  • When Porsche changed the Porsche Cayenne back in 2018, they didn’t tell anyone they were coming out with a flashy looking derivation of their SUV in the form of the 2020 Porsche Cayenne Coupe. Finally on the road after the Geneva Motor Show premiere, MotoMan heads to Austria to drive the 434 HP Turbo flavor a/k/a the 2020 Porsche Cayenne S Coupe and learns it’s the same Porsche Cayenne, just a lot more tailored to look at . . . #OptionsGame

I noticed the more expensive the car is, the more likely manufacturers are to charge you extra for options that come standard on much less expensive vehicles. Porche is notorious for this. Ferrari too. Even if you can afford it, who likes being ripped off?

I always ask myself the same question. You know it costs just 100 Euros somewhere else. If you want a car like that you need to swallow 10 times the price or even more. Or sellin Alcantara as special to the people, even when it is cheap stuff.

Porsche always charges 3-4x more money just for those standard technology stuff & equipment's like they are making something special. It’s a ripoff but it makes their car Expensive and exclusive so typical people can’t afford it. That's just their business strategy. sell less unit make and more money. I wish they could have more high-end materials since they are charging way too much.

I agree that we should buy what we can afford and I’m always telling my kids to buy used quality cars in cash much like most financial advisers suggest. As for having $50M + in cash available then I have no perspective. Most of the self made wealthy people I deal with are conservative with their money and drive normal sedans or pick up trucks.

It's been two years since I upgraded my iPhone lighting cables to USB-C, and I think it's about time you come over to the dark side. Dongles are a 2016 relic and should only be used with miniUSB or microUSB devices.
Most mobile devices manufactured in the past three years will charge a lot faster with USB-C, more importantly, we now have the ability to power a small laptop without an AC outlet and a cumbersome wall wart.

I warped the brake rotors on a 2013 Cayenne Base just driving it around the city. I was told they just heated up too much due in part to the weight of the vehicle and of course how I drove it. I would get a new Cayenne with CCBs going forward so that I wouldn't have to worry about that happening again.

USB C is backward compatible with legacy devices so by including it they support the broadest range of phones / laptops / etc you could plug into it. In another 10-15 years there'll be something else, but for now USB-c maximizes the spectrum of devices you could plug into it.

About the USB I honestly think that USB C is catching on and your future devices will be compatible, remember when cars stills had cassettes and there was this tape with a cable on the end, to plug in your audio, the cable adapter thing in many ways has always been an issue. Migrating technologies, they just planned ahead I guess. Great review btw.

Porsche is one of the only car manufacturers that you can have the options exceed the actual base price of the vehicle. I’ve built a Macan with their configurator and had almost $60k in options compared to the base price of under $50k. I’d bet that added options is one of the main reasons that Porsche is the most profitable car company around. You’d think you’d get a lot more standard equipment for the price but people are willing to pay the extra money so why change.

Regarding the type of USB (Type-A/Classic) /USB-C inputs in this car: a mixture of both would have been nice, but progress won't be stopped, glad they made the leap now rather than in 5 years. Both would have been future proof, but USB-C for many, many more years to come.

I will take the USB as a form of future proofing, considering that most devices are all adapting to that plug. So use dongles now to not worry later or regular USB now to have to use a dongles in the future. That's how I see it considering most people will have this car on a lease for at least 3 years or more. USB C will be even more normal in that time.

    Great review, as always!
Beautiful designg inside and out. It looks 1K times better, to me, than the current iterations of the X6 and GLE Coupé.
    A few things though:
I think the "sports package" is merely a marketing gimmick to squeeze more cash out of customers. Unless it saves 300+ pounds, it is a moot point, and quite frankly absurd, to call it "lightweight."
Also, IMHO, not offering an operable (panorama) sunroof as standard equipment is pretty silly.
A design mishap that drives me crazy: when the spoiler opens up, the exposed grey/black plastic garnish should be body-coloured. It would make for a more cohesive/integrated design and it is not much of an expense for Porsche. Same goes for the Panamera. It is just a lazy cost-cutting solution to leave it as grey/black plastic.
Lastly, car manufacturers, not just Porsche, need to, at the very least, start offering a hatch glass wiper blade as an option. It is, IMHO, a faux pas that ANY vehicle with such slanted rear glass do not have a wiper blade. I know the Panamers and other models have that optuon; why not here? Has any of the engineers driven these vehicles in heavy rain or snow?!?!?!?!?

