From my experience, what usually kills a 2000-2011 Focus is rust in the rocker panels. Mechanically, they are pretty solid. Pre-2005 they had a timing belt, so you have to keep an eye on that. Otherwise, cheap and cheerful, especially with a manual transmission. And a good wagon is GOLD.
@@ScottyGMusic yeah, Ford sealed up the drain holes in the rockers, right at the factory. If you had caught it early enough, you could have cleared the sealer out with a small screwdriver, but once they have been full of water for a couple of years, it's too late. @@abeneufeld9690 Good for you keeping it on the road! Mine is at 241,000, and it barely uses any oil. I am sure the engine would make it to 300,000, if only the rest of the car would.
I have a 2005 ZX4 (4 door sedan) 5-speed with 199K that Ive owned since 2014. I runs great and everything works but its off the road because it is completely rotted out and not safe to drive. Its a shame but that is what kills these cars in the rust belt (Im in New England). I just bought a 2006 ZXW wagon with 46K original miles and zero rust. I wont be driving it in the winter so hopefully it will last a long time
Geat video as usual Scotty. That poor Ford Focus looks like it had the crap be out of it and hasn't been taken care of too well. But I wouldn't say it is a bad car if it has lasted 200,000 miles of abuse. I always say if you beat the crap out of something and don't take care of it you have no right to call it a piece of junk.
The 2000-2004 with 2.0L DOHC Zetec are great engines and non interference too. So are the 2.0L Duratec in the later ones. Only crap one was 2000-2004 SOHC.
Just bought an 02 subaru outback for$500, needed a radiator and a battery, needs two pipes replaced to get ac back. Super smooth, drives perfect. 250k on it. Passenger rear quarter is the only bad rust spot and it isn't all that terrible for being in the rust belt its entire life.
I just sold my old '07 Focus with 245,000K miles on it. The '07 had the L-Engine from Mazda and Ford Auto Transmission. I put a transmission pan drain plug in during the early days and would drain and refill the fluid just like the oil and other fluids. Expensive issues started to pop-up that were more expensive than what the car was worth (emergency cable broke ($400 to replace), front main seal seeped ($800 repair), worn out front sway bar bushings behind subframe ($400 repair), a little rust here and there. Even after 15 years, it still ran and drove pretty darn good, looked pretty good too. I let it go because I wanted something different. I earned it. But I kid you not, that little Focus was 1 heck of a good little car.
@Denis B you never owned a Oldsmobile Achieva. Three weeks after it went out of warranty , it started eating alternators like candy. On the third replacement ,we traded it in and left GM forever.
@Denis B I actually loved that Achieva..30 mpg and fast as hell and drove wonderful and then it just tried to bankrupt my wife and I..GM can go to Hell
No, they would likely notice the bad wiring while doing the diagnosis or repair. Most are unscrupulous so even when they noticed the wiring they would just sell them that too and not mention that the alternator may in fact be fine.
Recently driving from Minnesota to Massachusetts in a 07’ Silverado, as I hit the Indiana state line the battery light came on. Got off at the first exit and replaced the serpentine belt, 5 minutes later problem solved. Sometimes it’s just that easy if you have a clue, have knowledge and don’t PANIC!!
I bought my cousins old 2008 ford focus ses it had 149000 miles on it and didn't go reverse bought it for 1500. After buying it had to get new clutch pads fixed whole powertrain system new alternator new valve cover gasket new ignition coils and spark plugs and new battery terminals
My trick with the 2004 Ford focus that I have is that I use a vacuum pump and suck out the transmission fluid every year or two and replace it. I guess the first time around I replaced the transmission filter too. Replaced the motor mounts which was easy. Replaced the alternator which was a pain and the $100 replacement isn't so great. All in all though I like this car it reminds me of my Mazda protege. Anyway I've had the car for 10 years with no major repairs and it runs fine. Oh I forgot to mention the circuit board in the dash panel had some sort of rust. I took it out and scrubbed it and cleaned it up and it didn't give me any problems after that.
I got my wife’s 03 focus when she got a new car. Transmission went,$600 replaced from junkyard. Alternator, yeah a real pain in back of motor. Fuel pump, regular maintenance. Now has 310 k, radiator n heater core leaking. Might as well fix it n keep driving. I’ve paid off 2 homes while driving it. Thsnks to Scotty for saving me a fortune
I used to have a 2005 Ford Focus ZX5 SES trim level. It got totaled in a bad car accident in early March 2012. I never had any problems with the car. It was fun to drive.
