This week was a very big deal in that I finally started building (out of order) the walls the for cabin on my DIY houseboat. This is my official declaration that the fun part of the houseboat build has begun!

About me: I decided to jump on an opportunity to buy a school bus for $1000. After 2.5 years of building and a couple summers doing bus life, I sold the bus and began building a tiny house boat from scratch. My hope is that with a couple years of practice building under my belt, I can do a bit better of a job this time and build something that actually floats 🤞

For everyone pulling their hair out over my chosen methods: once again, I am using the materials I’m using because that’s what the plans call for! I’m not out here thinking I can design a boat and I’m also not out here trusting people in the comments over the designer (who actually built and uses this boat). Please relax

From the poem IF by Robert Kipling.. " IF you can keep your head, while all others are losing theirs and blaming you for it" The universe has a way of turning around and coming out good in the end for each situation. When you get frustrated while focusing on small details in life, take a step back and remember to look for the bigger picture. Also when frustrated about larger loads on your mental plate, focus on one thing or issue at a time. Our minds are vety powerful and can accomplish incredible things. Hold fast and keep moving forward 😊

Just a few things, if you need materials go to the contractor's desk and order all of what you need. If you are getting the last 10 boards of something, you are getting the last 10 boards of what 50 people picked through and would not take. When I get boards, I usually find I will only take every other one, kicked the rest out.

Staring at what you have done is normal, abnormal if you do not. Examining what you have done is half the fun, plus you can often see the mistakes you did not previously see and can decide what comes next.

The best part of the week That board at the begiining was cupped. They say in the lumber industry a perfect board hasn't made up it's mind, yet. The most stable wood is quartersawn As, you see in guitar tops but wood cut that way is very expensive Since there are very few boards that can be cut that way in a log

  • @alanhat5252
    @alanhat5252 2 месяца назад +2

7:40 the glue I recommend is Cascamite.
It's shelf-life is appalling & you have to mix small batches from powder but it holds for decades. I've been using it 50 years & never had a joint fail, the wood breaks first.
You can use it as filler by mixing in sawdust.

Love your fortitude! Two suggestions. A corner round router bit with a bearing guide makes quick work of rounding edges. A set of different sizes is a good investment. Also, after you mix epoxy, spread it out in a paint roller pan or cookie sheet lined with aluminum foil for easy disposal. This gives you a much longer open time and delays the exothermic reaction. Hope this helps.

    Awesome work!
I’m loving that you wet the wood for the gorilla glue. (You know how many people don’t..)
It has to be done EVERY time for it to hold and bond properly.
The foaming part sucks though when you gotta keep wiping as it pushes out the sides. But, that’s what creates the barrier.
Awesome job on your builds!! By yourself at that. Keep up the great job you’re doing.

Sweet progress looks good. Mine has some modifications off from the original design, one is all windows hinge up. In Oklahoma, the more air flow the better. We are hitting 100 degrees over the next couple of days. I like the red. I've prepped my sailboat for painting. I painted the keel candy apple red and fixing to paint the hull above the water line red also.

Funnily what drew me in was a recommendation for a car video when you were rebuilding the camper top I've been hooked ever since. I know it gets frustrating sometimes learning how to do certain things or being irritated at imperfections. Remember it's all a learning experience, you'll learn what is better, what you prefer, tricks to save you time, and that experience will carry over into every other project. I love watching you because you are a go getter. Keep up the hard work it will pay off.

Is there a proper hardwood-type store near you? I can't imagine the frustration of trying to build a boat out of big box store wood. If you get a flush trim/pattern router bit you could set your template on top of the wood and use the router to do things like those curve cuts. Very low-cost addition for a tool you already have and a game-changer for cutting curves. Every cut comes out exactly the same that way too.

You CAN use a router for the top of the windows. You just need one of the 'fancy' ones with a ball bearing on the shaft. Make a slightly thicker template, clamp it to the part you want to shape, and make certain the bearing goes against the template. Also, something I read somewhere; Don't let the hunt for perfection get in the way of Good Enough...

I'm looking for a product that I wanted you to see before you built w/ plywood but you're way ahead of me.... lol, I had been
looking at different materials for a boat build when I added you as a channel to follow. I had just talked to these folks over
the last 2 weeks but now it's gone? I'm looking at everything like you are & I worry about even marine wood products but if
you fiberglass or seal them really good you'll have years of travels. If I find it I will drop it here. peace & GB

4:40 I don't know that I would pay money to have my skepticism reduced or even eliminated.
