This movie is my all time favorite. How does it change my life? Well, everytime I wake up I now can understand that life can be cruel with me, but if I sacrifice and fight for what I believe even if nobody believes in you, some day you will get what you deserve. This movie gave me "hope" to keep going in life. It touches my heart in such a way that very few movies have done it before (perhaps Schindler list). A truely Masterpiece.
The title of this video made me do a double take: "Mark Kermode Pans Labyrinth" Really? Labyrinth was great! I'd have thought even Kermode would like it!
When I first saw Pans Labyrinth I didn't expect to see what I saw.. and I walked out of the theater like i'd just gotten off a rollercoaster. It's such a beautiful touching film. Del Toro's finest work.
Go see Pan's Labyrinth or have a beer. You could have both while watching it in a cinema that serves alcohol. 😂 The times I saw it at the cinema (either 9 or 10 times) I always watched it with a glass of wine. 🍷👍 The film is a masterpiece. My number 1 film of all time.
Sometimes, especially during one of Mark's rants or eulogies, I wonder what is the point of Simon Mayo. This episode highlights why he's there - to affectionately keep Mark's feet on the ground. I love these two.
These two are enduring and wonderful together, bounce off each other’s personalities. The fact I love movies is a bonus, I’d happily hear them talk about shades of grey, no not the book.
Pefectly critiqued- my favourite film and also the best film Ive ever seen- it lingered for months after I watched it- No film has ever had such an effect on me.
first film with subtitles ive ever really GOT, ive since watched Cronos and im really enjoying his films. All down to Kermode, he guides us through the labyrinth of bad films to find the good ones
Yes, this film is a masterpiece, because every single fantasu clitched (generic evil villans, escape to a fantasy world, generic girl in fantasy world), is expored nd brought-out perfectly.
Candidate for best film made, certainly the most artistic and beautiful piece I've ever seen. It re-energised my love for films, making me realise films are first and foremost the telling of a story. I agree with the idea if being able to sit through the onslaught of bad/average films, the knowledge that films like this are possible keeps me going to see them.
Why not eh? We say Michelangelo’s David or the Sistine chapel are beautiful pieces of art, but why not a film? And to be honest, I think this film made me feel far more things than those two ever did!
Personally, I think the only people who don't appreciate the film as much are people who do not understand/care for/appreciate the deeper meanings of film, cinema and genre. The film's cinematography is stunning and visually it is magical. All the deeper meanings of the film are incredibly meaningful, inspiring and almost enlightening. I won't carry on into too much detail to what they are but when Kermode said that the film had changed his life in a way, I could understand what he meant.
I wanted the satisfaction of hearing Kermode give film of the week to a Bond film, and low and behold, Casino Royale gets reviewed the same week as a milestone like Pan's Labyrinth. Rotten luck cos most other weeks I'm sure it would've beaten the competition.
I just rewatched Pan’s Labyrinth and it’s somehow even better than when I watched it years ago... I think being a little older and theoretically wiser I saw so much more in it, and absolute delight even when it’s so awful I can barely watch
Kermode's right, this is a wonderful film, and no matter how bad the supernatural creatures are, the humans, especially the Fascist captain, are worse.
One of my favorite movies of all time, but don't go in expecting it to change your life. Maybe you'll sleep a little less pondering the movie when you see it though
Director Guillermo Del Toro delivers one of the most iconic, most stylishly frightening & one of the best films made as the film deserves to be one of the best horror films in the history of film. (100%) (5/5 stars) (positive)
There's almost NOTHING to criticise about this film, it's an extraordinary work of cinema. So why is it that, despite all my admiration, this film makes me feel almost nothing towards it. I've seen it three times and each time it leaves me cold.
@trentkill You said it should have won oscars, while it already did. "How underrated it is" is a completely another matter which I would not discuss... especially here, on youtube comments section.
This film is the 2nd best film ever made IMO,it's only the 2nd best because after repeated watching of both films,I would say the devils backbone(also a 'Del Toro film)just tops it.As a coupling they truely are the best of film,I don't know how 'Del Toro is going to top them, although the hellboy films were as good as blockbuster style films get, only he could do the Mike Mignolas hellboy comic books justice!
