I bought that same battery tester on Scotty's recommendation, and I love it. I've used it for coworkers, friends & roommates cars. I also got 1 of those battery jump starters thanks to Scotty. I had to jump my car a couple times, roommates cars. Some lady at the Walmart parking lot... I also got one for my best friend for her birthday (it was a "dad" gift). My roommates bought their own battery jump starters too because they saw how handy mine was. All thanks to Mr Scotty!!
Yes a must have ppls with these newer cars don't want to give you a jump so it's best to keep you that jump starter in the car now you can drive in peace.
I highly recommend the DeWalt tire inflator. They are incredibly fast and it runs off the same battery as your drills. Also has a flashlight and a blower function.

Spraying Fluid Film on your undercarriage every fall helps fight the salt and rust problem. My Minnesota truck doesn't have any rust and they really pile on the salt around here. LOL
This is the key. I love the fluid film undercoating. I do this and rinse my car’s suspension, wheel wheels, and undercarriage with salt away and so far that’s proved to be a solid formula.
@@johnlowe2218 I've also found it useful to use WD-40 blast inside the door frames, and in the wheel wells, just to repel that salty water. Dirt sticks to it, of course, so my truck looks like crap all winter, but so far... no rust! LOL
@@randomspirit Hey anything beats rust! Yeah I spray the fluid film in the door frames and little holes too for that same reason. My 2008 looks pretty clean overall.
@@johnlowe2218 I decided to go with the WD-40 in the door frames because Fluid Film makes a gooey mess that would end up on my pants legs...or all over my dog as he climbs in and out. LOL It seems to be working so far (Truck is a 2021).
@@randomspirit That makes sense. Fluid film does stink and makes a gross oily mess. I pretty much throw away whatever shirt I wear whenever applying it each year because it pretty much smells like a barn lol. I don’t argue with whatever keeps rust away!
I live in Canada, and i personally find that using snow tires is some of the best winter insurance i can get…using all season tires here in winter scares me, as i have done it before… lol.
I did some involved research on tires…my local tire store has an all winter radial tire…it has more bite for the road and if feels much better on the road. Winter or summer these tires are great. I get 3-4 years out of a set of 4 plus I am doing DoorDash.
Thank you, Scotty. There sure are a lot of people out here that you are helping with this video especially with this cold weather that’s coming into the Tennessee area.
Lmao crazy.. this happened to me 2 days ago. Car battery just died out of nowhere. Got it jumped and it would hold a charge but i only had about 2 stop and starts before it would be sketchy and not start again. Replaced it yesterday works like a champ again.
Scotty I bought a battery tester like yours . Then I bought 4 new Batteries for my class 8 truck . Before installing the batteries I decided to try out the new tester I bought . 3 batteries passed the capacity test and one failed . Took the one failed battery back to the store . They tested it with their high priced tester . Fail . They brought out another new battery for the exchange . Another fail .second exchanged battery passed . So from now on whenever I buy new batteries , I will take my tester with me .
Those boosters are very handy if you travel during the winter. I’ve got a noco back in my civic. I’m not too worried of having starting issues on my civic because i use the defa system to charge it while it is plugged in for heating, but in case some people got starting issues, i can help them. It also got usb socket for charging other devices, and a very powerful worklight. It is small enough to fit in your backpack, so if you are camping you can use it as a powerbank too.
In order to drive in the winter, you have to be able to get into your vehicle. A good tip to mention is for drivers to treat the door seals with silicone or wax to keep the doors from freezing shut before you encounter freezing weather. If they do freeze shut, use cold water to free them. Do not used heated water because it could cause your vehicles expensive windows to crack.
Very helpful tip. I use silicone because I think it lasts longer. 1 thing that people tend to forget is to lubricate the hood latch. The reason is if you have to jump-start your battery, but the hood won't open because it's too cold now you are stranded and cold.
My wife’s car is a ford focus and we live in upstate NY. So it gets cold. Her car is a 2015. We bought brand new. We have had no trouble with her battery never had to change it.
Yep, go get a booster pack and always have it in the trunk of the car. So far I've helped others a couple of times with that and only had to use it myself about two times the past five years.
Walmart Scotty, Walmart or Costco for battery I say Walmart because there’s a Walmart in every small town, so if you have trouble and your battery goes kaput usually a Walmart nearby👌
Walmart actually has a pretty decent battery brand called everstart. I've used them up here in Canada and they usually last the full 5 years which is standard battery life sometimes longer. They start in the cold. I heard a rumor that they're actually manufactured by the Interstate battery company
I carry a booster it’s also an inflates my tire, should I keep it inside in the winter? Hate to lug it back and fourth but I’m a cheapskate and I wanna get the most out of my battery. Buying a new one next month but I haven’t needed the booster yet either!
