Honda Monkey motorcycle camping: a Quite Bad trial run
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 27 июн 2024
- Ever since I bought my Honda Monkey in spring 2022, i've like the idea of motorcycle camping, but i've never gotten around to trying it - until now. The Monkey is itty bitty and doesn't have a lot of room to carry gear, so this week i set out to see just how much gear i can carry and just how disastrous it will be should i decide to take my motorcycle camping in the wilderness.

About me: I decided to jump on an opportunity to buy a school bus for $1000. After 2.5 years of building and a couple summers doing bus life, I sold the bus and began building a tiny house boat from scratch. My hope is that with a couple years of practice building under my belt, I can do a bit better of a job this time and build something that actually floats 🤞

The world needs an Emma & Hannah Lee Duggan motorcycle camping collab video! ❤
Yes sir
Oh, that would be fun!😆😆😆
Hannah’s sister could collaborate on boat videos…
A pairing with Hannah Duggan would likely pull in a lot of subscribers for Emma as she does everything and has the money to do it with all the followers.
Well this is me saying I came to the comment section to inform her of this must need as well!!!
You didn't actually lose the hammock. You wisely used it as a trail marker to find the road back.
Two words come to mind for transporting luggage in your situation: Cargo Net. A small one would work well.
And some Rox Straps in there too. Also, a new offroad rider with an open-face helmet is not the right choice.
Harborfreight sells them cheap. Js
A large backpack meant for hiking is the fix. Works like a charm. And tent is kinda mandatory if ticks and skeetos involved. Fun vid
That's what I was thinking you beat me to it
A hammock can have a bug net. I full on hammock camp (with moto) and it is a complete system. One recommendation I would have for Emma is to get long hammock straps. Python straps work awesome.
Bin your Bungees and get Rok Straps instead. They are much much better ( although expensive). And if you do this use them so that they are parallel to each other and not in a X pattern like you had with your Bungees.
Also there are racks available that fit on the front of the Bike which go over the headlight. This would give you extra carrying capacity. Love seeing you out on the Monkey. Carry on.😊
I once dropped my pack off the back of my snowmobile in the middle of Yellowstone. I had to backtrack 20 miles to find it. Yellowstone at sunset is amazing, Yellowstone in the dark as it gets colder and colder was not amazing. When I got to the exit gate the park ranger was nice and only gave me a warning for traveling in the park at night.
Those square plastic milk boxes from Wallyworld work great for a basket on back of your bike !!
Rok straps and bungie nets are with it for securing stuff to a motorcycle
A trial run is such a good idea 😊
You have 2 things on the rack, tie them separately to it with short cords & just use the bungees to stabilize it. Perhaps tie one of them on the fuel tank?
You never stop amazing me with the simplification of these things. You’re the example of the motto “ just do it!”
A guarantee for many smiles from the viewers as things develop. Greetings from Holland 🇳🇱
Moto camping is awesome. Do it with whatever you have. You'll be fine. Enjoy.
I use Gaia GPS and record my route so I never get lost. Great video! Thank you!❤
I had an old Triumph Tiger 650 back in the day. For saddlebags, I found a couple of olive drab daypacks at an Army/Navy surplus store. I just crisscrossed the shoulder harnesses over the rear wheel, worked like a champ. Looked nice and retro also.
That was a good trial run
You will know what it will take if you spend a longer time. Don't forget to bring some rope for your hammock. God bless you, have fun and be safe 🫶🐼
Love seeing the Monkey vids. You should definitely do the Monkey Cannonball run. San Diego to NYC. Would be epic to film!
I've got a friend going on that. But I fear they're in for a rude awakening at doing 400 mile days on a [essentially] plated minibike.
👍🏻😁 a plastic milk crate on back will hold your stuff better, and give you something to sit on while cooking over the camp fire 😁👍🏻
Hey I suggested you do a moto camping video about 2 weeks ago and here it is. 😃
Bungee bad, tie down strap good. Even rope is better than stretchies. Hammock with only a sleeping bag = cold butt syndrome. Hammock with underquilt = warm and comfy. No tarp over the hammock... risky. Honestly you'd be better off with a cheap foam pad on the ground until you get hammock camping sorted out. Many learning experiences ahead! :D
You have some cool camping areas near you! And again, you rock! Never afraid to make it up as you go.