@ellbo2 Having not seen a huge ammount from that year, there's not much else to choose from. You're right to mention The Departed, but there was also Red Road, Inland Empire, The Host, United 93, This Is England as well as documentaries like Jesus Camp. I'd even rate the likes of Little Miss Sunshine and Children Of Men as films I'd rather re-visit Pan's Labyrinth.
@pancakeday2006 I think it's the best film of the year, which films do you think is better? Looking though the list of films released in 2006, there are some AWFUL films, only The Departed comes close.
Pity to see childish arguments breaking out even here. Anyhoo... I've been evangelising about this to my friends at uni far too much recently, I'm gonna have to show it to them. I reckon that what makes the horror and violence particularly striking is just how beautiful the aesthetic is; an ugly, coarse film just doesn't have the same effect. It's like how the monster's elegance in Alien makes it so unnerving.
@pancakeday2006 Yeah I'm with you. The story left me completely cold, the main character was flat, and the whole thing was rather humorless (Yes, I know the setting was bleak, but even so.) Kermode goes as far as to say it's the best film of the decade. Really? Better than There Will Be Blood or City of God?
"It's a life changing experience" "In what way has your life changed by seeing the film?" Umm, it's called 'hyperbole', obviously he didn't mean it literally.
It's not often that I disagree with Mark Kermode and generally regard him as THE leading British critic but, on this rare occassion, I don't share his praise of Pan's Labyrinth. A well made fantasy, certainily. But best film of that year? Definitely not.
Have to say that 9 out of 10 times, I to largely agree with Mark’s views on movies (except perhaps for The Last Jedi, but that may be because he’s not a Star Wars fan?). The description of the movie would never make me want to watch it, but after being entranced by the Faun and the fairy eating monster, I had to watch it. GDT is incredible, and this arguably should have been a launchpad to EVEN greater things. How good would some Star Wars movies be with GDT at the helm!!?? (Possibly more about other creatures than just Stormtroopers fighting Jedi etc)
It's "life changing" because the critic had seen a series of bad films and then saw this one. That's how it transformed his life! 1). A series of mistakes followed by something that is not a mistake brings him joy so he heralds it "life changing" 2). How many bad films did he see and what does it say about his judgement 3). What kind of critique is this? I watched championship football before watching Swansea, therefore Swansea must be a great team! Can someone please give me a more compelling reason to watch the film as I hear (from others) it is very good.
I like Kermode and I respect his views and opinions but when he doesn't let anyone else have an opinion or just says "you're wrong", well, that's just ignorance and big-headedness. Any critic should be open to debate but, as seen here, he just brushes aside anything negative to be said about this film. It's poor and it gets rather annoying.
Great film but Mark Kermode over eggs the cake by descending into unjustified hyperbole, requiring Simon Mayo to "clarify" exactly what he means. It's not Citizen Kane though.
Josh Allen I completely agree but that doesn't mean it is still a masterpiece. Time was harsh on Citizen Kane. Another example: Psycho was amazing too 50 years ago, but that doesn't mean it's still good. It is just an common horror flick by today's standards.. It's just that some people put some things on a pedestal and aren't able to remove them no matter what. It's just sad:P
The film's good but it's not THAT good. Kermode's overstatement set me up to be disappointed by it when I saw it. What about some of the poorly defined characters-- the terminator-like evil stepfather; the airy-headed mother who marries him and seems not to notice his sadism or the fact that he's a fascist; the over-rought violence and gore; the limited dunn colour palette? Again it's good, but it's not impeccably flawless. Grow up Mark.
its better not to overpump films b4 people see them....better to tel them just watch it. i dont like any background of a film b4 i c it, maybe just the genre....i know that makes a critics job redundant....he can be more like admin clerk....label and distribute
I'm glad I had not heard this review before I saw the movie because I would have had my expectations absolutely crushed. I think it is a very mediocre movie.
This movie is my all time favorite. How does it change my life? Israel Borquez Damn right
The title of this video made me do a double take: "Mark Kermode Pans Labyrinth"
Really? Labyrinth was great! I'd have thought even Kermode would like it!
"The problem with most movies is that they're not Citizen Kane" One of my all time quotes now.
It is brilliant, the music, the casting, the acting, the cinematography all excellent.
I miss the days when movies were still shot on film.