I had a 2004 Ford Focus ZX5 when I got rid of it, it had 150000, I took way better care of it then that car, but it had similar issue and other minor issues, otherwise it was a good car, I only got rid of it to get an F150
I love the Ford Focus I’m on my third one. If I wouldn’t have wrecked the second one I’d still be driving it. Once I had a transmission go out in one and it only cost 1000 bucks to get a used one installed.
I have an 09 focus 730,000 miles on it a year and a half ago I replace the starter still have the original alternator original everything except for brakes and struts and shocks that types of stuff still not burning oil it uses a half pint in a 8000 mile oil change interval I change the fluid in the five speed manual about every 35,000 miles only takes 2 quarts Done nothing but regular maintenance in the six years that I’ve had it with the exception of changing the starter and a power steering pump
The wiring was replaced in a Ford Fusion that was a 2014, it turned after numerous attempts at troubleshooting it was not only the wiring but the alternator had been replaced and they actually pair their alternators by computer so you need the original, not just an OEM but the original alternator that comes with the car. If you rebuild that you can go again but if you don't it's a nightmare of little ghost problems in the electrical. Some of the Escapes from then also had the problem.
My daily driver is a 2005 FX4 ST with 235,000 miles on it. The alternator went out at about 175,000 miles, the slave cylinder went out at about 210,000. Clutch was still good but having to pull the transmission to change it, I replaced the flywheel and clutch too. Replaced a wheel bearing, electric fans, 1 wheel cylinder and it still runs great!! Good A/C, sunroof, etc. I love my little silver bullet! Wrenching on these cars however takes some special knowledge or you can get in trouble. Took me and my brother hours to get the transmission back in. The subframe prevented an easy reinstall because there is very little clearance and getting it at the precise orientation to line up was a MFer!! I saved about $1,500 as the clutch, slave cylinder, and flywheel, were only $285 but labor charges are insane because it’s FWD. All in all though, it’s been a great little car!
Those zetec engines were great. They had timing belts the needed to be changed every 60k miles and they are known for the motor mounts going bad causing vibrations.
I drive a lot around town and needed something that was good on gas.... I got a 2006 Ford Focus (MT) that had 112k miles for 1800. I also turn wrenches on cars and can keep them going...... good to go!
Hate to tell you but all my 8 ford's went over 200,000 miles without issues. Just normal maintenance. Oil & filter changes, and brake pads. Not even TRANNY fluid changes.
Nice job Scotty, I think that Ford will go for a couple years more. Who wants a new POS car with a payment? Love your videos, Thank you !! Living Very Frugal in Massachusetts.
The way to win Scotty over, say you’re car was made in Japan. It could be a Fiat, a Chevy or BMW but if you mention Japan or Germany, he’s already got a smile on his face. lol
Funny thing is, you are partially right! The Japanese are known for taking VERY good care of their vehicles. BUT, they are a very smart, respectful culture - I don’t think they would buy a Mopar or Fiat product LOL
I refuse to ever own a front wheel drive. Everything is crammed in around the engine and if a collision happens, it usually quite expensive. Recently, I bought a O6 Crown Vic P71 police interceptor and I Love it.
I’ll repeat myself. I had a 2002 Ford Focus wagon 4speed automatic And bought used at 100k miles It had a slight shake in park and at stops. After I did spark plugs it stopped and had power like never before..then at 160k I did the alternator and rear struts and drove it to and from NH&CT for 7 years Washed it every once in a while and surprisingly no rust or rot and I lived in the rust belt states.. That car drove til I sold it at 280k miles that car NEVER died or left me stranded! I only had 1 problem When I got it..it would start to overheat but only while idled (thermostat and cooling fan relay) And went away! And that was IT Only reason I sold it was cuz it had 280k and my past experience with fords the auto transmissions never lasted that long! Now it shifted fine but the miles made me nervous.. 2 years after I sold it I saw it driving on the highway in Massachusetts I knew it was my car cuz my custom bumper sticker was still on it Lmao
Saw no leaks and it runs fine , what a Focus-basher he is. Mine is 20.5 yrs. 203K miles everything works great , it's a manual with only cruise control. Ice cold air too.