Pulled up to find your stuff is gone. Haha.
I’ve been there.
I love watching people starting out moto camping. I’m not being nasty here. It’s just fun to watch. You’ll learn from mistakes and, trust me, never perfect it.
I always forget something or get something wrong. Innovation is part of the adventure.
Enjoy your rides.
Good vid.
Strap your sleepingbag and hammock/tent on top of your fueltank. Then you have the carrier for other stuff.
You’re adorable. Love your determination.
Perhaps your next build project will be a small camping foldout trailer for your Honda Monkey.
Love it! I have a Honda Monkey but have never thought of moto camping. Now I might give it a go! 🏍🏍
When you were tying your stuff to the seat my thought was that's not going to stay on there. I won't elaborate on how I knew that though. Lol.
I really enjoy watching Emma, and her adventures . This girl gots big cajones, as it were!
I would recommend a gym bag/duffel bag. You can shove your tent/sleeping bag/other gear into the gym bag and then just strap the bag onto your rack. It will keep everything from falling apart. It has worked for me!
You're never lost. You're just someplace you haven't been.
Home Depot HDX milk crate, fasten it to your rack with u-bolts, I’d place the smaller items such as the hammock in the bottom because the sleeping bag strapped down atop would hold everything else in the basket.
I’m not sure if you follow his channel. The Dork in the Road, a.k.a. Ben has devoted his channel to adventure riding and moto camping. Ben has excellent videos about gear and packing up your bike. I think he made a camping video on a Honda Monkey. All his videos are great and very informative. Be safe!
Most excellent adventure thank you for taking me along 😃👍💖
I have the same motorcycle, you can get some hoses clamps / thick zip ties and use them to attach a plastic milk crate to your luggage rack, for all your camping adventures 🍻
For every motorcycle camping trip ive done, everything needed has fit in an extra large dry bag ratchet strapped vertically to the sissy bar with a bedroll below it strapped to the body framing.
Cool, enjoyed that. Loved to have seen more, how you went through the night, feelings the next morning. Great to hear you admit to your own mistakes as well. A good honest overview.
just need to move small rack to front and get longer rack for the back.
Carry a backpack on your back while you ride, you can carry a lot more. That's what I used to do, but my bike was much bigger.
It's cool to see someone figuring things out.
Check on some of the motorcycle sides for baskets. Side bags stuff like that. You might find something you like, but you gonna pay a little bit more. So I don't want to tell you
Coast to Coast on that Thing... well it would be fun to watch... at least...
6:21 you are so freakin adorable on that little thing with your little helmet😂
looks so fun Emma, you have the right idea, and less is more. Great motorcycle camping 🏕️ trip. Thanks for Sharing…
Say NO to bungees!
Say HELLO to Rok Straps!
I’m happy you found a place to camp… which is more than most people do! lol ;)
Check out Helmet Head's Ashworth Honda Monkey bike setup. He's been traveling through Europe and beyond in stages. He carries quite a bit of gear.
Try to put everything in a big backpack and when you climb on your bike loose a lil bit the straps allow the weight to rest on the seat and rack. That way you control the backpack and you don't getting tired.
More Monkey Vids!! Moto camping is fun some great gear on the market!
I have some ideas about how to attach a tub on that rack, too, if you want them. Im sure you’ll work it out, though.
Nothing wrong with a small adventure. A duffel or large beach tote or cargo net will solve a bunch of those issues. also get a hank of camping rope, infinitely handy to take with you whenever you camp. Just my 2c take it or leave it. GO EMMA! :)
Sleeping bags have two temperature ratings. One is the survival rating, which is what most companies use to advertise and the other is the comfort rating. The next time you go to buy a new sleeping bag be sure to check out that comfort rating.
Keep enjoying the camping. Keep practicing for a while till you feel confident. Before you go out on your own, it'll be amazing when you're ready though.
