What you may not realize is, though they were called The Three Stooges, it was not always the same actors. Throughout their filmography, there were many changes and change backs in the cast. In the 190 films, the stooges were played by six different actors.
This video will examine how each of The Three Stooge actors died.
Moe Howard was the first member of The Three Stooges. He started as a heckler on the Tom Healy show. This bowl-cut buffoon had such success in the role that he brought his brother Shemp on board. As a founding member, Moe stayed with the team throughout their entire 50-year run.
Larry Fine was the second major member of the team. Larry fell into the natural position as the straight man. He would act as the go-between and sometimes the voice of reason for the bickering brothers. Larry was also stuck with the group until his death.
Though Moe, Larry, and Shemp were the original members, others joined. Joe Besser, Joe DeRita, and Curly Howard. Played parts. Health issues and deaths of team members kept the cast in the constant shuffle over the years.
However, no matter who was on the squad, they always offered their signature comedic style that lasted decades.
These were the lives and deaths of the six men who took a turn as a member in this outfit. Each of their contributions was memorable in the legacy of one of the greatest comedy troupes of all time-- The Three Stooges.

The fact that we're still talking about them some 90 years after the first "Three Stooges" short came out is proof of how timeless their comedy is. My son is 20 now and we've spent an awful lot of time together over the last 15 years or so watching the Stooges and laughing like maniacs...

@@jamestuccillo Kudos to you for keeping the tradition going. It’s a wonder growing up that my brother and I didn’t put each other in the hospital “stooging” on each other. Great memories! We still laugh about how we slapped each other around like Moe did Curly, Larry and Shemp.
I was born in 96 and grew up watching them! The most definitely aren’t forgotten! Legends!!

There is no contest. Curly was in a class by himself. His antics and natural comedic instincts made him one of the funniest men in comedy. He is an original.
They each individually were one of a kind, it's hard to pick out a favorite
I like Curly too 😉cheers!
Moe for his hair
~ I have always liked Shemp the most. No disrespect to Curly, I just think the Shemp episodes were better made, and as weird as he was, Shemp had a singular style that set him apart.
I always liked Larry best. While the talents of Moe and Curly are obvious, Larry had this air of the common man being assaulted by the slings and arrows of life in the 20th century that hit home. But, really, it's the synergy of the ensemble that is the best character.
My childhood was made that much more memorable and happy from the countless hours the stooges provided me with their wit and slapstick humor. All my close friends have the same memories making it even more special.
Curly was way ahead of comedy he was in a class by himself. Tragically we lost him way to early. RIP Stooges.

Larry was the most underrated of the Stooges. The side of his face was callused from the many slaps that he received. He was also a hero. When he lived in Philadelphia he saved a child from a fire.
Larry is the worst of the stooges in my opinion but without him they wouldn’t be the three stooges he’s irreplaceable
@@Anon-lu6ct Larry gave the stooges that Balance... he was the GLUE that made it all work
@@Anon-lu6ct No way, Larry’s one liners crack me up good sometimes, but I agree with you
Larry's damaged cheek was the reason Besser didn't want slaps. Eye pokes, head-raps, and belly punches were still ok with him. No one took pain better than Larry. He always had an anguished look when his hair was pulled-out, his head has planed... In short, his mugging was hilarious. Larry sometimes had to turn from the camera when Shemp did his schtick- watch the scene when Shemp poses as a dentist and yanks a man's tooth- Larry breaks-up.
I liked Moe, Curly and Larry as my favorite line-up. I do agree that Larry was the glue that enabled much of the comedy to work out. I thought Larry was very funny indeed, but nobody could be as funny as Curly in my opinion. Theses 3 stooges & Shemp were all very good at bringing laughter, God bless their souls!
I didn't appreciate Shemp until I was older I didn't realize how funny he was because I didn't like Curly being replaced

I remember watching the three stooges with my mom and brother late Saturday nights... probably back in the very early 80's, it was a weekly thing for us. I used to so look forward to it.. Right on! Which episode of the Three Stooges appealed to you the most?
I loved the Stooges growing up, and I still do. One of the few shows I can watch a million times and never get tired of them. I feel like they get a bum rap as just being slapstick comedy, because that's just the surface humor. Underneath, there are a lot of puns, gags, double entendres and other smart humor to appreciate.
We're glad to see another Stooges fan! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. What other types of videos would you like to see?
Agree completely. The layers underneath the obvious slapstick are what makes them appealing to all ages. I remember watching as a child with my dad and there was a reference to a character Baron of Graymatter. I didn't understand why my dad laughed at that and then he explained it meant 'brainless' as in barren of grey matter( brains).
I have fond memories of my dad when I see the Stooges.