I purchased the base model 2003 Focus with SOHC engine with a 5 speed manual from my neighbor for $1000 with 75,000 in 2016. Today, I have put 50,000 on it. I replaced the timing belt and the same battery cable and the battery. Outside of oil changes and set front pads and rotors is all this car as needed. My Focus still gets 38 mpg on my 25 mile round trip commute. I’m happy with my Ford Last year I purchased a used 2021 Tacoma 4 cyl for $5000 below MSRP with 20 miles on it since the previous owner fiancé fell through. I should be good on cars for awhile
Scotty I've just finished chemo and purchased a little focus. I've paid too much as is. But now it's been thru 5 mechanics. It's driving it's self. Everything else is fine haha. It's rpms went all wild after a winter freeze jump. Got a new batt. Still screaming. Played with throttle. Have it driving 40 mph on level ground not hitting the gas. Seems to want to stay in 3rd and not drop back down into gear. 109.900 miles.
What's really crazy is this might be the only video on youtube showing how to actually replace battery cables - not just the terminals - and the video is not even titled that so people would not find it on a keyword search.
My daughter's Focus 1st gen was behaving strangly. Electrical problems. Strange lights, radio that would fade in and out. Took it down to local autoparts store and had them run a charging system check. The results showed a weak diode bridge. That alternator was buried on the bottom of the engine facing the firewall. Had to unbolt the engine mounts and remove right tire to get serpentine belt off and tilt the engine in order to drop the alternator. I was not impressed with the build quality. It struck me as a disposable car. Road noise was terrible. Really had to crank the volume.
I have a 2007 Ford Focus with a 5 speed manual transmission and it has 271k miles with the same rims and same color. I've had to have a lot of work done in the 6 years +that I owned it but it runs great and worth every penny
I have a focus 2 L VTEC engine 2006 that I’ve been using for deliveries for the last few years it has well over 250,000 miles now I think it’s at 252 miles ,it’s been a real good car I do the basics to it and it’s the best car I repeat the best car I’ve ever owned and I’ve owned about 15 cars in my lifetime Put gas and go put gas and go again very few repairs other than tires and brakes and had to replace a blown engine mount (when it let go it sounded like an explosion coming from the transmission I thought my car was done 🤧I was doing about 40 miles an hour when it popped ,the engine mount that is)) I have not done any other repairs other than above mentioned and the battery of course is changed every five or seven years I was recommended by Scotty
yea that passanger side engine mount on all the small cars that used that engine tends to fail around the 10 year mark, mostly from the rubber gasket drying out and cracking until the hydrolic fluid seeps out. Might be able to make it last longer by spraying it with liquid silicone, but the mount is so cheap might as well just get a new one
I use to drive one of those older Focuses around delivering copier toner. Would rag the heck out of it lol but it just kept on chugging along without issue for years
Yep. It's the L-Engine from Mazda. It's the previous engine to the now Sky-Active engine. Mazda and Ford collaborated back in the 2000's. The L-Engine was put in the Mazda 3 which people bought like crazy. Remember Zoom, Zoom? Mazda didn't rust proof very well and those cars would fall apart. Ford did rust proof their under-carriage and body parts better, so for a savvy buyer, you would buy the Focus and get the Mazda L-Engine with a better rust-proof body and save a few a dollars. With normal maintenance, the Focus was a good little Econo-Car. I still see some on the road, but never seen the Mazda 3 from that time period. I believe it's because the wheels fell off from rust.
My dad said the same thing to me 15 years ago and didn’t see it to believe it until til now, he’s not even a mechanic but has some decent vehicle knowledge.
I bought a used 2010 Ford Focus,I think it was in in 2013 or 2014,it had 60 something thousand miles on it when my daughter totaled it,a big Nissan SUV t-boned her it was my daughter's fault,it was in 2015.
I had an '08 SES. Fantastic running handling no issues except one. By the time I let it go it was on the third transmission. The first at 44k was in warranty. Dealer kept for a long time. Second was about 74k and I ate the cost, the delaer kept it a long time. I sold it with not alot more miles on it. The engine was fine. Just the tranny was the weak point. And it was tough for me on long trips but OK around local.