I know the blue is common Automotive shop towels, but, I rather have white so I can see the true color of the fluid I am checking. Much like tolit paper, you want to see the color not something blue or grean... Is the pink fluir starting to change, break fluid... getting darker. Not something a Blue shop towel will tell you, checking you car, you need white paper. Or, just pull the dip stick when cold, the level & color is easy to see...
The need is inherently unpredictable, so just keep it charged in general. My own says to top it off once a month; I also do whenever I use it to start a car.
We in Canada call All-Season tires 'No Seasons' or 'All California Seasons' because they are useless with ice. All weather tires are a decent compromise, if you need em.
Yeah, proud grandfather that advocates removing your catalytic converter if your state doesn’t require smog inspections. The hell with the future generations air quality.
Blizzaks snow tires are actually good for ice and there are many other tires that are good for ice. Michelin makes an arctic ice. Firestone makes winter force and mud and snow. Tires cannot compare to these tires.
lol. This past fall replaced my battery ( 7yrs old ). It failed me. CAA boosted to get me going. Figure I'm good for 5 more years at least ( as well as the car ) lol.
I keep a jack and tire changing kit with plugs of course, then a tire pump, jump pack, battery tender, code reader, extension cables, coolant, water, and oil. In a 2021 Frontier... I'm paranoid as hell from my life of beaters
I disagree on the all (three) season tires. For the first year and they're brand new, you might be able to get away running them for one winter. If you live in a place that gets a fair amount of snow like i do, or do a fair amount of winter driving, I highly recommend a good set of winter tires. Are they cheap? Not exactly, but worth it in my opinion. The amount of people I see around here driving on all seasons in the snow, they should have just stayed home.
For windshield, use the orange stuff with wax. Do not mix it with blue. It keeps a nice layer of wax so snow and salt falls right off when on the freeway. I've used it in -10, no problem.
I moved to a mountain town in Colorado from Florida, and I had my all season tires and the wiper fluid I had in Florida. Basically the wiper fluid froze the entire winter, because winter up here at 9-10k feet, once you get into Late December, you're not getting above freezing until about mid April to Early May. So basically my wiper fluid was frozen the entire first winter I was here. My all season tires were rock solid when driving because it would stay in the teens and 20s every day. Luckily I worked from home and everything was in walking distance, so I didn't have to drive hardly at all. But holy crap when I had to drive, it was scary. My Subaru now has a brand new set of snow rated all weather tires for most of the year and I have a nice pair of snow tires. The difference is night and day. If you have AWD with snow tires, you're not going to get stuck, and you're not going to be slipping and sliding as much. Plus, you know, you can actually stop because your tires aren't hard as stone, they stay soft. I also put in wiper fluid rated for the weather here, and I keep about 2 gallons of the stuff in my car at all times because you have to use it so much.
You can actually pop the tops on some batteries (but do it CAREFULLY, watch out for battery acid splashes) and fill the battery with ONLY distilled water to the top of the metal polls inside each hole. -Battery is as good as new.
Thanks for all of your advice and guidance. I have become a better "home" mechanic due to your videos. I have also increased my tool collection based on your recommendations! My grown kids ask my advice when they have any vehicle issues. I'm a retired kindergarten teacher! Common sense is the best!
Thanks, Team Scotty: all good points; interestingly, I prefer the CIG liter/ 12 V “ Charger\ Starter , & Air Pumps”, Winter ***Studded ***Tires, All Synthetc Oils,& Premium Oil Filters!! (*one LONG winter EXPERIENCES ,& others OVER THE YEARS , ESPECIALLY: with new “ Kuomo (Sp?) Brand in 2016-7, All season SNOW/ Mud Rated**” ,*& worthless on miles of Black ice/Frosted/Ice Melt/snow pack roads ) here in HELENA MT. ETC. ..((Actually, 2WD , with STUDDED WINTERS ( maybe good Brands ,HAKKAPEILITA?) appear to be much better than 4X Drive: esp. braking, turning, tracking, controlling)).
For sure. When I was still driving my beater, I turned it all off before I turned the truck off. It worked well for me for years that way... at least until my pops hooked the battery backwards. Fun times.
try Fanttik cordless air compressor for car - personally use and really like - low to zero hassle factor and good quality - so Fanttik you can now send me some tip $$$
I always mount a set of dedicated winter tires to steel rims and use them from the beginning of December to the end of March. I also never wash under my car because I coat everything under the car myself 2 or 3 times per year with Fluid-Film rustproofing oil.
