    About me: I decided to jump on an opportunity to buy a school bus for $1000. After 2.5 years of building and a couple summers doing bus life, I sold the bus and began building a tiny house boat from scratch. My hope is that with a couple years of practice building under my belt, I can do a bit better of a job this time and build something that actually floats 🤞

    I wish i had people like this in my life. I am a young widower, i have three young kids. As a family project, we are currently building a boat house too and all but one friend thinks i am insane and way too ambitious and naive. And this is with them knowing I am a scientist and engineer.
    Our boat has a swath hull. For the curious, there are twin hulls that are submerged, neutral buoyancy is actively managed via ballast system. The pylons have additional displacement and the main deck also displaces so even if the ballast system fails it wont sink. The main idea behind the swath is to make a house that is resistant to waves.
    You already have a tiny home bus under your belt and now this! Almost at a loss of words besides “I admire your ambition and I bet you pull this off too like your last big project”
    Anyone that makes a boat (let alone a house boat) is top notch in my book. Me and my kids are cheering you on and sending admiration from afar!!

      @@thegoodtom1718 agree many don't realize to build an average type boat You have to first draw the front ,side and overhead full size called Lofting I had to when I built that 8 foot cold molded pram Have some spline ducks to help draw curves so don't need to put nails in a piece of wood to hold the batten Plus bevels are constantly changing even on the same mold Talking about the typical type boat One of the many reasons why boat building is so interesting Sure if Emma ever wanted to she could build a flat bottom skiff

    Looking really good Emma. Roy is working on one with a bow drop step. I'd be very temped to retro fit that into my Dianne's Rose houseboat. I found a couple small issues on mine from the guy that built it and I'll pass this on to you. If you put a swim ladder on yours, highly recommended, make sure you put a metal backing plate under the deck to bolt the swim ladder down, not screws. Using of course stainless steel bolts. My swim ladder is a telescopic one and I really like it. The guy also used screws for the cleats. I've already popped one off and into the lake. Don't be "that guy". Make sure you use bolts and metal backing plates. Those cleats are what's going to hold you secure at anchor or on the side of a marina dock. The last thing you want to happen is the cleat to pop off and your vessel drift in rocks, shipping channel or into someone else's vessel. Anyways, looks great and you're going to love it.

    If you want longer pot life with epoxy use broad shallow pans instead of cups. The thicker epoxy is the faster it kicks, so pie pans not yogurt cups. This will get you a bit more time to work. Hope this helps.

    Hey Emma, you can put your epoxy mix in a bowl and set that bowl in an ice water bath, to chill it and it will slow down the reaction time to give you a bit more working time. Once you apply it to the warm wood and such it will begins to heat and kick off but it will stay “ready” in bowl until you apply it

  • @Bentons_Place-DIY
    @Bentons_Place-DIY Месяц назад

    About your staining process...
    You should apply a light to medium coat, let it sit for 5-10 minutes, then wipe off the excess. Then, you can use another rag to buff it into the grain until you get the exact result you want. You may or may not have yo add another coat, depending on your preferences.
    Most new stain users apply way too much in the beginning until they get it down. Have patience, work carefully, and always use a "rest board" until you find the right shade for your project.
    Hope this helos.

    Looks really good. To slow the epoxy "kicking" you can store the epoxy in an ice chest with a little bit of ice. Keep the internal temp at 50-60 degrees. After you have mixed the epoxy, pour it into a flat pan. I use a throw away tin baking pan and line it with foil. You can use Isopropyl alcohol to clean up the epoxy. I use the 91%.

Use 3 pieces of scrap wood the thickness of the panels you are cutting, make them all rectangular, sandwich them all together, push the center piece down a few inches and secure. start your cut and go far enough to be able to place that helper over the cut line you just made. Hope it will help as it looked very handy.

    Use a wood conditioner from the same maker as your wood stain. The stain color sample on the stain container usually shows the shade on oak wood...and all wood of the same species is not consistent...the same of any species of wood. With the conditioner treated wood, the staining results are generally more consistent overall. If you put stain on softwoods, your results will not be very good overall, due to the characteristics of softwoods vs hardwoods.