One of the highlights of my dearly departed dad’s life was being born with a hole in his heart. See, this led to him being one of the first children in the country to undergo open heart surgery in Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital. There he got to meet Larry, Moe and Shemp. He told us that story a thousand times.

I still watch them every Saturday.
They are always painted as tragic characters. They really had pretty good lives especially compared to a lot of people back then.
Watched as a kid in the 50s not realizing many of them had already passed away.
it's also a tragedy that during the 30's and 40's at least when they were in their prime they didn't jack shit they got paid awful. and the only one who was good at keeping the books and who was able to give money to anyone is Moe Howard he kept all the books and he was the only one who did well for himself because he didn't go out and spend all his money like everyone else did. the studio if i recall kept it secret how famous the guys actually were when they never paid any attention so they got away with paying the so little if my memory is right.

Ya Moe was like a real guy. Mean but growing up in 50s lots of mean guys
Moe was relatable.
Shemp Howard was an original and funny stooge who later went on to a successful solo career, but had a noble attitude in leaving his solo career and returning to the three stooges as his brother Curly got sick helping his other brother Moe and their friend Larry to keep their jobs and also to help cover brother Curly's hospital expenses.
It's an admirable attitude indeed!
When Curly was no longer able to be a part of the show, Moe pleaded with Shemp to return until Curly was feeling better. But sadly, Curly passed away in 1950 and Shemp remained as the permanent replacement for Curly. At least until Shemp passed away in 1955 at 60 years old.

physical comedy they will feel as they meet the end of my blade
I thought Shemp was underrated. His facial expressions cracked me up. Also the way his hair would fly around when he was slapped by Moe.
Shemp was very underrated. He had so many great punchlines. That's why he will always be my favorite Stooge.
I really liked Shemp, as when he replaced Curly, he did his own sense of humour. My favorite would be Larry. He wasn't too silly.
Shemp was my mother's boy
I LOVED THE WAY THEY DID THE 3D VERSIONS WITH SHEMP AND THEY WOULD BE THROWING THE PIES, KITCHEN UTENSILS AND OTHER PAINFUL OBJECTS AT THE CAMERA AND IT WOULD LOOK LIKE WE WERE ABOUT TO GET HIT WITH THEM BUT IT HIT THEM! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I agree 100%. The Shemp episodes are my favorite. He was hilarious.
Moe, curly, Larry and shemp were all my favorites. There will never be a better comedic act.
I like the way you give all the pertinent facts -- ages, years of birth and death, that way I didn't have to back figure them. I watch these guys a lot as a kid during the 50s and early 60s, both their current and past stuff. They have the type of humor that makes me laugh the most.
I didn't really watch 3 Stooges much growing up in the 90s, but some of my favorite memories with the show was during some 2-3 week hospital visits, one of the janitors would come into my room and sit with me for a little while and watch the show after he finished cleaning. One of the highlights of my day, and favorite hospital staff members ever, going above and beyond doing what he can to made the kids happy. He would surprise me with stuff from events going on downstairs, get me involved in Bingo, or sneak me McDonalds when he got off work. Stooges themselves may not be a big thing for me, but it really does bring up some good memories. I should really go back and watch it again sometime.
Everyone has their own way of looking at things. To me The Three Stooges are immortal. They live on through timeless comedy.
They were the original "jack asses"
They may get close some day. But there will never be a comedy team just like them ever again. I spent a lot of my childhood laughing because of them.
They never get old or stale. It holds up as well today as it did when the episodes aired. Not many films can say that. Clearly way ahead of their time.
They are ingrained in pop culture. They are legends that will never be forgotten
Now these guys were funny! RIP to these Legends.
For me curly was the famous stooge I loved
They were the BEST of the BEST! RIP my beloved three Stooges...
@Chris Hamilton Interesting subject. I agree with you on we are spirits experiencing human life. All things considered, I don't think most people go to hell, but the ones have been evil. The ones who have caused a lot of damage, sorrow, distress, and suffering. There are still a lot of good people who deserve a second chance and, consequently, come back and do better 'cause they keep experiences and abilities developed in their first life. Won't you agree?
This video is completely wrong. Curly died by being whacked in the face with an ironing board as Moe stuck his fingers in Curly's nose. Larry died when Curly shot an arrow out of a toaster that hit Larry in the face; Curly was standing on Larry's head at the time. Moe is immortal.
Amen to that!!
Shemp and curly were by far the best stooges . the two that came after Shemp and curly i never cared for ., they should have retired the act , you cant improve on perfection .

