  • Having successfully released their bombs over the German city of Munster on the night of 7th/8th July 1941, the crew of Vickers Wellington L7818 set course for their home station at Feltwell and hoped for an uneventful return flight. Those hopes were dashed when co-pilot James Allen Ward noticed a sinister shape stalking their aircraft in the night sky, a Luftwaffe Bf 110 nighfighter. Before he could warn his pilot, the enemy fighter positioned itself under the Wellington and unleashed a hail of bullets and cannon shells into its fuselage, leaving it severely damaged and on fire. On seeing the severity of the fire, the pilot instructed Ward to prepare the crew to abandon the aircraft and as a parting, ironic comment in this desperate situation, also said, "see what you can do about that damned fire!" Ward took him at his word, cutting a hole in the fuselage of the bomber and attempting to extinguish the flames using fire extinguishers, however the savage slipstream made these efforts futile. What he did next was quite extraordinary - he crawled through the astrodome hatch on the spine of the bomber and onto the wing of the aircraft.
    Clinging to the exposed geodetic framework of the Wellington, Ward slowly made his way to the wing fire and stuffed a canvas sheet into the gaping hole, putting out the fire in the process. Completely exhausted due the slipstream, he was pulled back into the aircraft by his crewmates, who could hardly believe what they had just witnessed. Though still badly damaged, the bomber made it back to an RAF emergency landing ground and the crew all survived this incredible ordeal, thanks to the selfless act of bravery performed by Sgt James Allen Ward.
    Seen here is the Vickers Wellington Mk I from the RAF No.75 (New Zealand) Sqn, L7818, James Allen Ward, RAF Fetwell, England, July 7th 1941 in 1:72nd scale diecast by Corgi.

      Yeah man I always enjoy a good story about an aircraft and its pilot. For me it makes it that little bit better when collecting a model. Its always easy to forget that there were people in these awesome looking machines and many of whom would never make it home. Thanks as always for dropping past 👍

    Thats a big one...even in 1/72.....love when they do a model of an aircraft with a story behind it.👍👍

      So do I. To be honest most aircraft, especially WW1 and WW2 usually always do. But most manufacturers don't really say much about it. It's why I try to research each aircraft and hopefully find out info on the pilot and make sure I mention that in the video. I feel at least then there story has a chance to be remembered. A lot of people look at a model not knowing anything about it, just that it looks cool. Hopefully my videos help a little in honoring them in a little way. 😀

      Certainly was a crazy feat of bravery. And the man himself seemed so humble in the footage. Was a nice model too, although my propellers did not spin as freely as normal Corgi ones. But oh well, i dont sit there spinning them anyway....I haven't got that bad yet 🤣

      @@heavymetaldiecast I noted the lack of waist guns and only two, not four, in the tail turret. I wonder if they were trying to make the plane lighter? 🤔

    • @heavymetaldiecast
      @heavymetaldiecast  6 месяцев назад +1

      @@shinra2755 Yes the area is covered over where the waist guns would normally operate from. I noticed that on photos of real early Mk.I's. The 4 gun rear turret would come in later variants, I think the Mk.III. 😁😁👍

      If you can check out the Corgi Bristol Beaufort- a superb model - one of the finest and flown by Kenneth Campbell who was awarded the VC also for his attack on the Geneisenau; sadly he too failed to return. Great model with an emotional story of superb heroism to go with it. @@heavymetaldiecast