Wholeheartedly agree on points 2-4. Going to be covering point 2 in the upcoming Cayenne Coupe Turbo episode. Regarding point 3, having now seen a lot of these on the on this drive, when the rear spoiler is up, the car just looks odd.

    • @hbm_54
      @hbm_54 5 лет назад

      @@MotoManTV -- Thank you!!!
On point 3, i think this could be a design vs cost matter. As a designer, I could understand the choice of just exposing the "underpinnings" of the mechanical spoiler if it was a cheap car (which wouldn't have such a feature anyway.) But at the price point Porsche is, design "cohesive-ness" should take precence. Having a body-coloured garnish under the spoiler would actually make it look as if it was floating when deployed, which would actually be a pretty neat effect. And we all know that spoiler is gonna' be deployed most of the time! Just a thought.

The real problem is constantly changing these port sizes. USB-C won't last long either. It makes things dated way sooner than they need to be. Just stick with a port (like the standard 3-prong electrical outlet in the US), and figure a way for the technology to work with that, for many decades, not a handful of years...

And this is one big attraction to me. I hate opening sunroofs; they don't really provide much air, they often leak to let water in, and when open you can get bird droppings (and worse) on you and your upholstry. Porsche was wise to follow Tesla's example with a glass roof. Kudos! I would just like to see an opaque (rather than translucent) covering to totally blot out light with the glass roof covered -- or at least be afforded the option to get that.

I can't say with authority, but based on personal knowledge of the people I know, they buy Porsches because the lease deals are more expensive than loans. BMW, MB et al have both good MF and manufacture underwritten residuals that result in cheap leases, Porsche leases are so bad that people go to third parties to get a lease.

There is no point for you to say that some options are standard on a Hyundai, because if you get a Hyundai then are you getting a Porsche, i didn't think so. A Porsche is a Porsche and a Hyundai is a Hyundai, doesn't matter what options are on each because at the end of the day, you still have a Porsche.

Jesus Christ 14k???!!!! God damn. I watched that part 5 times to make sure I heard it right. The Turbo's options game is gonna be a juicy one.
I believe the demographic who buys Coupe SUVs value design, performance, high seating position & ground clearance (bad roads), but doesn't necessarily need the "utility" of a traditional 2-box SUV ... At least as an X6 fan that's what I believe lol . . . ;)
As the late great George Carlin once said "We Bullshit Ourselves".
Back to the Cayenne Coupe. I think they did a good job with the Coupe bits, especially the wider hips. But I still don't like the vanilla Cayenne bits (front and interior designs).
Definitely Chalk over Lava & Burmester over Bose any day of the week, twice on Sunday.
As for the Type-C plugs, I think a mix of traditional ports and type-Cs is the way to go. Male-To-Male Type Cs are not that mainstream yet and there's way too many "legacy" devices still in circulation today and probably for the next 5-7 years.
Re: Carbon Ceramics, are SUVs even allowed during Track Days?

Funny you mention the 'vanilla' Cayenne bits. There is a segment I shot while driving the car about the design of the dash that I cut out. You may remember in one of our Panamera episodes I talked about the bulky design of the dash in both this and the Panamera? Well, while I had the engineers there, I asked them what gives. Long and short, it wasn't a function thing as I thought (i.e. - hiding chassis control and/or SRS equipment in that space). It was an old design trick - putting in more horizontal lines plays a bit of a trick on the eye - makes you think something appears wider than it actually is. That is why the front and the light bar at the rear of the current Cayenne look that way. Well, they extended that design ethos to the interior. Me, I would prefer a throwback to the 928.

USB-C is used because new Apple products come with USB-C cables and Porsche only cares about Apple products, hence only offering Apple Car Play.

Where’s the T version ? Now that would be a real “light weight” version except when you add back everything to want, making it weight the same... but it has a T on it, so it must be special. Ok I’m done.

This is what the Cayenne should have been all along and Porsche was too affraid to make before the Lambo Urus was launched. Product placement can have a difficult strategy....