I used to like them when I was much younger but cannot tolerate them now. They are more like a parody of a comedy team and a bad one at that. They can't compare to real comedy teams like the Marx Brothers, Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello etc. Also they couldn't match the single performers such as W.C. Fields, Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and many others. Moe was the worst with his physical abuse and Curly was over-rated in my opinion. Slapstick might be ok in small doses but they overdid it but what irritates me the most are the accidental mishaps. They can't go 5 seconds without bumping into each other or walking into a wall etc. Really? What I did like about their films were some of the supporting actors.
That show will always hold a special place in my memory as I'd watch it with my grandfather after school. Always had him in hysterics.
I enjoyed watching and listening to Curly Howard so much as part of the three stooges! What a pity that he passed away in 1952 at the age of 48.
He likely would have lived longer. He had very high blood pressure and we didn’t have oral antihypertensive medications back then. Hydralazine was one of the first to be introduced in 1953. He apparently lived excessively, like so many back then with alcohol and nicotine. Coupled with hypertension, he was doomed. It’s crazy to think president Roosevelt was given a clean bill of health with a BP of 220/120. He died a few years laster. Having high blood pressure back before the 50s was a death sentence for many.
True story, I took care of Larry in the nursing home he was in for a few years when I was working as an agency CNA. I had no idea he was one of the stooges till about a few weeks before he passed away. Coolest thing I've done in my life so far

I am 63 years old and I still watch the Three Stooges. I love them! My favorite group is Moe Howard, Curly Howard and Larry Fine. The others did well, but those were and will always be my favoriies!
I'm 68 I was happy watchin the 3 stooges they were great guys...I still watch them now... sorry that they all have passed all six of them they were the funniest guys God bless them all....thank u for all my years watching u guys make me laugh hysterical
Curley and Shemp were the most silly and laughable - but none of it would have worked without Moe; He (Moe) was definitely the catalyst that made it all work.
We agree, TyroneSayWTF!
Agree with you very much. However, after Curly and Shemp passed away, the act wasn't very good anymore and the two replacement guys used just simply didn't fit in at all. Moses Howard wanted really bad and tried very hard to get Dudly Dickerson to be a third Stooge, and it would have worked and it would have kept these guys going, however Hollywood wouldn't permit Moe to have Dudley Dickerson as a third Stooge. Probably, out of pure speculation, because at that time the Amos and Andy show was considered by the colored folks out there as a slap in the face making people think that people of color are dumb and stupid, and were not to be taken seriously and that they were viewed as nothing but Uncle Tom's. So, the restriction of having Dudley Dickerson as a third Stooge was something that would be unwanted controversy, and cause protests and riots.
Agreed
Absolutely
Sorry for this 2nd comment, but when I was a new RN, I was assigned to caring for a young man who was shot by police after an armed robbery. He had been admitted after surgery and my coworkers said that he was nasty and that he'd make mincemeat of me. I went to see him first. He was very quiet. He wanted the TV on. The Three Stooges was on. In seconds, we were both laughing hard! 🤣 We talked about our favorite episodes and we had the same favorite. For the rest of the day, when it was time to change his dressings and give him meds, we would talk and laugh about the Stooges.
It was sad when he was discharged straight to the police and to the county jail to await trial. He was very young and ran with a violent crowd. He thanked me for treating him just like other people and saw his humanity. He promised me that he'd get out of the gang life after serving his sentence. I don't know if he made good on his promise, but I hope so.
I'm sorry to say but I don't think so because most gangs I know of act alot like the mafia does once you join it's for life some have left but not easily because there not about to let anyone squeal on them🤔
As long as he still watching the Three Stooges, you’re good right? His true humanity will be seen during his next attempt at arm robbery. Hopefully, no one that you know we love will be killed during that event.
Anyone can change, anyone can TRUST ME. I know for a fact.
@@newlifeforgodtruth2521 it's true anyone can change if they really want to the problem is to many are to comfortable with there life the way it is and refused to change their own actions(life)and they refuse to listen to anything or anyone else but themselves🤔