When I first saw Pans Labyrinth I didn't expect to see what I saw.. and I walked out of the theater like i'd just gotten off a rollercoaster. It's such a beautiful touching film. Del Toro's finest work.
One of best films I've ever seen!
One of the greatest movies ever made.
Chris Reynolds I think it's the greatest film ever made
Miles Unsworth,
There are too many great films out there for me to agree with you. But in the end it's your opinion so I'm not saying you're wrong. :)
+Miles Unsworth It is! period!
Chris Reynolds
Masterpiece
lol I’ve seen it all
Go see Pan's Labyrinth or have a beer.
You could have both while watching it in a cinema that serves alcohol. 😂
The times I saw it at the cinema (either 9 or 10 times) I always watched it with a glass of wine. 🍷👍
The film is a masterpiece. My number 1 film of all time.
"If you only see one film this year...that probably means you're a new parent"
-James Acaster
I was fighting not to cry at the end. For all its gore, I find it absolutely beautiful!
This movie is a masterpiece in every aspect. A true hidden gem
The best film of 2006, right next to Children of Men, helmed by another great Mexican director lol
Such a beautiful film, I am always captivated by it...
Sometimes, especially during one of Mark's rants or eulogies, I wonder what is the point of Simon Mayo. This episode highlights why he's there - to affectionately keep Mark's feet on the ground. I love these two.
one of my favorite movies ever
Pan's Labyrinth is legit movie magic.
Just this second finished watching Pans Labyrinth. Kermode is right on the money, the film is amazing.
The first film to ever make me cry in the cinema.
This movie brought tears to my eyes, a true movie masterpiece
Such a beautiful and amazing film.
I really liked Pans Labyrinth. Very dark with an amazing twist.🙏🏴
A simply amazing film
saw this movie an incredibly long time ago. all I can say is it sticks with you
the only thing i ever remember from the movie is that it's spanish, and that monster with the hand-eyes. maybe i should watch it again.
Best movie I've seen in my life.
first film with subtitles ive ever really GOT, ive since watched Cronos and im really enjoying his films. All down to Kermode, he guides us through the labyrinth of bad films to find the good ones
Brilliantly put.
I agree, it is amazing film.
"Pan's Labyrinth" is a masterpiece. I hope Guillermo gets round to making a Lovecraft movie one day as I know he is a big fan and would do it justice.
Yes, this film is a masterpiece, because every single fantasu clitched (generic evil villans, escape to a fantasy world, generic girl in fantasy world), is expored nd brought-out perfectly.
Along with Del Toros 'The Devils Backbone' this is one of the greatest films I've ever seen!

One of my all time fav movies.
Mark was right, this is flawless and is the citizen Kane of fantasy cinema
Just got around to watching this, the good doctor is not wrong, beautiful film
This movie is so so so beautiful
OUTSTANDING
Finally this review is on youtube. Cheers! :)
Personally, I think the only people who don't appreciate the film as much are people who do not understand/care for/appreciate the deeper meanings of film, cinema and genre. Totally agree - an outstanding film
I just rewatched Pan’s Labyrinth and it’s somehow even better than when I watched it years ago... I think being a little older and theoretically wiser I saw so much more in it, and absolute delight even when it’s so awful I can barely watch
It's the joint best film of the 21st century. Tied with Parasite and No country for old men.
"it's not me over hyping the movie, it's actually every bit as good as I'm saying it is" you're right on the money with that :)
Kermode's right, this is a wonderful film, and no matter how bad the supernatural creatures are, the humans, especially the Fascist captain, are worse.
I thought he was going to pan "Labyrinth".
I haven't seen Pans Labyrinth for a while but have wanted to hear the good doctor and the other doctors' view on it
I don’t know if it’s just playful banter but Mayo seems like the most argumentative person ever, cheer up lol
My rainy day film
“You can have a beer or you can go see Pan’s Labyrinth”
I saw it with subs of course and the Dr is right. In a unique way it mixes the horrors of war with a scary but magical other world. Loved it.
@trentkill But... Pan's Labyrinth did won multiple Oscars.
Have you reviewed "Intemperie"?
This film is the 2nd best film ever made IMO,it's only the 2nd best because after repeated watching of both films,I would say the devils backbone(also a 'Del Toro film)just tops it.As a coupling they truely are the best of film,I don't know how 'Del Toro is going to top them, although the hellboy films were as good as blockbuster style films get, only he could do the Mike Mignolas hellboy comic books justice!