You live in TN. You should be promoting REAL batteries, from TN. XS Power Batteries! They're $200 to $500 each, but they will never leave you stranded, ever. They're AGM batteries, good for race cars, car audio, and more than great as just regular starting batteries. When everyone else can't start their car after it sits 2 or 3 days when it's 5 or 10 degrees out, you'll be able to let yours sit for a whole week or two and start her right up!
I had a 6years old battery, still could start the car at -40C, but it was a good battery, trash ones will never last that much. Also Check the spark plugs, if you have less fire, you’ll have a harder time starting😅
Hey Scotty..Hope you can help me on this one. My 08 Saturn Vue's ,Heating system has 6?, settings yet the first 3 settings only exterior vents work in cold mos. I've tried to turn the exterior off but not able to, the floor vents only uses interior (locking the cold air out) question; how do I stop the cold exterior vent to stop opening? Thanks from Michigan
THIS is my new all time Scotty video. There's just something about your personality and attitude that I really find endearing in this video. Thank you for bringing a smile to my face on a frigid Chicago day 🥶
Hey Scotty, my 2006 matrix xr have an extremely slow coolant loss, there is no visible leaks it could be either burning or evaporating somewhere, it usually loses coolant fully from reservoir and starts losing thru radiator every year or so, not sure if its a headgasket or could be a rad cap or something similar, what you recommend me to do or replace? thanks in advance you're the best!
I started buying all of our batteries from AAA that way I don't have to mess with it and they come replace it for free because they never last the entire warranty time
I have a 2004 jeep liberty. If it sits longer than two weeks it cranks but won't start. I gotta jump start it. Starter? Like my Jeep but its draining my bank account. 😐
I'd spend the money for a better battery if I planned on keeping the car. Batteries are one of those items where you really do get what you pay for. (tires are another one)
You'll be sorry. Never buy a battery from rural King. They're straight up junk. Not just my opinion, I have personal experience with multiple batteries
Where in the world can you get a $59.00 battery that has a 3 year warranty? I think Scotty was mistaken, $59.00 batteries have a one year warranty at best; at least where I live.
There's only 2-3 battery manufacturers they all come from the same place and different stores slap a sticker with their brand on it ended up getting mine from Sams club for 120 why pay over 200 at an auto part store when it's the same battery

Did you seriously just use a poop on toilet paper reference?? 🧻 💩🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Scotty one of the Real people!
Always great videos
Make sure the booster is charged, especially if you need to use it.
The need is inherently unpredictable, so just keep it charged in general. My own says to top it off once a month; I also do whenever I use it to start a car.
@@nthgth Just gave someone a jump two days ago so gave it a charge.
They also make walnut Hull winter tires, I find them better than studded tires, they grip to the ice pretty good!!
Just replaced my Danali battery. $190 auto zone 2yr.Costco was $179.
We in Canada call All-Season tires 'No Seasons' or 'All California Seasons' because they are useless with ice. All weather tires are a decent compromise, if you need em.
"3 season tires"
Scotty Kilmer.... proud father, proud grandfather, proud father-in-law, dedicated husband, All American Hero!!!! One love Mr Kilmer😊
Yeah, proud grandfather that advocates removing your catalytic converter if your state doesn’t require smog inspections. The hell with the future generations air quality.
@sdcoinshooter ....A political reply to a non political comment 🙄 👎
@@sdcoinshooter Feel better now hero?
Ahhh shut up

Love your videos Mr. Scotty.
Love ya Scotty! Thanks for the great advice! Be safe out there!!
Love all your Advice
Blizzaks snow tires are actually good for ice and there are many other tires that are good for ice. Michelin makes an arctic ice. Firestone makes winter force and mud and snow. Tires cannot compare to these tires.
Very good stuff to know thanks Scotty!
You can buy a extension air hose for them .
Manual transmission will really help in winter condition.
How? My last car had trouble going into 2nd when it was cold, never had that problem with an auto.
(I'll always swear by manual though)
@@nthgth It allows you to start off in 2nd gear to not spin the wheels taking off, or you can utilize engine braking to slow down.
Great work!
I don't understand why people would buy wiper fluid that freezes. I don't even think they sell that stuff here, I've never seen it.
Big difference between dedicated snow tires and all season tires.
Electric parking brakes require a good battery to work properly(release).
Don’t retire!!
Thank you👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
My 2016 Ford F150… Original battery… Tires… Etc… A little love goes a long way.💯🇺🇸
You can actually pop the tops on some batteries (but do it CAREFULLY, watch out for battery acid splashes) and fill the battery with ONLY distilled water to the top of the metal polls inside each hole. -Battery is as good as new.