Born in 1991, watching the 3 stooges still here in 2022 and they make me laugh. Crazy to think in the next 10 years they’re about to be 100 years old and still are relevant. Truly amazing
The Power Of Pure Influence!
1922, not 1932
My uncle introduced me to the Stooges, ever since then I would watch it with him whenever I'd spend the night at his house, and also with my parents on Saturday mornings lol. Still love the stooges ❤️
@Hello there, how are you doing this blessed day?
to find out Moe took care of curly after he fell ill. shows how close they were.
I'm 47 and I still love watching these guys. I got my 2 daughters started on them early on and they enjoy their skits. True classic comedy.
Thanks for watching, Old man 74!
I still watch the Three Stooges to this day Mo was always my favorite I sure miss those guys they were really funny thank you guys for doing this of the three stooges .
Some of the best tv shows from my childhood! I still love them whenever I can find them on reruns!
We're happy to know that you love the Three Stooges! Which episode appealed to you the most?
First, Moe (born in 1897) died at 77 years old in 1975, not 1977. Second, Curly only had one cameo, a sleeping passenger on the train in Hold That Lion, the only Stooges short that all three Howard brothers were in together. Curly did film one other cameo, as a cook in Malice in the Palace, but it went unused because of how frail he looked. Larry wound up playing the cook. Further, Moe tried to keep the act going after Larry was paralyzed by a stroke and with Larry's blessing recruited Emil Sitka, who acted in 40 of the Stooges shorts, to play the Stooge role of "Harry" who was Larry's brother. There were even a few promotional pictures take of Moe, Emil as Harry and Curly Joe as the Three Stooges, but Moe's health issues kept that version of the Stooges ever appearing on film.
Thank you for that info!
And on Emil Sitka's tombstone is one of his famous lines "Hold Hands You Love Birds."
You are correct Steve. As soon as I heard that Moe died in 1977, I knew the person who created this video didn't do their work. So I stopped watching. And a thumbs down.
Steve. You are perfectly correct. Larry fine had a sit down talk at Loara high school in Anaheim in 1975. Moe had already passed. And at the time, Larry was the only member who was still living. Yes I realize curly Joe was in the 90s, but I don’t even consider him one of the group
@@bobegan2121 Larry passed before Moe. Larry died in January of 1975, while Moe died in May of the same year.
Moe, Shemp and Curly Howard were undoubtedly three of the funniest comedians to be put on celluloid but for me the most important member of the Stooges was Larry Fine. He brought his finely (pun intended ) tuned calmness and always unsuccessful attempts at reasonableness as an essential counterpoint to the full on mayhem swirling around him.But in the end The Three Stooges were one of the greatest comedy teams in Show Biz and I loves 'em all.
Thank you for sharing!! I used to watch them!!
You are so welcome! We're so glad you enjoyed this video. What other types of videos would you like to see?
Wow, I never new much of what was told in this short documentary of the the Three Stooges. Great video for sure 👍🏾👍🏾
Thank you kindly! Be on the lookout for our next video!
Respect from a Millennial, these guys were the greatest and will never be equaled. RIP
Thanks Youngblood! They were the best.
I respect that.
My brother was a great Stooges fan. He collected all their memorabilia. May he rest in peace. Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk.
Curly was my favorite. As a child he reminded me of a baby. He was hilarious. My cousins and I always played The Three Stooges whenever we got together. We spent a lot of time on the ground laughing so hard, it's amazing no one wet their pants.😂🤣❤
One of our favorites too, you've got taste! What other types of video would you like to see?
We were just a few years from losing Moe, and he's obviously slowed down at that point, but his appearance on The Mike Douglas Show should be required viewing (and you can find it here on YT). Be sure to catch when Mrs. Howard makes an appearance. Moe will forever be my favorite, and I'm told that, as a youngster, I would hit back and say "Why you!" when reprimanded for something. Today, that's a badge of honor, as I know where I got it.
I agree Moe was real, he made the whole show real
i used to love watching moe, larry and curly. sad they're all gone now. 😢
And don’t forget the disclaimer “don’t try this at home, kids”. Lol
Years from now they will still be funny.
Moe, Larry, Curly, truly timeless.