I never understand what people mean when they refer to 'genre' cinema. Aren't all movies in a genre?
@ellbo2 Having not seen a huge ammount from that year, there's not much else to choose from. You're right to mention The Departed, but there was also Red Road, Inland Empire, The Host, United 93, This Is England as well as documentaries like Jesus Camp. @R1kuTakao "In fact"? Now that's a dellusion.
It's fine. 3 out of 5.
@pancakeday2006 I forgot about Children of Men, yeah thats a good film. United 93 was quite good as well, This Is England, is ok.
That ending tho. LMAO
watched it when I was 13, the single film that has given me the most heebiejeebies I have ever experienced from a film.
@pancakeday2006 I think it's the best film of the year, which films do you think is better? Looking though the list of films released in 2006, there are some AWFUL films, only The Departed comes close.
Pan's Labyrinth Really good, but you could just have a beer.

Kermodeism´s are funny heh, he does that quite often
Can Mayo not just let Mark have his moment and explain how much he adored this film with belittling him with his unfunny quips?
@pancakeday2006 Yeah I'm with you. The story left me completely cold, the main character was flat, and the whole thing was rather humorless (Yes, I know the setting was bleak, but even so.) Kermode goes as far as to say it's the best film of the decade. Really? Better than There Will Be Blood or City of God?
Terry Gilliam must have been close to giving up when he saw this film.
@Truggsess According to you.
For once I agree kermode.
What's he panning Labyrinth for? I thought Bowie was great in it
"It's a life changing experience"
"In what way has your life changed by seeing the film?"
Umm, it's called 'hyperbole', obviously he didn't mean it literally.
+LoN3wOlF5tudi0s Not necessarily. You're saying movies can't change you?
PauLtus B They can, but I don't think Pan's Labyrinth is one of them. I thought Mark was just exaggerating.
LoN3wOlF5tudi0s I don't think he is. Don't underestimate how much he loves this movie.
+LoN3wOlF5tudi0s Understand their chemistry
It's not often that I disagree with Mark Kermode and generally regard him as THE leading British critic but, on this rare occassion, I don't share his praise of Pan's Labyrinth. A well made fantasy, certainily. But best film of that year? Definitely not.
Yep good movie, but IMO The Devil's Backbone was better.
Martin Hesketh I say both.
battlefield and cod are silly.
LOL you're back! If you're gonna call someone else names, look at yourself PLEASE.
Have to say that 9 out of 10 times, I to largely agree with Mark’s views on movies (except perhaps for The Last Jedi, but that may be because he’s not a Star Wars fan?). lolness
It is a kids film.
It is a masterpiece.... but the Lord of the Rings trilogy is the Citizen Kane of fantasy cinema!
"A History of Violence" is the most overrated film of all time. Until I remember another one.
+aerialkate It is superb
Daniel Elford
I found it utterly forgettable.
+aerialkate Forgettable is not a word I'd expect to hear with that movie.
Great film but Mark Kermode over eggs the cake by descending into unjustified hyperbole, requiring Simon Mayo to "clarify" exactly what he means.
It's not Citizen Kane though.
+CrossingThe Rubicon No it's not. Citizen Kane is bullshit by today's standards while this will remain excellent for ever..
Josh Allen I've watched both of these movies a million times since the 80s. It is my honest opinion that they do not hold up:)
The film's good but it's not THAT good. Kermode's overstatement set me up to be disappointed by it when I saw it. What about some of the poorly defined characters-- the terminator-like evil stepfather; the airy-headed mother who marries him and seems not to notice his sadism or the fact that he's a fascist; the over-rought violence and gore; the limited dunn colour palette? what happened Guillermo ? you went from Pan's Labyrinth to Crimson's peak?
crimson peak is a great movie
its also a lot better than some of del toro's past films
He went from a great movie to a pretty good one. Happens to every director.
I think I hate the movie now because he likes it. He defends it the same way he pans the other movies he hates. No objective views.
Which is shit.
Wow. For some reason i like Kermode's reviews, but i rarely agree with him. This movie was a HUGE disappointment.
I'm glad I had not heard this review before I saw the movie because I would have had my expectations absolutely crushed. I think it is a very mediocre movie.
