Early November! AND, there's only a hanful of baseball teams left at that point... AND, it would MOST LIKELY need to be on a Sunday!
Tim McCarver, the color commentator for this game, predicted the game winning hit. He said that he didn’t agree with pulling the infield in, because Rivera is exceptional at jamming hitters which causes bloopers and flare hits because they hit it off the hands. Sure enough, Gonzalez puts a blooper over the infield.
my favorite thing about this is that McCarver is most known for his gaffes, but he could also be scary dead on sometimes. And like in this case when he was, it can be just as wonderful as his funniest gaffes.
I am in the small minority that loved McCarver. And he did that more than once. I distinctly remember the 1988 NLCS when he called Gary Carter's GW single in Game 1, saying the Dodgers were playing deep against the Carter of five years prior...then he hits a shallow single that John Shelby catches at normal depth. Never understood why he got so much flak. And when you see guys like Harold Reynolds and John Smoltz in comparison, it's not even close.
McCarver may come across a bit senile in the booth sometimes, but his baseball knowledge and sense for the game is off the charts. This should be a surprise to no one, given the man caught Bob Gibson and backstopped two Cardinals championship teams over a 21 career.
Manu Ginobilis Bald Spot Reynolds was a disaster--that's why he only lasted two years. Smoltz is getting there. He's a smart guy with a lot of insight, but his perspective as a pitcher is always going to be very specific and won't see as many different angles as a catcher will. I was a McCarver fan too, though I do think he was better as a team with Al Michaels and Jim Palmer in the '80's than he was with Joe Buck.

No, we lost to LSU on a final throw from Jamarcus Russell. We had that game won but a fumble by Keegan Herring on the one yard line to go up ahead even more then our defense gave up a 4th down play where Early Doucet didn't catch the ball in the end zone but the refs called it a touchdown was the Russell throw, a game in which we gave up a blocked field goal for a touchdown and a blocked punt for a touchdown. Isn't it? It was the last series with Paul O'Neill. Only Game 6 was poorly played by either of the teams. Even the so-called mistakes by Kim and Brenley for leaving Kim in the game weren't really mistakes. I'm a huge Red Sox fan by the way.
Keith Kevelson hell yea, and the fact that they climbed from wildcard against SF and the Cubs (let’s not forget the game 5 8th inning curse striking the cubs to throw the game) and then to go all the way and beat the yankees in their prime with mostly rookies on the team. That was absolutely wild. And even the AL side with the yankees climb was insane cause of the boston series
Reflecting back on this as a 4th generation Arizonan this championship will probably always be my favorite, especially considering we don't look like we're winning another one soon in any sport. My dad passed away from cancer in January 2022, my uncle (dad's younger brother) passed away from cancer in July 2021, and my grandfather passed away from cancer December 2006. It's the one and only championship we all got to experience together. The Suns winning would have meant more as Phoenix, and Arizona in general, is a Suns town but this still meant a lot.
@@midnytemassacre yeah, we got hot for two weeks, beat a much better Dodgers team but now we're coming back down to earth and the Phillies are just better. Beating the Dodgers was fun though.
As a mets fan in 2001 everyone said root for the Yankees. Needless to say I had the biggest smile on my mouth when they lost game 7. I’ll never forget that series
This is by far my favorite World Series of all time. 2001 was just an amazing year for all professional sports. Even Nascar was amazing in 2001. Despite losing Earnhardt in the Daytona 500, 2001 had 19 different race winners, and 5 of those were 1st time winners.
Most boring 💤 postseason in the history of baseball. Nothing happened in that World Series or in the two series before. Top 3 worst postseasons in the history of the sport.
Man I’m a Yankee fan, but this series was unbelievable. Games 4,5, and of course 7 are easily baseball classics. Three legendary games in one WS. Diamondbacks comeback off Mariano Rivera is legendary stuff.
I’ll never forget this game. I was 11, a huge Diamondbacks fan and barely breathed the whole 9th inning. I remember jumping up and down and tearing up when Gonzalez hit that little bloop single. Definitely my favorite sports memory of all time
Thank you so much for making this video. I was at Game 1 and Game 7. I’ve tried on many occasions (and failed) to describe exactly what it was like, and this communicates it perfectly.
To this day, this World Series (2001) is my favourite one all time. So much drama & excitement in all games 1 thru 7. Then you factor in the events of 9/11. It was so surreal. I remember it like it was yesterday.
This was one of the greatest moments in WS history. I was fortunate enough to be at game 2 with RJ throwing a 3 hit comlete game shutout. Even now 17 years later it gives me chills. Thanks for doing this momentand keep it up! Rewind rocks!
I just turned 20, same with the Diamondbacks who just finished their 20th season. I've lived in Arizona my entire life and will always and forever be a D backs fan. I remembered this as a 3 year old, vaguely, but I did. It's something I'll never forget
That world series is a CLASSIC. Such a classic. 9/11 happening before that, Yankees were actually the fan favorites. But I mean either way, sheesh. even tho corporate America loved the nationalist push, Yankees were the fan favs probably to the masses (can't tell). But damn, 4 In a row? I'd have hated that. Thank you Arizona 🙏🏽
I think the added twist of craig counsel (the nerdy white shrimp formerly of the expansion marlins winning the 97 world series at home in game 7) being the winning run again in a home game 7 to break up the Yankees titles from 1996-2001 is another nice addition to this steamy pot..the dude ironically helped 2 expansion teams in their first playoffs win a game 7 of the world series by getting on base in the 9th inning of a close game inbetween the Yankees domination ending their title streak...the dude with that awkward unique high swing that looks like the opposite of a player and more like a geeky cubs fan or cliché main character of a sports movie..i find that funny
The first out of the 9th, the Diamondbacks brought in a Pinch Hitter bunting specialist in Jay Bell, who has the (post-depression) NL record for Sacrifice bunts in a season. Only he had a terrible bunt to get the guy at third out easily (the runners on 1st and 2nd bunt is hard to do). That is why Bell scored the series winning run.
The best moment in AZ sports history. Didn't go to the game, but watched it in Tempe. AZ is known for being a state of transients, but all night long, until 2, or 3, celebrations were all over the valley and cars all over the city were nonstop blowing their horns until 3 am
The last 3:30 of that game 7 are complete garbage. Brick after brick for a combined 3 points. The best player on the planet(LBJ in case there's any confusion) shits the bed.