Legends! 🙂👍
216 virgins?
I still watch them every time there on TV. Curly was my favorite. Still the best comedy team ever. They even made it on the mad, mad, mad, mad World as the firemen. I think they bring me back to a better time , a youthful time in my life.
They had a lot of really good people in that movie and I'm glad they give the Stooges that cameo as a way to honor their work. Ditto the scene with Buster Keaton as well as others too.
So many funny scenes in that great comedy. My favorite has to be when Jonathan Winters destroyed the gas station.
They soitenly put many smiles on my face over the years!
Their comedy is timeless. I used to get my dad to go to the movies on saturday nite to see a double feature and a three stooges short on the big screen. A fan forever.
Thank you so much for your beautiful message for the Three Stooges! Which episode is the most memorable for you?
Huge part of my childhood. Curly was an absolute legend. Never failed to make me laugh😍😀😭❤
Larry was truly underrated, he was the glue that held the two ends together 👍
I heard a comedian once say that Larry was like wrestling referees, he didnt really do anything but it wouldnt be the same without him lol.
They all had their good points, except maybe for Besser.
In Brideless Groom, when Larry gets slugged by two fists at once, from the phone booth, his expression just cracks me up. 😂 Ditto re. Dunked in the Deep and Commotion on the Ocean, when Larry gets KO'd by the pulley.
I always liked the way Moe would grab Larry by his hair and end up with a handful of it after.
He reacted to things
@@supergoober1021 Stone Age Romeos. Moe: She loves me , She loves me not , ....
started watching the 3 stooges in the early 90s i always remember waking up early on the weekends to catch them on at 5 am for a couple hours. have there vhs and remastered dvds and 1 movie, 3 stooges meet hercules
Boy, these guys kept me company for many years. Aloha from Honolulu, Hawaii byways of Waikiki
Without question Curly was the jewell of the legacy and quality of the trio.
“Woob, woob, woob, woob…..” simply spectacularly hilarious 😂
The underrated stooge is Shemp but he was also excellent along with his funny expressions and his fun fight dance.
Thanks for watching!
Shemp had the moves thats for sure
Shemp was seriously neurotic and had trouble performing
Shemp Howard was an original and funny stooge who later went on to a successful solo career, but had a noble attitude in leaving his solo career and returning to the three stooges as his brother Curly got sick helping his other brother Moe and their friend Larry to keep their jobs and also to help cover brother Curly's hospital expenses.
My dad turned me and my brothers on to the Three Stooges. Though I never cared for Shemp, he grew on me after awhile, especially finding out he preceded Curly ... I absolutely enjoyed this history of the whole troup...still a huge fan and hope my son and grand kids will discover them as well...I give this a 5 star !!
I STILL WATCH THEM EVERY SATURDAY ON METV AT 6PM EST. AFTER ALL THESE YEARS. I REMEMBER AS A KID COMING HOME AND WATCHING THEM AFTER SCHOOL, AND THEN CARTOONS, BEFORE DOING MY HOMEWORK. THOSE WERE THE GOOD OLE DAYS.
Born 82 grew up watching shows like this and its amazing that even with my extremely bad memory this stuff helps me remember simpler times
We're happy to know that you love the show. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. If we may ask, which episode did you like the best?
"Do you think their style of comedy is timeless?" Let's see. You've seen the bit 1,000 times. You know exactly what they're gonna say & how they're gonna say it. Yet, you still laugh out loud at the punch line. Yup, it's timeless.

I'm 65 years old & you & most (if not all) of your dull friends are the very first I've come across in 65 years that don't think the stooges are funny. They don't keep playing your shit on TV for 60 /70 years uninterrupted if you aren't funny
"Unfortunately all six actors who took on the mantle have passed away" you made it sound like there was a chance they could still be alive that would be impressive considering Moe Howard would be 124 years old.
😂😂
Yeah, but Curly Joe DeRita would only be 112...
I would totally have the Howard Brothers and Larry live to this very day if it were within my power! That mysterious longevity would be comedic.
I remember racing home from school in the early 60's to watch the Stooges on TV. They were on at 3.45 or so & i used to just sit & watch. I loved each episode and had no favourite as they were all as good as each other. BUT the introduction of Curly Joe just didnt quite cut it. About 30 years ago there was a song called The Curly Shuffle & it brought back many memories of these fabulous actors.
