The Three Stooges may not be a part of the modern American cultural zeitgeist, but they sure were relevant for the bulk of the 20th century. The vaudeville and comedy team were active from 1922 to 1970. Their unique brand of slapstick humor was featured in 190 short subject films produced by Columbia Pictures.
Throughout that epic 5-decade run, six actors portrayed the Stooges, although only three were active at any given moment. Moe Howard and Larry Fine were mainstays throughout the comedy trio's history. The third Stooge would initially be played by Shemp Howard, then later Curly Howard.
After Curly, Shemp Howard would take another turn as a Stooge before Joe Besser was called in to replace him. Besser was by far the least popular actor to ever hold the Stooge title. The sixth and final Stooge was Joe 'Curly Joe' DeRita who replaced Besser for a new series and feature-length film.
Several attempts have been made to revive The Three Stooges franchise in the last several decades - the most notable reboot of the once beloved franchise being the Farrely brother's 2012 Three Stooges film. While that film was considered to be a box office success and a sequel is rumored to be in the works, fans of The Three Stooges don't consider it to be canon. As such, we're not going to consider the actors who played the title characters in that film as being official 'Stooges'.
In this video, we're going to be discussing the actors who played the Three Stooges' significant others. Join Facts Verse as we take some time to look at the astonishing real-life wives of what just might be the most iconic and influential comedy trio of all time.

I am 84 years old and loved the STOOGES. I was raised in a state home in Mass. They took us in just for the money, and we felt it. As kids we were admonished for enjoying the Stooges .When we tried to mimic the Stooges we were threatened with a back hand for acting stupid or like the Stooges. I enjoyed the Stooges long after they passed. Thanks for sharing theses great actors. I served in Vietnam as an officer and later as a police officer, and their humor was reflected by my sense of humor, however not as zany and was appreciated by those that served with me.

Moe and Shemp joined Ted and Betty Healy's act in 1923. Healy already used Ken Lackey as a planted member of the audience who heckled, i.e., a stooge. Healy also employed a dance team, Syncopated Toes, as stooges of a sort. He and Betty would interrupt the dance act, which held a separate slot in the vaudeville bill.
Moe and Shemp left Healy in early 1925. The Healys booked a tour of the Orpheum Circuit, and the Howard brothers didn't want to leave the east coast.
The Healys returned to New York as the stars of Earl Carroll's Vanities of 1925 on Broadway. Shemp rejoined Healy after the Broadway revue ended. Shemp was one of Healy's stooges when Ted and Betty were signed to star in the Shuberts' Passing Show of 1926. That revue closed during the out of town tryouts. Shemp was Healy's most prominent stooge in the Shuberts' Broadway revue A Night in Spain in 1927
A Night in Spain had a long run on Broadway. Betty retired from the act after the run ended on Broadway. Shemp quit Healy a second time during the post-Broadway national tour of A Night in Spain in 1928 to try to succeed in vaudeville with his own act. He was replaced by Larry.
Shemp's act was not a success, and he returned to Healy before 1928 was over.
In the meantime, Moe was in the real estate business from 1925 to 1928. He failed when the suburban land boom crashed.
At Christmas dinner,, 1928, Healy invited Moe to rejoin the act for the new Shubert Broadway revue Ted was writing, A Night in Venice. Healy booked some vaudeville dates to work on the new sketches, and Howard, Fine and Howard made their first appearance together as Healy's supporting comedians in Cleveland in early 1929.
I could continue, but I hope that I made my point that to say that The Three Stooges began in 1922 is hooey.

Without doubt, my favourite Stooge was CURLY. I loved his antics. I remember the very first time I saw the 3 Stooges was at a Cinema in London in 1957. I was 11 years old at the time. At this point in time, my favourite Stooge (Curly) was already dead. The film I refer to is "HAVE ROCKET WILL TRAVEL" a film in which Curly Joe had joined Larry Fine and Moe Howard, I had been hooked on the 3 Stooges from that time, and saw many of their TV shows that featured Curly (God Rest his dear soul).

I had the experience of a lifetime as a child. My dad made the arrangements and my mom took me and my baby brother to see the "Three Stooges". It was a venue that was probably pretty trashy and totally beneath these Kings of Comedy! After the show we went "backstage" and I walked up to Moe and spoke with him. Today, I am six feet tall, but I remember looking up at Moe and noticing the big bags under his eyes. I asked, "Where's Larry?" Moe said that he was sick, so he couldn't be there that day. "Curly Joe" was standing there, but at that time my heroes were Moe, Larry and Curly (Jerry Howard) so I didn't much acknowledge him... Today I am almost 70, but that day will stand out in my memory forever. Those guys were the best!

Loved these guys all my life. I think of them, even today, as my beloved Jewish uncles, particularly the Howards and Larry. I met Larry when he was living in the Motion Picture Country Home after his stroke. I was a senior in high school. I pretended I was doing it for a school project but really just wanted so badly to meet him. So, I "interviewed" him. He gave me several autographed photos. He was very sweet and kind. Each of their souls should have an "aliyah," which, in Judaism, means that their souls should climb to the next level closer to the revelation of G-D.

Two of my favorite shows were "Swingin' the Alphabet" and "If a Body Meet a Body." They still make me cry laughing!! You can find Moe Howard's appearances on the Mike Douglas Show here on YT. Worth a viewing for anybody who loved the Stooges, but notable is Moe's "delivery" of a pie to his wife, and then, on a later show, her response to him. Moe will forever be my favorite, but I'm also in the Shemp camp, and while the team was running on empty when Joe Besser had to step in, I've always had a soft spot for him, thanks to his appearances in other shows: Have yourself a look at the old "Jeannie" cartoon, in which Besser voiced Babu, and you'll hear a very familiar voice getting his start as Corey Anders. No, uh, "joke."