I’m neither a Yankee fan or a Diamondback fan but I got chills when Luis hit that walk off single. Please upload more content of this nature. This video was the best I’ve watch in awhile. A perfect build up to that climax 👍🏼
I was 9. Crowded around the small TV with my parents and sister, screaming at the top of our lungs during this inning. Still get goosebumps all over thinking about that inning. And that moment. Watching this unfold with my family.
How great would it be if MLB somehow remastered the broadcast footage of the game seven walk-off hit so we could what it would have looked and sounded like if it happened like in 2017.
I couldn't tell you just how happy I was to see Arizona beat NY in this game, especially with the walk off. The media were slobbering all over the Yankees and so many people wanted Arizona to win so badly.
Greatest moment in Arizona sports history, though that list of greatest moments is not very long unfortunately. It’s mostly been pain and misery for us in Phoenix.
This would be a great episode! Boise State coming out of no where to play Oklahoma in a game absolutely no one thought they could win. Only to use every trick play *perfectly* to get a lead, lose it spectacularly to the Sooners, and come back once again. That Statue of Liberty play to win it would be perfect for a moment in history.
Looking back on this series, I'm sure most of America were rooting for the Yankees to win in the short aftermath of 9/11 and all the symbolism that would come with it, but truthfully, Arizona was just the better team. 3 of there 4 victories were convincing if not blowouts. The Yankees won all 3 of there games at home in absolute nail biters in each that came down to last inning blown saves by Arizona. The Diamondbacks deserved this WS.
NLDS 2007: Rockies win 21 of 22 for WC, face rival D-Backs, Eric Byrnes controversy, give Todd Helton the longtime face of the franchise his first shot at the WS.
We needed that series. As a country, but as New York City especially. We didn't get it; they beat us fair and square. But I was home and in attendance for those two game saving homers from Brosius and Jeter. Both games. There were as many people bawling as screaming and high fiving. Just the release - something to be happy about. I was doing both at times. What this series did for New York in its darkest hour...still. This was probably the most exciting World Series I've seen to date.
I really love the rewind series, because most of the stuff I've never seen since I'm from Germany and you guys build up the suspens so well, thanks for that and keep up the good work
These videos are awesome! A good one for Canadian fans would be the 2010 Olympic Hockey final. Canada had never won olympic gold at home and then in 2010 they only needed to win the hockey final, the last event, to win 14 golds which would be a winter olympic record. The final was against the rival Americans who beat Canada in an earlier round. The game went into OT in dramatic fashion. Seeing as Canadian NHL teams havent won the Stanley cup in decades, it was easily the best hockey game Canadian fans have gotten to enjoy in my lifetime.

