    the story about the fan that won some sort of contest and got to go to the world premiere, was so excited to be there and then was as he said "completely heartbroken" is honestly one of the saddest things i've heard in a while.

  • @mortalhellion

    Part of the charm of the original trilogy is how much of the back story is kept to the viewer's imagination. The best Star Wars film is Empire Strikes Back which has the least involvement from Lucas.
    I didn't understand the inclusion of Jar Jar Binks when you already have comedy relief from R2D2 and C-3PO.

    Never quite got the whole "don't get scared, sad or angry or you'll turn evil" philosophy. Surely someone would've realised that every jedi repressing their emotions is the perfect way to make people rebel and go bad.

    At 2:51 I honestly thought it was a Mark Kermode impression because the background music abruptly cut out yet the dialogue still remained. It sounded a lot clearer as if recorded in a studio. Did they really bother to cut out the background music just so they could play the clip for a bit longer?

    The main selling point of the Phantom Menace is that it looks fantastic, and if the 3D is as bad as he says then it's a wasted exercise. Although nowhere near as bad as Attack of the Clones.

    Best review of star wars 3D I've heard so far. Mark has proven to me it ain't worth coughing out the cash to see this shit all over again. And I heartilly agree with his comment on Titanic. Its a far better movie than The Phantom Menace, and will more than likely look fantastic in 3D.

  • @KSRugby

    haha yeah, ive never heard him review attack of the clones, only heard him say he thought it was rubbish, but yeah would be good to release 3D attack of the clones just to here Mark rant in depth about how bad it is

  • @blokey8
    @blokey8 12 лет назад +1

    Another problem about Lucas' decision to release them chronologically- not only does cramming old characters into the prequels create all manner of plot holes, but kids seeing them for the first time will also be confused about why the ships and lightsabers get more and more OTT only to suddenly end up in Episode IV with lots of grey square ships and two old guys just swinging boring single-blade swords and no backflips. The ADD generation will just find the original trilogy boring.

    People wanting to see the Originals in 3D might think again if the 3D was so bad for TPM, a film made much later after them.
    I have no desire to see the film in 3D or again in 2D. 3D won't make up for the lack of an interesting story and interesting characters.

    • @peterd788
      @peterd788 5 лет назад +1

      The Phantom Menace was shot on 35mm like the original trilogy but the other prequels were shot in low resolution video on mostly virtual sets (Revenge of the Sith returned to the UK for lengthy reshoots and had a few real sets but still poor video resolution). Episode 2 used an HD image sent to tape which could only record at a resolution of 1440x1080. Episode 3 used a more advanced system to record at 1920x1080. The original trilogy can be digitally transferred at much higher resolutions than the sub mobile phone footage of episodes 2 & 3. The TPM 3d conversion failed because it was a crap movie and very little care went into the conversion. Even with the higher quality originating format of TPM the effects and editing were performed digitally using rudimentary transfers. That's why the prequels have that soft look. The remastered Star Trek: The Next Generation look so good because the TV show was shot on 35mm but edited on video with effects edited at that stage but the remastered stuff rescanned the 35mm original and re-did the effects and editing at modern resolution. That option is not available for episodes 2 & 3 because they were originated at a lower resolution than medium budget TV shows.

    Phantom Menace tried to take something familiar and quite American and say "actually, it's this foreign thing, with weirder people and creatures than you remember, and you don't actually know Star Wars at all. And to achieve that feeling we're going to make it slightly impenetrable to throw you off and disorient you to begin with before things start to get more familiar later on."

    To Lucas's credit, he did say that he thinks black-and-white films are good too (4:32), and that colour films LOOK better than black-and-white, not ARE better in general. Even though that itself is debatable, and I do agree Lucas has definitely sold out, I think Kermode misinterpreted the quote.

    The film’s stylish, action packed, well scored & has some good acting, however some of the acting is dull & excessive, the film’ script is poor as the film becomes unfocused & long. (56%) (3/5 stars) (mixed)

  • @Gryffster
    @Gryffster 8 лет назад +5

    Let's be honest. They aren't very good films. Not one of them. Empire Strikes Back - possibly has some merit...that sense of menace, the plot twist (spoiled by a friend in the queue who had already seen it, and couldn't resist telling us)
    And Return Of the Jedi? All about merchandising. They turned a swashbuckling buccaneer into a lovesick, clumsy puppy. If someone handed me a Scroll Of Genocide, those fucking Ewoks would be dead within seconds.
    But the dialogue is embarrassing. The plots are wafer-thin. The acting is wooden. Even when I was 15 I was disappointed.
    I've still seen them all.

    • @Solarstar10
      @Solarstar10 8 лет назад +4

      Couldn't disagree more. The acting in the original trilogy isn't Oscar worthy, but it's by no means awful or wooden. The dialogue is the same. The plots may not be complex deep or thought provoking but wafer thin? Not even close. The stories are fun, highly engaging and immensely entertaining. Not being the most complex doesn't mean they're bad. You also have fantastic characters, wonderful world building, great effects that still look good today blending stunning computer generated imagery with great practical effects. The films also feature some wonderful cinematography, lavish production design so on a visual level they're outstanding. I can understand why you'd think they aren't the best films ever, but they are certainly good films, he'll I'd even say great, despite their flaws. But to each their own.