You can bungee a plastic milk crate on back. Put all the small stuff in Ethen sleeping bag on top bungee to hold it all in
I have the BEARBUTT 2 man hammock and bug mesh added Just need some type of fly
Maybe a basket for the front and back and that will not way. You'll be able to haul a lot of stuff
Looks like you did great! Safe travels, and best of luck next time!
here is a major tip... stop using "bungy cords" use a ratchet strap instead. they will hold your load a lot tighter and more securely.
Like Yuracamp IRL, this is a great concept! Great Monkey too, nice to see more of those on YT.
You rock.🤘 Don't give up. You'll love it once you have a little more of a system🙂
camping complete, works fine
Hikers do it all in a backpack.you can get a rack for the monkey.front over headlite, behind the seat and a side rack too, good for extra fuel.people are riding monkeys across the USA in a cannonball run and across europe.you can do it
because you want to behold the beauty, yet cant per societal standards, yet are actually off the charts actually
3:16 Having done extensive motorcycle camping through out the decades, the terror entered my heart when I noticed you hadn't checked off pajamas...
love the video emma -even though you had a few problems ya kept going-maybe in the future a 125cc bike-thats why i love ya emma you never quit you work through and keep at it -the bus work was a good foundation for ya. Happy 4th of July emma -charlie from arkansas.-also dont forget the bug repellant. your a viking emma!
I had a Honda rebel 2001 250cc a good beginnings bike as well it was always fun in the good weather anyway enjoy your day and good job doing your awesome adventures😊
Adventurists
On monkey bikes across foreign countries! I get there emails consistently...sounds mega fun!
Great video and adorable personality. I really enjoy the monkey adventures. Thank you.
motocamping almost never goes great the first time, but thats what makes it great the first time. i still manage to screw something up every single time. also, its baller af to be doing that on a monkey, in regular ass clothes, just raw dawgin the world on a minibike. love it
You need a good size backpack. Pack it with all your stuff and fit it so some of the weight is taken on the seat behind you.
you do crack me up emma you try stuff out just like my daughter would dry pine cones are great for fire starting hun
Can I just say your attitude, and personality are amazing! I really enjoyed your content. Safe travels.
멋진 모험입니다.
건강 챙기면서 활동하세요!
And a torch (but I suppose you always have a phone with you). Have fun. Oh. Toilet paper. Always toilet paper. Stay safe out there.
Great vid with excellent editing and putting together interesting clips.
Whatever you think you need to bring with you for sleeping outside, test it in your backyard at home.
I have a feeling your gonna have alot of motorcycle friends after this video
You have 18k views right now. Pretty much killing it. If you want to continue down this path I’d start contacting some vendors and get some sponsorships for parts. T. rex racing makes some amazing parts for the monkey and there is a ton of great motocamping gear out there. You can probably upgrade that monkey for next to nothing. Motocamping content is definitely popular and I think you can kill it! And don’t doubt the little monkey and say it’s not a long distance adventure bike. Anything is an adventure bike, all you have to do is start the adventure. I’d totally be your motorcycle friend if I wasn’t on the other side of the country! Keep it up!
Weather/ temperatures has more to do with camping needs than anything else. I have been camping 66 of my 78 years. I have camped with a blanket, peanut and jelly sandwich, and Kool-Aid to a 32' fifth wheel and they all work for a certain season of life. In our thirties we pulled a pop up tent designed for motorcycles. I have had a basket on the front and saddle bags, or milk crate on a rear rack. (Always carry some nylon rope, with or without a tent.)
Too funny. At least you are doing it. Cheers
Such a fun fake camping trip!! Finding the biker friends will be easy. We have had no problems.
Thats a great idea!! Emma do teach out to Hannah you2 would be great together!!!!!
You did good never give up. Very Smooth
Inspired me to take my big adventure bike gear and set it up on my monkey for an adventure!!! Awesome trial run. Looking forward to the next updated monkey camping trip.
Always have fun when camping. Don't know where you are. Just be careful not to become a bear burrito. I love camping. I've never done it on my motorcycle. Although I have been looking into it. Keep enjoying your life.