If they're willing to go back far enough the the Leafs Stanley Cup win in 1962/the discovery of Bill Barilko is probably the best story in hockey history. Paul Henderson's summit series goal in 1972 REALLY REALLY needs a deep rewind.

I’m a Yankees fan but goddamn his series is good
Isn't it? It was the last series with Paul O'Neill. Only Game 6 was poorly played by either of the teams. Even the so-called mistakes by Kim and Brenley for leaving Kim in the game weren't really mistakes. I'm a huge Red Sox fan by the way.
I’m waiting on the marlins 2003 run
The 2003 Marlins were a great team. Juan Pierre, Mike Lowell, Dontrelle Willis, Josh Beckett, etc.
Keith Kevelson tbh I’d be happy with a 97 marlins coverage cause that was against the super strong Indians but the climb there wasn’t as eventful
I’m sorry about your family. I’m glad that you all got to have this championship at least.
Helluva run for Dbacks this year!! Doesn't look like they can match Phillies energy, though.
@@midnytemassacre yeah, we got hot for two weeks, beat a much better Dodgers team but now we're coming back down to earth and the Phillies are just better. Beating the Dodgers was fun though.

First World Series I ever saw. Got me hooked on baseball. Pretty emotional ending. Thanks for this rewind.

As an AZ sports fan whenever I’m depressed I just watch the ending to this game.
As a mets fan in 2001 everyone said root for the Yankees. Needless to say I had the biggest smile on my mouth when they lost game 7. I’ll never forget that series

Growing up in AZ, you didna great job summarizing everything ive spent my whole life learnin bout our sport history. Great vid
This is by far my favorite World Series of all time. 2001 was just an amazing year for all professional sports. Even Nascar was amazing in 2001. Despite losing Earnhardt in the Daytona 500, 2001 had 19 different race winners, and 5 of those were 1st time winners.
Rockies vs Padres 2007 Wild Card game. Holliday game winning slide.
Most boring 💤 postseason in the history of baseball. Nothing happened in that World Series or in the two series before. Top 3 worst postseasons in the history of the sport.
As a padres fan, don't remind me 😔
2005 playoffs were amazing.
Holliday never touched home plate either.
Game 163 actually but it amounts to the same thing
Man I’m a Yankee fan, but this series was unbelievable. Games 4,5, and of course 7 are easily baseball classics. Three legendary games in one WS. Diamondbacks comeback off Mariano Rivera is legendary stuff.
The Yankees gave up 24 runs in 2 games....they clearly were not the better team...let's be honest...
@@razkablehe never said they were
This was nothing short of a masterpiece. Trip down baseball-watching memory lane. Thank you SB for this. 👏
Lucky! One of bucket list items as a sports fan is to go to a playoff game for any one of my favorite teams (49ers, Giants, and/or Sharks).
I remember watching this game when I was 11. gave me goosebumps then, and it still does now. A legendary game.

Look at 2:10 (1949-1953)
I think the added twist of craig counsel (the nerdy white shrimp formerly of the expansion marlins winning the 97 world series at home in game 7) being the winning run again in a home game 7 to break up the Yankees titles from 1996-2001 is another nice addition to this steamy pot..the dude ironically helped 2 expansion teams in their first playoffs win a game 7 of the world series by getting on base in the 9th inning of a close game inbetween the Yankees domination ending their title streak...the dude with that awkward unique high swing that looks like the opposite of a player and more like a geeky cubs fan or cliché main character of a sports movie..i find that funny
Did the extra support for the Yankees carry over into the 2002 season or were they back to being hated by then?
I'd love to see the 2010 men's hockey Olympic gold medal game. There is a lot to unpack. Sincerely all of Canada.
I suggested that as well ☺
The first out of the 9th, the Diamondbacks brought in a Pinch Hitter bunting specialist in Jay Bell, who has the (post-depression) NL record for Sacrifice bunts in a season. Only he had a terrible bunt to get the guy at third out easily (the runners on 1st and 2nd bunt is hard to do). That is why Bell scored the series winning run.

I really love the rewind series, because most of the stuff I've never seen since I'm from Germany and you guys build up the suspens so well, thanks for that and keep up the good work
This was unbelievable. The pinnacle of American sports.
