I was working for AAA in Indianapolis, IN and got a call one nite to help with a dead battery. The 96 year old WW2 veteran and his child bride of 70 plus years, he noticed my limp and commented on how to never quit moving (He had missed his second daily trip to the gym because of the dead battery) and to find the one thing that keeps you going. It took me a while longer to find that thing, but it is my motorcycles. His wife would not let me leave that cold January nite without having hot chocolate and warm pie. That night changed my outlook on a lot of things in life from then on.

Back in 2011 i did a 48 state ride to raise funds for our church's food pantry. I had stopped at the Reno Air Races the day Galloping Ghost (the P51) crashed and on the way back to my tent I met a guy that invited me to join he and his wife instead of sitting and eating alone. Turns out he was also a pilot and had been in a bad aircraft accident where the flight he was conducting lost an engine and the plane crashed. He was burned over 50% of his body. A book was written about the accident titled "Nine Minutes and Twenty Seconds". His name is Matt and we have remained friends to this day on the internet. A great read if you really want to hear a motivating story. He had a great way of making me feel happy to be alive and to enjoy every day.

One of my most memorable conversations was with someone I met through a business trip in Japan. He was a senior manager at a company I was selling optical components to. The company I worked for had a history of being involved with the Manhattan project and this gentlemen was alive during the war. It was an eye-opening conversation of how much the Japanese people suffered through the war as the military took all the supplies to keep the war going. It was a truly moving story.

Your question about conversations with a stranger brings up a different memory for me.
In Europa you can ride like 4 hours and come across like 4 different languages. As a native Dutch person I learned to speak several languages, but I'm not great at it.
Last year I was in France and basically all I could say was "Je ne parle pas Français". I do not speak French.
I was there exploring and stopped at a bridge and beautiful river. Decided to get the drone up in the air.
While flying this old lady with a walking stick came walking up on the bridge and started talking to me. Sadly I didn't understand what she was saying. But I pointed up to the drone and then to my screen. Showing her the birds view of the river where she possibly had been born and lived all her life next to. I think it was the first time she saw the area she lived from a whole different view point. She kept watching the screen all the time until I landed my little drone.
We didn't have a conversation with words, but body language, laughs, watching the same images and pointing at it.
One of my most fond memories from traveling.

Wife and I visited Effigy Mounds in Iowa and was meet with tornado sirens. The next 7 hours was a shelter, ride, repeat until we got back to motel in Madison, WI. One of our shelters was a farmhouse with the nicest elderly farming couple having a conversation while waiting out some of the storm. It was so nice that they invited us in.

Hi Amanda! I'm full time on the road in an RV. As an outdoor person my whole life, I'm new to riding on two wheels (Yamaha dual sport and RE Himalayan) which is why I follow you. Besides getting to see this beautiful amazing country we live in, my favorite part of travel are those spontaneous conversations with strangers. We discuss travel, nature, life, doing what you love no matter how crazy it looks to others, there is something special about connecting with someone you don't know and that conversation that fills your heart (or mends it). Thanks for being an example for women adventure riders!!!

Some of the most memorable conversations are with those with the previous generation. So much wisdom to share, if you're willing to listen. I know what you mean about random conversations.
On a trip through the UK, I had a chance encounter with a local artist in an authentic pub in Glastonbury and what was supposed to be a quick lunch, turned into an afternoon-long conversation over an amazing Sunday roast.
The planned visit to the tower didn't happen but it was one of those moments you described.
Deep talk about life, what we had done in it and what we were going to do in the future, with a tangent on religion and family ties.
Best conversation with a stranger I've ever had.

Stopping the vid nearly halfway through to say that brother's voiceover is a nice touch. And he's got a great radio voice!

Words from an old man: enjoyed the peace and solitude on your motorcycle. At this time of your life, a time to learn… “When you look out of your eyes, at nature happening out there, you’re looking at you. That’s the real you. The you that goes on of its self. ” (A Conversation with Myself Alan Watts). In the sun set of my life the place I go to for comfort is my motorcycle on a sunny day down a country road... Does not that great iron steed offer our sole solace...Think of riding on that perfect sunny day and that feeling of freedom from constraint comes to you, a metamorphosis happens.

Exceptional content, night time urban video, editing, and all things production! Thanks for sharing the depth of what it takes to execute such an adventure. I’m learning every time I watch.
One of my most memorable conversations was with a friend, many years my senior. I was learning a new foundation skill and the gentleman, who was proficient at the skill, said, don’t wait… learn and do it now while your vision is still good! I followed his advise and now 15 years later, I see or rather “don’t see” what he was trying to convey!