Not anymore ya can't.
Love my Topdon BT200
A booster in the "trunk" beats standing around with jumper cables.Hoping some kind Soul will stop and help.Cheers,Walker
One more thing, when you get out of your car in the winter, turn the heater off, radio off, try and pull as few Amps as possible when starting.
Very true.... Most people don't know this
I do this all year round. I also drive a 90 honda Accord daily, so any help I can give it to start I do.
For sure. When I was still driving my beater, I turned it all off before I turned the truck off. It worked well for me for years that way... at least until my pops hooked the battery backwards. Fun times.
Good advice all the time...
Always
try Fanttik cordless air compressor for car - personally use and really like - low to zero hassle factor and good quality - so Fanttik you can now send me some tip $$$
Ty scoty I luv u
You can occasionally find good batteries at a junkyard
NAPA batts are King.

Thank you for your common sense advice! Could you provide a tip button, your recommendations save me money. so, you should be compensated.
Thanks, Scoot! Much obliged.
I always mount a set of dedicated winter tires to steel rims and use them from the beginning of December to the end of March. I also never wash under my car because I coat everything under the car myself 2 or 3 times per year with Fluid-Film rustproofing oil.
Do you coat under the car in the spring and summer?
@@donjamel5228 Yes, Spring, summer and fall. I also spray inside the door drains, rocker panels and fenders.
That tin man was diabolical Asf 😈🤣
I had a 6years old battery, still could start the car at -40C, but it was a good battery, trash ones will never last that much. Also Check the spark plugs, if you have less fire, you’ll have a harder time starting😅
Where do you find such chap batteries? RURAL KING EFB - CCA: 620 $199.99
You're supposed to check all these things BEFORE Winter, not when it snows.
What’s you feeling on the Optima battery I know they cost more are they a better battery, plus I do have a Jumpbox in the car
Mr Scott, how good is a 2006 Nissan Altima?
THIS is my new all time Scotty video. There's just something about your personality and attitude that I really find endearing in this video. Thank you for bringing a smile to my face on a frigid Chicago day 🥶
My 2019 Toyota RAV4 still has the original battery. Just had it checked and it's fine.
😮😊
My 2018 Ford Transit 250 van is still using original battery...
Can a weak battery cause lower gas mileage in the city?
No, they actually increase mileage.
Batteries are all rebranded with a different label... I still sick with interstate myself
Great advice Scotty.
Get winter tires, it’s worth it. All seasons never have the same grip.
I love winter in Hawaii.
Got a good fire extinguisher? 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
🏝
I think it rains more on Oahu during the winter than it does here in the northeast. At least it seemed that way when I lived in Hawaii.
Have fun being stuck on an island and paying 10 times more for everything. Fun to visit, but I wouldn't live there.
Cool 😎
Am I the only person who thinks Scotty's voice sounds exactly like Scuttle from the original animated " The little Mermaid " Disney movie LMAO
Thanks Scotty!
my last car I left the original battery in for 6 years until it just wouldn't start. I just forgot to change it
6 years that’s amazing!
I bought a 2007 tacoma in 2015, when i replaced the battery in 2019, I found out it was the original battery. it lasted 12 years.
Rock salt, and salt brine.
Don’t drive your car when the road is salty.
Walking is better…
I use Jack Daniel in my windshield washer 😅
Excellent choice 😂
Nope too expensive I prefer to drink it myself
Bro my 05 cts costs around $200 for a basic battery
Excellent information!
I'd spend the money for a better battery if I planned on keeping the car. Batteries are one of those items where you really do get what you pay for. (tires are another one)
Ford is one of few to offer a 3-year warranty and may make one that fits your non-Ford.
I had a battery that lasted 11 years on my Grand Marquis
Come on man! Put a decent battery in your vehicle, they’re too important to skimp on.
i just push start cuz i drive manual
You'll be sorry. Never buy a battery from rural King. They're straight up junk. Not just my opinion, I have personal experience with multiple batteries
-not just my opinion
-I have personnal experience…
While I have no doubt about the battery quality, I think your statement is contradictory
Where in the world can you get a $59.00 battery that has a 3 year warranty? I think Scotty was mistaken, $59.00 batteries have a one year warranty at best; at least where I live.
Of all the things to cheap out on, batteries are not one of them. Especially up North
There's only 2-3 battery manufacturers they all come from the same place and different stores slap a sticker with their brand on it ended up getting mine from Sams club for 120 why pay over 200 at an auto part store when it's the same battery
There are very few batterie maufacures in the us if they are leadacid they are all the same just make sure the date is close to when you buy it.