These alternator’s on modern cars Only put out 14 volts.. as needed.. Clutch pulley’s.. pcm control’s voltage.. had me thinking alternator Was bad.. but it was okay..🤪
My 2005 Focus ZX3 is still my first car. Only 83k miles on it (yeah, I don't drive much or far). Absolutely love her, but ever since I started doing my own simple repair/maintenance on her....I really wish Ford's designs weren't so convoluted to get to. I also REALLY wish mine didn't have a "Lifetime" air filter.

@@pedrofernandez8729 yeah agree, the original focus was a fantastic value and pretty good car when it came out. I was thinking of replacing my 2004 2x3 and i went to the ford dealership around 2017 to look at the new focus, and i was seriously disappointed in how cheap it felt, to much plastic and the a-pilars seemend really flimsy, unlike my 2004 that has steal body panals, the plastic interior bits are thick and feel sturdy, and the a-pillers are very thick and feels like a cage surrounding. Its a shame but that is what kills these cars in the rust belt (Im in New England). I just bought a 2006 ZXW wagon with 46K original miles and zero rust. I wont be driving it in the winter so hopefully it will last a long time
Dad had 07 ford focus se hatchback when it had 167k gave it to me with 199,992 and today it has now 210,000 on it as we speak🙏
"It Doesnt really hurt anything" .. Scotty's way of saying leave it alone lol
I’ve had 2 mk1 focus’s, now have a mk2 , absolutely brilliant cars 🚙 in my opinion 😀👍
Solid British car design.
My mum has a mk1 focus she's said she will replace it when it dies but she's had it for years and it just keeps going
The mk 1 was well built because it was the successor of the Ford Escort, Ford's bread and butter and their biggest seller.
How can anyone say this is a bad car after it took that 200k miles beating?
Nobody should say that
@Bordi the one he only said it was old & dirty, but he said it still runs pretty good & it’s still dependable
I've seen one of these with a Manual Transmission that had over 535,000km (335,000 miles). still ran like a clock albeit with bad wheel bearings
Its outlasted the EcoBoost new versions
Compared to other cars I guess he wasn’t that impressed but at least it still runs.
There is always someone more stupid than you.
IMPRESSIVE repair Scotty.
99.9% of mechanics would just keep dumping five hundred dollar alternators in it.
Well done, Mr.Kilmer.
ya amen new altenator just for starts....1000 bucks easy hahaha
@Denis B you never owned a Oldsmobile Achieva. Three weeks after it went out of warranty , it started eating alternators like candy. On the third replacement ,we traded it in and left GM forever.
@Denis B I actually loved that Achieva..30 mpg and fast as hell and drove wonderful and then it just tried to bankrupt my wife and I..GM can go to Hell
@@phil4986achieva was......fast? Huh lol
No, they would likely notice the bad wiring while doing the diagnosis or repair. Most are unscrupulous so even when they noticed the wiring they would just sell them that too and not mention that the alternator may in fact be fine.
Take a day off with the Focus and clean it up. Fix the mirror control and other unsightly stuff you can screw back together
My 2013 ford focus lasted 77000 miles mostly trouble free even with the bad transmission (mine was not that bad)... until it hydroplaned in Wyoming
We should appreciate your professionalism. I enjoy listen to explain the details of cars
5:55 shows 140 mph Speedometer .
I figured Scotty would take it down to his " test track " for a run !
Thsnks to Scotty for saving me a fortune
i miss my little wagon.
had 230k on the dash when someone smashed it up. But it still ran great, 5 speed too!
I used to have a 2005 Ford Focus ZX5 SES trim level. It got totaled in a bad car accident in early March 2012. I never had any problems with the car. It was fun to drive.
I have such Focus MK1 estate with 2.0l +Lpg installation, 23yo, oldie but Goldie. Greetings from Poland
I currently have my 2007 Ford focus , almost at 200k miles
In the UK, one of the pick up lines includes, "My love for you is like Ford Cortina", which means it lasts forever.
You’re great Scotty,
Been watching for years. You’re an amazing mechanic, and a person people can trust.