I laughed when you tipped over. Because, I suddenly felt vindicated as that happened to me a couple of weeks ago. Also at a campground, as I was about to pull away from the reservation building. I have a BMW GSA and can't flat foot it. With the downwards slope on the right and me not being positioned properly on the bike meant that we slowly tipped over and I rolled. Like you, I was fortunate that a couple of folks were close and helped to get the bike up right.
Anyway, you definitely aren't the only one. And, that wasn't the only tipover for me on that trip!
Good luck in your continued trips.

I have done many motorcycles related things like the Saddle Sore 1000, the Tail of the Dragon multiple times, all of the Blue Ridge Parkway, and moto camping in below freezing temps. i have ridden or owned many types of bikes from Harley Davidson's to my little Honda Monkey. I currently own a Royal Enfield GT 650 and a Kawasaki KLX 300sm. I'm always finding a reason to take the bikes on daily run, even if I need to put large pieces of lumber in a backpack to complete the chore. Don't get me wrong I love my JEEP, but the bikes win almost every day. Keep up the great work and stay safe!

Great video, as usual. I've said it before but it's worth saying again, your brother is a natural narrator. In my solo laps around the U.S., some of my favorite conversations ever have been with strangers. The best of those conversations were the ones had with people that were different than me...different life experiences, different views on life. I always come away from them with a total appreciation for the difference in people...and how we're not that different at all.

I’ve watched your travels and have recommended your channel to many. You are the real deal! Your videos are like documentaries and very well done.

Color me envious. I just sold my '21 Africa twin as there wasn't anyone to ride off road with it so I bought a '22 Goldwing to go long distances on, although I just finished a 3100 mile, 10 day trip on my '23 Honda Rebel 1100T. Always enjoy the amount of work you put into such great content. Larry in Fort Worth

Hi Amanda: just want to say hi and that I enjoyed your talk at the Tourtech Rally. I have your cook book down loaded on my computer but still have not gotten around to reading it yet. I am planning to ride solo to your Rocky Mountain Roll in August so see you there. Thanks for doing what you and Gary do taking so many of us along on your trips.

Have you ever thought of a “route planning how to”? You always seem to find interesting, back road, non interstate routes.

I've been looking forward to your latest video update for awhile, great as always. I was really hoping to make it to the Get On ADV Fest but my new '24 Africa Twin Adventure Sports went missing during shipping for 3 weeks. I got it last week but only have a 2 week temporary plate, my permanent plate won't be here in time. I am contemplating making the ride to your Rocky Mt Roll, it's 4,700km (2900 miles) each way for me so it's a bit of a time commitment for me - we'll see.

Hmmm... good conversations with strangers? Nothing is jumping out at me at the moment. I did have a short conversation last week with an older woman in the grocery store parking lot. She was getting out of a convertible similar to one I owned at one time. She might have been 10 to 15 years older and was enjoying the hell out of the car which was nice to see. To me, convertibles are a half step (probably less than half) to the wind therapy of riding a motorcycle but it can make the daily commute so nice on the ride home at the end of the day.
Ugh, I feel like I'm dying a slow, painful death as I'm still without a ride. (it's a long boring story). Suffice it to say, I'm still working on it, trying to get to "the thing". Hope you are well, Amanda.

Thanks for another enjoyable video Amanda! I've been long distance touring for decades but always staying in hotels. You make me wanna try moto camping but I'm concerned with ticks!! How do you deal with ticks while camping?

love the videos. Do you film in both landscape and portrait so you can do shorts or Instagram. I really trying to figure out my best plan. If you do both, what is your format or workflow. when you are at a stop do you do a video in landscape then do another in portrait. Just wanted to get your feedback

You came through my home State of Minnesota. Had no idea you were in the area last year. Love this State, hate the radical political situation as they are trying to make us California 2.0.
Glad you got to see the Mississippi river road, it's gorgeous, especially along the "Driftless zone" where all the peaked hills are in eastern MN and western WI.
As far as best conversation with a stranger? I don't recall any that stick out. Introvert problems.

I have another question. How do you manage your wet tent when breaking down camp in the morning? I'm assuming you pack the wet tent in a water proof bag to keep other items dry. What do you do during the day with the packed wet tent. What is your strategy?

This is an honest question, not a dig. States in the US frequently are (much) larger than some of the worlds larger countries (Texas is bigger than France for example), there must be so much to see in each State. Most touring videos of the US don't show these interesting "sights", instead they just ride/drive hundreds of miles a day, often on Interstates and Highways. Why not do more videos on each State's interesting features? Yes, it will take a very long time, probably a lifetime. Certainly years for some States. But, those of us who live outside of continental America, would be very interested, especially the more quirky ones like your _The World's Largest Truck Stop,_ which could be a video just in its own right.
