  • Kampfgeschwader 55 Greif was one of the most active squadrons of the Luftwaffe during the whole of World War II. Beginning with the campaign in Poland, KG 55 fought in many of the hot spots of the war. During its six years of wartime operations, the pilots of KG 55 flew 54,547 combat missions and logged over 66,000 hours of flight time over enemy territories, and in the process 50 of them were awarded the Knight's Cross - an amazing achievement for a single combat squadron. Although to some extent superseded by the H-series, the Heinkel He111P continued in widespread service well into the war. This P-2 of KG 55 flew from Villacoublay, France during the autumn of 1940 on night raids over Britain and displays the Geschwaderstab markings on the nose. Crudely applied mottle night camouflage obscures the Geschwaderzeichen and fin swastika.
Seen here is an aircraft from KG 55 in diecast metal made by Corgi in 1:72nd scale. A Heinkel He 111P-2 based in Chartres, France, during the Battle of Britain, 1940. It's an extremely well-made diecast model with great detail.

    Really spectacular plane.
I’m quite partial to a ventral mg. the Germans were all about their underside positions. So useful for firing backwards.
Odd there’s no underside markings. An error on the manufacturer’s part?

Certainly more comfortable than a ball turret, haha. Not sure if its an error or just was painted over. As the tail marking is missing as well and when reading about this actual aircraft when the night camo was applied the tail marking was just sprayed over, maybe when they painted the black underneath they did the same. A lot of the time the paint was just broomed on hastily as well, especially winter camo's. Thanks as always for watching.

Never seen a heinkel camo like this before from corgi, is this an old model?

I believe it's an older, now discontinued model from Corgi. I only bought mine probably about 8 month's ago 🤣. Yes the camo caught my attention too, it's why a paid a lot for it. These were used in night raids against England from bases in France 😀 guess the French wine gave the Lufwaffe painters some artistic flare when applying the night camo 🤣