Thank you for all the great content 🤝
I have an 09 focus 730,000 miles on it a year and a half ago I replace the starter still have the original alternator original everything except for brakes and struts and shocks that types of stuff still not burning oil it uses a half pint in a 8000 mile oil change interval I change the fluid in the five speed manual about every 35,000 miles only takes 2 quarts
Done nothing but regular maintenance in the six years that I’ve had it with the exception of changing the starter and a power steering pump
I have a 2007 Ford Focus with 285000 miles on it
The wiring was replaced in a Ford Fusion that was a 2014, it turned after numerous attempts at troubleshooting it was not only the wiring but the alternator had been replaced and they actually pair their alternators by computer so you need the original, not just an OEM but the original alternator that comes with the car.
I wish auto companies spent less money telling people how great they are and put more money into building better vehicles.
My 2010 Focus had over 300000 miles before i got rid of it. Basically just tires brakes and suspension work. Nothing crazy went wrong under the hood
To the funniest mechanic I watch besides my dad... How much would labor be to repair 2004 svt focus piston rings?
My 06 focus was a great car for what I paid for it and for how long I drove it. $1900 drove it 3 years and sold it for 2500
The way to win Scotty over, say you’re car was made in Japan.
No. No love for Germany. Nice try though
Thank you, Scotty, for simplifying a scary task. 👍
I’ve had multiply focuses and never have issues. They have problems but very cheap to fix
Earl Scheib would make that repair complete.
My Focus required an alternator. Alternator was sandwiched low between the engine and firewall. Took two guys half a day to R and R it.
I paid a mobile mechanic to replace mine after eyeballing from every angle and saying, “Nah.” Big hands and little patience for that job.
“It’s not about the car, it’s about the driver.” Dom Toretto
Very good point
Good cars; revolutionary at the time. Scotty with 5M subscribers still fixing cars!
Very nice to see scotty working on the car, great firsthand experience
I got a 2005 zx3 and its got 291,768 miles and i haven't has to replace much
Great video! I love it when you are working on cars, I have learned so much from you! Thank you!
I refuse to ever own a front wheel drive. Everything is crammed in around the engine and if a collision happens, it usually quite expensive. Recently, I bought a O6 Crown Vic P71 police interceptor and I Love it.
I’ll repeat myself. I had a 2002 Ford Focus wagon 4speed automatic
And bought used at 100k miles
It had a slight shake in park and at stops. After I did spark plugs it stopped and had power like never before..then at 160k I did the alternator and rear struts and drove it to and from NH&CT for 7 years
Washed it every once in a while and surprisingly no rust or rot and I lived in the rust belt states..
That car drove til I sold it at 280k miles that car NEVER died or left me stranded! I only had 1 problem
When I got it..it would start to overheat but only while idled (thermostat and cooling fan relay)
And went away! And that was IT
Only reason I sold it was cuz it had 280k and my past experience with fords the auto transmissions never lasted that long! Now it shifted fine but the miles made me nervous..
2 years after I sold it I saw it driving on the highway in Massachusetts
I knew it was my car cuz my custom bumper sticker was still on it Lmao
Owned my ‘18 fiesta st for almost 2 years and I enjoy every time I drive it!😁
Saw no leaks and it runs fine , what a Focus-basher he is. Mine is 20.5 yrs. 203K miles everything works great , it's a manual with only cruise control. Ice cold air too.
Good tip: pull on the wire and see what happens. Another good one.
I’m happy with my Ford
Last year I purchased a used 2021 Tacoma 4 cyl for $5000 below MSRP with 20 miles on it since the previous owner fiancé fell through. I should be good on cars for awhile
When Scotty says "Dependable transportation device" I hear the phrase "Depending on hairspray device"
Change the motor mounts and it should fix the shaking. Mine has almost 200k miles and it drives very smooth.
Ps the matt isn't hitting the pad the young bloods love to pick on me instead of help the problem
"It does go backwards. And it goes forward."
We're good then? 😂
I got 246k out of mine before I gave it to someone I know. It was still running fine then. That is Toyota level reliability.
Well old is gold
I had a 2005 ford focus was very reliable and easy to fix
This car is pretty great.
It's a good thing that it looks like someone nobody wants to steal.
I didn't think those throw away cars would make 192k miles
Good afternoon Scotty hope you and yours are having a GREAT day BROTHER ! 🖐🖐🙂
afternoon!
I have a 2007 Ford Focus with a 5 speed manual transmission and it has 271k miles with the same rims and same color. I've had to have a lot of work done in the 6 years +that I owned it but it runs great and worth every penny
Scotty Kilmer! I just drove through Clarksville TN on Sunday and ate at Taco Loco! Awesome food!!!