Great video, Looks like fun.
Good luck
A sleeping bag has no value if you don't have an isolating mat below. Even more important in a hammock than on ground, the bottom will otherwise always be cold, since he bag does not isolate when weight is on it. But your approach is so refreshing, but please believe me with the right gear camping IS in fact fun! :-)
I’ve been moto camping for 5-6 years now using either one of my two bikes, a CBR1000RR, or a CRF300L Rally.
I haven’t found any friends willing to come with me.
My father does come moto camping with me with his own bike of course.
And now, my girlfriend bought a Rebel 500 and started moto camping ⛺️ with me as well. My posse is getting bigger. 😅
Don’t rely on friends to live your dream, you will be disappointed.
New subscriber here, I found your video as a YT suggestion. This video speaks to me because I will soon be doing my first moto-camping, and first solo camping trip in the near future. I'm looking forward to your adventures.
Great Video. Loved your honest kind of Humor. New to your Channel, subscribed !
Mount a milk crate on the back also make some mini-saddle bags for the rear!!! childs back pack should work, with support to keep things out of the rear wheel!!!!you can do-it!!!!!!!!!
You could put a milk crate on the rear rack, that would give you more capacity to carry stuff, plus when you get to wherever you're going you can use it as a seat. You're welcome.
You just need a couple of waterproof roll bags. Never use bungees for anything. Voila straps or rigid, nylon straps. Google and RUclips are your friends for Monkey setups.
Your face and skin are nice. For now. I’m surprised you haven’t gotten more/better riding gear. Definitely something to look into. Keep up the good work. The videos are fun.
Hi motocamping friend, first off you did great! Everyone should just yolo go camping cause it's great fun. And now a bunch of tips and tricks I have learned in my camping trips.
Hammocks are great, but ropes are absolutely awful. Use straps. Gives you more range of trees you can use.
Sleeping bag in the hammock, does not work super good in cold weather. Basically your body smashes the stuffing flat and it's not very warm. Good hamock setups use an underquilt, I do not have a good setup so my hammock is for warm weather for now. You can save space and just bring a throw blanket since I see the utah plates (luckyyyy it's so pretty there).
Watch some hammock setup videos. There's a trick to sleeping diagonally that makes it more flat.
A crate is definitely a good idea. Backpacks are fine for short trips but the weight on your shoulders gets old. I would try to avoid it if you're doing any multi day off-road stuff.
There's always more, but those tips would have made my first few trips a lot more comfortable. K byeeee
You did a great job testing out all your gear. I hope you found enough interest to keep expanding on your skills. Best of luck!
You should invest in one of those tents that attaches to, or connects over your motorcycle.
When you look for a sleeping bag and its rated for example 20 degrees. That pretty much means you should survive but you will be cold. Admire you going for it and you may have had a few setbacks you did it.
I said it before and I mean it - you're a champion. Not only are you taking on a project that I honestly thought was impossible to do - but you're doing an amazing job at telling the story while succeeding. To the point that I think I might be building a boat this year. Like for real - alongside my ambulance build I think I could do it if I can bounce ideas off you and get advice. But my main work is as a wilderness/backpacking guide and photographer. So when you made your "packing list" for this trip I had both cringe and admiration. Cringe for the list but admiration for your ability to just go for it. That's rare. A transamerican motorcycle trip has definitely been on my list but now I've also this houseboat idea and some others to get done. Anyway. Looking forward to what's next.
ROK straps are awesome, but the Green Chile ADV stuff is the best!
While you're figuring out the basket/bag situation you should look for a bungee net. I feel like it would work much better for the current setup.
Good luck on your adventures!
I see a Motocycle upgrade incoming,👍
For your gear strap it down instead of bungees so you can really sinch it down and get a bungee net to go over top of it.
Look into a top box-like a little trunk-to see if that would work for you. Otherwise like you said, go with as big a crate as you can fit on the back and bolt that baby on. Lose the bungees and either go with ratchet straps (highly recommended) or a motorcycle cargo net…or both. Maybe bring extension straps for that sweet hammock you found on the trail.😉