I have a focus 2 L VTEC engine 2006 that I’ve been using for deliveries for the last few years it has well over 250,000 miles now I think it’s at 252 miles ,it’s been a real good car I do the basics to it and it’s the best car I repeat the best car I’ve ever owned and I’ve owned about 15 cars in my lifetime
Put gas and go put gas and go again
very few repairs other than tires and brakes and had to replace a blown engine mount (when it let go it sounded like an explosion coming from the transmission I thought my car was done 🤧I was doing about 40 miles an hour when it popped ,the engine mount that is))
I have not done any other repairs other than above mentioned and the battery of course is changed every five or seven years I was recommended by Scotty
yea that passanger side engine mount on all the small cars that used that engine tends to fail around the 10 year mark, mostly from the rubber gasket drying out and cracking until the hydrolic fluid seeps out. Might be able to make it last longer by spraying it with liquid silicone, but the mount is so cheap might as well just get a new one
Try that with the newer Focus
If Ford just now pissed you off, then you haven't been working on them very long . . .
Always amazing dudes like this do this in hours which would take me months.
Lmao when he threw the new battery assembly on the ground. This guy is a national treasure.
Ford stands for "fix or repair daily"
My dad said the same thing to me 15 years ago and didn’t see it to believe it until til now, he’s not even a mechanic but has some decent vehicle knowledge.
I love how he called it a "reliable transportation device." That's what I call my teenagers' vehicle.
You guessed it Scotty bad wiring draining the alternator. The alternator is probably fried now too.
Beat to s*** not taking care of and still running . Sounds like a pretty tough little car to me. Especially being an old car.
I bought a used 2010 Ford Focus,I think it was in in 2013 or 2014,it had 60 something thousand miles on it when my daughter totaled it,a big Nissan SUV t-boned her it was my daughter's fault,it was in 2015.
Toyota wires / plastics after 20 years are more durable than most of the new garbage.
I'm surprised it has an OEM windshield. Either it's never been replaced or the owner spent too much on the replacement.
Automatic?
It's not a FoMoCo problem, Scotty. It's improper battery maintenance. Don't slam the FoMoCo!
I had a brand new ford that died during a test drive at the dealership. I say the salesman was pretty embarrassed.
I shall destroy the FoMoCo
These alternator’s on modern cars
Only put out 14 volts.. as needed..
Clutch pulley’s.. pcm control’s voltage.. had me thinking alternator
Was bad.. but it was okay..🤪
Leaking battery acid, ignored. Much trouble.
That air filter is probably getting replaced on my 07. I’m looking at the box that allows the filter to be replaced.
@@ithinkaboutthings9052 Your 07 has a standard box with a replaceable filter inside? I wish mine did. Mine has an entire unit with a non-servicable foam filter sealed inside.
@@RiotShieldMan No, no. Sorry for the confusion. Mine has the regular “lifetime” setup. I’m thinking about replacing it with an aftermarket box that allows the filter to be cleaned/replaced. The Ford replacement is about $600.
Where do u get it?
I had a 2002 zx3 in high school.. good car. the focus from 2011-2016 is pure garbage
scotty, did u hear about the f250 that had an accident n apparently the report said the truck should have been a convertible. top was beyond weak. sued for 1.7 billion!!!! ford lost and now appealing it.
You did disconnect the battery so the lights would immediatly reset
not charging light
Motor mounts on these are famous for going bad quickly.
one of mine went bad around 140k on my 2004 2.3 zx3, i was able to replace it myself with a car jack and a socket wrench. dont remember how much it cost but it probably wasnt more than 50$
@@nn-dj2nu Same for my co-worker, did it himself. He got the car cheap cause the woman owner thought it was about to have a major engine failure, so she let him have it real cheap (pre-pandemic)
@@pedrofernandez8729 nice for him. I didnt really want a focus, but my mom used to work for Ford, and she got me a really good deal on my focus, i took it for a test drive and was shocked at how zippy it felt and how good it handled. It has been one of the best cars i have ever owned.
@@nn-dj2nu And then they put in that stupid DCT and screwed it up, ditto for the Fiesta.
Plus the price, what happened? i bought my 2004 focus for 9 grand, and they wanted something like 20 grand for a base model 2017.
